5-0 out of 5 stars Great Chapter Book for Early Readers
I sent this book for "silent reading" with my 7 year old to school. She's supposed to do 30 minutes a day.I was shocked when I picked her up and she was on page 80!I asked how she did that.Well, she found the book so engaging she took it to lunch, PE and read in between doing other work. She left it in her school desk and was screaming and running back to class to get it so she could finish it.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Father's Dragon--Not just for kids
I have loved this book since I first read it as a child in the early 50's.It's whimsical, fun, charming, and totally delightful.I hung onto the book for years, until it got lost in one of my many moves.I now have it again, and love it as much at 60 as I did at 6 or 7.And lest you think that it's only for simple minded adults--think again. My usual reading fare is much more complicated.I highly recommend it for children AND adults. ... I actually really wanted this set because the covers were so much better than the english versions, and I was unhappy that the cover was different and has a huge circle on it saying "now a major motion film!" The quality of the translation is great though, and even the pictures are the same as the set I have. I would recommend this book as a spanish translation!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book That Has Been Special To Generations Of Children
Strange in a way that I loved this book so much when I read it in fourth grade, because, ironically, in real life, horses kind of scare me. I think Walter Farley's book is magical and I hope others who read it find as much meaning as I did in the story of a boy named Alec Ramsey, who survives a shipwreck and befriends a magnificent black Arabian stallion. Yes, this enduring classic is basically a fantasy, but sometimes it takes fantasy to create a book that is capable of touching the human soul in the exact way this one does.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quality of the Black Stallion
I greatly enjoyed this book when I was younger, and I still like it. However, in recent years I have come to realize how prejudicially obsessed Walter Farley was about Arabians. Even in his book The Great Dane Thor, the horses only briefly mentioned in the book were Arabians. He didn't seem to realize that there were other breeds in the world. For instance, he had the Black's daughter, Black Minx run in the Kentucky Derby--a race exclusively limited to Thoroughbreds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drowned Wednesday is WONDERFUL!!!!
Drowned Wednesday, the 3rd book in The Keys to the Kingdom series, by Garth Nix, is a fantastically original read. (It is the 3rd book in the series, so you do have to start with the first book in the series, Mister Monday.) The characters are very well developed, and it is just as exciting as the previous books in the series. This book is a great blend of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Adventure that you will not forget! I can't wait to get my hands on the 4rth one in the series!
5-0 out of 5 stars a great bedtime adventure
I have read each of the Keys to the Kingdom books to my [...] every night before bed. We just finished Wens. and are looking forward to starting Thurs. I think the books are a great read even for younger kids who enjoy adventure books, if the parents are willing to help out the reader with the tougher words. I would strongly reccomend these books to children of any age, but also caution that some situation might be a little too scary if your child isn't used to "older" books. We read the Harry Potter series first and it is no scarier then that series.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Tale of the Whale
Wednesday being the third day of the week (if you don't start at Sunday of course), there are no prizes for guessing that this is book three of The Keys to the Kingdom series. If you haven't read Mister Monday and Grim Tuesday, please look no further - without the two preceding books you'll be up a creek without a paddle if you try this one on its own.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, accurate glimpse of Marie Antoinette before she became the pawn to a group of royals
The year is 1769. Thirteen-year-old Maria Antonia, Archduchess of Austria, is just coming into her own, finally being forced to bridge the gap between childhood and teenage-dom, but she cannot for the life of her leave behind her love of all things childish. From sledding to playing with dolls, and spending time with her seven-year-old niece, Titi. But her mother, Empress Maria Theresa will not stand for young Antonia's nonsense. She feels that by pressuring Antonia to excel at speaking French, riding horses, etiquette, reading, writing, history, and a slew of other tasks in which Antonia finds mundane, her youngest of fifteen brothers and sisters will win the heart of the future King of France, Louis Auguste, and be chosen to take her place beside him as the future Queen of France. Therefore, she must forfeit her childhood, and take on the role as perfect Princess. But that is easier said than done, for, while Antonia longs to rule a fashionable country such as France, she can't say goodbye to the many things she loves. However, she must learn to do just that, for in the blink of an eye, she is summoned by the King's messengers, and swept off to the foreign land. A place where she must leave behind everything she has grown to love over the years, including her family, friends, and belongings. Once in France, Antonia, now known as Marie Antoinette, realizes that things are not as splendid as she had hoped. Her fiance leaves much to be desired, the King's mistress, Madame du Barry is causing all kinds of trouble regarding her position, and she is forced to observe utterly ridiculous customs that make no sense. Now, young Marie Antoinette must find a way to stay strong, or lose the position that she has worked so hard to claim.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is such a great book. It's a real page turner. This book talks about Marie Antoinette as a 13 year old and how she's preparing for marriage, and it talks about her living with her mom. In the back of the book it has facts, paintings, and a family tree of the real Marie Antoinette.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different side of Marie Antoinette
It is 1796, and Maria Antonia is only thirteen years old. However, she is expected to marry the king of France.

