4-0 out of 5 stars Memory lane
If you are a baby boomer who learned to read with Dick, Jane and Spot you might enjoy teaching your grandchildren to read with this new edition of those wonderful old readers you used put together in a snappy yellow binding.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Learn to Read Method
I am not a Phd, nor ateacher of children. However, I am a professor of Radiology at a major medical school, an MD. I was taught to read using the phonics method and Dick and Jane books at age 3 by my mother, a teacher, and was easily reading comic books at 4 and newspapers at age 5; When tested in second grade, I was reading at the level of a high school Junior. So I taught all three of my children using phonics at age 2 1/2 and Dick and Jane at age 3. They all easily learnedand began reading outloud starting at age 3, understood the stories and responded appropriately to questioning. While it is true there is no cultural diversity, on the other hand, the images are approximately recognizable, in contrast to most children's book which are artistically complex and interesting for adults, but confusing for a child. From a radiologist perspective, the simple white background for the pictures is big advantage in focusing the child's attention on the relevant parts of the page.Start phonetically teaching them 'No', 'Go', 'So', and they will take off with these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars AHA!(aka the light bulb effect!)
Even though my son knew several sight words and could sound out many words he did not believe he could read and even refused to even try to read from a book. Enter Dick and Jane.Oh! Oh! Look and See!First attempt - "You know I can't read Mom."Second attempt and 73 pages later - "I'm a great reader!"He could relate to the stories and pictures of children and their pets playing and seemed indifferent to "the lack of plot" or monoculturalism. In fact, he laughed and enjoyed every page. Our family joyously celebrated his success with ice cream. Therefore, in response to the PhD reviewer who condescendingly pleaded "Please let experts teach reading....."lighten up and laugh a little at these simple little stories and be happy that there are parents out there that are taking the time and interest in helping their children learn. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Athletic Shorts
Athletic Shorts by Chris Crutcher is a collection of six short stories revolving around six different characters. More than a mere collection of sports related stories this book looks at everyday situations and problems about teen life. Weight problems, pushy parents, uncomfortable situations, racism, homosexuality and death. Packed into less than 200 pages Crutcher is able to captivate readers through this book with his humor as well as his insights into the young adult mind. My favorite story of the six is "The Other Pin" about a guy named Petey who is "volunteered" by his best friend to wrestle Chris Byers who has a habit of not just beating all opponents but humiliating them in the process. If that wasn't bad enought Chris Byers is also a girl. Though some of Crutcher's stories are emotional and heart wrenching all are worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
This really is a wonderful collection, one that anyone seeking to understand the mind and actions of a teenage boy or even girl should read. Chris is simple, straightforward, and always fun to read. I'd highly recommend this to any student and even some teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
This book is great for introducing children to Gay and Lesbian issues through characters and themes. Athletic Shorts is a collection of stories about athletic boys facing challenges in their lives, including " A Brief Moment in the Life of Angus Bethune," about a boy with two sets of gay parents and "In the Time I Get," in which Louie, the main character of Cruther's Running Loose becomes friends with a gay man dying of AIDS. I also recommend Am I Blue? Coming Out from the Silence by Marion Dean Bauer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL BOOK ,ESPECIALLY FOR PRE-TEENS !
The original tales presented in this book are actual memories of childhood penned by notable children's book authors. Although most of the stories have 8-10 year-olds as their protagnonists, they deal with emotions and predicaments more easily understood, I think, by slightly older children. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspired me
When I was three or four, my older sister would show me the pictures in this book and being so scared, I would cry. The images are so strong, they really make the book what it is. When I was 8, I sat there for hours.. staring at the images, afraid that just maybe they were staring back at me too. They hold so much life and creativity, they inspired me. I'm a photographer, and looking at my gallery, I can see where each picture was inspired by this book somehow (my drawings, too).
5-0 out of 5 stars Great stories!
I have always been fascinated with all of Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories collection, ever since I was a child. Stephen Gammell's drawings are really creepy and amazing. I purchased these books to hopefully share with my students. BEWARE though, some young children become frightened with some of the drawings! For ages 9 and up!

