Editorial Review

Clearly one epic novel could never contain the hugely disgusting tale of the Bionic Booger Boy; it makes perfect sense that his story would spill out into Dav Pilkey's seventh epic novel in the Captain Underpants series, Read more

Yes, it took something totally "disgusting" to get my seven year old hooked on reading......but hey, I am not complaining. He is now carrying a book wherever he goes....who would have thought? When someone can get a kid to pick up a book and take along instead of the game boy.....well....just amazing!
1-0 out of 5 stars under wear man
This book was cool because if you had a guy in town that flew in his under pants that would be awsome. And how cool would that be if you a giant robot whit bogers all over so now you now ho cool this book is.

I thought this was a good boook, but I don't like the flip-O-ramas. The bad spelling and grammer makes it relly funny! I say you should buy it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure of My Childhood I Want My Grandchild to Read
About 60 years ago I read as many books from this series that I could find in my local public library. I had passed through a phase of devouring the Dr. Doolittle fantasy series (so damaged by the motion pictures using that title - how could they cast tall lanky Rex Harrison in the role of a short cuddly grandfather-like figure?) Another series in which, as an American boy fascinated by warplanes during the Worl War II era - I went on to become an aerospace engineer - I was enthralled, was "A Yank in the RAF", which I don't think would translate to the 21st Century very well. But the series that made the most impact on me was Ransome's Swallow family. As with Hugh Lofting's Doolittle, the author's drawings enhanced the books.
5-0 out of 5 stars ages 4 to 8?
A reading level of ages four to eight?I vigorously question that.Perhaps grades four to eight. The vocabulary, as is the case with many older books, is quite sophisticated. That said, this book is a treasure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rediscover lost childhood summers
I discovered SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS as a child of twelve and was thoroughly delighted. I cannot imagine why this classic series has not achieved the same status in the United States. This first volume in the series follows the children of the Swallow family as they summer in the English lake country. The story charts their adventures as they sail, camp, discover nature around them interact with each other and two girls from a houseboat (the Amazons). It is a lovely wistful book that evokes the grandeur of childhood games in nature. In the background of the story is a faint hint of the World War (the Swallows' father is in the Navy) but the sense that the children are being sheltered from adult concerns but that only heightens the loveliness of their childhood lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Katherine, but ...
Anya Seton is a masterful storyteller, transporting the reader back to the Dark Ages, to be immersed in a period of Viking raids on the British Isles and deceit, treachery and murder on the English throne. As is an indicator of good historical fiction, I was inspired to find out more about this time period, to learn which characters and events were historically documented and which were products of the author's vivid imagination. I also highly recommend Seton's "Katherine" for those who enjoy historical fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
Very enjoyable. It was nice taking a travel through history in a period of time not so frequently written about. The up and down see saw of Merewyn's and Ruman's star crossed love was heartbreaking at times. I don't want to say more to give out the end.
2-0 out of 5 stars I don't get all the hype
I love historical novels.I really like a good romantic tale woven into those stories. For that reason I read and enjoyed "Katherine" by Anya Seton.I later tried "Green Darkness" and was disappointed... and then tried Seton's "Dragonwyck" and really didn't care for it either. I saw these rave reviews over "Avalon" and decided to try another republished Seton book one last time. People, it is a chore to finish. I am doing so out of a sense of obligation... this book can't hold my interest at all.The writing is simplistic. The "romance" is dull. The story is painfully slow. The characters are FLAT. I just don't get it. There are so many wonderfully written historical romances out there - all I can think is that the reviewers who've raved about it aren't regular readers of this genre and therefore aren't comparing it to other books & authors such as Sharon Kay Penman, Nicole Galland, or even Elizabeth Chadwick (more pure romance set against history than a blend of the two). I just can't recommend this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Horrible, Boring Book
The whole idea of checking this book out from the library began when I realized that this story I was writing had a pretty similar plot as the story: a bunch of kids with these talents get called up to go to a special school, where they have their own rooms.
5-0 out of 5 stars WOW JENNY NIMMO
this story was great. It was jam packed with action I couldn't stop reading the book. It is a story of a boy whose family is made up of him, his mother, his nice grandma, and his grandma bone, who is always in his business. I suggest this book to anyone who lke stories that are full of adventure and have mystery

