5-0 out of 5 stars Midnight by "Lightstorm"/ "Lightstar"
At last Tigerstar and BloodClan are gone. The forest Clans are currently living in peace, but then Brambleclaw gets a mysterious dream from Bluestar telling of a prophecy and how he must meet with four other cats and listen to midnight. Brambleclaw struggles to make heads or tails of this dream. Meanwhile, Firestar's daughter Squirrelpaw continues to get on Brambleclaw's nerves. Although later on the cats get along better after Brambleclaw meets Feathertail, Tawnypelt (his sister), and Crowpaw, who is a rather irritating apprentice. Feathertail is joined by Stormfur, her brother who wants to protect her (both of the warriors are Graystripe's kits), and Squirrelpaw tags along as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really Good Book
This is a Really good book.I am glad that they switched the main character because Firestar is a leader so he can not move up the ranks in Thunder Clan. I kinda wish she did not Brambleclaw bet he is cool. This series is as good as the other series.Sqirrelpaw is pretty cool so are the other "chosen" cats. It has love, action, mythology, and mystery twisted into one. I advise everyone to read this book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

It's 1906 and 16-year-old Mattie Gokey is at a crossroads in her life. She's escaped the overwhelming responsibilities of helping to run her father's brokedown farm in exchange for a paid summer job as a serving girl at a fancy hotel in the Adirondacks. She's saving as much of her salary as she can, but she's having trouble deciding how she's going to use the money at the end of the summer. Mattie's gift is for writing and she's been accepted to Barnard College in New York City, but she's held back by her sense of responsibility to her family--and by her budding romance with handsome-but-dull Royal Loomis. Royal awakens feelings in Mattie that she doesn't want to ignore, but she can't deny her passion for words and her desire to write. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my top 10!
Okay, when I first checked this book out of the library, one of my teachers scoffed at me. Apparently he had scanned a page and had seen cuss words. But when I began reading it, I fell it love with it, and finished it within the afternoon. Mattie, the main character is growing up in such a hard situation, in a time when women still had little rights. Mattie battles between settling down and going to college. I'll leave the ending a surprise, but it made me cry, the reason being because it ended just as much as the actual ending. It's centered around the death of Grace Brown, who had given Mattie a pack of letters to burn. Mattie reads though, and solves a murder. Mattie is such a real person, and Donnelly's words are so poetic. It created a whole new world for me, and I'll never forget this book. Although I would not suggest this book for those under 13 because of language and adult sequences, but everyone else deserves to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars IT TAKES A VILLAGE....
Matty Gokey is the sixteen year old narrator of this novel. With the 1906 murder of Grace Brown (also covered in Dreiser's "An American Tragedy) setting the stage for this tale that ultimately explores not only Graces murder, but the issues of poverty, racism, pregnancy, the perceived station of women in society, and the effects of death/loss on the human spirit.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This Gem Because of the YA Designation
I am not sure why this work is considered a young adult novel, because at the ripe old age of 55, I was intrigued by Donnelly'sauthentic, right-on-the-money, bulls-eye prose. The narrative chronicles the coming-of-age of young Mattie Gokey, who lives a hardscrabble rural life in the North Woods of the Adirondacks in the early 1900's. The novel functions as historical fiction, and it accurately pinpoints the poverty, racism, mores and gender issues of this era in this particular location.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rich part of this bilingual Canadian's heritage
Volume 7: The Castafiore Emerald (1963), Flight 714 for Sydney (1968), Tintin and the Picaros (1976). This is the last instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.
5-0 out of 5 stars How can you go wrong w/ Tintin? Love it!
