3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Homeschoolers
I bought this book for my homeschooled 8-year-old, and was disappointed to discover that almost the entire book talked about how to handle school.GT classes, working with teachers to negotiate more suitable learning opportunities, how to survive on the playground and in regular classrooms -- all these topics were addressed, but none were relevant to my homeschooled son, who still has questions about how and why he thinks and perceives the world differently than other children.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for twice-exceptional kids
This book was fun, quick read as an adult, since I could see myself in it. However, it is oriented to gifted kids without learning disabilities. I won't even bother to show this book to my twice-exceptional son. I think he would be alienated by the (sometimes smug) tone in a text that doesn't admit that learning disabilities exist. [perhaps this has been corrected in a later edition]

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for gifted adults, too.
***This review is of the 1984 edition. ISBN 0-915793-00-8. Apparently, the book has been updated and republished many times.***

5-0 out of 5 stars A Teen's Best Resource
Reviewed by Cathy Yanda for Reader Views (07/06)
4-0 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup For the Teenage Soul: The Real Deal School
After reading this book, I found all of the stories included in this compilation very touching. I liked how each short story aimed to teach a little life lesson. The inspiration that these stories carried along with them made me realize how much this book was worth reading. I also enjoyed reading the quizzes and tidbits of information on various topics. The only complaint I would have against this book would be the authors' anecdotes from their own lives. They attempted to relate to teens, but fell short when it came to accuracy. It has been a while since they have been teenagers, and many things have changed in high school. Not only that, but their stories proved to be a bit dull. Other than that, I really did enjoy reading this book, and I look forward to reading other books in this series.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
Just received this book and am returning it pronto. It starts out picturing a kid in a classroom feeling he has nothing to write about because he's not rich like the other kids. It actually suggests giving kids ideas for writing through such life experiences as their parents fighting and them having holes in their socks, to such imaginary experiences as a tree falling on their house and killing their mother in her sleep!! Give me a break! There are MUCH better books out there -- I plan to keep the other 6 writing books for kids that I ordered from Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for classrooms
I used this book in a 3rd grade classroom where I am student teaching. The students hate to write, but they loved this book. They realized that they really do have a lot to write about. We brainstormed a list of possible writing ideas for the days when they are stuck. They love to get out their list and pick something to write about. This book is a must have for any classroom!!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Definitive Book on Educational Theory of the 20th Century
Every American educator and most Americans in general need to read this book.It is the most ground breaking text to be written in the United States in the last 100 years. If all schoolboards and educators used this as a guide, we wouldn't have a problem with public education in this country. Unfortunately, the people who need to read it most, will be the ones who won't understand its message. Such is the paradox in American education today.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected but OK
First off I think some reviewers are giving people the wrong idea of what this book has to offer.I think they meant to review the Dictionary of Cultural Literacy and not this book. After reading some of their reviews I purchased this book and it is not exactly what they led me to believe it was.
3-0 out of 5 stars Perpetuate the canon
I found 'Cultural Literacy' to be a solid, informative reference. I originally hoped to sit down and read it straight through, but soon found it best to tackle the content piecemeal. My only real complaint is that I wish the entries were more in-depth. If you wanted to look up Goethe, for example, you would find only a few sentences on that extraordinary life. On the other hand, I think this book is ideal as a birthday or Christmas present for middle- and high-school students. It would help them understand the genealogy of ideas a little more, and provide them with an insight of why their everyday lives are the way they are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Language for 5th to 8th grades
Even though this is suppose to be for younger kids (4th grade), I bought it for my 8th grade son and it is just right for him. The lessons include writing and speach. There is not an answer key because you don't need one you will be able to do language lessons with just this book. I would plan to take more than one year to finish it though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Teaching Grammar/Language
I am using this for homeschooling my seven year old.She is a bit advanced with English, this is maybe at a 3rd/4th grade level book.It helps the children deduce for themselves the grammar rules using logic/reasoning based on several different sentences or passages. They read bits of literature and use these to write their own stories from different points of view.Example:Lesson 2, the story of the Stone in the Road. The children retell the story from the point of view of the stone, the king, the people, the bag of gold, etc. There is copywork, picture description (both oral and written), memorization, narration both written and oral, tenses, composition, paragraphs, later it gets into debate, discussing proverbs, and things like that.It is very thorough with the exception of homonyms and homophones.Suggest The Reading Teachers Book of Lists as a supplement.Back to basics, classical education.Wonderful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars When love was an ember about to billow
When I was younger I used to love going to antique stores to buy old photographs.Usually these stores would have huge bins of old shots of families, individuals, and places.Finding the ones I thought were the most original, I bought them and gave each one its own name and history, entirely of my own making.I could pore over a single photograph for hours, enlivening it with a background that I myself would never be able to prove or disprove. But each photo was a staged affair. Its participants knew that they were being photographed. How different it would be to do the same thing, only with photos that highlighted a particular historical moment in our nation's history. In "Remember: The Journey To School Integration", authorial god Toni Morrison does just that. She takes photos that highlight the struggles and heroism of the civil rights activists (and their children) during the early years of southern integration and gives many of them their own little comment or story.Taken individually the photos are eye-opening affairs, even for adults that lived through those turbulent years.Taken as a whole they tell a tale that we should never forget.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fitting tribute to a volatile period in history
On May 17, 1954 the US Supreme Court declared segregated schools unconstitutional, sending the nation on a path of integration whose ramifications are being felt today. In Remember: The Journey To School Integration, author Toni Morrison presents archival photos depicting the events surrounding school integration processes, accompanying photos with a fictional text recounting the dialogue and emotions of students of the times. A fitting tribute to a volatile period in history which should never be forgotten.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Morrison Masterpiece
Morrison has captured an era in her skillful hands and held it out for all to see, a remembrance and a memorial as well. She presents reality, but has smoothed the harsh edges, so that the truth stands out plainly and clearly. Her gaze is focused upon progress toward equality, respect, dignity and non-violence.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring message, terrible book
i thought that the overall message of the book was fantastic, however the writing and story left a lot to be desired, there were even several gramatical errors, and spelling mistakes. When asked about this book i simply respond "a very inspiring message, but i wouldn't reccomend it as a book."

