4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Illustrations!
My one year olds like to flip through this book. They love trucks, so anything with the theme works for them. Warning: if you are going to read this one aloud, you'll have to make up the story - no text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Picture Book
I was able to use this book for a "Transportation" unit used in our Reading Program. It's full of colorful pictures and encourages children to come up with imaginative sentences and/or phrases. It helps students who are not able to read as well let you know what is going on in each picture. It helps with their visual comprehension and re-telling of stories without reading. This is a book that is great for "bilingual" students as well.It helps with their limited English and repeats words to aid in their visual literacy.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Memory From My Childhood...
I remember looking at this book when I was about 6 or 7, I am now 25 and it has stuck with me all of these years and influenced my life (I am a truck driver) and I can not wait to one day share the same book with my son. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A childhood favorite!
It's lovely to see this book is back in print.I received a copy as a birthday gift when I was 5 years old (it was a new publication then!) and continue to treasure that same volume today.I also received a real pair of clogs from Japan about the same time, so the story took on even more meaning for me.I have an opportunity to teach a workshop in Japan in May about how our experiences are reflected in our artworks -- and this beautifully illustrated story which taught me so much about integrity, as well as Japanese culture, will be an important reference in my presentation.Simple lessons, so important to a child's character, kindly taught, DO last a lifetime! This is an important book for your child's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars buy this book for a child you love
My mother recently mailed to me a 40 year-old copy of "A Pair of Red Clogs" that I had when I was small.I wept in recognition of the poignant, exquisite illustrations of this young girl's life in Japan which so delighted me as a very young child.I read it now to my two year-old son, who asks questions about "the weather-telling game" that cracked Mako's clogs. The story is character forming, but it's the illustrations that last a lifetime in memory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
These stories are very good in different ways. The thing the reader needs to keep in mind is that the stories aren't supposed to flow or fit together-that's the whole point of the book. So yes, if you try to read them in a row it will seem weird, since every story has a different feel to it. I loved some of the stories, particularly "Eli and the Dybbuk" and Pierce's "Student of Ostriches".I can't guarentee anyone liking it, but if you like that genre and keep an open mind you should like some of the stories, at least. I love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but lacking in certain aspects
This one is more of a 3 1/2 for me, but I rounded it up to 4 because I'm just too picky when it comes to the excitement of a story.
5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring book for young and old!
Since I like to write and read in multi-genres, I particularly enjoyed this collection of short stories. The fact that they were all inspirng--emphasizing the strength and courage of our youth--added to my pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good (Contains spoilers)
This book is the fourth compilation in the series, and has four stories inside (Three of which are new.) The story starts off with book #13 Oops Doggy Dog! In which there is a fierce custody battle over some super cute dogs. In book #14, Bow-Wow-Wow! Chanel is feeling left out from the rest of the group, and startshaving self image problems. Book #15, Bring It On! Is about Dorinda and her friends trying to help Dorinda's brother out of a sticky situation. While book #16 deals with Aqua and Angie feeling isolated from the group when they have to deliver terrible news. Something amazing happens at the end, but I won't spoil that for you. Overall, I really liked this book. There are a lot of pages, because it is four books in one, but once you get into it you realize how fast they go by. Five stars :) ... Read more

As a professional speaker and writer to parents I applaud and highly recommend this book! It's a dialogue between parent and child with naive questions answered and applied by scripture in today's language. When I speak on nurturing a child's spiritual development I ALWAYS recommend "Does God Know How to Tie Shoes?" to my audience. Books that are easy reads are often difficult to write as there's a gift in communicating truth in simplistic ways...Parenting Power in the Early Years, is one of those easy reads and because of my writing experience I can appreciate the skillful writing of "Does God Know How to Tie Shoes?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Three of the four stories are good
This book contains four stories about Chrestomanci. The first one is a bit disapointing as it doesn't contain Chrestomanci at all.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but i expected better.
