5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Beast
I am a unicorn nut, and when I was young someone gave me a copy of this book (back then it was hardcover and had a very different picture on the cover). The stories in this volume have been with me ever since. There is such a variety of wonderful, magical unicorn tales in this book, and each one is a treasure.I can't recommend this book enough.Buy two, one to keep and one to love, because the paperback won't last like my hardcover copy has.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
These stories about what are possibly the world's most illusive and mysterious creatures were intense and powerful. Full of the magic implicit the the word unicorn, they swept me up and carried me to a different land.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Treasury of Unicorn Stories/Poems
Filled with stories and poems by some of the leading fantasy/science fiction writers, THE UNICORN TREASURY is an absolute gem. Within the pages you will find the following: Bruce Coville (The Lore of the Unicorn, Homeward Bound - both short stories/essays), Megan Lindholm (The Unicorn in the Maze - short story/essay), William Jay Smith (Unicorn - poem), Margaret Greaves (A Net to Catch the Wind - short story/essay), Myra Cohn Livingston (Riddle - poem), Madeleine L'Engle (The Valley of the Unicorns - excerpt from A Swiftly Tilting Planet), Beatrice Farrington (Ragged John - poem), E.V. Rieu (The Paint Box - poem), Jane Yolen (The Transfigured Hart - excerpt from The Transfigured Hart, and The Boy Who Drew Unicorns - short story/essay), Ella Young (The Unicorn - poem), Ardath Mayhar (The Snow White Pony - short story/essay), C.S. Lewis (What News the Eagle Brought - excerpt from The Last Battle), Nicholas Stuart Gray (Unicorn - poem), Patricia C. Wrede (The Princess, the Cat, and the Unicorn - short story/essay), Shirley Rousseau Murphy (Starhorn - poem), Jennifer Roberson (The Court of the Summer King - short story/essay), and Audrey Alexandra Brown (The Strangers - poem).

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was excellent August 9, 2005
I borrowed this book from my cousin's friend when I was ten years old in the fourth grade. Most of the stories was good, but I don't recommend this book to young readers. My favorite story is Bloody Mary. Because of that story, I couldn't sleep. I thought she was going to jump out the mirroir at midnight and kill me, and I start seeing her. Or it was my imagination. I know it wasn't. I do recommend this book for readers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some Scary Stories
Richard and Judy Young, professional storytellers based at Silver Dollar City, Mo., collected the favorite scary stories of American children. The authors admonish tellers to tell these stories responsibly in the introduction.
2-0 out of 5 stars Why don't these books take their audience seriously?
Stories of fright are designed specifically to re-engineer a classic theme in such a way as to leave the reader laden in asubstaintial residue of unsavory - yet all too realistic - possibilities. The stories contained in this book fall so far short of said uneasiness that they seem to only encourage the already painful onslaught of boring children.Let us take our children seriously and follow through with a collection of scary stories that actually fulfills its promise of restless dreams. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just Joking
This must have been one of the funniest books I've ever read. It has different stories about Andy Griffiths when he was a kid. All stories are about Andy playing practical jokes on his parents, his friends, and total strangers. You won't know what's funny until you've read Just Joking. It is extremely hilarious. One of the main reasons I liked this book is how fast it is. There wasn't a part in the book where I was bored. Andy Griffiths sure knows how to keep the reader just wanting to keep on reading. Just Joking is also a very easy book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book rocks!!
This book is intresting and funny.I would simply describe it as hilarious.I've read most of the "Just" books and all of the "butt" books.I recommend this book for kids of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Matthew's review
I liked Just Joking because it was very, very funny. It's a whole bunch of very, very silly stories. He plays very good pranks on people, only most times he gets in trouble. One of the funny parts was when he wanted a milkshake, he wanted a chocolate milkshake, but instead of chocolate syrup, they used slugs! If you like practical jokes, this would be a completely excellent book for you.I would totally recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is an EXCELLENT BOOK!!!
