Editorial Review

Do you know how the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River were first formed? How about the Great Plains and the Grand Canyon? Some people think these wonders were established by the forces of nature, but those folks clearly haven't heard of Paul Bunyan, the "strongest, smartest, and tallest hero of the tallest of American tall tales." Paul and his pal, Babe the Blue Ox, were responsible for creating all these geographic features as they worked their way west with their unusual lumber crew. Paul's adventures begin when he is just a baby (who can lift a cow over his head) and continue as he grows into the biggest lumberjack in the world. All the basic stories about Paul Bunyan are here in this rollicking tale, as well as a few inventive incidents added by author and illustrator Steven Kellogg. Saccharine cotton candy.About the only "real" thing left from the folk tales is Babe being found during a blue snow and staying blue. My grandkids' great great grandparents came from a logging past.Am I going to use this book to introduce them to heir own history?Absolutely not.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures for a Great Story!

Paul Bunyan gets raced in the Wild West fighting through anything that gets in his way.So watch out and dont run into him because he'll knock you off your feet!

4-0 out of 5 stars my treasure
I bought this book as a child from a scholastic book order and I absolutely loved it. I got so mad at my sister when I let her borrow it and she spilled water on it. I love how all the different cultural illustrations were drawn by the same artist. I'm in college now, and it's just a fun and simple read. I don't own any other mermaid books yet but I really love this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mermaids in a different light.....
This wonderful book written by Mary Pope Osbourne puts memaids into a different light. Most of us (I think) view mermaids as fantastically beautiful kind and caring creatures. Although most of the mermaids in this book are depicted as being beautiful they can be very scarey as well.My daughter who will soon be eight described this book as, "Neat, but a little scarey."It was very interesting to read the stories from different countries. These mermaids are very different than the one portrayed in the Disney film.It is refreshing to read about mermaids in a cultural interpretation. 5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible book for all mermaid lovers
i'm 15 years old and have always loved mermaids. My favorite movie is Disney's The Little Mermaid, and i am always interested in any books i come across about them. i came across this book in 6th grade. it was my teacher's book, but i stole it for the entire year! i read it over and over again, i was mesmerized by the stories and pictures. most of the stories i havnt even heard before. i was so sad when i had to give it back, but just now, 3 years later, i found it on this website! i ordered it right away and couldn't be happier. i reccomend this book to anyone that has a facsination with mermaids. this book is truly wonderful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Read!!!!
Bleedis a creatively written novel that explores the lives of ten characters over the course of one day. Each chapter is dedicated to a teenager and the reader gets a brief glimpse into their life. The entire novel reads alomost like a collection of short stories whose characters' lives intersect in unforseeable and unexpected ways. For example, Nicole is in love with her best friend Kelly's boyfriend.Kelly is out of town visiting her father and is about to meet the convicted felon she's been writing to for several years.Maria has issues with self-mutilation and constantly tries to persuade her friends to cut her with pins.Sean cheats on his girlfriend with somebody he never would have expected.Stolarz expertly weaves a combination of stories the reader will remember for a long while.Laurie Stolarz is currently writing a companion novel to Bleed. You can bet this reader will be first in line to devour this forthcoming title.
2-0 out of 5 stars Quantity not Quality
I teach YA lit. classes, so I am not new to the genre and I have the utmost respect for authors like Sarah Dessen who are able to create realistic teen fiction.I had high hopes for Bleed since I had read good things about it on several blogs, but the book did not deliver. Its ten interwoven stories are quick and entertaining, but I found the characters rather unbelievable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Over The Wall Book Review
Hi my name is Max Mordini and I just got done reading Over the wall. One thing I have to say is that John H. Ritter is the bestauthor ever. I read The Boy Who Saved Baseball about 2 months ago and I loved that one so much that I went off and bought Over The Wall. Over The Wall is even better than the boy who saved baseball i just could not stop reading this book. Now I will tell you a brief summary of the book. It all starts off in California were a boy named Tyler Waltern lives. This summer Tyler is going to take a plane up to New York City and spend it there with his cousins and play baseball with Louie (his cousin). He arrives in New York and greets his cousins. Soon enough it was the day of there first baseball game. Tyler plays shortstop and is very good. The game is all tied up and Tyler is on second and he is the winning run. His teammate hit a clean single and Tyler thought he had a chance to be the hero and break for home so he did. He rounded third and was on his way home. He took a huge head first slide into home and he touched the plate just barely with his hand and was in front of the through. After he touched home he was tagged by the catcher Tyler was jumping and cheeringIve won the game he thought to himself but then he heard the umpire yell your out he never touched home. Tyler was astonished and he put up an argument right away. Eventually he was thrown out of the game and they lost. Then the same exact thing happened again in there 3rd game and out of anger tyler yelled I quit. He couldn't believe what he just said but he couldnt take it back now. After this Tyler is miserable and doesn't know what to do but he had to play so he went back to the ball fields and found the commissioner of the baseball league. He begged to be letback in. He said "Only if I can see that your behavior and sportsmanship have changed" and tyler was let back in the league. Believe it or not baseball is only one half of the book. Now I will tell you about the other half of the book (Vietnam War). Tyler's grandpa fought in the Vietnam war as a pilot and was shot down and killed. This is another reason that tyler went to New York, so he could see the wall with his grandpas name on it in Washington D.C. Before he went to see the wall he read a couple booksabout vietnam. After reading and looking at the books it made tyler think a little and it made him feel bad about the vietnamese people who died that weren't even in the war like little kids and grandparents. it also made him sad thinking about that there were 3 million people who died on the other side and there was no wall mentioning any of them so Tyler decides to make a monument for the vietmanese. This is my summary of the book and I hope you will read it. I would recommend this book to boys because you have to be a boy to understand and feel like your in the book ( this is why i loved it so much.) I would recomend the book to ages 10 through 14. It would be a good book for older kids to read during the summer for fun. Anyway This book was a great book and you should read it whenever you get the chance. Also this book was the first book I ever laughed at or got butterflies in my stomach when I was reading. The book is AWESOME!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of the tale of tyler
The book is about a13 year old boy named Tyler. He lives in California but in the summer he goesto New York to play baseball. When he is there he loses his tempera lot, one day the coach pulled him aside and told him to cut it out, stop being so mad! Then he went home and just froze and decideed that since they(his family) were going to washington monument to pay thier respects to thier family he would read a book on the vitetnam war.He decides to make a memorial for the Vietnamese people that died, and then it is all star day will he make the team or will tyler strike out on the opportunity to???