2-0 out of 5 stars The "Bad Apple" of the series
Now, before the "Castle if Mirrors", I was a big Charlie Bone fan, I could not wait for this book to come out.All of the other books had unique interesting plots. However by the time Nimmo got to this book, she lost her touch. For example, this book had way to much "Harry Potter" take offs, which you could easily find if youve read both books and paid even the slightest attention. Also so much of the information in this book was completely pointless and overloaded (unless she plans to use it for her later books. And what was really corny wasthe whole new thing about one of the characters whohas already been in the other books has just suddenly gained a power. Anways, readof you like, but I don't know if it will be worth it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nigh of the Ninjas
This book is a very nice mystery chapter book. When you finish it, you want to add a chapter or 2. This book is mostly about ninjas. Jack and Annie have a big problem to solve. Their friend, Molly, was in a trap! She sends them a letter. It says, "Help! In a land of ninjas! In a tree house!"Jack and Annie are afraid! They want to help Molly but they can't, that's because they don't know how to get to ninja's land. I won't tell you any more. If you want to know more, then read the book. I think it's a good book to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars An imperfect series that nontheless captures children's attention
The Magic Tree House series is a great idea that could be executed much better.I agree with some of the other reviewers comments regarding limited and in some instances dubious information on their subject matter. However, I am giving this book four stars because my five year old son loves it.I have found it a struggle to finds books that he will sit down and read with me and the fact that this book grasps his attention is a great credit to it.In fact, now that I have bought the first eight books in the series, his ten year old sisters are reading and enjoying them, also. These books serve the purpose of introducing a topic (usually historical) and sparking a child's that can then be pursued in other books.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dreaded Dissapointment
I am a huge fan of the Series Of Unfortunate Events & found this book only slightly entertaining. It in no way added anything to the series in any way.If you have read the books & the Unauthorized biography then you have all the info you need to not waste your money on this book.If you have not read the Unathorized Biography I would recomend spending you money on that first!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not an unpleasant book but an informative one
The claim on the back of "The Truth Behind A Series of Unfortunate Events: Eyeballs, Leeches, Hypnotism, and Orphans--Exploring Lemony Snicket's World" is that this volume is the "ultimate unauthorized companion guide to the facts behind Lemony Snicket's wild world."Since this is the only one I have seen it is hard to say whether that is hyperbole or not. What Lois Gresh has done in this book is to look beneath the fiction into the realities of the Lemony Snicket universe.Violet Baudelaire likes to invent things, so Gresh explains how to build a telephone and a hot-air balloon mobile home and throws in some fascinating tidbits about who really invented the telephone and little-known facts about hot-air balloons.Young readers will also be able to read about real child inventors and their amazing inventions. The information provided is much more expansive than you would find in an annotated edition of something, but that is the general intent.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read for Young and Old!
What makes the Lemony Snicket series of Unfortunate Events so entertaining is that they are books seemingly aimed at children and that yet can be read by adults as well, with as much pleasure if not more than children. These short novels are filled with sly jokes, clever asides, and enough silly situations that they cannot be mistaken for anything serious. That's what makes them so funny - they are an inside joke and all of the readers of the books are insiders.Reading Lois Gresh's wonderfully inventive "The Truth Behind A Series of Unfortunate Events" is a treat. The book provides an intelligent and yet funny look at the oddball facts and concepts mentioned in the books but never completely explained.Unlike the previous reviewer, you need a sense of humor to enjoy this book.It takes the Lemony Snicket world and examines it under a microscope. It's not meant to be a substitute for a Lemony Snicket book but a companion to all the Lemony Snicket books and it does a great job at being that. This is a book that any fan of the LS series who wonders about the many odd topics mentioned in the adventures but never explained will cherish. It is not a book for adults who possess no sense of curiosity. This is a book I think both kids and adults will enjoy.

Editorial Review

With very special cover illustrations by Peter Sís and anintroduction in each novel by the author, this boxed set of Madeleine L'Engle'smodern-day classic series in paperback is much welcome! L'Engle challengesconcepts of time, space, and the power of good over evil in each of her fourriveting novels. Sís's original new cover illustrations capture thehopeful innocence of the characters and the quirky cosmic tensions of theuniverse. In her introduction, L'Engle writes, "What a delight to see thesebeautiful new covers for the Time Quartet. It is another indication that storieshave a life of their own, and that they say different things to different peopleat different times. And it is an affirmation that story is true and takes usbeyond the facts into something far more real."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable by young and old alike!
The earth is surrounded by a sinister presence - a dark, foul fog that is the tool of an ultimate evil - whose ambition is to enslave the planet with the complete removal of free will. Three magical beings, Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who and Mrs Which - witches, angels, demigods perhaps - appear to Margaret and Charles Wallace Murry and their friend, Calvin O'Keefe, to persuade them that it is their destiny to battle this evil on its own turf and to rescue Margaret and Charles Wallace's father. Dr Murry has been missing for some months and the kids learn that he has been captured by the evil while he was "tessering", traveling time and space in the course of his scientific research.

