3-0 out of 5 stars Ahh...okay.
By now, the wonderfully three-dimensional characters such as Dicey and Jeff are beginning to wilt. I recommend this book to fans of Dicey because it is good to find out what happens, but this isn't a book worth reading more than two or three times. (the earlier ones in the series NEVER get old) It's too depressing, and the happy ending doesn't really make up for the depressing parts.5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner
Cynthia Voigt created a bestselling series with the Tillerman family that began with "Homecoming" and ended with this book "Seventeen against The Dealer." Voigt's talented use of action and realistic dialogue to move the story along keeps readers turning the pages and longing for more. I became a Dicey fan early on for her courage and her spunk. Dicey, the whole Tillerman clan make excellent role models for today's young.5-0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected
Seventeen Against the Dealer was much better than I expected.I read this book to do a report on, and it is very easy to understand, very easy reading.I was able to relate to each of the characters, especially Dicey and Maybeth. This book had something for almost everyone.A little suspence, a little adventure, and a little romance. If you are like me, I can picture a grandmother refusing to be taken to a doctor, eventhough she is near death. If you have read any of Voigt's books, read this one.It does get better after the 2nd chapter! ... Once again the Baily School Kids Melody, Eddie, Howie, and Liza have found that they have a pretty wierd adult in Baily City, and it just turns out to be their ecology project coordinator. Mr. Bunyip is definitely strange. He says he comes from Australia and he came to the United States because people were overcrowding his space. Plus he chases wild turkeys!! Melody knows somethings up again so she does some research and comes up with the conclusion that Mr. Bunyip is a swamp monster. Well, once again that Baily School Kids are out to save Baily City and this time in a ecological way too by cleaning Swamp Dread! However will cleaning be the only way to drive out Mr. Bunyip? 1-0 out of 5 stars This audio book is abridged.
Even though the Amazon heading says "unabridged", the cover says this audio tape is an abridgement. So if you want it for students to follow along in their books as it plays, it may not be so convenient.

5-0 out of 5 stars finding her place
Dicey Tillerman, the heroine of Homecoming, is having difficulty settling in at her grandmother's, who has adopted her and her three siblings. She finds it hard to let go of shouldering full responsibility, which she was forced to bear when shepherding her family down to her grandmother's.Despite her chip on her shoulder, she manages to make a few good friends, and after her mother passes away, come to terms with the pain and confusion that she's bottled up inside. Will she take her grandmother's words about "reaching out" to heart?
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't worry if it's not good enough for anyone else to hear. Sing, sing a song.
When the Newbery Award (given each year to a children's book that is deemed the best-written work of the past 365 days) is handed to a sequel, I always get a bit incredulous.Really? This book is great in and of itself without having read its predecessor? In my opinion, sequels should never receive awards. If you thought that they were so great, award the first book/movie/album in the series, cause otherwise the awardee isn't going to make much sense.Harumph! There are exceptions to every rule, though."Dicey's Song" maybe one of the few.Unlike Lloyd Alexander's, "The High King" or "The Grey King" by Susan Cooper (the Newbery has a penchant for "King"ly sequels), Cynthia Voigt's quiet masterpiece does not necessarily require that the reader know the story that preceded it.It wouldn't hurt and it would probably make for a much better read, but not reading "Homecoming" isn't going to lessen your enjoyment of Book Two in the Tillerman family series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good start to the SVH series

5-0 out of 5 stars I was obsessed!
I loved the Sweet Valley High books when I was in junior high!I remember going to the bookstore about once a month and buying the latest book about Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield and their friends' adventures.I would often read each book in one day. These books bring back a lot of fun memories of my early teen years.I still have a large collection of Sweet Valley High books.I don't know if these stories would appeal to young girls of today, but I do know that many other girls loved these books as much as I did in the '90s!

