4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for toddlers!
My 21 month loves Maisy. She enjoys "looking" for Maisy and her friends in this lift the flap book. This book also introduces counting numbers, colors and shapes. A great book for toddlers. Another great Maisy book is Maisy's Playhouse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shadow dances
In many ways, the collected works of E.L. Konigsburg can be summarized quite simply. With few exceptions, her books feature children wise beyond their years.Whether you're skimming the self-aware musings of Claudia in, "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" or chancing across the adventures of the kids of, "A View From Saturday", Konigsburg excels at creating kids that embodythe statement, Know Thyself. And the best example of this, without question, is her 1979 collection of five short stories entitled, "Throwing Shadows".The bookflap for this work says of the characters that, "In each of these lives something happens that allows the hero to throw a shadow that is his very own, one that is sharp and has a shape as specific as a fingerprint".At its worst, this book seems like a series of writing assignments penned by the author. At its best, it tells unique tales about learning to be honest with one's self.
4-0 out of 5 stars Everyone throws a shadow...
Konigsburg has written 5 short stories that each are designed to teach a lesson about life in a subtle manner. The stories are somewhat entertaining and beautifully written. While there is something that can be learned from life, none of these stories have large impacting moments; rather they are all lessons we learn from daily experiences with people. That was what I liked about it.4-0 out of 5 stars More great reading by Kongisburg
This is a collection of short stories by my favorite children's author. Although I have "out grown" her books, I will never feel that way. She is an amazing author, and although I am not Jewish, I feel like I have learned about the Jewish culture through the characters in her books. A must-have for Konigsburg fans. ... Read more

He just started really reading in the last few months, and these books were an instant hit because he can read them himself! The only downside is the pictures are really "dated" (50s style). But the words and plots are simple and straightforward, and we all enjoyed them.

Editorial Review

Like all best friends, George and Martha do everything together--go to the movies, play at the beach, and just hang around not doing much of anything. No matter that they happen to be gigantic hippopotami, they learn the same lessons humans do about the ups and downs of true friendship. George and Martha teach each other (and adoring readers) that even in a close friendship, privacy is important, practical jokes can sometimes backfire, and among other things, pouring split pea soup into your loafers to spare the chef's feelings is not the best laid plan.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We love George and Martha!
This book is wonderful because it contains ALL of the George and Martha stories. The stories are funny and sweet. We've given this book many times as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars hysterical, cute and witty collection of stories about two best friends...
This pair of large, friendly, well-dressed hippopotemi is a throwback to some of the happiest days of my childhood.Though, these stories are short and to-the-point, they actually carry powerful and compelling messages about friendship and life. This is evident in how these two large creatures treat and interact with one another. Not only are the pictures hysterical, the stories last with you for a lifetime.I am thinking, in particular, about "Split Pea Soup," the story about Martha and her obsession with preparing soup that George just doesn't want to eat anymore.I am sure this is a dilemma that people, young and old, can relate to!I am so glad that they put this collection together, with a forward by Maurice Sendak.I reccomend this to readers, young and old.

5-0 out of 5 stars La pura verdad-the whole truth
This is a great family book.I am American Caucasian and my husband is a Mexican imigrant. We read this story out loud to one another, and while it is writen (very well) in simple English so that any reader could probably read it,we enjoyed it imensly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book was very interesting. I loved the way this book shows how Mexicans suffer, struggle and work hard to get what they need to survive. This book has a good way of showing the different types of experiences the family goes through. It gets to a point where you get so into the book that you get frightened of what could happen to the family next. You don't know if the family is going to get caught by the border patrol or if you're going to be able to find a job for the next season. You just don't know if your going to be able to survive the only thing you have in your hands is hope and faith.
5-0 out of 5 stars Want to know what it's like?
This book is a great place to start if you are interested in learning about the life of someone less priviledged than yourself. Perhaps it will help you appreciate the simple pleasures in life and everything that you've got. When you reach the end of the book, you'll be glad Jimenez wrote a sequel (Breaking Through).

