Chasing Vermeer
5-0 out of 5 stars Chasing Vermeer Review by C. Shipman
When a priceless piece of artwork by Vermeer, a relatively unknown artist from the 1700s, called The Lady Writing is stolen on its way to Chicago, Petra Andalee and Calder Pillay take into their own hands to find it. These to eleven year olds find a old book by Charles Fort, which goes into detail goes into about coincidences between disappearing people and frogs. This book used to belong to their grumpy, old neighborMrs. Sharpe. Whose husband just happened to die an untimely death right after he made a breaking discoveryon Vermeer. All these thongs are oddly connected. The thief of The Lady Writing has a theory that not all of the work of art credited to Vermeer is his, and tells the public via the newspaper that he will destroy The Lady Writing if this mistake is not corrected. This turns out to be a hoax, the thief was working for someone who wanted to own The Lady Writing. It was his plan to let the public think that The Lady was destroyed. Petra and Calder find this out, and find out that the painting is hidden near they live, in fact it is in University by their houses. They rescueit, but not before the thief sees them and pursues them.Calder trips and hurts himself, and Petra runs off with the painting, and alerts the police.Calder manages to get away, and the thief is found dead on a train.Chasing Vermeer by an exciting art mystery that is sure to be an enjoyable read for any youth. 3-0 out of 5 stars Slowing down
Read all the books in this series. Booked and got this from my library, read it and returned it. Not as good as earlier books. That's it for this series. I may not read anymore. The author is now stuck in a rut

5-0 out of 5 stars AUTHOR D.J. MacHALE DOES IT AGAIN WITH PENDRAGON BOOK 7
I discovered the Pendragon book series when I was at Middle School, and just looking at the cover of book 1 The Merchant of Death, I became very interested in them. I read the first book when I was fourteen-years old, and I instantly fell in love with them. The whole storyline about a teenage kid writing and sending journals to his best friends describing his incredible and frightening adventure through space and time is very interesting, and the characters are well defined and have great dialouge and characteristics. So far each book has fascinated me, and I've never once been disappointed by any one of them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
I have been reading this series for a long time and every book has been my favorite. From the first book of this series to this last one, they are all very amazing books. The latest book, The Quillan Games, has a very interesting way of captivating the reader. There is action in every page of the book, and you never know what is going to happen next. Just when you think that you have figured things out, D.J. MacHale will throw in a twist that makes the reader want to read on to find out more. D.J. MacHale also has a way of revealing part of the truth about the whole series in every book, to allow the reader to try and figure out the truth and to think not only about that one book, but how to connect all the events in the whole series. The newest book includes a major breakthrough in that truth and creates you to want to read for hours on end. This is probably the most outstanding book I have ever read because of the way it enthralls the reader by the wonderful way that it is written. I recommend this book to all readers and I promise that they will love it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Silkstripe, thunderclan warrior
i loved this book.i bet crowfeather and leafpool will have kits, but cinderpelt will be keeping a close eye because she is already suspecting leafpool and they will be half-clan which really causes problems.i wish squirrelflight, (by the way, i love that name!) and brambleclaw liked each other still.brambleclaw is becoming untrustful, i mean, of course he wants to see his half brother, but me and my friend, Skyleaf, suspect he might kill firestar.or (as a hint in the new book cover) firestar might die by protecting his clan from a bear.who will become leader if he dies?graystripe is nowhere to be found! :( hopefully cody will help him find his way to the clans.by the way, i liked cody, she would have been a good queen.there is no deputy so no leader!i just know brackenfur and sorreltail will have kits.i love the new territories, though i miss the old land and characters like the elders.i cannot wait until twilight coes out!!it is sooo exciting!!!!! hurry up!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars ANYONE WHO THINKS THESE BOOKS SUCK, YOU SUCK

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming adventure story
The story (and series) centers on a family of four orphaned siblings, 14 year-old Henry, 12 year-old Jessie, 10 year-old Violet and 5 year-old Benny. The four have runaway and are attempting to live on their own in order to avoid being split up or sent to live with their mean grandfather. They locate an abandoned boxcar in the woods and set up housekeeping there. They manage quite well until Violet falls ill causing them to ask the local doctor for all.In the end though all is well.
5-0 out of 5 stars So simple and so wonderful!
These books are wonderful. My son who loves sci-fi, dragons and lego, thinks these wonderful books are AWESOME! They capture his attention like no others. As I read these to aloud to him, he laughs, asks questions and wishes he could be there. Although the writing is very simple, the ideas behind them are not. When I first started reading this series to him he said to me,"Mom while you are reading I always feel like I am there with the children doing what they are doing." "YEAH!" Great stories about children who are THINKING and I love my son to want to emulate that!

