4-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT FOR TELLING AROUND THE CAMPFIRE!
SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK has classic campfire stories, such as ''The Hook'', and ''Me-Tie Daughty Walker'' along with lesser known tales like ''Alligators'' and ''May I Carry Your Basket''? Some stories are funny, such as ''The Viper'' (I've come to vipe your vindows) and ''The Ghost With Bloody Fingers'' (cool it dude, get a band-aid) while others are genuinely spooky, like ''The Guests'' and ''Cold as Clay''. The book was clearly intended for reading out loud, many stories even have tips for the reader, such as when to raise and lower your voice. Stephen Gammell's pictures are mysterious and darkly beautiful. I highly recommend this book for those looking for a spooky read aloud.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty darn creepy
First of all, at 14 years old, I have never been the most courageous of all, especially when it comes to ghost stories and psychological fear, the fear that lurks in your head; I have ALWAYS possessed that peculiar human craving to be scared out of my wits by a good ghost story, but like the human I am, have more often than not chickened out before getting to the "punchline" of the tale.
5-0 out of 5 stars A LOT better than R.C. Welch's "Scary Stories For Stormy Nights"!
A LOT better than R.C. Welch's "Scary Stories For Stormy Nights"! Unlike that book, these stories are original (and not sad).

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Told Stories
I have been a fan of the More Scary Stories books since I was a little kid. Schwartz's stories and Gammell's illustrations were always a treat to look. Sadly I can't read and work at the same time so I decided to buy the audio tapes. They're very good and very creepy. The narrator has a great range of vocals and tells the stories beautifully, even frightening me at times. I was sort of dissapointed to see that a few of my favorite stories from the first volume were missing, such as The Thing and WINDEGO, but overall I'm very pleased with the quality of these CDs. Now I can take these scary stories to whatever dark places I desire.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite scary story collections.
These stories scared me a LOT when I found out about them. Except for the funny ones. My favorites are: THE HOOK, "OH, SUSANNAH!", THE BAD NEWS, THE ATTIC, THE WINDOW, THE BIG TOE, THE WHITE WOLF, THE WOLF GIRL, THE CURSE, THE LITTLE BLACK DOG, AARON KELLY'S BONES, T-H-U-P-P-P-P-P-P-P!, "NO, THANKS", THE GHOST WITH THE BLOODY FINGERS, THE VIPER, HIGH BEAMS, HAROLD, SUCH THINGS HAPPEN, THE DEAD HAND, THE APPOINTMENT, THE WENDIGO, and ROOM FOR ONE MORE. (can't think of other stories).
5-0 out of 5 stars I don't care if you're 50. You will be scared...trust me.
I read these books about 15 years ago and I must say to this day they are still among the scariest I've ever read. In fact I'd almost NOT suggest letting little children read them. The stories are short and truely frightening. The only suggestion that I have is that you do actually read the books. I have yet to hear the audio CD but I intend to get it in the near future just to have on hand. The reason for this is the pictures. The drawings done for these books are utterly horrifying. In 15 years I STILL have trouble looking at some of them. And better yet, they are burned into my memory. If your a parent, I'd suggest flipping through the pages first to see if you're okay with the stories themselves...but the pictures as well (as the pictures can really pack a punch, nightmares all around). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Still sticks with me, even now
I'm nineteen years old, and I still remember the day I found this book in my school library when I was six. I was enamoured, and checked it out numerous times before another student lost it. I was a bookworm as a child, having read hundreds of books in a matter of years, and this book still stands as one of the truly unforgettable books I read in my youth. I believe it is the powerful imagery of the book that has stuck with me all these years, and made it impossible for me to forget.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely! Spooky but in the fun way!
I was read this book as a child in Kindergarten. I simply fell in love with these stories. The one that sticks out most in my mind is "The Green Ribbon".
5-0 out of 5 stars Memorable Book with Audio
My kids and I checked out the audio version many times from the library. I still recall the narrator's warm voice and his pronunciations. It's scary enough to keep your interest and get you thinking, but not horrifying. I love "The Green Ribbon" and how Jenny and Alfred live their whole lives on a few pages, getting older and older. Finally Jenny's head falls off when the ribbon is removed. Told You NOT to, Alfred! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspired me
When I was three or four, my older sister would show me the pictures in this book and being so scared, I would cry. The images are so strong, they really make the book what it is. When I was 8, I sat there for hours.. staring at the images, afraid that just maybe they were staring back at me too. They hold so much life and creativity, they inspired me. I'm a photographer, and looking at my gallery, I can see where each picture was inspired by this book somehow (my drawings, too).
5-0 out of 5 stars Great stories!
I have always been fascinated with all of Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories collection, ever since I was a child. Stephen Gammell's drawings are really creepy and amazing. I purchased these books to hopefully share with my students. BEWARE though, some young children become frightened with some of the drawings! For ages 9 and up!