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was awesome!!!
This book is by far one of my favorites. A very encouraging book looking at your positive traits. A great way to improve your self-esteem and help others. This book is jam-packed with great things that are good for the soul. I highly recommend this book to everyone; even grown-ups. It is also a great book because it also tells you websites or books you can check into to gain more knowlege about a certain topic. I totally enjoyed this book, and it has helped me a lot!

5-0 out of 5 stars What every kid (adult) should read
What a well organized, motivational book on defining a person's character.Feeling like courage, friendship, integrity, empathy, caring, etc...For each term the author gives an story-like example and defines the meaning of the feeling, then gives examples and role playing questions of how to respond to ethical questions.A GREAT tool for parents and children.Plus websites and additional resources to understand terms.A wonderful book for parents to make sure their children have the character and responsivness to handle the world's problems. :>)GREAT BOOK!KUDDOS to the Author!I also recommend the American Girl Books as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fun way to introduce science to little kids!
It's absolutely perfect for our 3- and 5-year olds! It's a great way to introduce science concepts to them. The experiments are simple to prepare, very interesting and lots of fun. Also, most of the materials are common items used at home.We have done a number of the experiments without spending much money at all.It comes very handy, too, during rainy or snowy days. The activities help keep the kids from getting bored inside the house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource
My kids loved these fun learning activities. Enough to keep them busy through early childhood. Nothing canned here. . . all creative and discovery-focused. Makes biology and even physics accessable to very young children. You can't go wrong with this outstanding guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars This series is GREAT
This is really handy for the budding scientist in your preschooler. Experiements are written so that the early reader can understand and do the experiments on their own (it lets the reader know when a parent needs to help or supervise, such as when scissors are involved) and has question that the parent can use to further expand on projects. Also check this whole series, such as math play, arts and crafts from around the world, rainy day play, weather, shapes, etc. My son loves these activies. Plus for the price, you can't beat it.(...) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Important information for all kids
I agree with Dr. Ross's editorial review that "everything about this book is perfect for children." Speak Up and Get Along is a great resource to help kids survive and succeed especially in their social worlds at school. It is clear and easy for them to read. The best thing about it is that there are a lot examples of how to actually deal with bullying and teasing, arguments, peer pressure and making and keeping friends. Each chapter has easy tools for kids to use and the illustrations help. The chapter on talking back to negative thoughts was really helpful. It gives very specific ways that kids can do this. I really recommend this as a gift for the children in your life. ... Read more