Why all the minimal ratings here??? I was OVERJOYED to find this wonderful collection of McCloskey's works!!! I grew up in New England, so the images and stories of Mcloskey are very close to my heart-and this edition is something I'm proud to have as part of my library. It was the only one I personally found that included Make Way For Ducklings, Lentil, Blueberries For Sal, One Morning in Maine, Burt Dow, Deep Water Man and my personal favorite, "Time of Wonder" (All of these stories are complete as well as Doghnuts from Homer Price and Ever So Much More from The Canterburg Tales) I remembered the imagery so vividly from Time of Wonder but could not remember the title until I found this book-so I was thrilled to unearth this treasure! This book is printed on beautiful coffee-table/art book quality pages with a wonderful introduction, a great epilogue about the life of Robert McCloskey, real photos, as well as early sketches that would later influence his stories. The publishers for this edition did make a choice to transfer what would have printed on 2 pages in the indidividual childrens books to 1 page in this edition. Unlike a previous review, I don't believe that the images or type are too "crammed" but commend the publishers for being able to deliver all of Robert McCloskey's most well known stories PLUS lesser known treasures all in ONE VOLUME FOR A VERY REASONABLE PRICE. Of Course, you can find individual paperback copies of his more popular stories like One Morning in Maine and Blueberries For Sal-but (at least to my knowledge) your going to be pressed to find something this comprehensive in a hardback edition you can be proud to have on your library shelf for life!!! Make no mistake...This is a FANTASTIC EDITION YOU CAN TREASURE FOREVER FOLKS!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic!
Everyone should have a copy of this in their children's library.Beautiful, classic stories.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
The item description for this book is misleading.Even the book cover is misleading--it does NOT contain 8 complete stories. It contains 6 complete stories and one chapter each from Homer Price and Centerburg tales... so much for all of McCloskey's previously published works. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for every family/teacher
I read this book to my children who with a variety of personality types, each learned about how to handle themselves in situations where they felt overwhelmed or enraged. It helped them to see that there is a middle ground and to learn how to find their "me" assertive selves; being able to stand up for yourself, but not be aggressive. I have now passed this book on to my grandaughter who is on the timid side. I am trying to buy it for my nephew who has anger issues, but it is now very expensive. The publisher needs to reprint this valuable resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for elementary school kids!
I am a psychologist in an elementary school, and this book is one of my students'favorite tools. They really relate to the 'mouse' and 'monster' analogies, and they learn to identify those types of behavior in themselvesand others. It's a great resource for parents and professionals to usewith kids. The activities and discussions are perfect for families orguidance groups! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Get the sequel first
These stories are cute and fun to read, and my son and I both enjoyed them. But we wound up not reading it nearly as many times as we did the sequel (Three More Stories You Can Read To Your Dog). That book is much better, with more imaginative stories and funnier pictures.I would recommend buying this only if you have already read and loved the second book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
My son who is 8 likes to read but as parents we don't always have time or make enough time to listen to him read.We do set aside 30 minutes a night for reading. This is a perfect change. He get's to read aloud and doesn't need me or my husband there! The dog is perfect.I can't think of anything better.I was thrilled to learn that there are more books like this.As a cat owner too, I am thrilled to start on those too! This is just perfect! This is an amazing tool in reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Come to My Tea Party:Fun and Friendship for Young Ladies
I am absolutely delighted with this book - it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. My granddaughter is having a tea for her fifth birthday party, and I wanted to get her a book on tea parties to make it more fun for her.I'm not sure how I chose this book, but I am so happy with the choice. It is about a little girl named Colleen who goes to Miss Sandy's Tearoom for a very special birthday surprise. She is given a tea set, three stuffed animals and suggestions on how to have tea parties with her friends to make them feel very special. There are food and project suggestions, as well as reference to some Bible verses. The illustrations combine with the stories to make a very beautiful book.I've decided to keep this book at my house to read to my granddaughters when they are with me so I can enjoy it with them. ... "Shattered: Stories of Children and War," edited by Jennifer Armstrong, is an anthology of 12 stories that deal with a common theme. To give a sense of the book, here are some brief introductions to some of the stories."Shattered," by Marilyn Singer, shows how a brother and sister deal with the legacy of their father's Vietnam War service."Bad Day for Baseball," by Graham Salisbury, looks at the experiences of a Japanese-American boy on the day Pearl Harbor is attacked."I'll See You When This War is Over," by M.E. Kerr, is about a Quaker family during World War II."Faizabad Harvest, 1980," by Suzanne Fisher Staples, follows the experiences of an Afghan family during the conflict between the mujahideen and invading Soviet forces; this is a particularly horrific portrait of war's impact upon a family and a community.