3-0 out of 5 stars Typical good sister-bad sister book
This book was okay. I kind of wanted to stop reading it after a while, but I had to press on because I had to read it for my book report. Basically Liz Wakefield is the good twin that always does what she is told and always tries to help people and Jessica is the wild twin that doesn't stop her wild escapades until she gets what she wants. When she lands a date with Rick Andover, a drop-out, she thinks she's scored. She ends up getting in trouble and when Caroline Pearce, the school gossip, finds out she spreads it around school, only she believed the twin that got in trouble was Liz Wakefield. Liz has to find a way to get herself out of the mess and also becomes attracted to Todd Wilkins in the process. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars an archaeologist's opinion
From an archaeologist's point of view, that the "artifact" used for show and tell is a wood hoop with strings (and would not be preserved in most archaeological contexts) is the minor problem. The major problem is that Great Aunt Jane, the archaeologist, has an "artifact" in her trunk instead of in a curation facility.Ethical archaeologists do not keep the artifacts they find. The book could have Arnold find a replica made of one of Auntie's discoveries. In its favor, the book does emphasize "it's not what you find [i.e. the artifact] but what you find out" that's important.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
I liked reading this book, because it was easy to read and understand. I thought that the book was funny and interesting. The class had show and tell and Arnold brought something in to show that was very interesting. No one knew what it was. They try to find out what it is and where it came from by going on a trip with there teacher. By reading this book, you will find out what exactly happened on their trip and what it is what Arnold brought in for show and tell!Read more

This is a very good book. When you read it, it seems so real!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Declaration of Independence
Abby Hayes, former soccer player wannabe, is now on another mission in which she must prove herself. This time, though, instead of proving that she is worthy of being a part of the Hayes family by becoming a soccer star, she is proving to her parents that she is mature enough to ride bikes to the fall festival at the high school with her friends, and hang out there without her little brother tagging along. But after doing countless chores and trying to act more adult-like (both seeming to be unimpressive to her parents) Abby is wondering if she's EVER going to be considered "mature".Will Abby be able to earn the freedom that she is positive she deserves...or will one mistake ruin everything?

My five year old son and three year old daughter have been enjoying this book for over a year. The older child finds the story exciting and gains satisfaction from better understanding the world around him. The younger child enjoys how the characters she's come to know so well morf into creatures she's familiar with from visits to the aquarium and the fishmonger.

The book, like all the other Magic School Bus books, teaches a lot, and has a moral. In this story the reader can learn a lot about the coral reefs of the sea, and what kind of creatures live there. 4-0 out of 5 stars Another Alice Hit
I've been an Alice fan for more years than I can remember. I had been a little unsure of how I felt about the high school Alice, but "Alice in the Know" reassured me.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the others, but still great!!
As a dedicated reader of the Alice series, I was extremely excited when I saw the newest book on the book store shelf! Of course I bought it.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best in the series
I almost always look on amazon.com for reviews on books before I run out and get them at the bookstore. I was curious to see what THIS Alice book was about, and was really dissapointed when I saw that a lot of people had given it poor reviews. Therefore, I decided not to waste my money and buy it. But since I've read all of the other Alice books, I picked it up off of the shelf once I saw it at the local bookstore just to see what it was about. It looked pretty good, so I got it, despite it's bad reviews.

Just last year, I wrote a letter to Anne Mazer and she told me that she's going to write at least 24 books about Abby Hayes and now I definetly want to read all her books. "That's The Way The Cookie Crumbles," is one of her newest books. Abby bakes cookies for the "The Daisy," which is the report/news group for the Susan B. Anthony school. When everyone tasted her cookies, they loved it and wanted more of her cookies. Then one of the teachers told her there is a Summer Writing Camp, Abby wants to sign up but when she asks her parents they said no because ofwriting camp costs too much money. Abby gets an idea, she decides that she's going to sell her cookies at school and it was a great idea. The cookies were selling like crazy but then Abby found out that selling cookies is not allowed on school property or in the school. This leads to serious trouble because Abby gets caught by the principle, Dr. Trane and has detention.

I love this book. Although I'm upset that Abby Hayes would break school rules on purpose just for money, the rest is very good. If you're an Abby Hayes fan or you just heard about the series, you will love this book. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

This was such a fun book! I bought it for my daughter when she was 9 yr old. It's a very funny book. Bsk Holiday Special has fun activities like word puzzles in the middle. If this the first time or the you have read Bailey School Kids books before you will love Bsk Holiday Special (The Adventures Of The Bailey School Kids)by Debbie Dadey.
