4-0 out of 5 stars good kindergarten book
i got this book for my son starting pre k, but its really geared towards kindergarten. i recommend it fo rthose starting elementary school.

2-0 out of 5 stars Took too long
I ordered this book with several other books from various vendors.I am a teacher and wanted it for the first day of school.I received all of the other books a good week before I received this book and needless to say I didn't receive it by the first day of school.I went out and bought another copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for teachers of the very young!
If you teach early childhood (includes grades pre-k through third) this is a book you will definitely want to add to your collection. From greeting the children each morning to walking them to the bus in the afternoon, thisbook thoughtfully outlines all the reasons a teacher is a child's friend. In addition to viewing the teacher as a friend, this book is great to readat the beginning of the school year because it highlights the funactivities found in most early childhood classrooms (i.e. star of the week, storytime, holiday fun, and more).P.K. Hallinan is a master at being ableto identify with the young child, as well as being a gifted poet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Self-Help Book for Teens with Learning Disabilities
Discusses using your high school and teenage years to become the best possible adult.Includes sections on making and keeping friends, using the IEP process to get a good education, relationships with the opposite sex, and whether or not you should get a part time job.4-0 out of 5 stars It brought relief and a smile to my daughter's face!
After a particularly tough few weeks getting back to school, I bought this book for my 14 Y-O daughter, who has some Learning Differences after surgery, & radiation for removal of a brain tumor. Today, she was bouncing again and all smiles, as she read aloud to me some of the paragraphs from the book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
My daughter loves this workbook.I had purchased some Kumon workbooks for summer enrichment. Both of my daughters, ages 7 and 5, found them to be very boring. This workbook is colorful, interesting, and covers a lot of ground. As my daughter says, "it's so much fun, it's not like doing work!"I will get more books in this series next summer.

3-0 out of 5 stars fun, but frustrating
My son was almost 4 when we got this a couple of months ago, and he really likes it (still does), but it's a bit frustrating in the following way: many of the pictures that it uses for learning letters (e.g. "circle the picture that begins with u") are of vocabulary items that 4 year olds don't necessarily know.E.g. for "u" they had a batter and someone who I guessed was an umpire. But my 4-year-old doesn't know what an umpire is, even though he's cognitively just at the right level for this book in the sense that he finds it fun to do, and when he knows what the pictures are he can pick the right one.Another page had a frilly heart as one of the choices for "v", and you were supposed to know that the heart was a valentine. My kid has a pretty big vocabulary for a 4-year-old, and knows the word valentine, but it just was a little abstract for him.The result is that I have to help him a lot, and I think it'd be more fun for him if he felt he could do it himself. If anyone knows of a similar book with more age-appropriate vocabulary pictures, it'd be great if they could post that in a review, since he does really seem to enjoy the activities in the book, and views getting to do the book as a treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR ANY PRESCHOOLER
I recently purchased the Big Preschool Workbook for my soon to be 4 year old.She went to a preschool for a few months and I can tell you that this is exactly the kind of material they were using in the preschool. The worksheets start out by having the child circle items in a row that match the first item, then circle the item that is different and so on.The first time my daughter and I sit down to work on this she did not stop until she had completed 10 pages and wanted to do more.I think it works really well if you have pretend school.I tell my daughter that it is time for school, explain what she is to do on a page and when she is finished with that page I check it to make sure it is right. This is a GREAT book and I would definatley recommend it for any 3-5 year old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't keep daughter away from it.
My daughter loves this book. We'll tell her to pick a book out and most of the time she picks this one. It's nice and big and has many different puzzles and games that she really enjoys. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great fun!
I absolutely love Brain Quest! My parents bought it for my sister and I when we were kids and we spent hours and hours on end going through them. They are a great way to learn new facts about things you never thought to learn about. I have my Brain Quest to this day and my sister and I, now in our early and mid twenties still pull them out every so often and test our knowledge! I recommend these for kids, teens and even adults! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We love this book!
My daughter, 3, loves this book. I wish there were more books like this. Books about real kids doing normal things that use photographs of kids instead of animal characters. My daughter really relates to the photos and situations in the book. Good for any little girl who is interested in ballet!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 4 year old daughter's favority book!
My daughter is a "girly-girl" who loves ballet! We found this book over the summer. It was great preparing her to start ballet lessons in the fall. The book is about a little girl who loves ballet. It shows her in ballet class, shopping for ballet shoes, reading bedtime fairy tales with her mommy, and then preparing for her recital. The photos are up to date and really make the book. Any little girl would love this story! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Book
Tomas' character is based on Tomas Rivera, a man whose life from migrant worker to university chancellor was helped along by an Iowan librarian he knew as a child. In this heartwarming tale, Tomas is presented as a shy, awkward child who is made to feel welcome in the public library. As Tomas reads stories of dinosaurs, tigers, and the Wild West, he forgets his difficult life. He even teaches the librarian some Spanish words, which he discovers is something he enjoys - enough to make a career in education.
5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful story
What a wonderful book! Public libraries -- and librarians -- portrayed as casually welcoming and friendly. Too often we still see the stereotype of the mean-spirited and repressed librarian! I will confess that I have had the misfortune of knowing a few of those in my career. But the majority of library workers are kind, thoughtful, and outgoing people who are eager to share the gift of literacy with everyone who walks through the door. I will treasure this book all the more because it is a true story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hearwarming, True Story.....
"It was midnight. The light of the full moon followed the tired old car.Tomas was tired too.Hot and tired. He missed his own bed, in his own house in Texas.Tomas was on his way to Iowa again with his family..."Tomas' family were migrant workers. As his parents toiled in the fields during the day picking corn in the hot Iowa sun, Tomas and his brother, Enrique, tried to stay cool under the shade of trees, listening to the old stories told by their grandfather, Papa Grande."Tomas, you know all my stories, " he said."There are many more in the library. You are big enough to go by youself. Then you can teach us new stories."The library was large and cool, and had more books than Tomas had ever imagined. But more importantly, the librarian was very kind and took the young boyunder her wing. And with her help, opens up a whole new world for Tomas; the love of books and learning.....Based on the story of Tomas Rivera, a migrant worker who grew up to become an educator and eventually chancellor of the University of California at Riverside, Tomas And The Library Lady is a heartwarming and inspiring story.Pat Mora's sweet, simple, and quiet text is complemented by Raul Colon's gentle and evocative illustrations and together word and art detail the joys of reading, and the wonderful impact one person can have on a young life.Perfect for children 4-8, Ms Mora includes a short biography of Tomas Rivera at the end to complete the story. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The dim-witted...
This book is for the bright underachiever. The dim-witted or slow of study may not appreciate its irreverence. The creative student, however, will love the everpresent humor and clever strategies. In the Foreword, the late Steve Allen describes the book as a "winning combination of wit and wisdom." I could not have said it better.