4-0 out of 5 stars These stories are TERRIFYING!
When I first first bought this audiobook, I thought that these stories wouldn't really be that great and certainly not that scary. But I was wrong. These strories are TERRIFYING! What actually makes them terrifying in the audiobook version is the narrator. He has such a dark and creepy voice while reading these stories. I am now 17 and I still can't listen to these stories alone at night. If you want to be scared out of your wits, read or listen to these stories. Listen to them in the dark by yourself. I DARE YOU! You won't last 5 minutes. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, fun for a 2-3 year old
This book is great as young children love it. There is lots to talk about and a nice story too. The riming isn't the best and could be told as well in normal story telling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our son wanted this every night for 15 nights in a row!
If you have a child that wants a book read over and over and over and over, then this is for you.A great book for your child AND a fun read for you as the adult.Great rythm and cadence.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real Sean pleaser
I bought this book for my three-year old, Sean. It has rapidly become his favorite bedtime story. It has fun rhymes with a good meter and wonderful pictures. Sean also took it to daycare for show-and-tell where it was also a big hit. We like The Gruffalo's Child so much, we have ordered the book that preceded it, The Gruffalo. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book!
I have thoroughly enjoyed watching how my little one's faces light up when it is time to read this wonderful book.It is a story that fills their little hearts with hope and encouragement, and not to mention the fact that it is packed with sound principles from God's Word. This is a very beneficial tool if you are trying to expose your young one's minds to The Pilgrim's Progress until they themselves are able to read either the abridged or unabridged Old English Classic. It is extremely well illustrated and captures the complete attention of my very active little one's minds. They don't budge one bit! This is truly a must have for every Christian family's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this picture/story book
What a blessing to be able to show your kids the life of a believer. This story is so true of a believers walk in this world and how Christian struggles through it.Great to read with the entire family. Also would be a great gift.My teens and younger onelove it too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous Journey - Entertaining, But Flawed
I am amazed that none of the other reviews caught at least one major flaw and perhaps there will be more.Simple, Sloth and Presumption are out of correct order in that The Dangerous Journey has them before the Interpreters House and before the burden is off Christian's back.John Bunyan's classic has these three characters placed after the Cross. It is important to stay true to the text because it is a Classic. This makes me wonder if the reviewers before me, have ever read the original.Such is the times in which we live.PS:The Video makes the same error. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars friendship
This is one of my favorite children's books. It reminds me that friendship is something to value and savor for every moment, and is not something to take for granted. Just as Corduroy was doing everything in his power to find his lost butten so he would be wanted, the little girl was saving her money to have companionship from Corduroy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Big Mama's House

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm oportunity to reflect on special people and places.
Donald Crews departs from his usual simple text about such things as trucks and boats to share his childhood memories. The bold and colorful illustrations we usually find in his work are replaced by soft gentle colors and lines. Perhaps my endearment to this book stems from my own fond memories of riding the train back to my grandmother's home in Davenport, Iowa. Yet, there is more to this story than shared memories of days gone by. Even young children have memories of warm moments with someone special. As a first grade teacher I share this book with my students. It is a delight to see the special smiles that illuminate their faces, like the sweet smell of Spring, when they think of their special someone. For some children they think, like Crews, of grandma and her special cooking, for others their thoughts are of a visit to mom in a distant state. There thoughts are not meloncholy, like Crews, they are pleasant reminders of the treasures we find in each other. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Live Writing
Have you ever read a book that you hated so much that you never wanted to set eyes on it again? Well I have and I want to tell you a little about it so that you don't have to go through the misery of reading it, like what I had to go through. The book I am talking about is called Live Writing, the book was written by a man named Ralph Fletcher. It is about how to write inspiringly. The author uses something called a "tool box" to explain how to create great writing. The whole book is filled with tips and short stories that a writer should add into their "tool box". Though Ralph Fletcher did have a purpose in writing this book (to help children write well), he didn't make his point well, while writing the book. This book had no point at all in it, and is a big waste of time to read.
2-0 out of 5 stars Boring, Lame, and More Boring
The book Live Writing is a basic "toolbox" for young writers. It shows different methods on how to enhance your writing, by giving you tips on grammar, topics, organization, starting out, etc. It also is an ideas index for writers in progress. For example the author talks about how he was trying to write poems, but his baby kid wouldn't stop crying and screaming, so instead of getting frustrated and giving up he decided to write poems about his baby crying. He also gives various ideas on how to make writing more interesting or to "juice it up and give it electricity".
5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice for young or beginning creative writers
This is a light, easy-to-read small book summarizing the important ideas for young creative writers.

