1-0 out of 5 stars Board book is far off from description Amazon uses (hardcover)
I remember liking this book as a child and I thought I could get this book for my daughter. The board book has been so abridged that it lacks a lot of things that I thought were funny.AND what about that "climatic ending" where the apples all topple - Not there! I wouldn't even recognize the wording in the board book as Dr. Suess's.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a great fan of this one, just not really appealing
One of the books which I keep wondering why I don't really like it. But there are lots of small reasons, none of them major but they all add up.

I had the original Beginner book and I read it so much it fell apart and my girls read it only a few times. They loved it as much as I so, I had to replace it. Well worth it. My daughters insist on it every day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful from beginning to end
As a parent, this may very well be my favorite bedtime story.Don't judge the book based on the TV show-- it is much better!Max and Ruby are making birthday cakes for Grandma.Max is making an earthworm cake but Ruby wants to make an angel surprise cake with rasbery fluff frosting.Despite Ruby's increasingly restrictive instructions, Max keeps knocking her ingredients off the table, and Ruby keeps sending him to the store with a shopping list for replacements.Max wants red hot marshmellow squirters to top off his cake, and his attempts to communicate this to the grocer make up the heart of the story.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bunny Cakes
This is an excellent picture book for young children. The story line is simple and easy for kids to connect with. Many children have siblings and can relate to Max and Ruby. The illustrations are heart warming and draw the reader in. Rosemary Wells repitition of events within the plot make her an excellent storyteller. Bunny Cakes is an endearing story.

1-0 out of 5 stars abridged -- in a bad way
As previously mentioned, this does NOT contain all the text or pictures of the original. In and of itself, this is understandable since the original story is long. But the abriged text in particular is really despicable -- it unnecessarily changes the wording; so random and infinitely inferior.

It's tough when the things that stand between you and your desired sugar bowl are a host of deadly mushrooms and an uncomfortable diving suit. The unlucky Baudelaire orphans find themselves in deep (once again) in this eleventh book in Lemony Snicket's odd-and-full-of-woe-but-quite-funny Series of Unfortunate Events. In Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Grim Grotto
Before I tell you about this book and its damp pages I want to advise you that if you don't want you eyes and spirits damped I suggest you just forget about this review and the book that its about and read another, happier book. If you are reading this I guess you decided not to take my advice but that is ok. This book it about three orphans named Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire who are going down a stream and encounter a submarine whose captain is named captain Widdershins. It is about the Baudelaires teaming up with the captain and his stepdaughter Fiona to find the sugar bowl. Although they don't know why it is so important they trust the captain when he said that is cant fall into the wrong hands. This is where the villain, Count Olaf and his girlfriend Esme come in the picture. The Baudelaires are on a mission to find the sugar bowl before it gets into evils hands. They encounter many thing such as a deathly fungus, a mechanical monster, a giant spaghetti, a hope-lifting letter and a long lost family member. Now that you have witnessed some of the woe that this book contains I hope you take my word and just throw it down the drain and forget all about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A not-so-grim tale that will leave you gasping for air (and dry land)
When your last name is Baudelaire, it is a known fact that you will somehow stumble upon trouble, no matter how hard you may try and avoid it. When you're last name is Baudelaire and you're an orphan, stumbling upon trouble increases tenfold. Which is why the Baudelaire orphans (Violet, Klaus, and Sunny) know instantly after they begin floating along the Stricken Stream that trouble is lurking around some vicious corner. However, as they are not dolphins, seals, or fish, they did not expect their next bout of trouble to take place underwater. But, alas, that is exactly where they find themselves on their next dreadful adventure. Having come across a submarine that is filled with three crew members (Captain Widdershins, his step-daughter Fiona, and, lo-and-behold the Baudelaire Orphans old pal, Phil), the Baudelaire's enter the underwater vehicle, and begin their next journey. Within a short while, the three orphans learn that Captain Widdershins is a member of V.F.D., and they quickly realize that he is on their side, willing to help them discover the truth about the fire that took their beloved parents lives. However, when the orphans, along with Fiona (a young mycologist), prepare for a bit of deep-sea diving, they soon find that young Sunny has been infected with Medusoid Mycelium (a deadly fungi). Now, the siblings are searching for a way to save their baby sister from a very certain death, without many supplies. As if that weren't difficult enough for the Baudelaire's to endure, they have just discovered that Count Olaf is now trailing them under the sea, and plans on capturing them, and (you guessed it) claiming their fortune as his own.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Aye!
The Grim Grotto has Violet, Klaus and Sunny aboard a submarine where a crazed Captain is obsessed with finding the sugar bowl before Count Olaf. While Klaus starts getting close to the Captain's stepdaughter Fiona. She's a book a worm too, well when it comes to learning about mushrooms. One of the funnier parts has has her stepfather alreday planning their wedding and having the two blushing. While saying "and Violet can marry my stepson once we find him again, Aye!". The book has it's slow points but it's still one of the best of the books since it has some surprises. Plus when Sunny gets poisoned by a deadly mushroom, Klaus and Violet have to figure out how to cure her and get away from Count Olaf at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Seuss's The Foot Book
I ordered this rhyming book to read to my 11 month old. She likes to look at it by herself also and the pages are sturdy and colorful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Entertaining and a great value
I love this set.The performers are superb, and are clearly having fun with the reading, the text is unabridged, and there is a complete lack of chessy effects or background sound track, with the exception of segway music at the beginning and end of each CD, which I personally find very a very nice prompt to switch CDs. Even the questionable nod to femminism by including Lynn Redgrave as a reader for "Prince Caspian" does not diminish the production or entertainment value one iota. They presented in a different order from the original book series publication, but that was no matter to me: I simply listen to them in the coreect sequence.I am perfectly content to hear how it all began later rather than sooner.

