4-0 out of 5 stars Eastern stories that have captured the Western imagination!
The Tales from the Arabian Nights are ancient stories of romance, suspense, mystery, magic and adventure originating from Persia, India and Arabia, originally functioning as the daily entertainment of ordinary people. They are woven together under the premise that they saved the life of Shahrazad, a queen whose husband executed each of his new wives after one night of marriage.By beginning an exciting story every evening, but withholding the ending, Shahrazad was able to convince the breathless king to spare her for another day until the next installment.Of course, after 1001 nights of devious story-telling, she had saved her life forever.5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic. "Splish, clomp, pleep, plop, plunk, sloosh, slosh, slink, zing." Who canresist a read-aloud featuring sounds like these? When, "Down by the marsh, bythe sleepy, slimy marsh, one duck gets stuck in the muck," who comes to therescue? Two fish, splishing, for starters. Then three moose clomping, fourcrickets pleeping, and so on. Still, "No luck. Still stuck." It takes a wholelot of teamwork to get this particular stuck duck unstuck from the muck, butthis cheerful bunch is definitely up to the task.Read more

This book is a colorful way to engage students in the language of poetry. The seemingly simple text lends itself well to a variety of literacy activities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Board book not the same as the original
It didn't take long for my 2 1/2 year old son to start saying the words along with me.He loves saying the numbers and " stuck in the muck...".It is written in an amusing and rythmic fashion, so it is easy to read and remember.I originally got the book from the library, and my son loved it so much, I bought it. But, unfortunately, the board book is so abridged, that it leaves out all of the fun word play.Go for the original book.It will be a hit with any kid. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Curious George Had Many Friends
This volume is a convenient way to read the works of H.A. and Margret Rey that aren't about Curious George. Some of the titles are hard to find today. When my now-grown daughters were very young they enjoyed reading about Elizabite and Katie No Pockets. I actually bought this book for my husband who is a collector of Curious George memorabilia. He loves it.

Rey contains eight classic stories by the creators of Curious George. The stories are Curious George,Spotty, Billys Picture, Elizabite, Pretzel, Cecily G And the 9 monkeys, Whiteback Penquin sees the world, and Katy no Pocket. These are all great picture books for young animal lovers in one book. Many of these stories show kids it's okay to be different. 3-0 out of 5 stars That last story is a problem...
This book, which sort of follows the Anne of Green Gables series (and sort of doesn't connect to it) contains the following short stories:
4-0 out of 5 stars 'Sequel' to "Chronicles of Avonlea"
"Further Chronicles of Avonlea," the 'sequel' to "Chronicles of Avonlea," expands upon Avonlea's rich history with 15 additional short stories:1-0 out of 5 stars the stories have aged poorly
The Anne books were among my favorites growing up, and I thought it would be fun to re-read them. Boy, was I wrong! "Aunt Cynthia's Persian Cat" and "The Materializing of Cecil" were both cute, and "The Brother who Failed" had a nice end, but the morals of 1920 are more than a little disturbing now. In "The Education of Betty" a man marries his high school sweetheart's daughter, whom he helped raise from childhood, and in "In Her Selfless Mood" we are expected to sympathize with a woman who throws her life away on her no-account brother. And the less said of the **appallingly** racist "Tannis of the Flats" the better. The stories that are not embarrassingly outdated are sappy little romances. The Little House books retain their charm in a way Avonlea has not. I will not be sharing these chronicles with my children. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Stories that will make you scared
This is a collection of R.L. Stine's spookiest stories. And some of them are really scary. My favorite story that scared me the most was "Losers" because i want to remind the bullies at my school, IF THEY CALL ME A LOSER, THEY'RE GONNA BE HUMILIATED ONE DAY. Because it's a about kids who disrepect other kids, and what happens to them? They become the laughing stock of the carnival.

