4-0 out of 5 stars Young Readers and THE WHIPPING BOY
THE WHIPPING BOY is a classic children's story, written at a level that second or third grade skilled readers can handle. It moves along quickly.Flieschman uses good word choices. It provides an excellent opportunity for young readers to apply text-to-self and inference skills. It deserves the Newbery Medal which it earned.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Whipping Boy
In this book Prince Brat is a boy who cannot write or read.Jemmy is the whipping boy who gets the whippings when Prince Brat is misbehaving.Jemmy, who is also called Jemmy of the streets, is given this name by the father of Prince Brat.Prince Brat's father also gives him clothes and plenty of food, and a good home. One day Jemmy plans to run away. When Prince Brat finds out he asks to join him.So then they ran away but end up being held for ransom.I think this book needs a little reality. It is perfect for younger children (like 3-5th grades.)I thought it was not very good because it did not make sense. It needed more details on the characters and the setting. It did not hold my attention and I think it could have been better, and that's why I rate it two stars.

Editorial Review

As a child in 1950s Czechoslovakia, Caldecott Honor-winning artist Peter Sís would listen to mysterious tales of Tibet, "the roof of the world." The narrator, oddly enough, was his father--a documentary filmmaker who had been separated from his crew, caught in a blizzard, and (according to him, anyway) nursed back to health by gentle Yetis. Young Sís learned of a beautiful land of miracles and monks beset by a hostile China; of the 14th Dalai Lama, a "Boy-God-King"; and of "a magic palace with a thousand rooms--a room for every emotion and heart's desire." Hearing these accounts--some extravagant but all moving--helped the boy recover from an accident. The stories also allowed Sís's father to relate an odyssey other adults didn't seem to want to know about in cold war Czechoslovakia. "He told me, over and over again, his magical stories of Tibet, for that is where he had been. And I believed everything he said," Sís recalls. Still, after some time he too seemed to become immune, and the stories "faded to a hazy dream." With Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars (A) Free Tibet
I once had the great good fortune of seeing Peter Sis speak before a large audience of New York City Public Librarians.Charming, blessed with an uncommon eloquence, and funny as well Sis spoke of his work over the last few decades. From this speech I learned that Sis designed the poster for the movie of "Amadeus", that he was originally from Prague, and that one of his best works was something called, "Tibet: Through the Red Box".I was intrigued, but months passed and I filed away "Tibet" into my To-Be-Read pile of picture books. It was only with my steady reading of every single Caldecott Honor (of which "Tibet" won one in 1999) that I at last came to the book itself.I expected a title that was some sort of early-reader-this-is-what-Tibet-is kind of a thing.I had apparently forgotten that this was the man who brought us that remarkable Charles Darwin biography, "Tree of Life"."Tibet: Through the Red Box" is no mere picture book. It's a personal history and unreliable memory combined into the ultimate tribute to the author's father.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book
I first encountered this book in my elementary school library and have since looked it up again. At the time it struck me as magical and wonderfully illustrated, and now (years later) I can appreciate its historical signifigance as well as its obvious visual appeal

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for my children and my children's children
My children are mostly grown; and today, when we remember growing up "together", we sometimes talk about books that they (we) loved when they were young. This is one such book, published just in time to share with my youngest, who was ten at the time. The story is mysterious and complex and involves simple spiritual discoveries made by the artist's father when he was lost in Tibet. The rich, delicate artwork and thoughtful reflections are layered and you can return to the book over and over and find new ideas, beautiful images, magical details . This book will feed the spirit of a thoughtful child and remain with them as they grow. My daughter and I treasure this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful book
This is a beautiful book! It gives you a vivid picture of Charles Darwin's life. Very enjoyable -- my son and I both got to know Darwin well from this book! I'm inspired to read all those books Darwin wrote.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem
This is a wonderful book. Great illustrations with much detail about Darwin's life (all of it, family, career, adventures) including "pages" from his diary. I bought it for my son who really liked it. We read it together the first time, then he explored it on his own. He used it for a 4th grade school project and got an A. I enjoyed it, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars To life!
If you are at all familiar with Peter Sis, then you linger under the incorrect impression that you know what to expect from him.Carefully researched subjects.Illustrations containing infinitesimally small people, places, and things.Engaging and entertaining plots.I tell you now, ladies and gents, "Tree of Life" takes all of this and multiplies it.Quadruples it.You have never seen a picture book like this before. When you are dealing with a book that cares to discuss the origins of life itself, you need an author/illustrator comfortable with details. In this, Sis is your man.Read more