4-0 out of 5 stars These stories are TERRIFYING!
When I first first bought this audiobook, I thought that these stories wouldn't really be that great and certainly not that scary. But I was wrong. These strories are TERRIFYING! What actually makes them terrifying in the audiobook version is the narrator. He has such a dark and creepy voice while reading these stories. I am now 17 and I still can't listen to these stories alone at night. If you want to be scared out of your wits, read or listen to these stories. Listen to them in the dark by yourself. I DARE YOU! You won't last 5 minutes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another excellent story in this series!
This is a reallllllllllllllly good book. Especially when Addie Fitch gets voodooed (ha, ha!). Well, but is the story "The Wolf Girl" true or not? It's hard to find out, but this is a really good ending of this series (well, except the only lunatic story is "No, Thanks").
4-0 out of 5 stars "Harold"
While it hardly needs to be said that Stephen Gammell's oft-lauded illustrations are absolutely, fantastically, wonderfully frightening, the actual *stories* in this series have never struck me as particularly scary. That said, however, the story "Harold" which appears in this volume is by far the scariest in the series and is, indeed, one of the creepiest tales I've ever read (and I can be quite difficult to scare!).

Parents andteachers will enjoy reading this to their children as it will amuseand get children interested in reading.Children will want it read to them over and over again, until of course they gather interest in reading and read it themselves. My little brother didn't want to or wasn't interested in reading, until he picked up a copy of THERES A CARROT IN MY EAR!

4-0 out of 5 stars A real funny
My daughter brought this book home from the library and has been reading it to her little sister who responds with uproarious laughter (they are 6 and 3).The forward at the beginning of the book says that the authorsof some of the poems were children. What better encouragement could ayoung writer have? Some of these poems I remember from my childhood asjumprope rhymes. Altogether an enjoyable first reader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun read aloud book
I enjoy reading this book to my 15 month old daughter at bedtime. She enjoys the poems and verses as well as the illustrations. I have heard many parts of this book in my childhood, and this brings back great memories. Iwould recommend this book to any parent whose child likes to be read to andto any parent who enjoys folk poetry and verses. I find as a parent, thisbook is easy to read to a child and both members benefit from it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Have fun by talking
Tongue twisters are a form of play that is like no other. By putting together a series of phrases that require some lag time between them so that the speech mechanisms can recover, we can put ourselves in a situation where our mouths are incapable of making the appropriate sounds. This book is a collection of such phrases, and they are simply fun to (try to) say. Children also enjoy reading and trying to say the phrases. In that respect it also has some educational and developmental value.Difficult phrases are excellent practice for speech development as well as for speaking in acting roles and public forums.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and not too scary
I have read this book to my kindergarten class and it brought much delight to my little listeners. The story of the green ribbon around Jenny's neck is always a favorite and I've had to order a new copy of the book because my original is so tattered.
4-0 out of 5 stars Scary
This book is a collection of short scary stories for children, perfect for Halloween season.I remember reading these stories when I was younger and think that they where they scariest things. If you read the stories to the children, you could then have them come up with their own scary stories.Plus it is a great way to introduce the genre of mystery and suspense and teach the children what qualities a book must have to actually be a mystery. Most of all these short stories are fun to read and they are not so scary that a child would be left with nightmares, and they are short enough that they keep the child's attention long enough

5-0 out of 5 stars great scary stories
These stories may not be frightening to the average reader, but they are enjoyable to younger readers who want to know what a scary story is all about. Five stars all the way. ... Read more