Editorial Review

On an island off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland lives a centuries-old band of wild ponies. Among them is the most mysterious of all, Phantom, a rarely seen mare that eludes all efforts to capture her--that is, until a young boy and girl lay eyes on her and determine that they can't live without her. The frenzied roundup that follows on the next "Pony Penning Day" does indeed bring Phantom into their lives, in a way they never would have suspected. Phantom would forever be a creature of the wild. But her gentle, loyal colt Misty is another story altogether. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Misty of Chincoteague
Ms. Bailey's reading group recommends this book to anyone who likes horses or to people who live on a farm.Even though this book is an older book we still enjoyed it.We liked the dialect that Henry used for Grandpa Beebe. We thought it was neat to read about a true story. We think you should give this book a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Horse Lovers Greatest Adventure
This book is a time-winding vortex into a world from a different time. Misty is a young horse which is raised in the wild, by her imperial mother which is a legend. Her mother and her are captured by two young children. A boy and a girl, Misty's mom escapes into freedom but her beloved daughter,Misty, is still being fed, groomed, and raised by the two children. They have tons of fun and exiting adventures together! In the end something amazing happens Misty.... Sorry you have to read it on your own! I think the authers main message is to try new things in life by showing tat through Misty. I absolutly adored this book and have read it now at least 4 times! I really hope you take my advice and read this outstanding book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ~ except for the pony tail
Overall a very nice doll. The attention to detail is great. The doll has a cloth body, and an intricate removable dress just like the big dolls. The $12.97 along with free shipping make it worth the price. It is very small ~ on the order of a Kelly doll. Only negative ~ the doll's hair is not really up to AG standards. The front it pinned back and the little tendrils are sweet but the pony tail leaves a lot to be desired. It is more on the order of Barbie hair and I am sure it will look ragged in no time. If I had paid $20 plus shipping I would have been very disappointed and sent it back. All that said ~ my daugther loves it! She received it for Easter along with the Felicity short story collection. I am sure she will be reenacting Felicity's adventures and now her big doll can have her own AG doll too. If the hair will be an issure for you and you don't need this particular doll you may want to consider Josefina with her nice tight braid.

4-0 out of 5 stars a doll just like the regular-sized american gir ldolls!!
Looking for an american girl without the huge price, or a doll for your american girl doll? This felicity mini doll would be ideal for you. She really does move like a regular doll, and you can take off her clothes too. Her hair is shiny and reasonably untangled, and she comes with her own mini book, which is abriged. I really like this doll as a doll for my dolls. I wish that she could come with a line of clothes for mini dolls, though. Then, it would be really fun to own an american girl mini doll. ... Editorial Review

British boy with catchy name and unusual powers, check. Wild hair, check. Students at boarding school, check. Owls and funny street names, check. Mysterious shape-shifting enemies out to get the affable boy protagonist, check. Jenny Nimmo's"Children of the Red King" series (starring Charlie Bone) has so many ofthe same trappings as the Harry Potter series that, unfortunately, comparison is unavoidable. Rowling's books clearly trump these simpler fantasies for younger readers--but the Charlie Bone books are finding their audience in those who need a boy-wizard fix and need it now.Read more

great book my fave... its about charlie bone lol and he goes to this school that he like lives at and... dotn want to give it away

4-0 out of 5 stars Charlie Bone (the american Englishman)
I really enjoy this series, it's a great to read while waiting for the next Harry Potter book. These books are written for younger children, so there is pretty much no thinking involved (always a plus) and it is a breeze to read.I will admit that it is very much like Harry Potter, but Charlie Bone is a fun read anyway. The only thing that kept this book from being five stars is the annoying fact that they still haven't got a clue who Charlie's father is.I haven't read the 4th or 5th one yet, but it is still painstakeingly obvious that Mr. Pilgrim is Charlie's father.Anyone with half a brain could figure that one out.Just think about it, and you have to admit that it totally makes sense. It just bugs me that these people who are always solving all of these other mysteries can't see what is right in front of their noses. How stupid can you be?How on earth can you not see that Mr. Pilgrim is Charlie's dad!AAARRGG!Another thing that bugs me is the fact that even though the setting for this book is England, no one says any English stuff, like mum or whatever. They are so American sounding!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Invisible Boy
Charlie Bone and the Invisible Boy written by Jenny Nimmo is a great book. It is a really cool fantasy book. It is an outstanding mystery-like story about a boy named Charlie and his friends Emma, Fidelio, Gabriel, Billy, and others all trying to make it through another tough semester at Bloor's Academy. You see Charlie is endowed with special powers. His endowment is that when he looks into a photograph he somehow becomes part of the picture. One day while investigating the Bloor's campus Charlie discovered an invisible boy, Ollie Sparks, living in the attic. Ollie had been squeezed by the 'blue boa' and now he is completely invisible, except for his big toe!!! Now Charlie will do anyhting to make him visible and reunite him with his brother who is the art teacher at Bloor's, Mr. Boldvoka. When Charlie's only hope of help, his Uncle Paton, goes missing Charlie must face all of the adventures on his own. What happens then his 'star witness' Mr. Bolvoka disappears as well? Read the book to find out. ... Read more