1-0 out of 5 stars how does this help?
Absolutley no help for the lazy students, this book is filled with foolish stratigies that only help semi-enthused students make class more enjoyable. The techniques found in the book require at a fair amount of interest in a class. In no way could this book help a student that isnt motivated to work in school. For example, the first section is filled with ways to con a teacher into devoting their time into a mindless/useless class discussion. In what way is this motivating?

5-0 out of 5 stars Double E's: Educational & Entertaining
The book is comprised of tips to do better in school (I love this format/style of writing). Since it is obviously geared toward those who are lazy, it provides essentials, albiet minimal, for success. The point here though is that these essentials create success, improving various aspects of the students academic life.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW, WOW, WOW!!
As an elementary educator and author myself, I can honestly say that I have seen nothing that compares to this book.I believe every parent who has a child in Kindergarten, or about to be in Kindergarten, should own this book. They are functional, brightly designed and draw the parent and child into a fun place to learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative, Ingenious, and Fun for Little Ones
What a pleasure to find a book that is fun for parents as well as the young child they use it with. In addition, this book cuts to the quick by offering only what is necessary for kindergarten readiness, and thereby prevents overworking the child--and the parent wanting to cover all the bases. No more searching around for the right workbooks or information you need to prepare your child--it's all here, in colorful, lively, and re-usable format! Great for homeschoolers as well as any home with children from toddler-age to pre-school--or the slow learner needing a new way to approach basics. My three-year-old and I are having great fun with this. Highly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good learning tool
Imagine having a book that tells parents exactly what their children should know at each grade level. Imagine that children would want to read it, too. That's what you get with Let's Get Ready for Kindergarten!

The book got my attention when the coach said, "You have to keep a C average." And they have to ware a suit and tie on game day. Someone gets shot in the chest three times and dies, but I do not want to give away who dies. They are 17-0 and are going to the championships. This book is good. This is the only book I ever read cover to cover, and I recommend this book for book report last resort.

5-0 out of 5 stars from the bottom to the top.
Coach Carter is about nine basketball players and their coach named Coach Carter. The players don't earn very good grades, so coach Carter locks up the gym for about three games. I didn't mention that the Oilers were 16-0.When the Oilers finally got to play, they played against St. Francis, the hardest team. The Oilers have never been 16-0 since 1973.This was the winning championship. The book has a very good ending.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book was a slam dunk!!!!
Inspired by the life of Coach Ken Carter, the coach with a tough-as-nails approach. Set in the late 1990s and in California, Carter becomes the basketball coach of his former high school, Richmond High, where he excelled on the team when he was. The team he now coaches has had dismal seasons for years and he's here to bring the team and school to new heights. Part of his approach is to get his team to believe in something and that's education and discipline. Some of the kids on the team come from single parent families and the kids and have to hustle and get by on their own for financial support. Ken's son, Damien, has always played basketball under his father's guidance and transfers from a prestigious school to be on Richmond's team. The first day of practice is a day of reckoning for some players who are not used to being coach by a tough person; and Cruz takes his street mentality to challenge Coach Carter, which proves useless. Kenyon is a good kid and really believes that if the team starts winning, he could be looked upon for an academic scholarship for college. This doesn't go well with his girlfriend Kyra, who might be expecting, and put his future in a tailspin. To achieve success is to have goals, and Coach Carter has each player sign a contract stating that they will attain a 2.3 GPA in class in order to play. Everything is going good when the team starts winning and the spirits are high everywhere within the school, until the grade reports come in with unsatisfactorily results. Not only does Coach Carter stops the team from playing, but he has also locked the doors to the gym, forcing the school and the community to challenge him and his authority. ... Read more