One can imagine Edward Gorey mulling over these "Cautionary Tales",subsequently creating succinct Goreyesque illustrations for them. Then years later after presenting his family to us in "The Willowdale Handcar" he undoubtedbly mulled over ideas about families & children and came up with my personal favorite Gorey: The Gashleycrumb Tinies. If you like Gorey & you like the Tinies, you'll enjoy "Cautionary Tales".

Editorial Review

From beneath the tickles, kisses, and unfettered affection showered on them by grownups, the children in Vera B. Williams' Caldecott Honor Book cry out for "more more more!" The stars of three little love stories--toddlers with nicknames like "Little Pumpkin"--run giggling until they are scooped up by adoring adults to be swung around, kissed, and finally tucked into bed. Quirky watercolor drawings and colorful text feature multiethnic families, and young readers will rejoice in seeing the center of all the attention: the wiggly, chubby, irresistible toddlers. 5-0 out of 5 stars great read for 1-2 yr. olds
While I did not find this book appealing at first glance, my 1 year old loved it- so much so that I renewed it at the library until they would not let me renew it again. I quickly ordered our own copy as this book was an every day read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A snuggly favorite book for my un-snuggly son
I got this book as a gift, and just for kicks tried it out one day with my then 10-month old son, who is loving but not snuggly.I was totally amazed that he relaxed into my arms and listened to the book from beginning to end.He didn't even try to tear the pages. At 15 months, he still loves this book and always chooses it over any other if given a choice.I won't begin to speculate how or why, but Vera and the illustrator have captured something magic in these pages and in turn have captured the babies and toddlers who read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Would love to give 5 stars... but
As a book for very young children, I don't believe that the readability of the text should be an issue, especially for a Caldecott Honor Book. The first time I read the book, I didn't really notice it.The 2nd time, the lights were down low because I was rocking my infant to sleep.I found the words nearly impossible to read, especially in Little Guy's story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another excellent story in this series!
This is a reallllllllllllllly good book. Especially when Addie Fitch gets voodooed (ha, ha!). Well, but is the story "The Wolf Girl" true or not? It's hard to find out, but this is a really good ending of this series (well, except the only lunatic story is "No, Thanks").
4-0 out of 5 stars "Harold"
While it hardly needs to be said that Stephen Gammell's oft-lauded illustrations are absolutely, fantastically, wonderfully frightening, the actual *stories* in this series have never struck me as particularly scary. That said, however, the story "Harold" which appears in this volume is by far the scariest in the series and is, indeed, one of the creepiest tales I've ever read (and I can be quite difficult to scare!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This story is one of the Cinderella tales however this one is from Mexico.A young girl goes and cooks for the governor, and the governor is amazed by the taste of the meals that this girl can cook. However Domitila's mother dies and she must return home. The prince wanting to taste the wonderful food again goes out and searches for the woman who can cook a feast out of weeds.Although the governor faces some hardships and dishonest people in the end finds Domitila and marries her. This is a wonderful take off of the classic Cinderella story.I like it because it has Mexican traditions in it and the illustrations are wonderful. This book would be great to use as an introduction to different cultures. If I were to use this in my classroom I would try to get other countries versions of Cinderella so that they children could see even more differences and similarities in the stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now including culture, morals, and interest for boys
The story of a Mexican Cinderella character, this book is beautifully done with warmly coloured oil on canvas paintings that poignantly draw to mind the dry Mexican landscape. Most importantly, the illustrator has resisted the urge to create perfect characters, and instead presents a pleasant looking "Cinderella" with bland features and a square jaw, perhaps because the story is based on the family legend of the Rivero family of Hidalgo, Mexico. The author's text is mostly traditional for a fairy tale, but includes Spanish words with translations on the back page. The plot holds more interest than the traditional Cinderella tale, as the Prince is a Governor's son who begins the story haughty and spoiled, but while on a quest for the girl who makes delicious nopales (edible cactus, made by the common people), changes into a person of worth who can truly love a girl of the common people. This focus and character development of the often forgotten prince may make this tale more interesting to boys, as the male character is the hero on a quest, rather than the reward at the end of a girl's suffering.Furthermore, the tale is woven of realistic elements, rather than the fairy godmother, singing mice, and glass slipper of tradition, as it is explained why the father remarries, and includes a period of grief after the mother's death. However, beyond the plot and setting, the author waxes moralistic, presenting the likeable, yet lifeless Domitila as a goody-goody with a loving heart who follows her mother's instructions to "do every task with care, and always add a generous dash of love."Additionally, the text is framed in proverbs, presented both in English and Spanish, on the subjects of love and work, which add "atmosphere," but may get too sermonic to hold the attention of a child.Includes appealing history of the tale, as well as a recipe for Domitila's nopales on the last page.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, superbly illustrated picturebook tale.
Jewell Reinhart Coburn's Domitila provides a Mexican Cinderella story as it tells of a talented cook and artist who becomes the Governor's bride. A beautiful account. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great story of friendship, art, and puns, too!
This terrific book recounts the rivalry and eventual friendship of Picasso and Matisse, er, ah, excuse me...I meant, Pigasso and Mootisse. The protagonists in this story live across the street from each other and first hurl insults like,"You paint like a wild beast", (that's called "fauvism" for all you art lovers or snobs out there!) while Mootisse retorts, "You are pig-headed".Throughout, the paint and puns fly.