It is a very good book, with fierce confict of the hagsfiends and owls, and very detailed. You can picture the scenes, the half-hags in their feathers, everything is very clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Coming of Hoole
In this tenth installment of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series, Soren and Coryn, this time joined by the rest of the Band, open the second of the three Legends of Ga'Hoole and read on. The ancient volume, titled The Coming of Hoole, picks up where The First Collier left off: the hatching of that noble prince, Hoole.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Coming of Hoole
Finally, FINALLY, Kathryn Laskey is getting back on track. The arc of irrelevance and boredom started in The Hatchling and continued all the way through The First Collier. But The Coming of Hoole is interesting and sticks to the original Guardians of Ga'Hoole story without slipping up nearly as much as the past three books.

Editorial Review

In the fifth "epic novel" about the extraordinary CaptainUnderpants--"faster than a speeding waistband... more powerful than boxershorts"--the formidable superhero is under siege by a terrifying new enemy, themerciless bionic-powered Wedgie Woman. Will Captain Underpants overcome his fearof spray starch in time to save the world from the evil schemes of Wedgie Woman? No one knows... except maybe George and Harold, the imaginative fourth-gradetroublemakers (imagination is not allowed at Jerome Horwitz Elementary School),who are also the creative minds behind Captain Underpants and Wedgie Woman. Yousee, it all started (as it usually does) with a comic strip drawn andillustrated by the boys. When their mean teacher Miss Ribble gets her hands onthe comic book, their troubles really begin.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series
Great series for young and old looking for a mental shut-down for bed book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mattimeo! The new champion of Redwall!
Mattimeo is kidnapped by Slagar and his gang along with many other young ones. He is forced to travel to an evil kingdom where he will become a tortured slave forever. But, Mattimeo's father and many other parents are hot on Slagar's trail ready to fight him and any other obstacles that they may encounter.
4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful coming of age story and exciting travels into the southern lands. Not the best in the series, but still recommended
The third book in the Redwall series, Mattimeo is the story of Mattimeo, Matthias the Warrior's son, who is captured by a slaver and taken on a long journey far to the south of Mossflower Woods--a journey that will turn him from a youth into a warrior. Slagar the Cruel, a masked fox, is a slaver determined to bring ruin to Redwall and to the warrior Matthias in particular. When he kidnaps Matthias's son, Mattimeo, along with a number of other youngsters from Redwall, it seems that Slagar will achieve his goal. As he forces the slaves on a long march deep into the barren, dangerous southern lands, Matthias and a band of warriors go to rescue their children. In their absence, the Abbey is attacked, leaving the peaceful abbeydwellers to defend it. The three storylines run concurrently, keeping the action moving. Riddles hidden deep within the Abbey bring aid to the rescuing warriors and reveal long-forgotten knowledge about the Abbey's founders. A coming of age story is combined with exploration, riddles, and battle, making for a meaningful, readable story.

5-0 out of 5 stars The classics in one volume
What can be said about LOTR that a million other reviewers haven't already said? This is the series that essentially created the fantasy genre as it exists today. Many others have imitated it, but LOTR stands above them all. These books were the result of a lifetime's work and it shows. The story is polished beyond the ability of most authors to achieve.Tolkien had to suffer through many bad editors, text changed by typesetters, and reviewers who just didn't get it.He perservered and we all benefit from his decades of effort.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good edition
My dad has had this edition on his desk for many years. I think it is the best all-in-one edition of Tolkien's classic fantasy novel.

Jack and Annie are helping Teddy get all four presents. They're going to Australia to find the last present. They go on all kinds of adventures like helping a little kangaroo get back to its mother. Will Jack and Annie help the little kangaroo find its mother? If you want to know, you'll have to read Dingoes At Dinnertime. I like this book. It's good because I like the Dingoes because they remind me of my dog Paco.

At first my seven year-old son, a devout Captain Underpants fan, was doubtful as to whether or not to get this book. He saw the so-so ratings on Amazon and didn't think he was going to enjoy it. But upon purchasing a used version of the book, he found he loved all the activities included.