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the very best
Absolutely superb. Don't read the book copy (it might give too much away), in fact - don't even read these reviews. Just buy the book and dig in. You won't regret it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Haunting
A dreamy affair, this book traverses the boundary between reality and the hyper-real with breathtaking skill. The storylines are often unimportant, taking a back seat to the prose, which flows and twists with great dexterity and poetry. This is a strongly visual book that would certainly appeal to readers of all ages. It would be of particular interest to those with a predilection towards fantasy. There is a strong thematic of family bonds throughout, and though no time period is mentioned, the nature of the writing and storytelling (strong family themes, the near absence of any technology) gives me the impression that most of the stories are set in the distant past, which only adds to the otherworldly qualities. I like the title as well because blackness is a strong image created throughout, almost like the book is an anthology of stories from the dark ages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Deep Dark Fantasy
A Bit Unusual. This is a rather interesting fantasy collection but it is not for everybody. These ten tales are dark but they are not horror. Some seem to be in our world while others are in worlds twisted and strange. The very first story where a family participates in an act of justice against one of their own should warn the reader of what is to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Imagination Required
These books are so plain and simple, many parents will write them off, thinking there will not be enough pizazz to entertain their children. But what so many parents forget, is although it may not entertain adults, children do not need much.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for building confidence in beginning reader!
I bought this book for my daughter who was getting comfortable with reading beginner phonics books and was ready for that next step.
4-0 out of 5 stars fun with Dick and Jane
This is a fine story, but if you're ordering such a book, I would recommend a bigger, thicker book of Dick and Jane, and you will see that this story will be in there too, along with many other stories. This book is only 32 pages long and a child can read that in fifteen minutes (some pages only have a couple of words on them), so to me it's not worth the money. If you want nightly reading, buy a book of Dick and Jane that is at least 100, or more pages long. You will get the same results, but more stories. Not to mention, it's only about six bucks more, and hardcover. Most of Dick and Jane's hardcover books are at least 144 pages long. My kids love this story, but you will find the same stories in the hardcover version, with a lot more stories to excite your child. These are great beginner readers, and you'll find that your child won't want to stop reading once they read the first couple of pages because reading makes them feel independent, and grown-up. How disappointing it will be to put the book down and not have more stories to read. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Much to her parents' chagrin, 5-year-old Ruthie has a devoted invisible friend named Jessica. When Ruthie accidentally spills juice, Jessica gladly takes the blame. When Ruthie's parents plan to hire a baby sitter and goto a movie, Jessica gets a tummy ache and needs them to stay home. "There is no Jessica," her parentskeep insisting. "But Ruthie knew there was," the author keeps repeating. Kevin Henkes's Popsicle-coloredwatercolors and detailed pen-and-ink drawings invite us into Ruthie and Jessica's fantasy world. Throughhis handwritten cartoon dialogue, we are privy to their tender conversations and confidences. When it's timeto start kindergarten, Ruthie's father suggests that Jessica stay home. But of course Ruthie brings Jessicaanyway. On that fateful day we discover what Ruthie knew all along--there really is a Jessica! Children whobelieve in imaginary playmates will find their soul mate in Ruthie. And parents who fret over the isolation ofan absorbing imaginary life will find comfort in the story's happy ending. All families will appreciate thetwists of fate that allow a child's fantasy world to joyfully overlap into the real one. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So realistic!
This book hits home as a Kindergarten teacher. The words are so true to life and it can really relate to a child who may be going through the same things that Rutie is going through.I love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Daughter's Favorite Book
An elementary school teacher gave me this book at my baby shower. She told me that her students loved "Jessica," and that my daughter would, too.Time has proven her correct. Recently, my daughter, who isnow two and a half years old, asked that I read her the book. "Jessica" has quickly become her favorite book. The story isabout five-year-old Ruthie.Ruthie doesn't have a brother, a sister, acat, or a dog but she has an imaginary friend, Jessica, "who is evenbetter."Although Ruthie's parents tell her that "There is noJessica," Ruthie knows that there is.The book describes all of theactivities that Ruthie and Jessica do together and concludes with Ruthie'sdiscovery of a "real" Jessica when Ruthie begins kindergarten. Mydaughter loves this book and can recite it word for word.Children quicklybecome familiar with the story because key words and phrases are repeatedthroughout the book. More importantly, the book talks about activitiesand fears that all young children have and accurately depicts a child'shesitation to voice his or her fears. For example, when Ruthie's parentswant to go to a movie, "Jessica," not Ruthie, gets a stomach acheand wants them to stay home. This is a terrific book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Making friends is easier than it looks!
I just read this book a few minutes ago.it's about a little girl named Ruthie who has an imaginary friend named Jessica. They do everything together! From reading books, to playing with blocks. They are the bestof friends.Ruthie's parents try to get her to believe that Jessica isn'treal, but Ruthie won't listen to them.On the first day of kindergarden,Jessica goes along with Ruthie. But, Ruthie makes a new friend, whose namealso happens to be Jessica and they become really good friends.I thinkthat if you know of a child who has an imaginary friend, then they shoulddeffinately read this book, or you could read it to them! ... I bought this book for my 16 month old son.He loves The Sesame Street Word book and thought this would be a good addition to his collection. He likes it okay, but still prefers the Word Book hands down. It starts with the alphabet devoting one to two pages per letter. Each page(s) has the letter and pictures of things starting with the letter. It also has the word naming the picture.I agree with other reviewers..some letters were not depicted very well compared to others. The second half covers numbers 1-20 then skip counts by tens numbers 20-100.All are done with pictures. If you had one book to buy I'd get The Sesame Street Word Book. However if you want to add to other educational books you have, this is a great purchase. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Thematic Collection For Teaching
This is an excellent collection of stories dealing with the complexities of identity and identification. Although the book is marketed as young adult, every story in it is worthy of serious academic study. I have taught it every year for the past six years and am always amazed at how the collection itself is better than the sum of its parts. Each story raises and plays off issues that the others deal with. If you want to teach a thematic unit on the issue of friendship, enmity, or identity this is the only book you need. Alternatively, you could use this as a great introduction to a novel that deals with the same issues.Read more

