3-0 out of 5 stars The Warren Witches? More like time-travel edition of never-before-told stories of Piper, Phoebe and Paige
This short story collection was given the wrong title. For a title "The Warren Witches", it should be about various ancestor witches, from Melinda Warren to The Charmed Ones, not just stories about the 3 main characters. And there are too many stories which involved time-travel. At least, there was mention of the girls' main ancestors - their mother, Grams, the 1920s cousins, Melinda, Prudence and Charlotte Warren, and Aunt Brianna - all of them should be familiar with Charmed fans. What about the other Warren Witches? Please. Do let us know more about Prudence's daughter Cassandra Warren-Wentworth. Everyone knows Aunt Brianna as she was famous for defeating Lord Gabriel. As mentioned in "Family History", she said that she has 1 sister, who has gone to America. That sister happens to be Astrid Warren-Wentworth. Both Brianna and Astrid are the daughters of Cassandra. What about letting Charmed fans know more about these witches? And Astrid's three daughters - Laura, Helena and Grace Wentworth? Tell us about any magical disaster they faced, their lives as witches, and how they overcame evil. The Wentworth sisters, each had a daughter and they became the well-known 1920s cousins, P.Bowen, P.Baxter and P.Russell. And from then, you know how the Warren Line goes. Stories that have been passed down through generations, stories on each ancestor and most importantly, their fight against evil and protecting the innocents.
3-0 out of 5 stars Tsk, tsk, tsk....
I truly believe the book could have been written better. THe title "The Warren Witches" stirs up thoughts of stories with other ancestors, not just the main characters, Piper, phoebe and paige.
2-0 out of 5 stars This Could Be Improved A Thousand Times Over....
This book just didn't have the show's signature sparkle. It was SUPPOSE to be about the Warren family, before the sisters!

5-0 out of 5 stars From the author, March 4, 2,000
An excerpt from this book, about African-American characters, was used January 31, 2,000 in a state-wide Illinois third-grade reading standards test.70,000 Illinois children got this test excerpt, in which the testersreillustrated the story without permission and changed the characters toCauscasians.I wrote the book with great care, and with the hope that manychildren will identify with my characters who are courageous and successfuland well-liked.Over 200,000 copies of the book have been sold.I knowfrom my fan mail that many children of all races do identify with thecharacters. It must have been painful for many of them to see their heroesturned white on a test--and for others who know the book, it must have beendistracting at the least. One of the testers' three new illustrationsshows the brothers in the story playing baseball.Eight books about thecharacters have been published to date (there will be a new one nextyear)--and in none of them do the characters play baseball. The testersdeveloped their test questions based on a 3-page excerpt from the book;they had never even seen a copy of the entire book (thus the error inrace), much less read it.It's quite possible that a child who had readthe book would give different answers to the test questions based on hisknowledge, and that the testers, in their ignorance, would mark it wrong. In many states, statewide tests are very serious these days--children arestigmatized for low scores, and teachers lose their jobs. But it appearsthat the tests are hastily and thoughtlessly constructed and penalize goodreaders.Parents and all of us concerned with education need to know whatkind of tests children are being subjected to. --anncameron@guate.net