3-0 out of 5 stars If I were king of the forest...
I used to like these books. Now I think they are stupid. Especially Benny. He is so stupid. And he's really annoying. There has to be at least five billion books in the series. Anyone that has all of the books in the series must really, really, really, really, really love them. Why do they call their grandfather "Grandfather"? Violet's like "Oh Grandfather! You can have all of my internal organs if you want." Then Benny's like "What's green?" Then their Grandfather is always taking them on these pointless trips for no reason whatsoever. You would think that they would either run out of places to go or get tired of going on the trips. I would be suprised if they had a week at home in one year. Why do they call them the Boxcar Children? In some books they probobly don't even have the word boxcar in some of the books. Don't they ever go to school? Acually I wouldn't be suprised if Benny didn't go to school considering he's so stupid and annoying. They are so cheesy. No family gets along that well and never fights. If there was a family like that it would be a miracle. And I'm talking about ones with more than one child. And nobody has that perfect of a life. I bet they never had one problem or something bad happening to them in the hole series. If I never liked these books then I would have given this series one star. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best pop-up book so far.........
This is one of the best pop-up books around. I also LOVE his other book The Wizard of Oz. My daughter LOVES this book also! She brought it for show and tell and her classmates were oohing and aahing throughout the whole book. This is a must-have for your bookshelf. The pop-ups are very detailed and just amazing! 5 stars is just not enough for this 10+ stars book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gift
This book is an incredible pop up book!I purchased it for myfour year old daughter. There is too much text to actually read the story to her but we all know the story so we make it up and enjoy the pop ups.It is a book that requires supervision for younger children because the pop ups are delicate and amazing. It is a wonderful unique gift to give at birthday parties when everyone else gives toys! We love this book and have great interaction reading it and talking about the story and pop ups!

Editorial Review

Evidently not even Roald Dahl could resist the acronym craze of the early eighties. BFG? Bellowing ferret-faced golfer? Backstabbing fairy godmother? Oh, oh ... Big Friendly Giant! This BFG doesn't seem all that F at first as he creeps down a London street, snatches little Sophie out of her bed, and bounds away with her to giant land. And he's not really all that B when compared with his evil, carnivorous brethren, who bully him for being such an oddball runt. After all, he eats only disgusting snozzcumbers, and while the other Gs are snacking on little boys and girls, he's blowing happy dreams in through their windows. What kind of way is that for a G to behave?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING! For fans of Roald Dahl.
In England an orphan girl named Sophie couldn't sleep. At this time of night people called it the Witching Hour. They called it the Witching Hour because everyone is in a deep-deep sleep. Sophie sees a TALL DARK figure coming down the wrong side of the road. You have to READ the rest of the book.I enjoy it because its's funny and exciting.

3-0 out of 5 stars The BFG Review
The BFG is a fictional chldren's book. It was written by Roald Dahl and it was published in 1982. Roald Dahl is a great author and he has written other children's books such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Bedtime Story for Kids and Adults Alike
I remember reading this book several years ago and reading it on the bus and at school and before I went to bed. It brought me back to my childhood and the creativity and imagination I had as a child, and I'm sure several readers felt the same way. The story is fun and engaging, and so it makes a great bedtime story that you can read to yourself or to a child who still loves a good tale read out loud. ... Read more