This review is for William Bausch's Pilgrim Church. If you are looking for an accurate and fair representation of Catholic Church History in accordance with Church Teaching and Tradition, keep looking. This book is an extremely biased propaganda piece that Bausch uses to push his modernist agenda on every page. From his bizarro take on Apostolic Succession to his misinterpretation of Scripture and his two-fisted railing against the papacy of JP II, it is impossible to separate the facts from Bausch's slanted view of the Roman Catholic Church. He offers very little evidence to support his claims with the exception of citing several Protestant Theologions and Historians (that is, when he's not too busy bashing the church for it's teachings on women ordination and priestly celibacy). If not Heresy it's at least Heterodoxy. No good Catholic need confuse themselves with this book.I intend to use it as kindling next winter. While I have not read them, I have been told that Warren Carroll's History of Christendom set is excellent.Save your money and avoid this book.Even if you fancy yourself a Modernist Catholic (and please honestly reconsider that position), seek out a fair book that gives you facts to challenge or deepen your faith and understanding of history. When you twist so many facts to fit an agenda, as Bausch has, no one will ever profit.

1-0 out of 5 stars BE AWARE that this is not "The Pilgrim Church"
The author "WJ Bausch" attempts to exemplify the catholic church as the cornerstone of christianity and how it has adjusted over time to become better in his revised book "Pilgram Church". In contrast to "The Pilgram Church" written by EH Broadbent who researches the so called heretics of the church as defined by the Catholic documents. He explains that some of those so called heretics were followers of Christ who opposed the Catholic regulations put upon them and desired to follow the scriptures instead. EH Broadbent convincently documents the reminent of true followers of biblical scriptures behind the Catholic dictatorship and describes how God has maintained His church. Please be aware of the title of the books because you can be misinformed. As the review of "Paris Templin" shows (Its a review of "The Pilgrim Church" not "Pilgrim Church". In short "Pilgrim Church" does not even come close to depth of "The Pilgrim Church"

