Incorrect/misleading information
The title and associated information for this book titled "Scoring High on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills - Itbs, Book 1" is misleading. I interpreted it as a test preparatory aid for my child that would include practice questions and excersises to help improve test scores. However, it turns out to be just a test booklet that you would get for an actual test sans the test questions! This information should have been clearly associated with the book. And what would have been really helpful is to include information about the questions' booklet so one can actually be able to take the practice tests!

test format learned
To explain the previous comments, this book doesn't have the instructions and question prompts. You have to buy the companion teacher's book to use it. I bought both and figured out how to use them. Although many pages, my child and I finished them in 3 days easily. We did not learn much other than the test format. Improving basic skills requires daily learning in school and study in home. There is a nice Houston community web site http://www.beestar.org we ended up use every week to assess child's skills step by step. With the fundamentals in place, this book can serve as a pre-test warm-up.

Please do not waste your money buying this book
I ordered this book for my son. It arrived damaged. Then I looked at the first few chapters. I could not make anything out of it. No idea on how to use the book, how the question and answer session should proceed. I am trying to return this book. I have an advanced engineering degree. So do not waste your money. ... Read more

A Board Book for Your Little Wolverine
Need to indoctrinate your kid early?This is a great start for the little ones.My son insists on this book in the nightly pre-bed collection.It doesn't hurt that his daddy is in the picture of the Michigan Marching Band (5th trumpet player).This book is further valuable because it has all the lyrics to "The Victors" as well as "The Yellow and Blue".So you can learn them along with your child and never have to mumble through the lyrics of Yellow and Blue, chiming in only on the "Hail" part.You know what I'm talking about.

A must have resource for parents of 1st graders!
If my kids were in First Grade (or kindergarten; see companion book "Let's Get Ready for Kindergarten!"), I would definitely add these books to their collection. I am going to give them to my niece, who is 4 years old and will enter kindergarten next fall.

I wish I bought this book earlier
This one of the best books I've read for kindergarten. It can be used on so many different levels. I have my daughter follow each student in the book (she loves the kid picking his nose too)and we talk about what they are doing and sometimes we play I spy.

This book is horrible!
I have never seen a worse school memories book.Instead of storage pockets for mementos, the book comes with construction paper sheets for making paste-on collages.The binder is a standard 1" version with a clear pocket on the front where the title page is inserted.I expected a professional looking product, but the book looks like someone pulled it together using a poor quality laser printer.The only saving grace is that the 3 ring binder feature allowed me to insert my own storage pockets for mementos, preventing the hassle and expense of having to return the book.

A good portrayal of the man who taught Ganas
I had heard that Stand and Deliver was a good movie and so I borrowed it from my public library. I wanted to know the truth about Jaime Escalante, the truth behind the movie. I happened to see this book one day and just started reading it. It took me less than an hour to read, but the well-written book taught me much about Escalante, the sensational and resourceful teacher. This is not only the Stand and Deliver story-- the story about how he made 18 high school students pass the A.P. Calculus exam, but the things that led to it and the aftermath. This lively and engaging biography makes good use of quotations and information gained through personal interviews with Escalante.Reading this book makes me feel that I have spent time in Escalante's company.I would not want teachers to mimic his style, but I would like them all to share his determination to succeed. ... very good but pick this second
I agree with Anil in that I'm not so crazy about the transliterations. The Usborne "First Thousand Words in Hebrew" also has the transliterations but not the english. There, you are expected to figure out that a 'kolnoa' is a movie theater from the picture which not everyone will get. I guess you could look the translation up in the back but that's too advanced for kids. The Steadman/Cirker version also has no English with the picture and even worse there's no color-a big big minus to me!

A REAL sense of leadership

Realistic Recess!
I shared this book with my grandson's second grade class and left it for the students to read during recreational reading. They all wanted a closer look! The colorful photos and snappy text bring this recess experience to life for kids, parents, and grandparents. As a former teacher, I could relate to all the preparation required for sending children outside on a nippy day. It is obvious this author has authentic background as a teacher in Alaska.

great for memories AND educational too
This was more fun for my daughter than working on worksheets. We practised writing and drawing and I learned alot about what she did at school.
