5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginers book
As a mother just begining to teach the "birds and the bees" this is a terrific help. The material is age appropriate and interesting to read. The best part, however, is the Christian aspect.I know that our children will understand and respect their sexuality more because they will know why God gave them this gift and the value of protecting that gift. Thank you for the Learning About Sex Series!

1-0 out of 5 stars Innacurate, under-researched, stereotypical, and misinformed!
Hyde and Forsyth try very hard to present an even and unbiased view on teenagers and sex, but unfortunately seem unable to report the facts without coming across very heavy handed. It is clear that these women both feel that teenagers should not be having sex at all, and they perpetuate gender stereotypes in regards to teenagers and sexual activity. They present several different scenarios of girls being pressured into sex, sexually abused, or damaged in some way physically and emotionally due to a sexual encounter, whereas the boys in each scenario escape relatively unscathed. And while the authors clearly do not support abstinence only education, and do encourage teens to talk to an adult to learn about safe sex, they use a book full of scare tactics to encourage teens to avoid all sexual activity. There is not one example, in a book full of possible scenarios, of a loving young couple enjoying safe sex (of any type) without consequence. The authors never impart their own judgment in their own words, but we see scenario after scenario of young women feeling "guilty and ashamed" (page 55) of themselves because of their sexual encounters and the consequences.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book for a simple introduction to reproduction
This is a good book for a very beginning introduction to reproduction for young children. It will definitely need to be supplemented with more detailed text and diagrams, but it's an easy place to start when you don't want to go into too much detail for a first talk.It starts out with bees and plants and moves to ducks, cats, and then humans. It uses the terms "sperm" and "eggs" but does not use any male or female anatomical terms (other than "womb") or show any diagrams of anatomy except for a superimposed drawing of a baby inside the uterus of a fully clothed woman. There is also a photo of kittens being born. That's as specific as this book gets.A good place to start for a child of about 4.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good ice breaker
I was looking for answers to that exact question from my 4 year old and the book covers how a baby starts with a sperm and an egg. It started out great explaining how a bee carries pollen on it's legs from flower to flower creating a seed, but then the explaination becomes vague as it gets into the animals and humans and how the male sperm and the female egg get together to create a baby. The problem is that it answers the question where, but leaves the child with the question of How. It's honest and written to a 4 year old level with terminology that works well. I think it will help you break into a discussion of how that sperm gets to the egg. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good bookfor Parents and Preteens
Joanna Cole gives straight answers for preteens' questions concerning sex.Parents and child should read the chapters together. The book will open lines of communications on this very important subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars Could it get any worse!?d
This was a pretty dumb book I already knew all of this stuff!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best choice.
I bought this, along with several similar books, for my 11 year-old son.The Q&A format of this book made it easy to read, but many topics were handled in a clinical, vague manner and spent way too much time on trivial subjects (e.g., a whole chapter on "Crushes.") I actually checked the copyright, to see if it was written in the '50's. (It's 1988.) I was very troubled by the section, "What Happens if a Young Girl Gets Pregnant?"It ignored the boy's role & responsibility, and glossed over the topic with vague statements such as: "Her whole life will change, and not usually for the better."And, "She may feel upset for a long time afterward." There's even a section, "Why Would a Girl Let Herself Get Pregnant?" which suggests "Sometimes a girl secretly wants to get pregnant..."The section ends with: "The surest way to prevent pregnancy is not to have intercourse."I found a much better book for my son: "What's Going on Down There."Silly title, but much more thorough, balanced and practical. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best book out there on the subject
When it comes to the subject of sex, every book out there thats Christian (or sort of Christian, like this one is), typically tells us kids to "Just Don't Do It,' or 'Stop!' or Wait." The first message is always a negative message--NO. What's cool about this book is that it starts out with a postive message, that sex is a good thing. We don't hear that a lot today. Also, the book is pretty funny--like, it starts out talking about how we live in such a sex-saturated society, and what if something out there was talked about as much as sex, something random, like cheesecake. So it's all like the Joy of Cheesecake, or Cheesecakes gone wild, or the 40-year-old cheesecake, or whatever. That's a good point the author makes, becuase it's like, give me a break. Everywhere you go, people are always talking about sex. So this is a good book. It just lets you figure out stuff for yourself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Series for Teenagers!
I have a teenage daughter and this book was perfect for her.I read through it first before giving it to her and I really liked how the author talks directly to the teen.He talks their language and offers hard facts but keeps the book Christ-centered.I think teens still have a tendency to have short spans of attention and the variety of each page keeps them interested and allows the information to sink in.Congratulations to the publisher and the author, Marcus Brotherton, for presenting teens and youth workers with a new way of looking at tough subjects.I look forward to ordering the rest of the FlipSwitch series books.