1-0 out of 5 stars A misplaced review
A note to review readers -- the last of the reviews given below, written by Paris Templin, is NOT a review of William Bausch's "Pilgrim Church."Mr. Templin's review is of a different book by E. H. Broadbent which shares the same title. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Come On, Rain!"A Truly Beautiful Book!
I found the book "Come On, Rain!" at our local library and immediately picked it up. The first thing you will notice about this beautiful book are the gorgeous ilustrations! The pictures in this book are lovely and the prose is so happy and full of the anticipation everyone feels on a hot summer day while waiting for a cooling rain. You and you children will love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lyrical picture book
This lyrical ode to the coming rain, accompanied by the soothing wash of lush watercolors, make Hesse's Come on, Rain! sure to please young children. In prose that reads like poetry, young Tessie bemoans the heat of summer while waiting with confidence that rain will soon come.Along with her multicultural friends and all their mammas, Tessie dances in gratitude for the refreshing wetness the rain bestows. While the lyrical prose is of such beautiful quality it could stand on its own, the soft watercolor illustrations portray the emotions of the characters in such lovely detail; the two, the prose and illustrations, combine to create a delightful work of art.Even with the vertical lines of rain which one would expect to stop the motion of the story, Muth manages to create a sense of flowing from left to right, page to page, in keeping with the cadence of the text by using achromatic colors for the backgrounds of most pages.Recommended for children ages 4-8.Public librarians may want to share this title in a storytime about rain, along with Bill Martin's Listen to the Rain.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is more than just another weather story!
"Come on, rain!" are the fervent words of Tess, as she looks toward the sky with a great deal of anticipation and hope. It has not rained in 3 weeks. Therefore, everyone in Tess's neighborhood and city was hoping for rain to bring relief from the scorching heat. Well, the best part of this story is that it seems her fervent words finally reached the clouds; for "over rooftops, past chimneys, into the way off distance . . . clouds came rolling in." As soon as Tess realizes that her wish for rain was on the way, she quickly gathers her close friends together (and their mothers too) to run, dance and play in the wonderful rain showers that fall upon the city.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Grandson Loves It!
My wife and I initially borrowed this book at our local library for our 4-year-old grandson. He loved it so much that we bought it for him.The illustrations are endlessly fascinating to him.I strongly recommend this book for young children (and their grandparents too!).

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Illustrated, Well-told Story (not for the timid or very young)
4 1/2 Stars
3-0 out of 5 stars Well-Illustrated Classic
A faithful rendering of a classic story with artful decoration.Like most of the "Jack" stories, this story of cunning, belief in self, perseverence, duplicity, and violence evokes mixed feelings for adult readers. My young daughter loves the story and the pictures, but appeared to take the story too seriously at first. Now it's just another bedtime story with lovely pictures and a well-worn plotline. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too
Written over ten years ago, AM I BLUE? is still as important today as it was then.A short-story collection dealing with GLBT (gay/lesbian/ bisexual/transgender) issues by some of 1995's top authors, this book is a true gem for teens searching for their identity--or just looking for a good read. With stories ranging from contemporary paranormal, to ones set in the 1950's, to one based during the Vietnam War, and even one in another world of Amazon warriors, there's something here for everyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Overall a great book!
There are some stories in this book that are absolutely phenomenal. "Am I Blue" is one of them, and it is a great first story of the book. This books helps people to understand what it is like to be GLBT from many different viewpoints."The Honorary Shepherd" is probably the story that impacted me the most, as it deals with interracial relationships as well.Having bought this book on accident, I am glad I did.I've probably read the book 15 times through and I don't know if I'll ever tire of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me out
Reading this book helped me to figure out who I was, that I am gay. I'd been wondering for years, literally, but afraid to decide and not really sure either what it meant, but one day, at the North Shore Library this book caught my eye and the next day after reading it I came out to myself.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting mix of historical and fictional heroes
William J. Bennett and Michael Hague, having teamed together to produce the national bestseller "The Children's Book of Virtues," now offer up "The Children's Book of Heroes," which celebrates heroic deeds, both historical and fictional, as appropriate inspiration for children.Certainly it is interesting to see the dozen-plus heroes, from Christopher Columbus and Jackie Robinson to the legendary Sir Roland to a young girl named Tashira, who are presented in this volume.5-0 out of 5 stars My Kids are Enthralled
Bennett has edited another fine book that introduces young children to values and charactor while making reading interesting.5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all parents, forget the politics, buy the book