Editorial Review

"That's what 145th Street is like. Something funny happens... and then something bad happens. It's almost as if the block is reminding itself that life is hard, and you have to take it seriously." Walter Dean Myers's book of interconnected short stories is a sweet and sour mix of the comedy and tragedy of the human condition, played out against the backdrop of the Harlem neighborhood that is centered around 145th Street. In this 'hood, teens will become acquainted with the mysterious 12-year-old Angela, whose sad dreams seem to predict the future for an unlucky few, and the fast-talking Jamie Farrell, a smooth basketball player who's praying that his streak of good luck doesn't end before he can ask out Celia Evora, "the finest chick in the school." They will chuckle at the affable Big Joe, who wants to enjoy his funeral party while he's still alive, yet feel their hearts tighten when Big Time Henson senses his drug addiction drawing him closer and closer to an early grave.Read more

I have been a fan of Vivian Vande Velde ever since I read CURSES, INC. AND OTHER STORIES.I quickly followed that up by reading several of her other books, including NOW YOU SEE IT... and COMPANIONS OF THE NIGHT.Ms. Vande Velde is the master of spooky stories, whether they be contemporary, paranormal, or fantasy. What she's even better at, though, is writing short stories that have a way of staying with you long after you finish reading them.

Mr. Pine makes signs: "stop," "go," "pets for sale," "gas, 33 cents"(this book was first published in 1961), and more. Little Town is, in fact, plastered with the industrious painter's handiwork, ensuring social order in theway that signs do: "Yes, Little Town had all the signs a town could need."However, when the mayor deems it time to replace the aging, sunbaked, windblownsigns, trouble begins. Mr. Pine is pleased to make new signs for the town: "Thenext week Mr. Pine painted and painted and painted." All would have been well ifMr. Pine had not lost his glasses and installed all the new signs in the wrongplaces. The sign on the mayor's door said, "This Way to the Zoo!" The sign overthe bank said "Bread!" Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Counterpoint to Eliot's Four Quartets
H.D.'s "Trilogy" was written about the same time as Eliot's "Four Quartets."
4-0 out of 5 stars The Violence Drove Me Inward
Poems of angels and gems and fragrance and stars, all written on the downward slope of WWII.H.D. praises the life that survives, the mythic returns of Amen-Ra and Christ, which is also the first budding of spring.London joins in these poems with Karnak and St. John's second city, Paradise--a resurrection of "our earth before Adam," that "grain or seed/opened like a flower."Angels and Magi bring their usual good news, but the last word belongs to Mary Magdalene and the goddesses behind her, shifting from Isis to Venus to H.D. herself. The thick web of allusions reads at times like a parody of Modernist excess, but the impulse behind them (and these were written quickly, after a long dry spell) is more inspired than erudite.H.D. improvised a religion of her own that enfolded the War like a shell, tranforming its destruction to a promise of new life."Trilogy" is a quiet testament to her faith in writing as redemption, the poet as witness and priest. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!!!
Charmed is a great TV show and I love the fact that each sister has their own unique story in this book! Although I love Charmed and I am a huge fan of all the sister's, my favorite one is Piper, played by Holly Marie Combs. To me Charmed is not just a show about how three sisters fight demons and warlocks everyday, I watch Charmed because in a very big way, they are just like us, and that is exactly what this book implies.Piper wants to have children and have a normal life with Leo, but with a sister's power's gone awry and with the fact that they are indeed the Charmed Ones, Piper feels like maybe having a baby might make things more difficult.Pheobe and Paige's stories were also very good, I enjoyed the whole book very much and I would definately say that if u love Charmed as much as I do, to go ahead and buy this book, it is well worth the money!!!!

this book really is cool. There are three stories in this book one story for each Halliwel sister. The stories isnt long but all the stories ore episodes together is as long as one ordenery charmed pocket book.I enjoyed this book so much couse i could pick out one story that i liked best and read it in a couple of hours.Phoebes story is about that her body is been taken over by another person who wants to free a demon from a love spell.Piper story is about that she is afreid that her baby (not yet born) whould have problems beeing half witch half whitelighter since paige is orbing around town uncontrolled.paige story is about she tired of all deamon ass kicking and goes on a party that is more demonic than she thought...great book