Editorial Review

Asked why the writing of the My Side of the Mountain trilogy took JeanCraighead George more than 40 years, she responds, "My mother disapproved ofsequels. 'Those are trashy books,' she told me when I was a child. So I grew upand did not write them.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FACINATING STORY LINE
This trilogy is excellent for a nine year old!
5-0 out of 5 stars A worthy read
'I am on my mountain in a tree home that people have passed without ever knowing that I am here. The house is a hemlock tree six feet in diameter, and must be as old as the mountain itself. I came upon it last summer and dug and burned it out until I made a snug cave in the tree that I now call home. '
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent outdoor adventures
I loved this trilogy because I like the outdoors and falcons. They are a great read because it shows examples of how humans can take care of the earth and keep our beautiful animals safe. It teaches you skills you can use if you get lost; what to eat, how to find shelter; etc. Just a wonderful series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Original Richard Scarry you loved as a kid
This edition preserves the original Richard Scarry artwork and text from the 1970's that I grew up with (and loved) as a kid. Some of the new (1990 and on) editions of Scarry stories have art that is slightly "off" from Scarry's style, and text that does not convey Scarry's wit and fun storytelling style.Rest assured that this edition has both of those!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good short stories, but has nothing to do with bedtime.
This book is a nice collection of short stories, but none of the stories have a thing to do with falling asleep. Buy this book because you want more of Richard Scarry's wonderful stories, not because you want to soothe your child to sleep. I myself feel let down because I thought I was buying stories to put my child to sleep to. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good and clever short stories
sometimes the best childrens stories are the ones that dont always have to teach something; although stories with lessons are a wonderful way to teach, the little stories in "mouse tales" are just there; to be read, and to be heard by the child and enjoyed without some lesson attached.they are whimsical and cute.my 2 1/2 yr old daughter loves lobel books and enjoyed having a big kid lobel book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addictive!
Arnold Lobel is a master story teller! He really knows how to capture a child's attention and tickle his imagination and funny bone. All of the stories in this book are great and should be classics if they are not already. My son (5 years) started this book and could not put it down! He read 5 of the 7 chapters at once and only reluctantly stopped because I told him it was time for bed. He continued with the rest of the 2 chapters in the morning. Any book that can do that gets and deserves 5 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Memories
I bought this because it was read to me as a small child. I plan to read it to my children one day.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Grandchildren Love It!
I first read this book to my grandchildren when they were 4 1/2 and 6 years old. They didn't want me to put the book down! This book and "God's Mailbox" also by Marc Gellman are great reading-aloud books, and also a wonderful way to introduce the concept of God to young children. I'm about to buy several more copies for the other young children in my family. [I am actually the wife of "Music Man RS".]

1-0 out of 5 stars Cute Doesn't Count
I see several rave reviews with which I don't agree. What I find absolutely incomprehensible is that almost all these reviewers make use of this book in Judeo-Christian religious formation. Please be assured that this book is not only without religious or theologic value but will confuse your children or thoroughly misinform them.
5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book..
I have a six-year old who is just being introduced to religion and she absolutely loves these stories.I think this is a great introductory book to get kids interested. It was recommended by my Rabbi, but he warned me we would now know where some of his stories/sermons come from! ... Read more