Tintin is cool. The classic stories are a joy to read & Captain Haddock is always a riot! Funny, suspensful stories! Well worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin is sooo wonderful
I love Tintin, and I would reccomend that you buy this book. It is the last three books in the Tintin seiries. If you are a Tintin maniac like me, then you would definately buy this. Even if you aren't a maniac, I would still reccomend it. Tintin in the Picaros is very good, and Flight 714 is verry funny. Even though they say Tintinis a reporter-slueth, I think he is more like a detective because he always has a gun. This book is soooo good. It won't take that long to read all three adventures, but you can always read them again. GO TINTIN! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Jumanji Children's book
This book was in perfect condition when it arrived in New Zealand. I was particularly impressed with the service I received from Amazon and the quickness of my delivery. Thumbs Up!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thrilling Childhood Memory
Jumanji is a great book! I am 23 years old now and I still remember the day my 2nd grade teacher read Jumanji to my class. I was hanging on her every word and the illustrations were absolutley amazing. This was in the year 1987 and up to that point I had never seen pictures so vividly and immaculately rendered. Jumanji was unlike any other book that I had read because it was fun, exciting, adventurous, and also eerie which added to the intrigue. I was very disappointed by the movie interpretation of it, because it's nothing like the real thing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jumanji
Jumanji is an exhilarating book.Itis a fiction book and fiction books are better than nonficiton because when somebody tells you the truth it`s not fun. Another reason I liked Jumanji is because Chris Van Allsburg writes pretty good books and his pictures are breathtaking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Loved It
I loved this book. It was a great read. Tiria finds the two injured birds, Brantalis and Pandion. She also has a few visions of Martin, who tells her to sail for Green Isle. This lets Tiria go on her adventures while the Abbeybeasts unpuzzle the riddles. It also speeds the plot up a lot. Tiria finds Cuthbert, and sails to Salamandastron. There she picks up 30 more hares, her regalia, and sails to Green Isle. There the book comes to an excellent conclusion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for fantasy readers in middle school, high school and beyond
Young Tiria Wildlough is an ottermaid touched with destiny: she journeys from Redwall Abbey to an isle where she must fulfill an ancient prophecy to gain her inheritance, and face a wildcat chieftain and his catguard slave masters. Her involvement in an otterclan battle will change her world in this latest Redwall saga for fantasy readers in middle school, high school and beyond.
5-0 out of 5 stars An aquired taste
With Redwall, my experience is that you get into it early, or not at all. I first was introduced to the world of Mossflower when I was eight, and I have never left it. Now I am a teenager, and when I try to get my friends to read it, they call it childish and trite. I realize that the plots do aquire a certain sameness over the course of the series, but I find that incredibly comforting. I know that one or two good beasts will die, but the good guys will win, and the bad guys will get their tails kicked in an extremely satisfying manner. ... Read more

Volume 2: The Broken Ear (1937), The Black Island (1938), King Ottokar's Sceptre (1942). This is the second instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.
5-0 out of 5 stars A trio of solid Tintin adventures from the late 1930s
Volume 2 of "The Adventures of Tintin" brings together a trio of stories by Herg from the late 1930s, right before World War II.This is noteworthy because at this point Herg is refining his attention to cultural detail in these stories, but also starting to get more fanciful and away from what is happening in the real world. You will still find allegorical elements in these stories, but none of the events ripped from the headlines that you saw in previous tales such as "The Blue Lotus."
4-0 out of 5 stars Tin Tin, a literary comic.
I've read a little of the Tin Tin series, enough to make sure they are appropriate for young eyes, but my son loves reading them. They are colorfully illustrated and have lively stories and humor. My son is 11 and still likes to see pictures in his books. As far as that goes, I do too! This is a very fun series and I recommend it especially for kids who complain about reading in general. The Tin Tin series is engaging and fun. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Our son has never been so enthralled over a book
We bought this book for our 8 yr. old son and it's the first book that we couldn't pry from his hands.I never thought I'd hear myself say, "Son, would you please stop reading.".The illustration in the book as well as all the elements are beautiful and it's just so full of interesting "things" including a bunch of stickers. The stickers are so beautiful that my son didn't want to use them so they wouldn't get messed up. He wanted to keep them perfectly preserved.Every page is a suprise. He loved this book so much that he begged us to buy Pirateology and we didn't hesitate.