5-0 out of 5 stars get this for your teen or youth ministry
Put this book in the hand of teens who wrestle with the hyped-up message that sex is casual, means nothing, and there are no consequences. It's truthful, right where a teen lives, and it's easy to read in one setting. In fact, when you start reading you just keep on going because it's that real. Thanks for making a product that actually matters.

5-0 out of 5 stars The history of lies and deceit
Teaching Sex begins with the "invention of the adolescent" by G. Stanley Hall with the publication of his two-volume book in 1904.Jeffrey P. Moran covers the war between the many factions in the "sexual revolution" and the on-going struggle to educate children about sex.And to indoctrinate the child in "proper sexual conduct," as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Both sides hate it.. bravo!
If there's any more tiresome or useless squabble than America's endless war between advocates of abstinence and sex education, I can't imagine it. If this isn't depressing enough, Moran shows us today's moralist-vs-programmer quarrel is exactly the same that's been going on since 1910. Moran's history is great, but his last chapter is priceless for its laceration of both sides for their destructive obsession with what is a trivial argument--what we ludicrously call "teenage sex" is really a reflection of adult sexual behaviors, sex with adults, and socioeconomic status school teachings cannot erase. Schools: set the bowl of condoms next to the pet-your-dog-not-your-date chastity brochures and understand that the kids already know this "mixed message" accurately sums up America's sadly confused adult attitudes toward sex. Moran delineates this confusion brilliantly, and it's a sign of our stultified moralistic climate that his plague-on-both-your-houses treatise isn't a best seller and ticket to talk-show stardom.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource
Jeffery Moran has done an excellent job of charting the history of sex education in America with particular attention to 19th and early 20th century cultural barriers to frank discussion. His research was clearly exhaustive and I found the first two-thirds of the book to be worthwhile but wordy. The real gem of Moran's work is the last third of the book which deals with the 1950s to the present day.It is very easy to chart our contemporary situation and approach to this topic by reading the history of the last few decades in particular.Presenting the arguments of the pro and con sex education elements was very enlightening considering the ways in which the same arguments have been recycled again and again. Most revelatory was the numerous evidence Moran presents showing that sex education in its current form neither increases or decreases age at first sexual experience or other risk behaviors unless the individual student in particularly future oriented.A very worthwhile book and important for educators and parents. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Does NOT put ideas into kids heads!!!
I just have to say to the below poster....WAKE UP!!! Learning how to put a condom on at age 14 is not going to make you go out and have sex! Believe it or not, there are 12 years olds out there who are sexually active! How can educating kids about the real world be a bad thing? I had sex ed when I was 14, and learned how to use a condom properly. Did it make me go out and have sex? No! Did I have parents who talked to me about sex? Nope. Whether or not there is sex ed in schools, kids are going to think about sex, we need to atleast give them the correct information. Reading this book is not going to put ideas into a teenagers head that arent already there, and niether is sex ed class.

