Editorial Review

Marion Dane Bauer--a Newbery Honor author and part-time breeder of puppies and kittens--captures the wonder of birth in this poetic, playful picture book about how animals come into being. Each oversized, double-page spread lovingly depicts 12 different types of animal babies, including a human, with a few simple lines such as, "If you were a baby seahorse, you'd pop out of your father's pouch and swim away with hundreds of sisters and brothers." Bauer's tender tone, gracefully infused with intriguing animal facts, makes this an unusual homage to the miracle of life. JoEllen McAllister Stammen's magical, soft pastel illustrations beautifully complement each birth story and pay tribute to the special bond between parents and their babies. Young children will love hearing about how other little ones are born, making this winning book a wonderful, sleepy, educational bedtime read. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations and text
Wonderful for young children, letting them see other babies in the animal kingdom. Beautiful illustrations also!

5-0 out of 5 stars The wonder of nature
This book should appeal to many age levels. My 18 month old begs for it over and over again. The illustrations are beautiful- soft and detailed with the animals filling up the whole page. The text is one or two sentences per page and he knows the names of the animals. For the older child the facts about each animal provide an introduction to the fascinating diversity of the natural world and a reference point leading to a discussion of his or her own birth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book!
I read this beautifully illustrated book to my four-year-old son many times throughout my pregancy. The fact that he was born himself, just like the animals, pleased him immensely.I enjoyed reading it over and over because of the simple, charming words the author uses to describe birth. The whale mother nudges the baby whale up for its "first sip of air."The baby elephant wears "a halo of long, brown hair." And the human baby "rode curled beneath (its) mother's heart."What a wonderful, sweet way to explain the miracle of life to young children. It is also a great way to explain the different ways some animals are born.Daddy Seahorses give birth? Frogs have babies that don't look like them? It could lead to yet another trip to the library!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I read this book myself at age 11
My mother gave this book to me when I was 11 years old. Unfortunately, I think a more appropriate age would've been 9 or 10, before my perceptions of sex were influenced by peers. My own daughter is 8 years old, and I intend to share this book with her now. While some reviewers complain about the lack of content, as an 11 year old child I felt it provided ample information. My mother always kept an "open door policy" when it came to discussing sex, so additional questions I had were answered by her. That is how it should be. The book should be used as a tool to introduce sex, not a concise encyclopedia of sex and morality. I'm buying several copies, by the way, to share with my friends who also have children expressing curiosity about sex. And I hope the book is as helpful to my daughter as it was to me all those years ago.

At www.goaskalice.columbia.edu, there is one of the best sources for advice on sex, relationships, and health for people ages 14 and up. This book is the print version.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent factual information
This book fills a definite need for adolescents. It presents the facts, not fallacy, to all of the questions they have that parents and other caregivers may be too embarrassed to talk about. It is from an extremely reputable source (Columbia University), and is readable and accessible to the average teen. Kudos to the people who put together "The Go Ask Alice Book of Answers".

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful!
I hated this book. Its directed at teenagers and it made losing your virginity out to be all fun and games with no emotional or physical hangups.Losing your virginity should be considered a serious and life altering thing. Most people including teens don't see it that way which is why I believe that most teen relationships end badly.Books like this thatenforce that attitude just do more damage in my opinion.I believe that later in life, most people will regret losing their virginity somewhat if it was not lost to the right person. And how many teenagers have really found the right person?? Not many.Sex is a serious thing,it is not all pleasure and orgasms. It can carry consequences that can haunt you for the rest of your life such as unwanted pregnancy, abortion, stds. And the end of a first sexual relationship can be crushing.I know from experience. When I have a daughter and she reaches puberty, she will not be reading this book.I will find a much better book for her to read.4-0 out of 5 stars A Quick Read and Telling Content
I greatly enjoyed Bouris' book, The First Time. While not an in-depth, sociological analysis of the concept of virginity, _The First Time_ instead focuses on the real experience of women as told in their own words.Bouris does occasionally draw themes between stories and often brings in various feminist and gay perspectives of sexuality which enlighten the discourse.I think this book would be extremely helpful to parents or young women as we can always learn from other people's mistakes (particularly from the women who mention a lack of facts and values from their parents or guardians). This book would be an excellent read when combined with _The Sex Lives of Teenagers_ by Lynn Ponton.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I think this book is appropriate for children ages 4-8 and maybe even older, depending on their maturity (or lack thereof). If you are generally open and honest with your children and usually explain things to them in ano nonsense, matter of fact way -- this book will assist you with the"tough" questions. It VERY briefly covers the whole"sex" thing -- but explains it in simple terms that children willaccept easily -- without shock or embarassment. The pictures are NOT toographic, in my opinion.Great book!Very useful and really very sweet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not appropriate for toddlers
The comment states that this book is for 4 to 8 year old children.Thisbook is not appropriate for toddlers. I would even hesitate to show thisbook to an eight year old child.I think that for child that is 10 orolder, it would be appropriate. The material (reading and pictures) ismuch to graphic for a four year old child. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a Book!
I gave this book to my 11 year old daughter, she took off with it and I never saw it again. She told me she was reading it and that it was "really good".I wouldn't know...I haven't seen what's between the covers!Based on my daughter's reaction, I would recommend this to all parents of girls. If your daughter is like mine and the slightest HINT of the "visiting friend" comes up in conversation, she runs screaming. With this little volume, she can lock herself in her room and get all her questions answered.A must-have.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much?
After actually looking at the book I found it to be informative in the subject matter to do with menstration, I thought some things took it over the line (examining self with mirror),Maybe I am wrong,But.............You decide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, straightforward information made interesting.
This is a great follow-up book to "The Care and Keeping of You" (in the American Girl series). This book touches on all of the same subjects, such as hygene, periods, puberty, etc., but goes a little more in depth. While it does not address sex directly, it does address the topic where necessary and in a scientific, practical way.It is a good "bridge" book for you and your daughter. This book will help your daughter understand herself before she gets into the more adult topics of sex and romantic love. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Family psychologist Dr. Kevin Leman and sexuality educator Kathy Flores Bell present A Chicken's Guide To Talking Turkey With Your Kids About Sex, a straightforward guide for parents and educators about teaching young people about the first period, first nocturnal emission, dating relationships, STDs, molestation, and much more. A Chicken's Guide To Talking Turkey With Your Kids About Sex offers useful advice in down-to-earth terms concerning what needs to be taught, how to build a bond of trust and support, and how to sound fully credible when promoting abstinence in a culture that is media-soaked with sexual imagery, as well as more basic tips concerning trials of puberty such as proper hair and skin care, oral hygiene, and more. Highly recommended.
4-0 out of 5 stars Putting puberty education back where it belongs: the home
I have found Dr. Leman's books on childrearing very useful. Here he teams up with Kathy Bell to help parents build strong relationships with their "tweenagers" so they can effectivly pass on their own values. I especially like the straight talk to parents who fear being hypocrites because they misused their sexuality, and now want to tell their kids "don't do that!"Read more

