Editorial Review

One night, the sounds of New York City--the rumbling of subway trains, thrumming of automobile tires, hooting of horns, howling of brakes, and the babbling of voices--is interrupted by a sound that even Tucker Mouse, a jaded inhabitant of Times Square, has never heard before. Mario, the son of Mama and Papa Bellini, proprietors of the subway-station newsstand, had only heard the sound once. What was this new, strangely musical chirping? None other than the mellifluous leg-rubbing of the somewhat disoriented Chester Cricket from Connecticut. Attracted by the irresistible smell of liverwurst, Chester had foolishly jumped into the picnic basket of some unsuspecting New Yorkers on a junket to the country. Despite the insect's wurst intentions, he ends up in a pile of dirt in Times Square.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Falls Short of Wind in the Willows
When I read Wind in the Willows, I thought no other book could match its calm, slow, elegant pace, but this book does. However, I didn't find it measuring up to Wind in the Willows as far as a literary work goes. Why not? They're both written very eloquently (although I did think Wind in the Willows had some unnecessarily advanced vocabulary) and they both had outstanding and lovable characters. What's A Cricket in Times Square missing?I looked at all of the reviews here, and couldn't figure out why I didn't want to give A Cricket in Times Square any more than three stars. Then it hit me.Location!Lack of location to be exact.

5-0 out of 5 stars the beginning of a beautiful friendship!!
In this, the prequel to "Cricket in Times Square", we meet the very young Tucker Mouse and Harry Cat.Well, actually Harry KITTEN in this case. When our story opens, Tucker is wandering the streets of New York, lost, hungry, tired and even NAMELESS!Determined to make something of himself, he struts off down the street searching our first his own name and then his fame and fortune.A sweet shop gives him his name, and a young kitten, equally lost and alone, gives him friendship. Thus is born the friendship that many of us know and love from "Cricket" and Mr. Selden's other books. Together the pair set off to find a place to live. This proves to be a bigger, more complicated task than one might originally think!!The Empire State Building calls to them--why not live in one of the biggest buildings in the whole city? However, when they manage to finally find themselves in the basement where there are little or no people, the find themselves in a vast, cavernous tunnel of white tiles.LOST!!But, by keeping their wits about them, they manage to get back out on to the street. The old piers seem like a good place to live until our heroes are nearly crushed by falling debris from the crumbling buildings. An upscale park is quite beautiful and peaceful, but too ritzy and, well, DULL for our young companions.Deciding that this is still not the place for them, they set off again, this time toward Times Square. There, they finally find the home in the drainpipe readers know and love so well...There's just one problem though, and that's the local gang of rats with thick, New York accents who want to steal all of Tucker's life savings!! "Cricket in Times Square" is still an extremely popular book, though many of the other works by Mr. S. that feature the same characters are much lesser known. Not as many fans of "Cricket" go on to read "Tucker's Countryside" or "Harry Cat's Pet Puppy."I myself have read "The Cricket in Times Square" multiple times, but stumbles across this book, "Tucker Mouse and Harry Cat" rather by accident!I'm very glad I did, though!! Though the writing is a bit weaker than I expected--the story is certainly not as long as the other's in this series, nor are the events or characters fleshed out as much--it's still a very good book and worth reading.I think Mr. Selden intended this book to be for younger audiences than those who normally read "Cricket", for the story is easier to read with less detail. The pen & ink illustrations by Mr. Williams are as familiar and comfortable as those in the other books; I'm especially fond of the picture of Harry and Tucker clinging together in terror at being lost in the corridors of the Empire State Building! Weak or not, younger audience or not, this book is definitely worth reading, and will add so much to the beloved adventures of two beloved characters.Highly recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Whata find!
As a teacher, I have used Selden's " Cricket in Times Square" for years as a read aloud to my students. It was only recently that I began searching for more books by Mr. Selden.Harry Cat's Pet Puppy isdelightful.I know my students are going to fall in love with Huppy thepoor puppy that Harry found cast on a dark and dirty New York street. Needless to say Harrytakes him home to the drainpipe that he shares withTucker the mouse. Harry and Tucker find that having a growing dog can makelife in Times Square Subway station a bit difficult. This book uses tenderhumor to show that pets can bringwonderful joy and loads ofresponsibility to our lives. As always, Selden threads all the grand andsometimes terrible emotions of friendship throughout the book.Read andenjoy!

This book is a really cool book, produced by a very good author. It is about a dog, (Grubber) who's owner is going to be pushed out of his home by the council. He gets taken to jail, then rescued by a supposed rattlesnake. There are all sorts of twists and turns. Will the council push the old man out? Find out when you read this awesome book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars if you liked The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
This was one of my childhood faves...there's mystery, archaeology, opera, romance, New York City (uptown and downtown), a dog that becomes a man, and a genie that pops out of a carpet and saves the day.Written by George Selden (famous for penning The Cricket in Times Square), the author knewhow to mix the exuberance of youth with the anything-goes quality of Gothamto create a most clever tale (with a happy ending).A great read for smartkids with broad interests poised for adulthood. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars IRONIC ENDING
This is a very good book. We used this in our Helen Keller unit study. Annie had a life before Helen ! From trials to Teacher to student. This woman had quite a life. She really gave her life to Helen and is a good witness of " love your neighbor ". This may have started of f as a job, but became her life. I read the 1987 paperback edition.