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Kids in the Snow
Shirley Neitzel wrote a book called The Jacket I Wear In The Snow. The main character of the story is a little boy who tells a story. This story takes place at the little boy's house and it is in the winter. The book talks about the little boy and all the clothes that he has to wear outside. This book is different because it talks about clothes and replaces words with pictures of clothes, and it is in poem form.I think that the story is funny because it rhymes a lot.The illustrations are just like normal clothes, with a very nice tint drawn in with colored pencils.Overall, I really liked this story because it represents little kids and how they have to wear a lot of clothes outside, and that they cry sometimes when they get cold.

4-0 out of 5 stars book fan from oklahoma
This book is excellent for children.Through all of the articles of clothing that he puts on, they can begin to count, a good math lesson. They can also participate while you read the story aloud through the pictures of the clothes instead of the word. I loved this book and am adding it to my collection. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Slow But Very Interesting
This was a slow but very interesting book. A book combined with short stories bye many different authors. Lots of these stories were good and a lot were slow. Some were just sort of I didn't even know what was going on. One thing good about this book was the emotions I felt when reading it. I felt so many different emotions such as surprised, sort of creeped out, very glad and extremely sad. This book has taught me some very important life lessons though. Some of those are to stand up for my rights. Also to not judge anyone and to talk to them first to get to know them. My favorite story in this book was the Prom Prize by Walter Dean Myers. It was about an African American boy named Fly Williams. His friends thought it was funny if they ran a contest where girls put there names into a box and whatever name they drew Fly would have to go with her to the prom. It's a good story about teen pressure and what to do if you do get pressured. All together this is a really moving book and might help you in everyday life. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Parents will be quick to jump to the conclusion that there can benothing appealing in a tale of an ugly kid who breaks things. And certainly--from that adult perspective--there's something off-putting about the illustrations of David, with his potato head, feral eyes, and a maniacal grin that exposes ferociously pointed teeth. But 3- and 4-year-olds see things differently, and will find his relentless badness both funny and liberating."No, David," wails the off-stage mother, as David reaches for the cookie jar. "No! No! No!" as he makes a swamp out of the bathroom. "Come back here, David!" as he runs naked down the street. Each vivid double-page illustration is devoted to a different youthful indiscretion and a different vain parental plea. Readers will be amused to know that the protagonist's name is no accident: award-winning writer-illustrator David Shannon wrote the book after discovering a similar effort that he had made, again with himself at the center of each drawing, at the age of 5. 5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, David, I love you
I don't know why my sixteen-month old daugter loves this book.Perhaps it's the repetition, or illustrations, or the emphasis with which the phrases are read.I DO know that she now has an insatiable interest in books, uses the word 'no' appropriately, and anticipates the resolution at the end of this and "David Gets in Trouble."
5-0 out of 5 stars It makes my kids laugh with delight, that makes it a five for me
Some reviewers take this stuff way too seriously! The book is hilarious, my kids giggle everytime they read it.And, my three year old can read it, which makes her feel great.David isn't evil, I don't see him portrayed as evil, and if he is, my kids are evil also because lord knows they have done almost everything in there themselves, the lesson is that we love and adore our kids even if they are misbehaving!