Editorial Review

When the Brain Quest series moves from preschool age to thefirst-grade set, it transforms from a playful question game into a sort of elementary school version of Trivial Pursuit. (In the spirit of this new grown-up air, there is no longer a cheerful animal guide appearing throughout the decks.) Now, each card features one question from each of five category sections: Reading, Math, Vocabulary, Social Studies & Science, and Grab Bag.The rules are gentle: Playing in teams, with partners, or solo, you can stick to your favorite subject category or play the whole card. Keeping score (they offer three different versions) is optional. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Room 10 loves it!
My first grade class loves Brainquest! We play it in a "family fued" type format with table groups competing. They have a blast and the material in the questions is very compatible with our curriculum and state standards. It makes a great game for rewarding them when we've finished everything, a good 10 minute filler, and a good activity to suggest to a substitute. They always get excited when we are going to play, and are requesting it often.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite as kid-friendly
The questions are age-appropriate, but the presentation is somewhat dry, especially if your kids are used to the Brain Quest for preschool and kindergarten. There are very very few pictures in the First grade version, just several questions written on each card. Not as entertaining for kidsas the Brain Quests with pictures. My sugggestion:look at it first at abookstore before you buy it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool
My 3 1/2 year old daughter loves Brainquest! We just wish they made more sets for each level. We usually read books every night at bedtime but now she prefers to do brainquest every night!

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves it!
We bought this for our 3 yo because we loved the 3's pack.I wasn't sure if he would do well with this set but he does a fine job. Some questions and concepts are a bit ahead of him but he gets the majority of it.The questions are really age appropriate and make learning fun.He just loves to go through the questions!I'm all for anything that makes learning fun.He goes around and makes up questions (like, "which one is bigger? This ball or this box?").I would not hesitate to buy these for your preschooler.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected
I purchased this as an "impulse" item to ensure there was something educational under the Christmas tree.It turned out that it has been the most used present. My four year old daughter loves it, and we play it every night. She thought she lost it and began to cry hysterically at the thought that she would not be able to play her Brain Quest. We have also used the approach as a springboard to make up our own critical thinking questions for her when we are out. They are also good for all ranges of verbal skills - as many of the answers you can just point to the right answer, or again, use it as a starting point to tell a longer story based on the question or the picture. The only drawback - there's only 300 questions. We need another pre-school pack. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An old book with a timeless message
Elkind gets criticized a lot for pushing for parents to be "child-centered." I disagree. He's right. If you pursue things for your child taking into account their best interest that is what is called "parenting." The parent centered time is called "before children."
1-0 out of 5 stars Deeply disappointed
I picked up this book looking for thoroughly documented explanations as to why we shouldn't be sending our 2 year old to preschool. I was deeply disappointed to find a book full of sweeping generalizations, offensive assumptions, and poorly researched conclusions. It's obvious that the author feels very strongly about this subject: he comes out swinging, typecasting various sorts of parents and lobbing insults at any even remotely related parenting topic with which he happens to disagree. (For example, did you know that allowing your child to watch the birth of a younger sibling is tantamount to child abuse and will scar him or her for life?) I agreed with his basic premise before I picked it up but couldn't have been more disgusted by the time I put it down. I will have to continue the search for a well-researched book on this subject. Don't waste your money on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy
This is one of the best books I have come across to help children, parents, teachers and friends understand the ADHD girl.I raised a son with ADHD and it was totally different than helping raise a granddaughter with ADHD.I am buying copies for my granddaughter, her mom, her LD teacher at school, and her teacher this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creativity Booster
In April I sent my daughter to a day-long activity at a local college, where Kerry Madden led a writing workshop for girls. I imagine many of the exercises came from WRITING SMARTS. My daughter enjoyed Ms. Madden's class and now can't put her pen or pencil down. She's always writing something for me to read or look at. We now own the book. I think my daughter is on her way to becoming a writer because of Ms. Madden's book and the workshop. This book is a must have if you have a daughter and want to boost her creativity and voice.