4-0 out of 5 stars What A Wonderful World It Is
The Chronicles of Narnia - the audios were really quite good. They are each done by different actors.Kenneth Branagh, who I know from Harry Potter's Chamber of Secrets, did well with the story telling of the first book "The Magician's Nephew".All the other actors were wonderful as well. But the best, to me, was Patrick Stewart, in "The Last Battle". What a performance. He caught my attention. So very dramatic, very passionate and funny!Overall, I enjoyed it.And to me, it's almost up there with Harry Potter's audio, and Lord of the Rings audio with Ian Holmes, playing the role of Frodo. If you want to buy it go for it!

Editorial Review

"When I was quite young and quite small for my size, I met an old man in the Desert of Drize." The old man looks like a cross between a cartoon granddad and a swami; he sits on top of a cactus, and tells his young listener that the best way to get over any sadness is to imagine all the ways you could be worse off. "Suppose, just suppose, you were poor Herbie Hart, who has taken his Throm-dim-bu-lator apart!"This has a more hurried, formulaic feel than the best Seuss, and it seems to showcase a less acute grasp of child psychology than usual. (Does it really make a child feel better to think of poor Harry Haddow, who, "try as he will, can't make a shadow," or Gucky Gown, "who lives by himself ninety miles out of town"?) But the illustrations alone make this morality tale a minor classic. (Ages 4 to 8) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple genius
The moral of "Did I Ever..." is as much for the adults reading the story as for the kids who're enjoying it as part of a bedtime ritual.Dr. Seuss paints a picture of silly places and people we're lucky we're not, adjusting our point of view to show that we've got it pretty darn good.Probably not a lesson that a 2 year-old will immediately grasp and write a masters thesis on, but a good seed to plant in his mind. And while the deep meanings of life are flying over their heads, the rugrats will enjoy the brilliant Seuss-ian rhymes and illustrations of ridiculous situations (With your bedroom up here... And your bathroom up there!).Definitely a top-ten book for small human people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are
This was, by far, my favorite book growing up.I loved trying to figure out how to say the strange words and eventually, I could almost recite the entire book from memory.I still can the first few pages.I don't know that I was helped psycologically, but it sure was and is a fun book!

