5-0 out of 5 stars brilliant
I guess I read this when I was twelve and it was first published. I don't remember much about it now, except that I just recently have paid off the late charges I incurred at the library because of this book. (Also the Young Detective's Handbook to be perfectly honest.) I intend to purchase it now, because 8 years later I still remember it as being something beautiful.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Little Group of Stories
There's some weird and wonderful stuff in these short stories, and that's what makes them worth reading. This is classic Wynne-Jones, one of the best authors I know of.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amalgam of childish, feel-good stories
This book was quite possibly the best book I have ever owned. In fact, I liked it soo much that I lent it to all of my friends so that they could ead it.Most of them disliked it, but then one of them liked it so muchthat they stole it.(We're not friends anymore) But, that is allirrelevant. The point is, I am now scouring the Earth for another copy ofthis book, because I need to own it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to reach kids who aren't avid readers.
My son is in 8th grade and never a big reader (which I am trying to change). This book appealled to him on two levels.First, the short story format was less "stressful" than having to commit to a full length book.Second, the variety of stories has something for everyone. Some stories he identified with personally and others he felt helped him understand someone his age with a different background. There was also a mix of humor and seriousness that he really enjoyed. We both reccommend this book heartily.

4-0 out of 5 stars PRETTY DARN GOOD
13 is exactly what the subtitle says it is about. It capture the agony and ecstasy of being thirteen more than any other book i have read. But, then again, I havn't read any other books about being 13 years old. Anyways, 13 is a great book. It is a quick read but you will find yourself having problems putting it down. I recomended this book for anyone. If your past the age of 13 you can relate to it, if not, you can find out what 13 is all about. All in all, 13 is PRETTY DARN GOOD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read aloud to use in your class.
I read some of the stories in this book in my classroom and my students loved it. I had kids lining up to check the book out from me after I read the first story, which incidently may be one of the funniest stories i have ever read aloud in class. A must have book for any middle school teacher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The River
"He saw the blueness, almost a ball of energy, the crack-flash of color that came from inside his mind, inside his life, and then he was back and down and saw nothing more." You may never know when there will be a day where your stranded on an Island with know where out, you have yourself and Mother Nature with you, that's it. The River is a book that has to do with survival; Brian Robeson was alone with Mother Nature itself for fifty-four days with a small hatchet from his mother. Luckily Brian overcame the wilderness and survived. The U.S Government has contacted Brian to help teach the military and astronauts to survive the way he did. The only problem is he has to go back and face the wilderness again like he did once before. Derek Holtzer a government psychologist will join Derek and take notes for survival skills during the trip.

1-0 out of 5 stars lazy storytelling
There are so many interesting adventures George could have had in a museum, but the authors decided on a worthless plot.George is at a science museum on a class trip with children. The teacher is trying to teach them about rocks and minerals, and the children are all whining about how boring it is.George runs away from the group and climbs all over the skeleton of a dinosaur in a nearby room.He is scolded by a member of the museum staff (as right he should be!!!) but then the class catches up with him and the children are interested in the dinosaur bones. The story suggests that the only reason they are interested is because George is climbing on it!The teacher is grateful that George has found something better to look at than the dull rocks and the museum staff, glad that the children have been spared their boring museum, readily forgive George and hail him as a hero. What a bunch of bologna!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the message you want to give your kids
This is just not up to the caliber of the original books....The behavior and comments of the children in the story convey themessage that learning is unpleasant and museums are boring - - not themessage I want to give to my children. In addition, George climbs adinosaur fossil and the museum director states that this activity isok, because now the children are not bored by having to be at thedull, old museum. This book was a gift which we have removed from ourbookshelf.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not the same
This book is " adapted from the Curious George film series". The illustrations are different from the original, and even from the "Illustrated in the style of H.A. REY" both of which I feel are much better.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
Having grown up in the Philippines, I had wonderful memories of reading folk stories in grade school.Though I cannot find our text book that sparked my imagination, this was the best thing I can find.I sometimes even use it as a Sunday school supplement to teach values like honesty, sharing, friendships, and so forth.I always have a captive audience!