For this enchanting novel Brian Jacques has brought to bear theexperience of his eventful and adventuresome life, a life which hastaken him all over the world and seen him variously described as folksinger, playwright, and broadcaster. No doubt his usual writingenvironment--garden in summer, conservatory in winter--provides himwith the ideal theater for observing the wildlife on which the book'sunusual central characters are based. 5-0 out of 5 stars Treacherous Foxes
In His novel of Redwall, Marlfox,Marlfoxes, the treacherous brood of Queen Silth, are lurking in Mossflower Woods. I like this novel because Brain Jacques combines adventure and humor. In this book the marlfoxes steal the great tapestry of Redwall Abbey. Songbreeze, Danflor, Barble and Dippler, young woodland creatures, set out to retrieve it. Along the way they face many dangers while back at the abbey there is trouble. Janglur, Songbreeze's father, slays the Marlfox Ziral. The Marlfox code states blood for blood, which means Janglur must be slain. As the creatures of Redwall fight for freedom at home and abroad friends are slain. By the time the tapestry arrives in Castle Marl, the slaves in Castle Marl are just waiting for freedom.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Go To Sleep!
This story is about a boy who hates his closet-sized room. After begging his mom to let him sleep in the guest room,he decides to sneak into the guest room.BIG mistake!!He wakes up a teenager! That and other nightmares taunt him in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Matt's Fault!
Poor Matt. When Matt is not allowed to sleep in the guest room, He sneaks at night and goes to sleep... And whenhe wakes up at Chapter 3 in the book. Something terrifying has happened...

3-0 out of 5 stars Look's like snooze time for me!
R.L. Stine throws a desperate attempt to satisfy his readers. It tricks me but I didn't connect with the book. Stine whips up a plain story about a anxious kid called Matt who suffers complete boredom and wants to sleep in a bigger room. With older siblings teasing him through every corner of life, he sneaks into the guest room and falls asleep. He wakes up and somehow finds himself in a reality time-warp. Waking up and finding himself turn into a different monster or human each time must be stressful. It aint scary. That's what Goosebumps books are all about. Just the pleasure of reading. But trust me, this isn't the best Stine book. It aint even the best Goosebumps book. But if you are a Goosebumps fan and adore his writing, you should go down to the library or bookstore to read it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Many pages, little of interest
This is a rather boring novel about a bunch of one-dimensional characters who are at war with a guy who lives in a tower. They are supposed to be good I think, and the guy in the tower is supposed to be bad. But as they all seem to have an equal penchant for fighting, and since we never get much insight into the tower-guy's personality or designs, it is hard to discern between them. Reading this book, I kept asking myself: Why couldn't the "good" just invite the tower-guy over for tea instead, maybe they could have become the best of friends?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great even though it wasn't about the band
Most people didn't like this book because it really wasn't about the oringinal charecters like Soren for instance. But in my opinion the book was far more interesting to read about because it starts "fresh" with a brand new charecter, a Barn Owl born from Tyrants with a good soul named Nyroc. And unlike Soren and the Band he is a recenly flegded owl that still breaks the rules and is still a kid. But this "kid" has to make alot of decisions that really affect your life as you are about to find out in the story if you decide to buy it but below I typed a breif sumary of the story's beginning started at the end of Book #6 in the Guardains of Ga'hoole series.