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, enjoyable, and whimsical read for all ages.
Also available in a paperback edition (1885008255, $6.95), The Magical Monkey King is a retelling of classic Chinese folktales by Ji-Li Jiang. Ideal reading for children ages 7 to 10, and enhanced with black/white drawings by Youshan Tang. The Magical Monkey King tells of the Monkey King's rambunctuous adventures, from his studies with a wise sage to learn the secret of immortality, to taking a job as royal gardner in the Kingdom of Heaven, and his encounter with the great Buddha. Simple yet delightful prose of Monkey King's fantastic exploits make The Magical Monkey King an amazing, enjoyable, and whimsical read for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stuck In Nuetral
Stuck In Neutral is a must read for anyone in any age group. The story is about a boy named Shawn who is 14-years old. Shawn was born with Cerebral Palsy. His dad, Sydney E. McDaniel, left him when he was just a baby. Sidney E. McDaniel wrote a poem about his son a while after he left.He then won a Pulitzer Prize and got really famous. In the beginning of the book Shawn stated that because his dad didn't like that his son has a disorder, that he was going to "end his pain."
3-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
I woudn't recommend this book to anyone because it gets a little redundent. The story is about a boy wh was born with a busted blood vessel in his brain that affected his abiliy to move a single muscle, which takes a real toll on his family. They live in a small tow in seattle, with practicly no father because he is to busy on TV shows and adio shows because of his poetry about his son.So his dad can't take it anymore and he decides to end the boys suffering by killing him.The story is told in the boys eyes and we soon realize that the boy is not really suffering but he cant tell his dad that because of his problem with his brain. And we are the only people who get to see this side, the only peple who get to hear him speak.Read the book to ind out the ending.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Book of Misfits
I first read "Uncovered", the eighth short story collection in Paul Jenning's "Un" series, a couple of months after it came out in the early months of 1996. I was twelve and a half at the time, and had just started high school. I had gone from being reasonably well liked to being a misfit of misfits in the space of those few months, and I used to hide out at the library (among other places) at lunch time. A copy of "Uncovered" caught my eye, so I borrowed it. Took me two days to read, and I can say I was pretty disappointed with it at the time. Some parts I found depressing, while other parts didn't grab me at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute! not entire collection cataloged but still good buy
As previous reviewers stated, this book does not have "everything" that's ever been Hello Kittied but still it's okay and a nice coffee table piece. My guests always reach for it when they wait for me on my couch and they enjoy looking at the cute pictures and are surprised to learn all the paraphenilia created by Sanrio. So it's quite entertaining and my friends and I have looked through it more than once even though we are not hardcore HK devotees. I did learn something about Hello Kitty's origins in the first few pages and the names of her friends so it's not a total loss. The items in the book need more organization - some are arbitrarily placed and there's no real sense of chronology in terms of dates (the years of the items emergence are all mixed up). The pages are nicely laid out but it did leave a feeling of wanting to see "more" from the collection because there are things I own that are HK that are not in the book. They can't include everything so maybe the name should be changed to "Hello Kitty Hello Something" lol. Nevertheless, it's really cute and eye catching and entertaining for guests (mostly female) and I'm happy to own it.

4-0 out of 5 stars hello kitty, hello (not quite) everything
While i would love to see an all-encompassing book detailing *everything* in the evolution of kitty, this isn't a bad place to start. It's really more of a novelty book, but I for one, was surprised to learn that there's even a dang HK vespa! and now i can not rest until it's mine.3-0 out of 5 stars Not for serious Sanrio fans
I got this book as a gift, and was glad that I didn't pay for it. It's got some content, but most of it is just "fluff" for tha hardcore Sanrio fan. It has lots of pictures, including some vintage (that's my favorite Sanrio item(s) to collect). This theme has a lot of potential, and I hope someone makes a more definitive Sanrio "history" book, with more characters & information. I'm working on my own Sanrio history & such for my site ...that will have more of a history of the Sanrio Company. It was a good attempt, but could have been better if written by a more hardcore Sanrio fan. ... Read more