4-0 out of 5 stars the 4 star review
The model dragon was cool and you can even hang it from the ceiling
3-0 out of 5 stars Purchase for the Dragon model
I originally bought this for my nephews, who have a fascination with dragons and such at the moment. It's definitely a result of the Harry Potter phenomenon, but the similarity ends at its "magical" quality. Its intent is the opening of minds to the hidden worlds of the imagination, and a rekindling of young peoples' interests in areas of mythology and classic literature. Supposedly the work of the last dragonmaster, the book aims to dispel the myths on dragons, recalling Hagrid's comments that they are "very misunderstood creatures". While Dragonology has lots of bells and whistles and moving parts, this is a simple guide to tracking and identifying dragons of various types, and the information within can also be found in either the first Dragonology text, or the Handbook. The Dragon model, used for identifying dragons in the wild, is quite a treat, however, and easily assembled, though I would expect it to be easier for 10+ year olds. The model itself is made from very thick, durable cardboard (almost like wood), and, for the price of less than $10, it's a decent value. While the tracking guide is great for stimulating the imagination of children (of all ages, apparently), it's a slightly more involved text than Dragonology (and on par with the Handbook, from which it was derived), and therefore also likely to appeal to children 10+. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful novel of a wonderful series
I read the Earthsea Trilogy as an adolescent. I remember loving it, although the experience was, even then, very different for me. I was a fan of C.S. Lewis, Tolkein, Lloyd Alexander. But Leguin felt really differrent. Part of this was that the novel was more intellectual in focus, more about what lies at the heart of her characters and less about overt action, heroics. I remembering being surprised that the plot moved so quickly away from the obvious. In this novel the hero, Ged, very early on makes terrible mistakes. Instead of being brave and untarnished, he's afraid and for some time runs away from the evil he's unleashed. This is not obvious fantasy fare. It doesn't fit the formula, and for that I loved it. Adolescence was, for me, a time of much uncertainty and doubt and sometimes outright fear. I really connected with Ged and appreciated being able to read about a troubled, damaged hero who wasn't always perfect. Also, I did note that LeGuin is careful to describe her character's racial diversity. This is a world of brown and black people, with a few paler ones living at the margins of society. I think people often miss this, but I didn't then.
2-0 out of 5 stars Overrated
So often it seems like an adequate book is well loved just because it appears in an "unusual" genre. If this book was about anything but wizards, it would be considered mildly entertaining, but not much else. I found it neither very intellectually stimulating, nor focused around an incredible plot. Of course, people can like what they like, but I feel like this book was a real let down.

3-0 out of 5 stars "There was not much work to be got out of Duny."
While not as detailed or as ornate as THE LORD OF THE RINGS, LeGuin's Earthsea Cycle is considered among the finest of the Sword and Sorcery classics. A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA is the first book in the Cycle.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent read, not great
I want to love Artemis Fowl, and it's original enough, but it's just not terribly clever. There are some silly jokes and word plays (L.E.P. is where "leprechaun" came from), but not great.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mastermind Criminal vs. Magic
This book is awesome. It's about a young criminal (rich) mastermind who's hoping too become much richer. He kidnaps a farie, after reading of their gold, and holds her for ransom. I liked this book because the character faces difficult puzzles, but always manages to find an answer, however crude. This hilarious book is a mystery, a comedy, and a fantasy all rolled into one convenient paperback.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Secrets of the Forest
In the third Warriors book, Fireheart must find the answers to many secrets, though some of them are probably better left undiscovered. At the start of the book, Fireheart sneaks away to visit Ravenpaw, who is still at Barley's farm. Ravenpaw reveals that Oakheart had never been murdered at all, but simply crushed in a rockfall, and then Redtail was murdered by Tigerclaw.
5-0 out of 5 stars Forest of Secrets by "Lightstar"
They're all sooo good! Fireheart is still struggling over Tigerclaw's treachery, Graystripe's passionate affair with Silverstream, and Cinderpaw's lost future because of her injury. Oh, and the mischievous Cloudkit/Cloudpaw. Still, the ending's sooo good. Even though poor Silverstream who just HAD to die! At least her kits (later on Feathertail and Stormfur) survive. Anyway read this one. It's soo suspenseful! And it's soo cool that Fireheart became the Clan deputy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Mysterious Book in the Series
This story is about Fireheart on a quest appointed by himself to find out the truth behind a power-thirsty murder and also to uncover proof and details to back up his story that Tigerclaw is behind the whole treachery. On the way to find the truth he discovers secrets unknown to the rest of the clans (except those who witnessed them) and meets other obstacles on the way. This story is the most suspenseful one in the series along with the perplexing prophesies and the weep-out-loud deaths and partings. There is also a shocking ending which I assure you will enjoy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You'll Never Regret this one!