Leven Thumps returns! Obert Skye's second book, "Leven Thumps and the Whispered Secret," is a much-anticipated sequel to "Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo." In the first book readers learn about the existence of Foo and meet Leven, Winter, Clover and Geth among other delightful characters. In this second book, readers are able to explore Foo itself and hope that it will still be there at the end of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to flesh out characters!
Hats off to Mr. Salvatore on taking a step away from Drizzt.I really enjoyed the way in which he fleshed out some of his characters in a bold new adventure.Nice to see other life within the Realms and the Wizards has given R.A. some breathing room to explore new stories. As he said in his interview with Wizards, it is a dungeon crawl and a very good one.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of his best
this book will keep you reading all night! i read it while camping and i couldnt put it down. the vivid imagery helps you really SEE the story, and HEAR it. the characters are interesting and grow tremendously throughout the book. there are many jokes and subtle hints at things that Salvatore doesnt really describe. has a lot ofadult material in it though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Series
The Spiderwick Chronicles is a tale about 3 siblings, Jared, Simon and Mallory. The children, along with their mother, move into an old and battered estate, only to find secret creatures milling about everywhere.
3-0 out of 5 stars Very easy
This is a good book sereies. It is very short and easy. You could a volume of it in at the most an hour. Want a book that doesn't take forever to get to the good stuff. Read this. My favorite was the action packed Wrath of Mulgrath. The Iron Wood Tree and The Seing Stone are good too. I wasn't to impressed with The Feild Guide or Lucindas secret. But the Feild Guide was good enough to turn me on to this series and I'm sure it'll be the same for many others to come. If you want better books with a touch of the super natural read Deltora Quest Forests Of Silence. It will turn you on to a whole other series filled with magic and action. Neither Of these are for little kids. Spiderwick would be suitable for age eight and up. Deltora is suitable for ten and up. Either way Spiderwick is great and has turned me into lover of books. It May do the same for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Spiderwick Chronicles
My baby brother reads Spiderwick and from his giggles I know he likes it. The Spiderwick Chronicles is one story spread over five books. The books are very short, about 120 pages each with many illustrations, and it took me a little over an hour to read each book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Boy who wants Freckles
Andrew Marcus wants freckles like Nicky Lane because his mother would never notice that his neck was dirty. Sharon said her family had a secret recipe for freckle juice and she would sell it to Andrew for 50 cents.Andrew thinks about the deal and then the next day at school he buys the freckle juice. Sharon throws the recipe onto the ground and when Andrew tries to pick it up, he falls on the ground.Miss Kelly, his teacher called him up to her desk ,takes the recipe and reads it. She says she will give it back to him at 3 o'clock.Andrew gets the recipe amd makes the freckle juice at his house. He smells it and it smells horrible. He drinks a sip and spits it out. Andrew then drinks the whole glass of freckle juice. The next day he doesn't have freckles. Andrew goes to his art bin and opens the drawer and looks for a brown magic marker. He finds a blue magic marker and puts freckles on his face with the magic marker. He goes to school with the freckles on his face. Miss Kelly gives him a freckle remover recipe to help him get the magic marker off his face.
5-0 out of 5 stars LESSON WELL LEARNED AND HUMOR TO BOOT
I enjoy books for the young ones that give them a good lesson on life and give them a chuckle or laugh while doing it.Be happy with the way you look, be satisfied with yourself and hidden in that message is one that well shows there are no free lunches in life.the 1971 edition I have has some very well done black and white drawings which are quite charming themselves. This is a great book to read to a class as it creates much discussion and allows the children to relate their own wishes and discuss them. This is one of those books that I hope does not go out of print as it has a timeless quality about it.Highly recommend.

Editorial Review

He may be an old standby, but he never lets us down. When in doubt, turn to the story of the cat that transformed a dull, rainy afternoon into a magical and just-messy-enough adventure. There's another, hidden adventure, too: this book really will help children learn to read. With his simple and often single-vowel vocabulary, the good Doctor knew what he was doing: hear it, learn it, read it--laughing all the way. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Favorite! More than meets the eye!
The Cat in the Hat at first glance may seem like a nonsensical text meant merely to amuse its readers. If you stop and ponder this story of two children left at home alone one afternoon, you soon realize there is a more powerful message than first meets the eye. The children clearly know the difference between right and wrong, but with the slightest influence from the Cat, they easily give in. I believe the fish represents their conscience. They choose to ignore its warning time and again, and therefore, find themselves in a mountain of mess. Before the story's end, they are able to right the wrongs, but we as readers are left with this thought and question: "Then our mother came in and she said to us two, "Did you have any fun, tell me what did you do?" Should we tell her about it? Now what SHOULD we do? What would you do if your mother asked you?" (Seuss, 60-61).