Nyra is certain that her son will lead the Pure Ones on to glory and the hostile opression of all the owl kingdoms. And Nyroc is more than ready for the task.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Complete Dramatization For Fans of the Book
I own both radio dramatizations (Minds Eye and BBC).On the whole I prefer the Minds Eye one. Both have their pros and cons, but as a fan of the book this one was more accurate to the story and conveyed a better sense of emotion than that of the BBC story. The BBC has a way better sound affects, overall better production value, and a more evened out (and higher priced) cast.Still, though, overall the Minds Eye produced better voices for Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Eomer, and Faramir than the BBC production did, and Frodo was well done also (just not as good as Ian Holm). However, the top factor for me was that the Minds Eye is just far more accurate to the book itself, for my money, than the BBC version.Others opinions obviously very.Know what you're looking for in whichever set you buy.

Back in the late 1970's, in an era when radio drama was disappearing from public radio, the American prodcution of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" were created with a full cast of voice actors along with music and sound effects.Reminiscent of the radio dramas of the 1940's and 50's, these productions were usually aired on Sunday afternoons, when a family could listen and enjoy the week's story.Released on Jabberwocky Audio on cassette tapes, I remember the Christmas when I received the entire collection of Jabberwocky's stories on tape. From "The Hobbit" to "Alice in Wonderland" to "The Red Badge of Courage," all were classic tales. They even re-released on cassette some of the original radio productions, such as "War of the Worlds" and "The Gift of the Magi."These stories were designed to get the listener interested and promote reading the books the productions were based on.They were not designed for an adult audience, but rather for children and families to share.Wonderfully edited and masterfully performed, many modern audiences find these old productions a little silly or even perhaps dated, but play it for a child, and they will listen in rapture, just as I did 25 years ago when they were new.Of all my collection of the Jabberwocky tapes, "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" are the only ones that I have trouble playing today, because they have been played so many times over the years that they are worn out.We would play them in the car on road trips, I would play them in my room while putting together a puzzle, and I played them for my friends, who enjoyed them as much as I did.I am delighted to have it on CD to listen to over and over again. At seven years of age, I had not yet read the books when I first listened to the tapes. But the tapes were perfect for a small girl just getting interested in reading. If only all the rest of the old radio dramas were also on CD!I would buy them all.It was unfortunate to come to this website and see the poor reviews written by people who have no understanding of the history of the production or what demographic it was originally intended for.I look forward to the day when I can play these CD's for my own children and see the wonder and delight in their faces when they hear the same stories that I grew up with. ... These books are great for kids who are reading early chapter books -- they're not terribly long, but they're quite creative. My son loves them!

2-0 out of 5 stars Need to cut out
I'm not sure why the description says "easy to remove" clothes, because I had to cut everything except the dolls out.Maybe they meant easy to remove from the dolls, or maybe I just got a bad lot!But I had no idea I was going to have to cut everything out in order to use it!My hand is hurting! It's a cute set but also a little flimsy (while punching out the dolls a couple of them tore on the tabs).

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun
I gave this to my granddaughter on her 5th birthday. Her mother had already been reading her the primary Little House books. She was a big fan of them so she was thrilled to get the paper dolls so she could act out some of the stories she had been hearing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Little Girl Play Day

5-0 out of 5 stars Great decent family time fun
After getting hooked to a radio book I heard almost 3 years ago I decided to look for other Christian based audio book stories that I could enjoy with my son.I bought this for him and we have heard several so far.The stories are played out in a very real and tangible way.We have sat in bed with our eyes closed and it feels like you're in a theater.Of course it helps if you have surround sound but sounds just as good if not.Great for long trips in the car or to just play on a rainy day at home snuggled under the covers. This type of story telling awakens the imagination of children in a way that TV will never!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining
Listening to the book in full theater format was very interesting and enjoyable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Narnia Radio Theatre - almost perfect
I do NOT enjoy audio books - I generally find them long and boring and would much rather use my own imagination than some actor's choice of cadence and emphasis. On the other hand, I loved (mostly) the BBC radio productions of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" which have become long road trip standards for our family.I have never found a comparable production until I discovered the The Chronicles of Narnia. The voices of the actors were VERY well done(with one exception) and the background sound effects and music were excellent and I found the connective narrative enough without being too much.On the other hand, I have read of the Narnia books so I may be unconsciously bridging gaps. Still, my husband, my son and my grandchildren have only read/seen "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" before hearing this set and had no problem with the other books, so the narrative is probably sufficient.I have two issues with the series which is why I awarded only 4 stars:

Our girls read this after a trip to the Amazon, and found lots that they recognized & enjoyed. The standard of information is rather higher than that in the Magic Tree house books, which is reasonable, given that they don't have to worry about plot & characters as well!Read more