5-0 out of 5 stars A surprising charmer
The humor in Nicholas probaby isn't for everybody, which might be part of why my daughter and I liked it so much. It is translated from the French, it was written originally in 1960, and the artwork is done by Jean-Jaques Sempé, who is well-known in America for his wonderful, quirky New Yorker cartoons and covers. "Nicholas" is a little boy who attends an all-boys school in France (not Paris, it seems.) He gets in trouble, as do his friends. Over and over again. The adults are exasperated, the boys cause one disaster after another but remain best of friends, and the tone is one of utter innocence. Why are those grown-ups so upset? My 8 year-old daughter LOVES this book and is begging me on a daily basis to buy the rest of them. She carries it around with her like a treasure and reads funny passages out loud at the drop of a hat. I think this is one of those books that creates its own world, not just of the story around Nicholas, but also the style of writing, the funny drawings, and the French insouciance...all these things combine beautifully. Even though my daughter is only 8, she really "gets" this book, but I'm sure it would appeal to older kids and adults, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tres Bien!
If you love jokes get this book. This book has jokes, mischief and lots more. Nicholas gets tied up,in fights, plays soccerand makes trouble for his teacher. My favorite story was about a kid from Belgium who comes to their school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Le Petit Nicolas = Nicholas
I was thrilled with this translated version of Le Petit Nicolas-- the translator did a marvelous job of retaining Nicolas' / Nicholas' straight-faced delivery, and we, the reader, are frequently left to read between the lines, just as we are in the original French. Perfect! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exposes Young Children to Quality Literature!
I bought this book and its counterpart (101 More Read-Aloud Classics) to use as the foundational texts for my Kindergarten literature homeschool curriculum. The stories are from real "living" books, not dumbed-down consumer twaddle. And, because the book includes only short excerpts, the child gets exposure to many more literary styles within a single academic year than would be possible if one attempted to read the entirety of each novel.I believe in the necessity of reading quality literature and whole books to young children.Still, this book gives a wonderful introduction to literature and can be used as a springboard to lifelong enjoyment of great books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't we have more than 10 minutes to spend with our kids???
come on, guys...can't we spend more than ten minutes each night to read to our children? especially classic books! why not just read ten minutes of the ACTUALbook to the kids so they can truly savor the piece as it was meant to be read. i cannot recommend a book that takes time away from children just so adults can selfishly have more time to work out, pay the bills, etc.this is a book definitely not worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really Touching
This book is a collection of short stories about Mexican-American teens in California, but the themes and the things they do could apply to anyone. Reading this book, you watch their transition into adulthood, the loss of innocence and the pain that comes with it. The stories are all very different. There is the story of a girl who tries to buy back all the clothes of her mother's her father gave away when her mother died. There is the story of a hardworking, honest boy, and his cousin, who flees when the going gets rough, but comes back for the glory. But all the stories weave a complicated picture that will leave you sighing wistfully at the end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite of my two-year-old twins
I had this book on the top shelf of the kids' (two year old boy and girl) bookcase for safe-keeping until they got a little older and a little better at page-turning.It's far too nice a book, I thought, to be torn and wrinkled by a couple of toddlers who can't even appreciate it.It contains a wonderful variety of poems, and Eric Carle's artwork is stunning. He devotes a two-page spread to most of the animals; the whale at the beginning takes up four pages.
5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic!!!
This is a fantastic book, full of wonderful poetry and Eric Carle's trademark collage art. This book includes poetry selections that span the cultures, including Native American, aboriginal, and Japanese to name a few. Many of the big names in poetry are here, from Shakespeare to Ogden Nash. I especially liked the reference to creation included with a quote from Genesis and a picture of a whale. My personal favorite poem in the book is "Mother Doesn't Want a Dog," and why "She's making a mistake." This is a great introduction to poetry for children that the whole family loves. Truly a great addition to my homeschool library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Animal collection
This book contains a collection of animal poems. The sources of the poems are quite varied, from Emily Dickinson, to the Bible, to Japanese haikus. All sorts of animals are featured, from fireflies to hippopotami. There are no scary bits, and the pictures are great. At the end of the book is an index of the animals and a table of contents by first lines to help you find your favorite poems. The book has about 2900 words. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great stories for young children
Great stories for young chldren told from the perspective of an orphan black cat, Jenny Linsky. Like young children, who are inexperienced and often intimidated by challenges, Jenny tries to do her best for herself, her owner, and her new cat friends. Delightful, gentle stories I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars We all cheered for Jenny
My seven year-old daughter received this book as a gift.I read it to her and my five year-old son.We just couldn't get enough of Jenny. The stories are heart-warming and old-fashioned yet children today can relate to Jenny's fears and triumphs. From her anxiety about not being worthy of the Cat Club, through her triumph at her first party, to her generosity as she adopts two brothers, we couldn't help but cheer for Jenny!
5-0 out of 5 stars Be prepared to read it again and again!
My four and a half year old loves cats so I couldn't wait to give her this book for Christmas. Truly, over even her biggest present, I think this is her favorite Christmas gift of 2005. Every night since she received it we have been reading Jenny's stories. When we finished it the first time, we started over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Children like this book
My children (ages 5-10) love this book.I have also read from this book to hospitalized teenagers; when I read Oedipus I finished the story and heard a chorus of "read it again!"5-0 out of 5 stars Best introduction to its subject that I know of
When one is trying to get a basic overall grasp of Greek mythology, it can be an overwhelming and formidable subject, and one can be at a loss for the best place to start. Most books I've found either give too much detail too fast or else are hit-and-miss selections that don't give a very comprehensive introduction. If that's been your experience too, this book could be an excellent solution to your problem. It gives a highly readable thorough introduction without overwhelming you with details. As an introduction to or review of Greek mythology, it is therefore highly recommendable. Although probably aimed primarily at children, I suppose grown-ups too, if not already expert on the subject, won't find it too elementary.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book~