This 19 CD set is so good that I am surprised it is even available. If you are a Lewis fan, this radio theatre production is going to be a great addition to your library. Each one is nearly word-for-word to the books themselves.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you want just one X-Men comic
I'm old enough to remember when there was just one X-Men comic, which made following that universe fairly simple. Today, I don't have the patience (or the funds) to follow all of the various titles, but I can enjoy one series without all of the others, and this is it. I also have no interest in heading to the comic book store once a week, so this collection makes things easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to the past
I am an old collector of the X-men since the days of Claremont and Cockrum. I actually pulled from the old spinner racks all the issues of Claremont/Byrne and I actually read X-Men 135 during my social studies class in high school. Why do I mention any of this? It's because the Astonishing X-Men made me feel like I did when I read those books before. These are excellent books and definitely worth the investment and time.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
All I can say is that this is one amazing series!I did not read these issues in Trade Paper Back format, but I did read the individual issues and I just had to recommend them. This is one of the best comic books you are ever going to read. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pictures Are Worth A 1000 Words

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Beginning to Series
Ten year old Charlie Bone discovers he has a unique talent - he can hear the thoughts of people in photographs. Charlie's Grandmother Bone and her sisters are delighted that Charlie has inherited powers, the gift runs in the family and his late father also was one of the "endowed". They insist that Charlie attend Bloor's Academy where he can further develop his powers. Charlie reluctantly goes and soon realizes there are odd things going on at Bloor's. Before he quite knows exactly what is going on, Charlie is deep in a mystery involving a case with something mysterious inside it and a missing child and also discovers his father may not be dead after all.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wickedly Funny
Charlie Bone likes soccer and TV, but not much else. He likes to hang out with his next-door neighbor and best friend, Benjamin Brown, and Benjamin's dog, Runner Bean. For Charlie, life is pretty good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magic Tree House CD Collection Books 9-16
Great collection of stories by Mary Pope Osborne. Perfect for a long road trip with the kids or for use in my 2nd grade class.

5-0 out of 5 stars MAGIC TREE HOUSE CD COLLECTION BOOKS 9-16 by Mary Pope Osborne
My daughter has struggled with reading since the first grade. She will begin the third grade in a week.We discovered the Magic Tree House Collection while participating in our local library's summer reading program. She fell in love with the characters Jack and Annie and their adventures. She has a desire to read now that she did not have before-which makes things much better for the both of us.The CDs reinforce what she reads and this has helped her tremendously.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Better Than a DVD, Dad"
The stories are addictive and the narration is terrific. My 4 kids, ranging in age from 4 to 8 all love the books and opt to listen to the CDs instead of using the car's DVD player. They are better saved for longer trips, but each book has about 10 chapters, so there are natural breaks in the story. It will keep everyone's interest for at least an hour or two before you'll want to swap-out Jack and Annie for some Springsteen or Sinatra. The stories are exciting but not scary, and there is an educational element to them as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Paul Dini and Alex Ross combined: The Audience is sure to win.
Actually, this edition is more a 7 and a half stars worth of material. The writing, which is both accesible to children as to adults, tells the very human stories of legendary DC Universe heroes like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman among others trying to make the world a better place in their own respective ways.
5-0 out of 5 stars infallible
based on the strength of the Kingdom Come graphic novel illustrated gorgeously by Alex Ross, I picked up this gem of story-telling. The chapters contained within the book are treasures of narrative that will keep one's attention without any trouble at all. I am a fan of the X-Men from 'that other Comic Book company'. But I get too caught up in the megalomania of those stories that I realized how much I saw that superheroes dealing with common criminals and situations are as much, if not more, compelling.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Gorgeous
This book reprints 6 special comics and does them justice. Alex Ross's art not only looks great, but tells the story well. The pretty pictures do not get in the way of the story. The book is smaller size than the originals, which were the size of the old LIFE magazine, but the art is not impaired in the least and the production values are top of the line. What makes the book worth having, though, are not the pretty pictures but the stories.Paul Dini writes stories which make each of the characters examine themselves, bringing us along in a thoroughly entertaining manner. He makes them very h