A great book for reading with your child or to leave them with.I read this cover to cover and feel it describes things very well at a pre teenage understanding. It covers a great deal in a sensitive way, from sex to relationships to dieases, but also covers family set ups and different parenting, i.e gay or adoption.A very extensive book that could be re read and refered to thoughout early teens.I would suggest over 10's but obviously the book needs to be shown to a child when the parent feels it is appropriate. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, thorough, well-illustrated.Highly recommended.
This book looked too advanced for my 10 year old (maybe it isn't) but I read it with my 13 year old son.The lay-out and illustrations make this a good choice for younger teens, colorful pictures and small subject-boxes for related topics on each page make it interesting to look at, unlike the straight text of books intended for older teens. This book kept my ADHD son's attention very well, sparked questions for discussion, and offered all of the information (and more) that he was looking for.We were able to discuss embarrassing subjects objectively and discreetly with this book. The game-plan is to use "What's going on down there" as the next step, but this was a good starting point for my son. This book will be kept on hand for use with my younger children when they are old enough for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My "Bible" for adolescence
My mom presented me with this book when I was about 9 years old, and I've used it for reference all though my middle school years. Almost everything that I could have possibly needed to know was in this book, and the information was presented in a frank, honest tone without being too clinical or demeaning. What was most helpful was the female anatomical section, which was extraordinary in allowing me to understand and properly identify what exactly was going on inside me. 5-0 out of 5 stars Useful & Readable
I needed a book that my nine-year-old daughter and I could use together as she enters adolescence: not too complicated, not too simple, but clear andhonest in ways with which we both were comfortable.I read six othersimilar books before choosing Growing Up, which was the best by far.Itdoes just what we needed it to do without getting past her level ofmaturity and readiness. The illustrations and explanations are easy tounderstand.Every issue I wanted to address is covered in this book.Mydaughter loves it and so do I.I commend it to other parents. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Reproduction for young "biologists"
If your children, like most, are fascinated by animal behavior, this is a great way to approach reproduction.Topics include: Asexual Reproduction, Sexual Reproduction in Plants, Fertilization in Animals, Internal Fertilization, Development of Young Outside the Body, Attraction & Courtship, Competition, Gestation, Sexual Maturity, Diversity, Building a Home and Social Organization. The narration then moves to: Human Reproduction, Competition, Courtship, Love & Marriage, Building a Home, The Family and Society. The illustrations of the plants & animals in the first 3/4 of the book are wonderful--everything from anemone, grasshoppers and frogs to peacocks, giraffes and elephants. The illustrations of humans are disappointing and not nearly as good in quality as those of the animals. While all human male organs are labelled correctly and with detail in the diagrams, the clitoris is omitted! There was also a missed opportunity in that it would have been ideal to juxtapose an illustration of a variety of Human body types, skin tones and developmental stages along with the illustration of a variety of cats in the "Diversity" section. The book does get credit for its emphasis on the fact that mammals are intended to grow on their mother's milk.Note that this book does NOT describe the process of birth beyond briefly touching on length of gestation for a zebra and two illustrations of a zebra in utero and a recently born zebra foal.A similar title appropriate for a slightly younger crowd (and giving more information on the actual process of birth) is "How Babies Are Made" by Andrew Andry.Overall, this is a great little book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information - more for school-age not preschool
The book has lots of information about reproduction in plants, animals, and humans. The section on human love, marriage, home and families was very nicely done. However, even though the text and pictures concerning plant and animal reproduction were very good, I found the section on humanreproduction to be too graphic for very young children i.e preschoolers.
