Editorial Review

For the untrained observer, it can be quite a challenge to sort out the many trees that make up a stand of older forest in, say, New England or the Ozarks. This well-illustrated guidebook, covering 364 species, comes to the rescue with photographs organized in several ways: by, for example, the shape of the leaf or needle, by the fruit, by the flower or cone, and by autumn coloration. Following one visible characteristic or another, the reader can narrow the range of possibilities, then turn to an informative text that describes a tree's physical characteristics, habitat, and range. Many of the species covered are relatively rare, such as the "stinking cedar" of the Georgia-Florida border; others are locally abundant, such as the paper birch of the boreal forest, used to make ice-cream sticks; still others, such as the smooth sumac, are widespread. The guidebook also covers ornamentals introduced from other continents, such as the Chinese privet and Mahaleb cherry. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Boy Scouts
This field guide is just what the doctor ordered for teaching young Boy Scouts about trees. The leaf and bark pictures are excellent, and the organization of the book is superb.Spend a few minutes going through the examples in the front as to how to most effectively use the guide.I was so impressed with this guide, that I went back and ordered another guide in the series that the Boy Scouts will find helpful - the guide to the night sky and constellations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
We took this book on a camping trip last weekend in North Mississippi and were able to identify every tree that we attempted to.This is a VERY GOOD field guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars What you would expect
I needed this book for my science olympiad team.It is exactly what you would expect from the Audubon society.Great colors, good quality, great examples. I ordered many other field guides at the suggestion from other teachers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids love this book
I have a 3 year old and 5 year old who love the books of Mo Willems. Recently the 5 year old took this book to school as his 'show and tell' in order to read it to his class. It was a huge success! We started our Mo Willems collection with 'Don't let the Pidgeon drive the Bus', we've added 'the Pidgeon finds a Hotdog' and 'Don't let the Pidgeon stay up late' and just recently added this book and 'the pidgeon has feeling too'. I love these books because my kids love them and that encourages them to keep reading! Well done Mo Willems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
Our first Mo Willems book was Knuffle Bunny and we were hooked. We've sinced bought 4 more of his books including The Pigeon Loves Things That Go! They're all great. Our kids love them and for kids books they're pretty darn amusing for adults too. Good stuff!

2-0 out of 5 stars boring
great bed time book its so boring it put us all to sleep - not a cool as the hot dog or dont let the pigeon drive the bus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharp Looking Book
My daughter has loved Thomas since she was about a year old (she's 3 now) and this was a great present because A) She LOVES anything Thomas, B) She wants to read this book all the time and C) It seems to have sparked a love for books.
5-0 out of 5 stars great Thomas collection
My son is a large Thomas fan. he first knew Thomas just from the trains, then he saw the show. Since he loves to read I wanted to combine 2 of his favorite things. This book did just that. It's a nice hardcover edition with enough Thomas stories to keep anyone entertained for a long time. There are nice pictures and an attached bookmark for him to keep track of his place. Highly recommend

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Pleasant Surprise
My adorable 2-1/2 year old grandson just loves Thomas The Train. However, his Nana (me) doesn't have a clue.So not to be ignorant, I ordered this book and was thrilled to see the wonderful illustrations as well as finding it to be a "story collection" about all the different trains. My grandson actually named all the different trains (how he does this I do not know), and I could verify that he was correct by reading the stories. The book is kept at Nana's house and Braden looks forward to reading it every time he comes for a visit. I don't think anyone would be disappointed in this book.It would make a wonderful gift! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book is an excellent resource for those teaching mathematics to students in the primary grades. The authors provide rationale for concepts taught, games to be played, and templates of materials needed. There is also a website to get additional resources from.My students have enjoyed the games and I have enjoyed using it.