This book, though one of the best I have ever read, was a huge disappointment to me. The plots were not a gripping as other books Diana Wynne Jones has written. The wonderful unexpected endings, and plot twists in most of her other books simply are not there. I also think that the characters are much harder to relate to. All of the stories would have been better if they were developed more. I would recommend not spending money on this book and buying "The Chronicles of Chrestomanci- Volume 1," or "The Chronicles of Chrestomanci- Volume 2." Unlike this one, these books are better the second, third, or forth time. If your library has this book, don't spend the money. If not, it is good enough to buy just to read once.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Magics
These four tales are in the exact same style as Diana Wynne Jones' earlier Chrestomanci novels. They are light, funny, and have interesting plot twists. Like The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Volume 1 and 2, this book contains stories about the castle in which the mighty sorcerer Chrestomanci lives. This books contains four short stories; Warlock at the Wheel, Stealer of Souls, Carol Oneir's Hundredth Dream, and The Sage of Theare. If you haven't already read the Chronicles of Chrestomanci I would suggest that you do that before reading this book because the stories go in chronological order.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Fans of the Television Show
My daughter is a huge Thomas fan, and she loves all of the Read To Me paperbacks.Because the books tell stories from the television series, we read these books at times when my daughter is asking to watch Thomas, but he isn't on.My daughter loves how the illustrations are actual still photographs from the television series. However, sometimes the photos shown don't really depict what is going on in the story. There are a lot of words in these books, with small print. These are definitely books little kids would not be able to read on their own, but they can enjoy the pictures on their own.It is wonderful how each book is comprised of 3 or 4 short stories that toddlers have no problem holding their attention through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flannel pajamas and hot cocoa are a necessity while reading these toe-tingling tales of holiday romance
WORKING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND (Aimee Friedman) - Maxine "Max" Silver, is your typical New York City gal, who loves shopping during the holiday season, trying on dresses that she'll never be able to afford, and scarfing down hot chocolate and cookies in Rockefeller Center. The strange part is that she doesn't celebrate Christmas, and feels that there is a serious lack of Hanukkah songs available to all of those dreidel-spinning masses. However, her thoughts regarding holiday music instantly go out the window when this college freshman runs into her high school crush, the scrumptious Heath Barton, whose father happens to own Barton's Department Store. Before Max knows what's happening, she's working in the Christmas Corner at Barton's, dressed as a holiday elf, singing Christmas Carols with a Nutcracker Prince, Sugar Plum Fairy, and Santa Claus, while making goo-goo eyes at Heath. But on Christmas Eve, this New York City fashionista finds true love with someone she least expected. 5/5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magical collection!
Eric Carle's gorgeous watercolor collage images are a perfect companion to the mythical poems in this book. Poetry from classic writers such as E.B. Browning, Sato, and Shakespeare comes together with more contemporary work from X.J. Kennedy, Arnold Sundgaard, and others. These are great for reading aloud, though very young children might find the pictures and words just a bit creepy!

2-0 out of 5 stars "companion" to Animals Animals falls FAR short
Animals Animals - a richly illustrated, quality book of poetry - came out in 1989.This one followed in 1991.After reading it, I have the strong feeling that Eric Carle was pressured to do a companion volume and hastily threw this out onto the market. The composition of the artwork is not nearly as strong as his other works; in fact, I would go so far as to say that this is his worst book. The selection of poetry is meager and nearly all of the poems are dismissive of the creatures as silly or non-existent.The subtitle of the book is "& other creatures which never were" which put my hackles up right from the start.I don't think any of us have been around for long enough to judge what is "real".Perhaps this is my Philosophy major talking.Anyway, that coupled with the intro which is William Blake, "O!how I dreamt of things impossible" and the conclusion page which is a quote from A Midsummer Night's Dream regarding the "weak and idle theme"... I cannot think of a more dismissive characterization of the rich legends held by many cultures around the world.I was actually offended by this book and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars To love a poem
This book provides a good start to teaching children to love poems. It contains the one element necessary to every successful poetic verse: transformation and magic.Read more
