4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!!!
This books deals great with strangers. It also shows not to judge a person by the outside. The only thing it needs is to tell kids what to do if a stranger does capture them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!
I think this was the perfect book to teach my son about strangers.I tried to introduce the idea to him myself, but I couldn't explain what a stranger was without scaring him.He already likes the Berenstein Bears so this put a tough subject on his level and did a great job explaining the differences in strangers.I would recommend this book to everyone with a young child and I will be purchasing more copies for my nephews as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superlative bookshould stave off "nature-deficit disorder". . .
This book is an absolute delight, and the 'pairing' of poet and artist is inspired. Beckie Prange's woodcuts are reminiscent of the genius of work by Gustave Baumann(1881-1971: Chicago, Brown County INDIANA, & New Mexico).
5-0 out of 5 stars Listen for me on a spring night...and I'll sing you to sleep
Take it from one who grew up -- and still lives -- across the street from a pond, Joyce Sidman knows pond life! With the beautiful, strong first poem "Listen to Me" about the peeper frogs waking in the spring, SONG OF THE WATER BOATMAN introduces readers to all aspects of pond life, from cattails to painted turtles to the food chain. In addition to poems written a variety of styles, Sidman also includes a paragraph of interesting facts about the subject. And it's all capped off with the Caldecott-honor-worthy woodcuts created by Beckie Prange. All in all, a wonderful read-aloud for kids grade 1-4 studying ponds, ecosystems, or poetry...or just for fun. "Listen to Me" joins my personal list of all-time favorite poems.2006 Caldecott Honor Book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bug bug bugsy
Poetry's not my bag, baby, so when I find myself reviewing a children's book of poetry my confidence just ooooozes away.Oozily.I know enough about poetry to know that I can't judge meter or metaphor or any of that jazz.I can tell if a line scans or not, and that officially marks the limits of my poetry-criticism qualifications. It's so much easier when a book garners universal praise. That way I know it's good and I can follow suit. Now as of this review "Song of the Water Boatman" has appeared on School Library Journals Best Books of 2005, the Boston-Globe Winners of 2005, the Bulletin of the Center For Children's Books Blue Ribbon Awards of 2005, and the New York Public Library's 100 Titles For Reading and Sharing circa 2005.Oh.And a little something called the Caldecott Honor, but who's counting? From all these high muckety-mucks in their own little separate worlds, I can only reach the obvious conclusion that there's something pretty cool going on with "Water Boatman" here.A quick peek inside, a swift skimming of a poem or two, and then an in-depth read of every word and image did indeed convince me that it's a lovely work.Would I go about handing it shiny silver medals?Probably not.But as poetry goes it's gorgeous and, almost more importantly, there's a little non-fiction stirred into the mix for spice!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good primer for younger teenagers.
This is a primer for younger teenagers. It is well written, although it needs to be updated in 2006. It is a textbook more than a think piece. It is a good starter book for parents and younger teenagers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Changing Bodies out of date
I was very disapointed with the book. Expanded third edition was deceiving because I thought it was new - my oversight. The book is out of date - I oversee a Center that teaches sex education and this was not helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really Fun Math Adventure
Introducing Geometry has now been made more fun.Cindy Neuschwander has given upper grade teachers an exciting way to introduce a somewhat complex subject through the adventures of Radius, son of Sir Cumference and Lady Di of Ameter. This beautifully written and illustrated book has Radius out on an adventure with only a circular medallion (a protractor which is included with the book) to use to find his way through a maze of angles. Students will love the twists and turns the hero Radius encounters but solves and will be excited to learn how to use their own "circular medallion." I enjoyed this book and will be recommending it to appropriate teachers who I work with as a student teacher supervisor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
I am a sixth grade teacher and I have found the best way to cut down on behavior issues is to provide materials for students at their developmental level. Each year I have a group of students who love math and who ask for extra homework. Why? I allow them to use the saxon 87 book. The book is easy to understand and the kids can teach themselves. I stop by this high group to check that they understand the concept and away they go. Most of the math books that I have encountered are not that way -at all!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Books and we use them daily in Home educating

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
My children have been using Saxon Math for 3 years.I love how the book uses the repetitive form to insure they do not forget the things they have learned.I also love that the book uses small steps each day so as not to overload the childs mind. Each lesson teaches one step which they master before going on to the next step. Also Saxon lists the chapter reference in parentheses under each number in the practice problem sets for each lesson so if they still don't understand they can go back and refresh their memory. If not for Saxon my children would not be doing so well in Math. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding resource for teachers
There are a plethora of books out about inquiry, the hot new buzzword in science education. This one has real substance. As a scientist, I think Llewellyn captures the true nature of science inquiry. As a teacher and professional developer, I especially like the self-assessments and rubrics to help make the transition from traditional practice to inquiry-based practice in the classroom.I use it so often that I keep losing it because I am always lending it to someone. This book will be useful to anyone who teaches science and wants to reach more kids more effectively. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A demonstration of the good just one person can do
This is the story of an extraordinary little girl. Alexandra Scott was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a form of cancer, when she was one year old. When she was four, she decided to build a lemonade stand and donate the proceeds to the hospital where she was treated. News of Alex and her goals spread, so that others decided to help her raise money. Now there is a foundation (Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation) dedicated to continuing her work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Story!
This is one of my new ALL TIME favorite books!I first came to know Alex on the TODAY show with Matt Lauer. She inspired me so much that I bought lemonade from every stand I could find that summer!I was so sorry that her little life was cut so short, but so thrilled that her spunk and determination and vision live on!EVERY child should be exposed to and read this book! There is no excuse for every library to not have it, and for every parent to not read it!Open a lemonade stand, and continue Alex' dream!