5-0 out of 5 stars and you think YOU have it bad...!!
Theodore Seuss Guisel is, of course, one of the best known children's authors today.Though he left us in 1994, his legacy lives on and his books are still produced, bought and loved as much now as anytime in the past. When we think of him, we immediately think of "The Cat in the Hat" or "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", but we can easily forget some of his wonderful, lesser-known works. "When I was quite young and quite small for my size I met an old man in the Desert of Drize..." So begins "Did I Ever Tell You..." where the narrator finds an old man sitting atop a prickly cactus in the middle of the desert. The man tells the boy narrator that whenever HE feels like his life isn't going well, he reminds himself how lucky he really IS.He could be, for example, a construction worker on the impossibly rickety Bunglebung Bridge, where workers are toiling over the water to finish the impossibly crooked structure. Yes, things could be far worse!!You could be a Poogle-Horn Player who has to honk away on your complex, tuba-like Poogle-Horn while descending a flight of stairs... on a two story unicycle, no less!!The absurdness of people less fortunate splash across each page, Seuss-like, as Mr. Bix wakes up at 6 in the morning to find that his Borfin has schlumpped over, or Mr. Potter who has to dot i's and cross t's on endless, miles-long spools of paper!Yes, things could be far worse than they are, Ducky, so count yourself lucky! Published in 1973, "Have I Ever Told You..." is a wonderfully funny book with some subtle messages.Written during a period of time when parents were still forever admonishing their children, "you're so lucky to be able to eat those Brussels sprouts!!Why, there's children starving in Africa..." the book can be seen as a lesson in morality and thankfulness OR as satire of those very parents who encourage children to think of those less fortunate than them when they crank about life's inequities. Satire or morality play, "Have I Ever Told You..." is classical Seuss at his best. The illustrations are properly absurd and colorful, splashing across the page in Seuss's perennial style. There's humans assembling bridges as well as odd creatures getting stuck in 4-way traffic jams. The illustrations are uncluttered and the text is easy to read, making it an excellent choice for beginning to intermediate readers.A wonderfully fun book, and highly recommended!! ... The final legend. That's what To Be A King is. The final legend in the three that Soren, Coryn, the Band, & Otulissa have to read. In this book, they find a world of magic & chaos. Lord Arrin's forces of hagsfiends have split, forming other groups off nachtmagen. Rumors about a group of all hagsfiends led by Lord Arrin's old assassin, Ullryck, have been brought to the attention of the new King Hoole & Grank. They have just recently set up a new order called the Guardians of Ga'Hoole in the enormous tree which has come to be known as the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. There is also another rumor of a mad owl that has taken control of the Ice Palace in the N'yrthghar with his young hagsfiends. Soon, Hoole realizes, the forces of good will clash with the evil forces of nachtmagen. Hoole has the Ember, but to use it could be dangerous. So Hoole must make a choice-use the power of the Ember to restore the Ice Palace to it's former glory, or to let things go on without the strange, mysterious magic that is the Ember of Hoole.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book rocks (asteroids)!
This book is a blast (no pun intended)! Mrs. Frizzle and her class travel to every planet in the solar system. The bus breaks down in the asteroid belt and the students have to find Mrs. Frizzle on a very cold planet. You'll love all the colorful pictures and Arnold's crazy cousin!Blast-off to this book and learn a lot about space in a fun way!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the Solar System
I like this book because it makes me wonder about the solar system and everything happening in it. I love imagining what things are like in other places and this book makes me think but it also taught me stuff about the solar system too. This book makes me want to visit the solar system myself.

Yet more wisdom cast down from high atop Mt. Seuss, this cheerful trio of tales teaches some valuable lessons in humility--thanks to a sharp-eyed worm, a bragging bear and rabbit, a fuzzy-tailed bird, and a couple hundred turtles led by their foolish King Yertle.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing...
I bought this book for my 21 month old as she loves so many of the Dr. Suess books. We didn't even get through the first couple of pages before she was bored with the story and illustrations.Maybe she'll like it better in a few years, but for now it is just sitting on the shelf...