1-0 out of 5 stars negative stars
this book is what's wrong withour youth. the fact that I was embarassed last summer at work because i was a virgin is beyond me. this book says to teenagers "look, forget about love it's about sex!" i cannot beleive my school had a sex education class... IN 9th GRADE! i hope it' s not too late for parents to look at what their children are doing to themselves. Sex is of constant talk in the teenage youth and the pressure is far beyond what most parents are in denial about. The rap music thats so popular isnt making it much better, either. Ever listen to what your teen listens to? the lyrics? Ever watch MTV with them? Would you watch MTV with them? Look at the "role models" of our younger society (50 cent, britney spears, etc). i can't believe people bought this book for their teens. if i were a parent i would not make the same mistake mine did by allowing a school to teach me at age 14 how to put condoms on. the far less you know, the most likely you'll be able to stay away with it! and please, start putting good music into your teen's heads!!

Joanna Cole (I Am a Big Brother, I Am a Big Sister) has created yet another great book for sharing with young children.Directly addressing toddlers and preschool age children, Cole tells about pregnancy and childbirth.Using terms such as uterus, umbilical cord, and breast, and with illustrations of a child inside the womb, Cole and Chambliss have created a wonderful book for parents to share with very, young children, especially when a new baby is expected.Additional information on answering children's questions about birth is provided at the back of the book. ... Adding to her reputation as an objective, compassionate sexual health educator, Kim's new book provides parents and teens with a very comprehensive overview of the awakenings of sexual experience. She covers virtually every subject imaginable with humor and frank explanations, using her trademark style of communication that is free of judgement and moral inferences. The book is richly illustrated, and also includes hilarious cartoons. I would highly recommended this book to teens, parents and educators. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars should be curricular material!
My children are adopted, and they feel so completely disjointed when sex ed comes up in school. This book covers not only sexual intercourse but also in-vitro fertilization, which is so often overlooked. This book also covers ADOPTION, thank goodness. It is written from the perspective of, how do families come into being? It addresses each way this can happen. It is neither condescending nor promoting nontraditional means - it just acknowledges that there ARE nontraditional means.I was so very happy to come across this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The joy of teaching your kids about sex
Under normal circumstances I am an extraordinarily poised and respectable person.I do not chew with my mouth open.I do not pick my nose in public. And if someone says "bless you" when I sneeze I offer the obligatory "thank you" in response. All that went out the window the minute I saw the cover for "Where Willy Went".I stared. Then I screwed up my eyes and tried as hard as I possibly could to make sense of the image.A pollywog in goggles?A flagellum in some kind of a race?My eyes trailed downwards to the byline, "The big story of a little sperm" and I let out a truly unladylike guffaw right there in the middle of the bookstore.Oh, that is rich, I thought. That is an example of a book that just does not care if ban-crazy parents like it or hate it.It's doing its own thing and devil take the hindmost. You have to respect its plucky can-do attitude.Whether you appreciate its writing is another story.
4-0 out of 5 stars Four stars with a "but..."
Where Willy Went is recommended and formatted for ages 4-8 but seems much better suited to pre-teens - perhaps 8-12.
5-0 out of 5 stars Funny stuff about sex
Willy Brown's a sperm. Yes, a sperm. One of 300 million, in fact, though he has trouble counting that high. That's okay, all he needs is one talent: to wag his microscopic tail faster than his rivals. There's a chuckle a page in this frank - but not graphic - first book about sex.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I purchased this book for my three sons and was very impressed with it.It covered EVERYTHING!The information is explained in a manner that is easy to understand.Having sons I wanted them to understand not only what was happenning to their bodies but to the girls as well. This book is great!I loved it so much I purchased it for several other children too.I work at a bookstore and recommend it to parents who are looking for "facts of life" reference books for their children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Teaching Tool
This book helps children understand the facts of life as well as how their bodies change as they go through puberty. The pictures are drawn very realistically. There is a good mixture of text and pictures which helphold a child's attention. Unlike other books on this subject, this one isless embarassing and encourages parent-child discussions. Both my childrenhave used this book until the book has become nearly worn out.I give itas a gift to other parents whose children are entering puberty. ... Read more