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than nothing
Beautiful illustrations! My 3 year old enjoys looking at the pictures. But, I'm disappointed with the storytelling. I've read many of these stories as a child and wanted to share them with my son. But, I found the style long on words and a bit tedious. Older versions of these tales told in a straight-forward manner made for livelier story-telling. Many of these stories are half as long in older translations than what appears here. I would not recommend this were it not the ONLY easily available book on Filipino stories for children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming and Humorous Addition for your child's library
I was randomly looking for a children's book on the Philippines for my young son, who is half Filipino on his mother's side.I wanted something suitable for a young child, and that would also provide a positive view of Filipino culture and people.I can say unequivocably I found what I wanted in this book. There are charming stories, beautiful illustrations, and a refreshinly positive perspective on an Asian society that is so often viewed for only its economic problems.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Delightful read
Since I read Rain of Gold first, I noticed that a couple of vignettes in the book were cited from it, but nevertheless, I still enjoyed the read. These are stories from the heart, and for non-practicing Catholics, it certainly explains away a family's faith and spirituality as a away of living, coping and survival.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice nightime reading
I read Rain of Gold over 10 years ago, when I saw "Walking Stars" I decided to give it a try. I must say, the stories were a nice way to end a day. My daughters enjoyed them as bedtime reading. With the world shouting so much doom & gloom, this book helped us remember - it's all good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must buy!
Don't rule this out for your older children...I just bought it for my just-turned-8yo dd after starting a library copy of it and all of us (including 10yo brother) being enchanted (he actually suggested buying it...said it was a "classic"!)!It reminds you of simpler times... the wholesome joys of childhood. It probably is best for 8 and under but we found it absolutely charming!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bridging the generation gap
This book was the first I was able to read myself, at age 4. It had been my mother's book as a child, and I still have her copy. I was amazed to see that it is still being printed and is still so popular. Somehow I thought it was unknown to most people (my little secret!) 5-0 out of 5 stars Memories of a childhood

5-0 out of 5 stars Great toddler choice!
We received this book just three days ago and have already read it cover to cover countless times! My nearly 2 year old son loves trying to identify the objects in the wonderful illustrations. Great for little ones with no patience for the longer stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book that your child can grow with
My brother sent me this book after getting it for his own kids many years ago.All 3 of mine have enjoyed it from 1 - 6 years old.As others have indicated, there are some traditional rhymes and some more modern, but the mix is good and the illustrations are charming (to me and my kids).I have watched my oldest grow with the book and her interest in different poems change as she matures.Like all good nursery rhyme collections, it can be enjoyed for many years.Plus a nice change from Mother Goose, which can be challenging for a child in today's modern world to relate to (tired of trying to explain a tinker or the town crier?!).

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Gift
I purchsed this as a baby gift.I wanted something the new parents could learn nursery rhymes from. This isn't really the book to do that as it doesn't contain very many "common" nursery rhymes. However it does have beautful pictures and made a nice gift anyway. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the tales of mystery and madness
this book is called the tales of mystery and madness. This book is like a comic. But the story that i read is about a man who lived a normal life with a wife and a cat.The cat followed him every were he went, until one night he came home drunk and tried tograb the cat but the cat bit him so he got angry and poked the cat eye out. Then the cat never followed him again so he got angry and hung the cat. After that he went to the bar to get a drink and then he saw a cat who looked like the old cat that he hung.So his wife came to the bar and had bought the cat,so then the cat started to follow him every where he went just like the last cat did. Then he got so angry causethe cat would not leave him alone. So he took the cat to the basement and tried to kill it but his wife stoped him from killing the cat.So instead of killing the cat he killed his wife and buried her in the walls with the cat.Couple weeks later the police came knocking on his door,he had open the door and fast as they could the police rushed in and started to search his house but they found nothing until the police had found the basement and started to search but yet they found nothing. But all of a sudden a noise came threw the walls,he tried to cover the wall that he buried her but it was no good the police pushed him out the way and started tobang rhe walls.Wall colapsed and there stood the corpse bride with the cat on her head.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Teaching Text
This is a cookbook-like approach to the teaching of poetic form. Each chapter presents a different form, a step-by-step guide to implementing a lesson with students (which is clear enough, I've found, to leave for a substitute lesson plan!), and selected examples of successful types.A great work for junior and senior high school general-level classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - Fresh and Unusual
This book is a wonderful mix of fresh and unusual activities and guiding interludes by the authors. The book is not only a great way to get you creative juices lowing, but it is an inspiring read. Many of my students enjoy the interludes between activities as much as the activities themselves. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best how-to poetry book out there!

5-0 out of 5 stars short stories about tough issuses
This book is a great book about teens dealing with tough issues. It touches on many issuse that teens deal with every day, such as teen pregnancy, drug use and abuse, not knowing how to handle. The fact that it is written as a group of short stories makes it that much more appealing to a younger audience.5-0 out of 5 stars Great stories...there's at least one for everyone
I read this book in less than a day.The stories were really realistic, and they're things that real teenagers face in everyday life. All the stories are by different authors, and I liked how they put a mini-bio after each of the stories to tell about that author's most famous books that had won the most prizes, etc.It helped, because if there was a story I really liked, then I could get the book with the longer version (most of the stories came from a book the author had written). It was an awesome book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent discussion tool for character education . . .
Given the recent trend toward violence with teenagers, this book provides a powerful discussion piece in the middle school classroom. The stories in this collection all have characters who face difficult moral delimmas. This can spark many classroom activities where students determine the bestcourse of action. This gets young adults talking about character, takingresponsiblity, and choosing the right path. Furthermore, the high interestlevel of the stories hook even the most reluctant of readers! It was hardfor anyone in the room to put down. ... Read more