Editorial Review

A library card is a kind of magic ticket: a passport to places distant--unknown--even forbidden. In his latest offering, Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli takes that idea and spins it until the story, its characters, and all of us are dizzy, and offers it as a prize to young readers up for the ride. 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Check This Out With YOUR Library Card
Here is what I have to say about this book. I had to read it for school. And it was TERRIBLE!!! This book is plotless, useless, boring, weird, and most of all, tacky. How many books have you read that constantly mention libraries? I just did. It mentions it in every story, which gets QUITE repititive after a while. Plus, also some of the characters in this book have the weirdest names in history. For example, there is a guy in this book named Mongoose! That sounds odder than most names, (no offense to the people with unique names out there.) My advice, there is an invisible warning label on this book saying "THIS IS ONE OF JERRY SPINELLI'S FLOPS!" If you think this book is useless, great. But if you want to read it anyway, don't say the guy with the one-star review didn't warn you! So be careful. Until next time....

5-0 out of 5 stars Another hit from Aliki
I love the Let's Read and Find Out science series, and Aliki is one of my family's favorite authors, so this book is a real winner for us.Clearly written text and lovely illustrations make for an enjoyable read-aloud for K-2 level students, or an informative read-alone book for older kids or early readers.

4-0 out of 5 stars A review of the record of fossils for children Ages 5 and up
Fossils tell of long ago is a good book for children.Brightly illustrated pictures help them grasp the facts of fossils. It includes a fun experiment, too, along with a clear explanation of how fossils were made.I give this book four stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Aliki's blatant attempt at political correctness.
While this book is still a decent introduction to fossils for children, I'm giving it two stars because it is a VERY different book from the original (published in 1972, I believe) that I read and loved as a child. Ipurchased this version thinking it would be the same as the original(except for the different cover and perhaps some updates to the informationtherein). Well, I was wrong. ALL of the illustrations have changed (NOT forthe better, either, in my opinion). There are now children of every huepictured, and even a black boy in a wheel chair. How nice. This is what allchildren's books of the future will look like, apparently. (Classicchildren's books that don't include pictures of kids from various ethnicgroups will need to be re-illustrated.) Aliki, why did you mess with aperfectly good original?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars lazyreaders.com book selection for May 2006
I've recommended Andy Griffiths before (he is not to be confused with a certain sheriff from Mayberry), but I feel like I should include this book for parents of fourth-sixth grade boys who have no interest in reading. I read this book to boys who have never opened a book voluntarily, and I discover the boys weeks later have memorized pages! Yes, this book is not going to win any literary awards, but if it gets a boy into reading there is a greater chance that that boy will try to read a book that has won a literary award. I highly recommend this book for teachers and parents who have reluctant readers, especially boys. To find this book and other cool short book recommendations, go to [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars Matthew's review
I liked Just Disgusting because the first chapter was 101 disgusting things. And the 100th was the funniest of them all.It was completely disgusting. This book is about a bunch of disgusting and funny stories. One of the stories was about somebody not wanting to eat brussel sprouts. He tried to hide it under his chicken bones but his mother saw him. Then he tried to go to the bathroom but his sister said that he was just going to throw it out, so he accidentally ate it.It was a funny story.I would recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars He actually enjoys reading this book!
My nine year old nephew would rather do anything other than read. This is one book he actually enjoys reading. When we do our daily reading he watches the clock. This book is so disgusting he can't put it down. He even reads this one by himself when he thinks no one is watching. So if you are looking for a book to hold a boys attention this is the one! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars In a town of fools, how can there be wise men?
This is a fun book. The ten stories that are included in the book are amusing and easy to read in a way that is very attractive to children. The stories of Chelm have not failed to get a laugh (sometimes a little giggle and sometimes something more) each time that we have read them. However, the book goes one step beyond the stories themselves. Every story is followed by 3-4 questions that you can ask your children after reading the story. The questions can be helpful in prodding your child to think about some of the deeper meanings behind the story as well as to measure their understanding of what makes the people of Chelm foolish yet, ultimately, wise in their simple ways. This book is a keeper.