4-0 out of 5 stars A story with a twist
My family have been happy fans of Dr Seuss and we enjoyed this book, it's quite funny because as a adult reading this to your children, you can't help but think that there is a message in the story aimed at the adults !!!! That's the way I saw it anyway !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Satire
Greed. Abuse of Power. The king of the pond will literally step on others to get what he wants. Until a plain little turtle below in the stack, his name is Mac, precipitates change.Great introduction to satire, pokes fun at human shortcoming.Dr. Seuss rhythm and rhyme. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Helping Little Ones (and Their Parents) Grow Sleepy
I used this book a lot when my own kids were small. It would usually have me yawning within the first couple of pages. It is highly suggestive and has a hypnotic effect on both the reader and the listener.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get This Seuss!
If you only get one Dr. Seuss book to read to your child, get this one! Not only has it been helping get children to sleep for generations, it is does not have the tongue-twisting rhymes that make some of his books a challenge to read aloud. Instead, The Sleep Book puts both parent and child into the mood to sleep, peacefully dreaming of Dr. Suess creatures who are also going to sleep, so how about you?

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Dr. Seuss Book Ever!! By Laura G.
Some people say that this book was too long, while others said that The Cat in the Hat is better.I love this book.It was my mother's favorite as a child and she shared it with me and I'm so glad she did.I love all the characters. You can't read this book and not want to fall asleep...all the yawning in this book makes it a perfect bedtime story. An all time Seuss classic that shouldn't be overlooked!!!!!A must have for any Seuss collector!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read Aloud for Toddlers/Kinders and A Great Reading for Young Children
I first learned about this book while teaching second grade. It was one of our chapter books for group reading. My second grade students couldn't get enough of this wonderful classic and enjoyed reading it each day. They also voted it as the favorite chapter book that they read all year. Now as a parent I purchased it as a read aloud bedtime story for my three year old that has developed a love of dragons. It is a timeless story full of adventure and imagination! The chapters are short, making it a great bedtime story to be read over multiple nights.A must for every family library!Parents will enjoy it as well as children. It is a story that once you finish your child will ask, "Can we read it again?"

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful, imaginative
My five-year-old son loves this book. The first time, I read it out loud to him and his sister. He has read it alone several times since then.I think the writing is right on his level - he has tackled tougher books but not gone back to them like this one - and it is long enough that he doesn't finish it in fifteen minutes. The story sounds to me just like something a kid would think of - for example, how Elmer crossed the river full of crocodiles.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I absolutely this book.It is about a young boy, Elmer Elevator, and a dragon, Boris, who go on a lot of adventures.I read it five years ago, when I was seven, and it is great for kids ages 7-10 to read alone.Younger kids would enjoy it too if someone read it out loud to them.Makes a great b-day or Christmas present!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My children are enchanted, amused and QUIET!
I purchased this CD prior to a family roadtrip last spring, having no prior exposure to Arnold Lobel, or Frog & Toad. My 6-year old son and 4-year old daughter were quick converts. They easily follow the stories, laugh at the absurdities of the characters' sweet friendship. They constantly requested it to be played in the car whenever we were out and about. Since then, we have also purchased "Mouse Tales" on CD, which they also adore. Intelligent, engaging, & fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Include Read-Along Book
Because this item did not come with a companion book, it does not suit my family's needs. This is most disappointing. For the price, it should include a companion book.

Editorial Review

Frog and Toad agreed: it was a perfect day for a swim. And Frog was kind enough not to look at Toad in his bathing suit, per Toad's request. But when the swimming was over, a crowd had gathered to see Toad in his funny-looking suit, and neither Frog nor Toad could make them leave. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the beginning of a beautiful friendship.....
this book came out in 1970......it truly showed me what a really great childrens book should be.......the five stories are about friendship as it should be in real life but it's not......this will truly enlighten anyone who reads it...adult or child.......

4-0 out of 5 stars Endearing
This is a very sweet book. Some of the stories seem to not have point at the end, but that's probably because I'm looking at them from an adult female point of view.Other stories are endearing.A sweet, sweet book that teaches what it is to be a good friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars The simple but true-to-human-life stories and the drawings are a delight.
It's so wonderful to have a book that a very young child can read himself, and then ask the adult, or other reader, with whom he is sitting, for help with difficult words. When I was a kid, 65 years ago, we only read the simplest of books, with no real relationships, because we were expected to read them without help. Frog and Toad have it all over Dick and Jane!