4-0 out of 5 stars You Read to Me and I'll Read to You
When the child is familiar with the nursery rhymes, and has repeated them over and over until they are really familiar, this book provides a delightful way of creating drama out of them. Two people reading them., and enjoying the reading, can introduce drama and put a completely different slant on the familiar rhymes, extending the meaning, and extending their usefulness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Title and Grade Level May Mislead Some Buyers
This book is delightful for the right age or skill-level reader. Please don't expect the child to read back to you until the child is about 8-10. Through hearing an older skilled reader share the stories, the child will love them ; however, in most cases the child will not easily be able to read back until grades 3 or 4. Read enough sample pages to judge for the child you have in mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing! Its back in print!
This was one of the truly formative books of my youth.Silly and fun and with a wonderful rhyme.I have the most wonderful memories of my mother reading this to me.Years ago, when I first had children, I HAD to find this book for them and it was out of print.I managed to find an excellent copy but spent nearly $100 for it -- and thought it worth every cent! Now that its back in print, I've bought FOUR more copies -- for gifts for all the children of the right age that I can think of.Highly, highly, highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Still baking after all these years...
This book is the reason I got a library card as a child.I loved (and still love) the predicament of the duchess. She was only trying to bake "a lovely light luscious delectable cake" for her family--but things get a bit out of control when she adds too much leavening to the batter. The rhyme and meter are lilting and memorable, the names of her daughters (e.g. "Gunhilde") sound exotic and old-fashioned to a child's ear, and the illustrations are delightful.I'm now in my 30's, and am pleasantly surprised to find that the book is still in print.Even though I don't have any children, I have purchased the book so that I can read it to my siblings' kids and pass on the laughter (and memories) to another generation in my family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Joy
This is a lyrical, rhythmic, rhyming book of pure joy.Read to a toddler, it will sooth and enchant; to a pre-reader, it becomes a lesson in language and a memory exercise; as an adult with grandchildren of my own, it is a sweet remembrance of my childhood to share with the little one in my lap.It comes with my own personal five star rating. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Just Horrible...but That's a Good Thing in this Case!
The back cover promises that "Horowitz Horror is a wicked collection of macabre tales sure to send shivers up your spine" and for the most part this is quite true. This particular book was originally published in 1999 in Great Brittan, so all the tales are set there and have a decidedly English feel to them. This lends an additional kind of creep to the tales, as one gets a very genteel and proper feel from the language, but the stories are anything but genteel and proper!

5-0 out of 5 stars For any guy
I almost got to hear Jon Scieszka talk about this book in person in 2005 but the fire marshal closed the large auditorium at the San Antonio convention center and a huge number of librarians were left staring at the closed doors. The overflow attendance at his talk highlighted the level of concern there is about boys and reading (or their lack thereof) today.

3-0 out of 5 stars IT WAS OK
This book is only some dragon stories selected from different books and myths( like The Hobbit and The Voyge of the Dawn Treader),but is still a pretty well done book, you will probably enjoy it if you REALLY like dragons.