5-0 out of 5 stars good supplement
I'm a firm believer of practice early on math. It will build kid's interest and confidence for the long run. This book is invaluable. It breaks grade 3 math into small pieces and let your child do a little every day. My daughter learned a lot from this book. She often asks further questions and thinks a lot more. It helped her do well in math. In the Beestar online math contest (a nice web site http://www.beestar.org), she often wins honor mentions. Very good math supplement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Way to Keep Up
As a homeschooling mom, the search for texts is difficult! This is not our main math text, but an easy way to keep my child up to speed in many different areas of math. For example, if we are studying geometry, he will still get daily practice in addition and subtraction...We use this book daily.I would recommend it as a supplement for any math program. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
I bought this book for my 2yr old and he loves it! My 4yr old loves it too. It does a great job teaching kids the cycle of life. The photos are wonderful and the story is simple enough to keep little ones interested, yet gives a great explanation about the circle of life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Visuals
A wonderful, graphic book about the circle of life. Why are kids so fascinated by pumpkins? Take a look at this visually intense book and see why. The photographs are definitely the feature here, but the text is not bad either, and keeps it at just about the right pace for a 3-5 year old audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for pirate lovers - parents of easily frightened young ones should take caution
I bought this for my 4 year old son who LOVES pirates right now after viewing the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie and seeing the "Tall Ships" on the Great Lakes.I was afraid he would be scared by the pirates turning into skeletons, etc. but he was not - in fact he wanted to watch it again and again. So when I saw this book I knew he'd love it, and he does.Every night before bed he takes out all the separate letters and cards, has me read them, then puts them back in their envelopes. He also has me read all the different types of ships over and over again - he can now name some ship types by memory. This book is very well laid out - even I find the information very interesting and learned things I did not know.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fun
My young son and I were both thrilled with this interesting book. All the extras fascinated my son as I hoped they would.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Resource and Just Plain Fun
This is an attractively put together book on the history and details of pirate life. I have been searching for a resource on the subject that presents information on pirates in such a way as to not seem tedious and boring, but instead inspiring and fun (which, as we all know--pirates are fun!). With all the interest sparked on the pillaging bands of men, and sometimes women, with recent films this volume is a must have for anyone with an interest in pirates. Of course, it would obviously appeal to children and is definitely appropriate for that tender age group, but adults can also find much to appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant, brilliant answers
Epstein presents a bunch of physics problems, and solves them all -- almost without any math -- with clear, insightful, elegant solutions. A brilliant book useful from grade 10 to grad school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Book
No, this isn't a perfect book. Some of Lewis' explanations are a bit vague and some are incomplete but despite these minor flaws this book does a wonderful job of explaining important concepts of physics in very simple terms.5-0 out of 5 stars teachs you how to think about physics problems
I like this book because it has interesting and motivating physics problems that can be solved without math, but with just carefull thinking on the truly physical aspects and principles. I do not mean that math should not be used in physics books, nor that all physics problems can be solved without math, but problems that do not need math are also very interesting and should be taught; this book is very good in doing that. I think this book would be very useful in high school (as complement to conventional books) because it would have great effect on kids's mental habits and rational thinking.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magical Story of Love and Hope
This is one of the most inspirational children's books I have ever read. The message is simple but powerful and an inspiration for all. It is part Pinocchio, part Pride of the Yankees, and it works. For anyone who has ever had a child go through any kind of serious illness, it is a wonderful reminder of how sometimes the smallest thing can suddenly reach out to that child and bring them back to you, and how you should never give up fighting. For those who have lost a child, it is a powerful lesson in love, hope and strength. For those whose lives have never been touched by serious childhood illness, it is a chance to reach out and hug your own kids and realize just how special each and every child is and how much they bless your life. It's all about believing, and the message comes through loud and clear. This book should be on every child's bookshelf, in every classroom and in every library. It is a story to read again and again. The illustrations are just perfect for the story, gentle and magical. Since the proceeds of this book go to charity, you are not only sharing the magic of The Boy of Steel with your own children, you are helping other children as well. Young or old, you will be touched by the inspirational story and the simple style of the author. It is a book I now proudly own, and my child, a survivor of serious childhood illness, is now 20. It is a wonderful reminder for me that I am one of the lucky ones -- truly blessed to have my son. He has read it, too. Read The Boy of Steel and share the message of love with others. It truly has touched my life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for getting kids to read
I bought this for my nephew for his 10th birthday. When he opened it he said "now I can take my name off the list at the library cause I OWN it" For the rest of the party he regaled us all reading from the book. In the hour he owned the book he learned several new words. What a great way to get kids to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift book forlittle boys!
My nephew LOVED it. I expected more pictures and less text but it didn't bother the 8 year old. He got tons of thrills just from the kid picking his nose on the cover. Perfect gift for a wild little boy along with a container of that oozing slime you get at Walmart. (the fits of giggles from the booger jokes are worth everything)

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Child needs to sit on a pumkin at least as big as they are!
I discovered and checked this book out for the first time a few weeks after I had taken my son to the pumkin farm, and after Thanksgiving had passed. We were delighted with the beautiful artwork (colored pencil drawings). The texture and dimension in the artwork is exquisite. The simple story line is perfect for the young child of 2-5.Jamie is met with a variety of curious animals while he pursues a journey of growing and harvesting his very own pumpkin, carving it, decorating his face for Halloween (you hardly notice this in the soft hues of the artwork, but his pet dog certainly does)and saving the seeds for the next season (six, to be exact). It would make a fine early reader as well for a k-2 reader.Nice book!

5-0 out of 5 stars All the children I've read this too loved it.!
I got this book many years ago, when I took care of a class of 4 year olds. They loved this book and read the book with me.Now that I have a child of my own (almost 2 years old) it is his favorite book.I read it sometimes 10 times a day and it has wonderful illustrations.I never tire of it and am looking to buy more of Jeanne Titherington's books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for teachers
I teach English to a fifth grade that had very little instruction in the past. I gave this book to three girls and they could understand the meaning of words using the picture clues. One of them had never heard the word pumpkin before, let alone sprout or seed. Now they all have a better vocabulary. Last year I read the same book to a first grade that did not have English classes. I used the story to teach plant growth and sequence concepts. The year before I had also used it to teach subtraction and backward counting - Jamie saved 6 seeds. He plants one. He still has 5, and so on. Read more