5-0 out of 5 stars kids LOVE it
I didn't really get this book at first since there is little writing and just these big, somewhat scary illustrations.Just goes to show you that children's books are FOR CHILDREN, because my kids, 4 and 2, LOVE David. They scream and giggle when they see the bad things he's doing, and throughout the day they will "remind" themselves not to do something "bad like David."They can look at the illustrations and create whole stories out of one page.I think that is what the beauty of the book is truly about. As I started reading it with them, I became charmed by the crude, simple drawings, and just how expressive David is, even though he's not more than a stick figure. The first time we read it, I just read the words on each page.I had to explain one or two pictures, but they completely got the ending themselves. The very next time, I asked them what they thought was going on in each picture and they went crazy telling me all about the things David was doing, and why that's not allowed and what he should be doing instead! They truly never tire of this story, and I wouldn't have guessed that at all when I first picked this title up.Contrary to what some other reviewers said, David doesn't inspire bad behavior or copycat actions. That's the whole point of reading it with them.I don't think some of the other books in the series are as inspired as this first one, but that may just be because I was spoiled by how much we all love this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
Parents and kids alike will enjoy these very funny stories for beginning readers. My kindergartener and I laughed so hard, especially during the sheep story. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful animal stories for school-age readers.
If you love James Marshall's "George and Martha" stories but your child is outgrowing them, you can find similar humor in chapter book style in "Rats on the Roof."The stories are all about animals and their goofy dilemmas. There is a sheep who gets into big trouble by pretending to read when he can't (he thinks a "DANGER - Beware of Wolves" sign reads "welcome to the pretty green park").And there is an owl who has to defend her tree from a hungry brontosaurus (who said only meat eating dinosaurs are dangerous?)...Marshall's funny illustrations add to the pleasure of the tales."Rats on the Roof" is clean, lighthearted reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb illustrations accompany a story for siblings
This sensitive book describes the feelings of an older sibling and a family when a young child is hospitalized for a severe medical problem. It helps normalize the feelings that a sibling might have, and indicates that adults are available for support. The black and white drawings do a good job of being accurate, but still showing warmth and emotion.5-0 out of 5 stars Kind-hearted, intelligent, and such a delight.
The moving story of Molly's illness and her family's loving, worried response informs children about what a hospitalization means. What's more, it validates the feelings that come when a loved one needs help. Duncanbeautifully evokes the atmosphere of a hospital -- not just the physicalplace but the environment of caring professionals, friends, and familymembers who work together to get someone better. For kids who'veexperienced hospitalizations (their own or others) or who are trying toimagine what things are like at the hospital (whether or not someone theylove is in the hospital now), this book rings equally clear and true.Brava!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
I'm 11 years old, and when my sister was in the hospital my mom bought me this book. It was like reading my own story in a real book! Like Anna, the main character, I felt sad, jealous, worried, and even angry at my sister. This book helped me to understand that other kids felt the same way. I alsoenjoyed the happy ending! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Local News Review
In Local News, each chapter is a different story, where each main character has a different message to tell. Although the messages are pretty clear, some you have to do a little thinking for .It's like each chapter is a mini story.
3-0 out of 5 stars Local News
Recently, I gained the privilege to read a book that was written by Gary Soto. The book that I read was entitled, Local News.Throughout this short book, Gary describes 11 different situations that are common for teenagers growing up in Hispanic neighborhoods.I will give a brief, yet detailed description of five of my favorite stories.3-0 out of 5 stars a good book overall but with an intended audience
I read "Local News" for my college Children's Literature course. The teacher assigned it for the week on multi-cultural literature. The book itself was okay, but I believe it has a limited audience.Gary Soto wrote the book for two purposes. One was to show everyone thatMexican-American children are really no different than any other children. The second was to provide Mexican-American children with literature thatcontained Mexican-American characters, kids that they felt they couldrelate to.So, in that aspect, it was a good book.I would highlyrecommend it to anyone specifically looking for Mexican-American charactersor for any parents or teachers looking to teach their children and studentsabout kids in other cultures and to broaden their horizons. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 7 stories, 35 stars!
(this is written by my 12 yr old daughter)
5-0 out of 5 stars If you like short stories, you'll love this book!
Written in the signature Avi methond, this book is about lots of subjects.3-0 out of 5 stars What a weird book
This book is not very good. It is an easy book, for like 5th graders, Avi is ok, but not one of his best books. The short stories a weird and I don't really like them. Some of them made no sense and wasn't fun to read. In some of them were very suspenseful, and I didn't want to put it down. I am not sure if he made all of these short stories up, since I remebered from so where else. The title is a very weird name for a novel about a lot of short stories. From a book reader that wasn't pleased. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely imaginative book-
I love Isabel Wyatt's books. She writes fairy tales, not PC versions of those we grew up with, nor gory, horrible ones, but tales from her own imagination. Each of these tales involes a Fairy Prince, but all are different. She doesn't tend to have them rescuing princesses like in traditional fairy tales- oh no, the gender roles are better than that. When a princess is involved, she is strong and capable, and has an talent the prince needs. Bad things do happen, but not gory pointless, bad things. These are the fairy tales of dreams, not nightmares. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A really cool book that appeals to kids of all ages ... even this grandmother!
Everyone tells me I'm just an overgrown kid ... and when it comes to children's books, how right they are!And when I find one I think is a clever idea with the added bonus of fun, lyrical verse AND fabulous artwork, I'm as giggly as any three-year-old.

My 2-year old daughter begs for this book. She has the words mostly memorized. It is a wonderful lesson in a number of ways, and also delightful to read. I am still not tired of it. After checking it out from the library 5 times, and paying late-return fees, I decided we must own it. ... Read more