4-0 out of 5 stars 11 year old Dragon lover gives big thumbs up!
I've read a few of the stories so far and I'm looking forward to reading more.So far I've read "The Dragon Tamers", "Perseus and Andromeda", "The Flower Queen's Daughter," "Bilbo Baggins and Smaug", "The Devil and his Grandmother", and "The Good Sword."All of the stories really held my attention and I couldn't put the book down. The only better Dragon book I've read is "Eldest."- by Louis, age 11

5-0 out of 5 stars It was so good
I liked all the different stories. There were some stories from books that I had read before like one about Smog the dragon from The Hobbit. There were also some pretty funny dragon stories.Overall there was a nice mix of dragon stories.I highly recommend this book to kids from about age 8 and up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Engaging, and Enlightening
These stories are wonderful.Full of imagintion, it's been able to draw my very active [...] into the stories.Every story has a moral and it's great for the children to learn them and is a great reminder for adults too (especially when you get caught up in the everyday grind and forget the simple things in life)!!!The moral of each story is stated in the beginning of the tale and reiterated at the end of the story.Great stories, great illustrations, and just TERRIFIC!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not really classics, but a good collection all the same.
'The Serendipity Collection' includes Zippity Zoom, Ming Ling, Butterwing, Serendipity, Sassafras, Rhubarb and Memily.
5-0 out of 5 stars love serendipity collection
I have read the Serendipity books to my daughter when she was young, she had almost the entire collection, but being in the military and moving from place to place, we lost a lot of the collection.I found the Serendipity Collection, in hard bound, with 7 wonderful stories in it, purchased it, and now I read it to my grandchildren.Once again Serendipity is being read in my house again. My grandchildren, which are 6 and 5 yrs. old, love the stories. They turn the tv OFF when it is bedtime and grab the book and wait for me to come to read the stories to them. When a child will turn the Disney Channel off, for a story book reading, that alone says a lot about the book.My grandchildren love this book, and yes, I will be buying more and more of this series. The pictures in the book are so fantastic and life like, I really am glad to find this book, and the morals in the book are just what we try to teach our children and grandchildren. This book will be a joy to anyone that loves to read to children and watch their faces as they see the darling pictures. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag of Beauty, Flowers, Myth and Pretentious Problems, Flaws
No, this isn't a perfect book series. It can be weighed down by pretentious storylines and attempts to address serious issues. (ex. Weetzie's attempts to get a child cause major rifts worthy, for a while, of Oprah.Dirk and Duck, one of the series most prominent couples, become a spring board for heavy subjects of bigotry and AIDS.)Melodrama will sometimes take the place of real emotion.Weetzie, the main character through out the first book at least, is mostly defined as an "original person" because of her part in a punk culture that will eventually become to mainstream.Observations made in the series are often superficial.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book Ever
From the moment I laid eyes on this book I knew it would change my literary life forever. From the stunning cover to the final paragraph, this book is a delight for the mind and the senses... It's a book takes you into a magical world with brilliant and amazing characters... Also some supernatural beings, their in here too... And oddly enough it's a book that makes you hungry, hungry for delicious sounding foods and hungry for life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sparkly and Fabulous Fiction for YAs and Others
This is a book which you will either love to pieces or find intensely aggravating.I adored it.It's a compendium of books that deal with Weetzie Bat, her boyfriend Secret Agent Man, and their extended kooky family.I love the quirkiness of the characters and the lush language Block uses to describe their surroundings.I read this as an adult, but I would have been even more utterly thrilled if I had received this as a teenager when I had no idea such a world could exist. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Joy for Students and Teachers
Sharon Flake takes the spin on teenage relationships to a new level in this unique book on young love.Unlike some books which simplify adolescent relationships as mere infatuations or persistent melodrama this takes a look at all of the complicated reasons both men and women might enter a destructive relationship. Not afraid of controversy, Flake explores teen pregnancy, abusive boyfriends, dead beat dads, back stabbing best friends, the rich/poor dichotomy and how all of it can affect a teenager's life. Each of the characters are faced with the question of who they are without "the man" in question in their life ...and the answers will surprise you.
4-0 out of 5 stars Who Am I Without Him?
I picked up this book thinking it'd be horrible.Even the title is forboding:"Who am I without him?"How anti-feminism.I didn't think I would ever be able to enjoy this book.
2-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK WAS SUGER COATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THAT IS NOT HOW IT GOES DOWN IN REAL LIFE!!!!!!!!! THE ONLY REASON I GAVE IT A 2 IS BECAUSE I ENJOYED THE FAT GIRL IN THAT WAS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