5-0 out of 5 stars Among the Free
Luke, a third child wanted the population law gone. It was that, because of droughts that nobody was allowed more than 2 children. When he figures out the population police were overthrown he goes to check it out.
3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Ending to a Good Series
Among the Free should have been the exciting climax to a well-done series about illegal third children fighting the Population Police.Instead, it is rushed and unbelievable, with Luke, our hero from the first few books, still unsure of himself and still being led by the voice of his friend Jen instead of thinking things through for himself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilling end to gripping series
I've been reading this series since the first book. It never dissapoints. Each book is a pageturner, that I can't put down, and this one was the same. It focuses on Luke the boy who we were first introduced to on the first page of "Among the Hidden". It follows Luke through a fast paced adventure, exploring the nature of people, government, and righteousness. If you liked the other books, you will not be dissapointed by the thrilling finale to this seriously. I literally squealed as I read it and surprsing twists continued to be thrown. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great story and a fun read, but a few mixed impressions
I am not a purist, but the obvious taking from Harry Potter is a wee annoying - there just didn't seem any reason for it.I don't feel these decisions moved the story forward because of its familiarity, so much as jar the reader out ofthe story - which was a shame.Would have been easy to stay in her own world, and we, the reader, would have too.Poor writerly decisions, in my opinion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just as Magical as the Harry Potter series!

Editorial Review

When poor James Henry Trotter loses his parents in a horrible rhinoceros accident, he is forced to live with his two wicked aunts, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. After three years he becomes "the saddest and loneliest boy you could find." Then one day, a wizened old man in a dark-green suit gives James a bag of magic crystals that promise to reverse his misery forever. When James accidentally spills the crystals on his aunts' withered peach tree, he sets the adventure in motion. From the old tree a single peach grows, and grows, and grows some more, until finally James climbs inside the giant fruit and rolls away from his despicable aunts to a whole new life. James befriends an assortment of hilarious characters, including Grasshopper, Earthworm, Miss Spider, and Centipede--each with his or her own song to sing. Roald Dahl's rich imagery and amusing characters ensure that parents will not tire of reading this classic aloud, which they will no doubt be called to do over and over again! With the addition of witty black and white pencil drawings by Lane Smith (of Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars james and the giant peach
This book was an okay one. It was a little weird, but I liked to read it. They had a lot of unrealistic stuff in it like a peach growing at an amazing rate. There was a cloud that turned into a mean rhino and scared James. There was a flying peach because they made a balloon. This book is recommended for grades 5th to 6th.

5-0 out of 5 stars Always a Pleasure!
We do seem to love the story of a child whose life is so miserable that it begs for a magical rescue and an exciting, dangerous and hair raising adventure. In James and the Giant Peach we meet one James Henry Trotter, one of these very same children who like his predecessors and successors (Harry Potter, Cinderella, Those Lemony Snickett Children, Hansel & Gretel, ect...) is leading a desperate and miserable life with is two wicked aunts...his parents were eaten by a wild, rampaging rhinoceros (naturally). On one particularly bad day, Henry hides behind some bushes and meets a strange old man who gives him some magic crystals (green glowing pellet things), which he is supposed to drink (mixed with water and ten of his own hairs), but of course he promptly trips and spills them on the ground under an ancient and withered peach tree. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
James and the Giant Peach is about the adventures of a boy named James and his gigantic peach. At first James lived with his parent's until they died. Then James came to live with his Aunts. The Aunts were mean to James. When James was out one day an old man gave magic seeds to James.James was supposed to run home and drink them for his life to get better. But he dropped the seeds into the soil and into the peach tree and the peach tree grew a gigantic peach. One night James went into the peach and saw huge bugs with real personalities. The Peach rolled into the ocean and the bugs and Jame's were trying to get out of the ocean. The silk worm made string and attached them to sea gulls. They caught so many sea gulls that they started to rise from the ocean then they drifted off into the sky and eventually they got stuck on top of the Empire State building's needle. The policemen got them off the building and onto the ground and they were all treated like heroes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Before I begin reviewing this book I must tell you that I am not Charles Moore but his daughter who loves the Tiffany Aching books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Discworld
I've decided he's too good and too prolific for me to write a brand new review every single time I read one of his books. Discworld currently has 34 titles and every one of them will probably knock your socks off. His mind bubbles and flashes like a boiling pot of electric eels, and I simply can't get enough of his writing.