5-0 out of 5 stars a really good book
I remember first reading this book when I was 7 years old. This girl felicity really annoyed priscilla and then stole her stuff while pretending to be her friend and priscilla finds a way to confront her without tattletaling or fighting back which can be pretty inspiring. Felicity was mostly jealous of her throughout the book like when she got new shoes and everyone loved them, when priscilla won the sports festival at her school and almost ruining her birthday party by being such a brat. But through it all priscilla kept her cool in a way I never would have been able to in my day, and basically knowing that two wrongs don't make a right.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Review on Best Enemies
It is about a girl named Priscilla Robin. She is eight years old and is very excited to go to school. It was her first day and she couldn't wait to find out if her friends were going to be in her class. She meets a new girl whose name is Felicity Doll. She is very mean becuse she takes Priscilla's desk, then her pencil case, her lunchbox, and ever her sweater! When she tells her parents about it, her sister, Eve, gets mad and wants to have a word with Felicity. Priscilla wants to take care of it herself. This book is really good and should be read by everyone. It is funny and exciting at the same time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best Enemies Considered
I give the book Best Enemies by Kathleen Leverich three stars because it's a great book. It's about two girls who meet one the first day of school and become enemies right away. One of the girls is Felicity Doll. Felicity is a snake and does some pretty mean things to Pricilla, who is the other girl. In the book Priscilla says she hates Felicity, but, I wasn't so sure about that. Felicity had taken Priscilla's desk, pencil case, and even her new sweater. Priscilla's sister Eve had warned her about Felicity Doll and told her to stay away from her. Instead, of listening to her sister. Priscilla, well...... read the book because I have said too much already. Hope you enjoy reading his book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rediscovering an old friend
My copy was inscribed to me when I was six, in between Dr. Seuss and the Phantom Tollbooth. Looking at it again now, I marvel that it was only eight stories. Bits of them have stuck in my mind ever since: the necklace of raindrops, each with a special power, the girl who had to be washed with her dress on and hung out on the line to dry so it wouldn't shrink past her, the train station in the desert, the cat who ate the yeast, the quilt and the camels and the traffic lights from Beirut. Get a copy and wear it out, then read Joan Aiken's other marvelous books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fanciful Stories
I am thrilled to see this book back in print after so many years. I read it when I was a kid and even after 3 decades I still remember the story of the girl who gets a magic necklace of raindrops and the story of the cat and his wishing mat made out of a gray dress. The new illustrations are nice and I like the fact that it is in hardback, because it will last longer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Irresistable
A grandmother plays a practical joke while sitting with the dead. A farm girl tastes her future at the 1904 World's Fair. A "purr-fect" mastermind bests bullies. Ghosts tell us their secrets. People are frequently (and shockingly) not who you believe them to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Richard Peck Winner!
I am pretty much at the place where I just do not think this man is capable of writing a dud for young adults. This one is fascinating, not only because each story stands on its own as a small gem, but because of the invaluable insights he gives to the young person who wants to write. His accounts of how his stories and novels came to be, of how hard work and persistence paid off, just ring so true, and he has a voice that somehow makes a young adult want to listen--as attested by my own three children.