4-0 out of 5 stars Amusing catapults, interesting history, but no metric units
This book contains easy-to-follow instructions on how to build different catapults. Unfortunately there is no data regarding approx. distance and height for the suggested projectiles, why you must try for yourself. All units are english/american, which means you must translate this to metric units if you are more used to that.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for siege weapon builders
This is a juvenile title that is well illustrated with step by step directions for building several working models of weapons (from a simple sling to a trebuchet). It even gives directions for making rope. In addition to showing how to make siege engines, it covers their history, the reasons they were developed, how they were used and what caused a decline in their popularity. I can see a student using this book to make a model for a history class, or an SCA group adapting the information for a full-sized weapon.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent story book and manual.
This book is divided as chapters that begin with a narration of a battle or siege, and then and then presents the instructions on how to build several catapults. I learned my archetype of a catapult is an onagre, and that is one of the oldest kind, so I am severely obsolete. The instructions on how to build the models are very clear and easy to follow. The book is appropriate for young audiences, yet entertaining for adults too.

This is not a review of the books, but of the Amazon entry for this item. It's a slipboxed collection of six books out of the series.Fine, but which six? There are forty books in the series, after all.Nowhere on the page can I find this information. You'd think the actual titles of the books are kind of important....
5-0 out of 5 stars Great encouragement for Thomas fans!!
I bought these books for my 3 year old die-hard Thomas fan a couple of months ago. He absolutely loves them! He has me reading them to him over and over again. The books are well illustrated. The stories are interesting and we learned some things about the Sodor railway that we didn't know before. I now use these books to encourage him to learn to read.Definitely a good investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful little books
My 2-1/2 year old loves these books. We read at least one of them just about every day. They are very sturdy, and have survived repeated hurls across the room when I'm ready to stop reading, but he's not. Most of the stories are featured in the "Thomas: The Early Years" DVD series with Ringo Starr and some of the DVDs with George Carlin, and so are very familiar.I highly recommend them to little Thomas fans! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What Do You Review With A Book Like This
This book is breathtaking, a real stand-out visually -- and at the same time grippingly educational and fun for kids. If you want to see that dawning light of curiousity and hunger for understanding in a child that's just learning that it's fun to learn, there's no better book than this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful as a read for science class!
I have read this selection to several classrooms. The students not only love to see the pictures, but they LOVE to guess as to the purpose of the tails and it is a great lead in for adaptation.Additionally, (as all elementary students love to do), they love to share their knowledge of the animals and share what they think. After a group read, this book has become popular with students who sometimes shy away from science but just become fasicnated with the facts and cool animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Won over
I had thought about buying this, but always decided not to. My son (5 years old) checked this out of the library on his own. He loves it. The cut-paper artwork is beautiful. Despite the fact-based discussion, it can be a very fun book to read. On the section about whales being able to hear sounds hundreds of miles away, my son always breaks into a whale song of his own. He also stunned his daycare teachers when they went on-line to check out his assertion that crickets had ears in their knees. So there you have it: fun, educational, beautiful! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Who can resist the allure of the hidden wilderness water hole? Certainlynot one rhino. Not two tigers. Nor three toucans. Pretty soon the delicious poolis drawing moose, catfish, pandas, tortoises... and more than 100 other crittersfrom Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and beyond. But is it our imaginationor is that rhino-sized water hole dwindling to a mere shadow of its former self,a puddle not fit for eight ladybugs, let alone 10 kangaroos? As the seasonschange across the world, and the animals get thirstier, the water supplydiminishes. Eventually, even the flowery-shirted frog that has stoicallylingered through the drought packs his suitcase and takes off. The only hope nowis a drop of rain on the parched earth...

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifilly Illustrated Children's Counting Book
I just added this to our collection of Graeme Base Books. We now have three.Anamalia helps teach the ABC's in a fun way -- The Water Hole teaches counting -- and The Eleventh Hour is a thinking book (try to solve the mystery!)All of his books are wonderfully illustrated. All of them have an underlying puzzle/theme to keep the children's interest. My 3 1/2 year old grandson is crazy about the Water Hole.Actually, all three of them are on the top of his list.He can look at the pages for a long time. That is something amazing since he is hyperactive and sitting doesn't happen for long. He's learning and can find many different things on each page.Since my children were young, these books have been cherished.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great reinforcer of previously learned lessons...
I was advised by a homeschooling guide to buy this book for my science classes some time ago.