"If you don't believe in dragons, / It is curiously true / That the dragons you disparage / Choose to not to believe in you," matter-of-factly claims America's premiere children's poet Jack Prelutsky. Dragons aren't all the same, of course--some are amiable, some are disconsolate, and some are downright nasty. Here Prelutsky, who has written over 30 books of poetry for children, turns his considerable talents to the subject of dragons--a secret dragon, a thunder dragon, a mechanical dragon, even a lazy dragon who likes to sleep all day. The 17 poems range from the whimsical to the scary, but all reflect Prelutsky's incomparable flair for rhythm and humor. The fabulous fire-breathers are illustrated in all their irresistible splendor by award-winning artist Peter Sis. The sophisticated style of his large oil paintings is complemented by his trademark borders in antique gold, giving the pages an Old World look. If you don't believe in dragons then you need this book, because the magical combination of art and poetry will make you and your kids believers. If you listen closely, you might even hear the dragons singing tonight: "We are dragons! We are real!" (Click to see a sample spread. Text © 1993 by Jack Prelutsky. Illustrations © 1993 by Peter Sis. 4-0 out of 5 stars A world with a mind of its own!!!
This book is anything but traditional. Scranimals by Jack Prelutsky is a book that allows its readers to be silly. A book of poetry that describes different mythical creatures that live on "Scranimal Island". I think this book is especially good for the present day kid because a child is constantly forced to conform in everyday life; conform to rules, chores, school work, etc. This book goes outside the box and challenges there imaginations with animals that are clearly a fantasy, but they enter this world of make believe and can leave the compliance behind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fun poems that spark the imagination
I have to admit that I was not at first impressed with this book. I did not care for the illustrations at first glance, and they are still not my favorites, but I have come to appreciate them. Prelutsky's imagination, however, is always wonderful. My kids both enjoy this book, and we get a kick out of trying to think up other creatures that could live on Scranimal Island. Prelutsky is one of our favorites and this collection does not disappoint. It's lots of fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for boys and girls of all ages
What a fun book! The concept is that there is a magical island where the animals are magical combinations of vegetables (or fruits) and animals (e.g., the Mangorilla).

"In the universe, on a planet, on a continent, in a country, in a city,on a block, in a house, in a window, in the rain, a little girl named Madlenkafinds out her tooth wiggles." To further illustrate where exactly this girl fitsinto the universe, Peter Sís's endpapers depict a tiny blue planet Earthwith a red dot, then a bigger Earth and a bigger red dot, then an aerial view ofthe south part of Manhattan Island, then city blocks, then lo! a small Madlenkain an apartment window. 4-0 out of 5 stars From the universe to one NYC block.
My pre-school aged daughters were big fans of the Madlenka shorts on Sesame Street, so I bought them this book which they love equally as much. It's a story about a little girl living in New York City who takes a trip around her city block to tell her neighbors and friends about her loose tooth.Being the big city, there is a multi-ethnic mix of people like the baker who is French, the Indian newspaper vendor and the Latino grocer, etc. With each neighbor Madlenka encounters we all get a glimpse into their countries of origin through their stories and more importantly Peter Sis's impressive illustrations.Through die-cut views through windows that open up into larger, beautiful scenes. My daughters like the way the words in the story curl around the pages and the cute blonde Madlenka in her lavender boots with whom they can identify. It's really a treat for me to show my suburban kids that there is an exciting international life going on in the city and to be able to introduce them to different cultures. The whole idea that this great big world can be broken down into a small city block with so much diversity is fabulous - especially when it's in a book sized just right for bedtime read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Can't bring myself to give it 5 stars
I can't get over the fact that all the people Madlenka meets are identified with their specific cultures and nations of origin -- except for the Asian shopkeeper and the Latin American grocer. It reinforces the stereotype of"All Asians (or Latinos) are the same" -- Sis would never say that about Europeans! This to me is a huge flaw, and I can't believe an editor would let it slide (I'm a children's book editor myself). It's really too bad because otherwise it would be a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Around the world in an afternoon...!
Two of kids' most exciting themes -- loose teeth and international travel! -- are delightfully captured in this sophisticated book by Peter Sis.Madlenka's tooth sends her on a journey through her multi-cultural neighbourhood, visiting shopkeeper friends from Asia, France, Latin America, and beyond.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the naysayer in the group!
This IS a classic book. Perhaps it doesn't have any 'modern twists' but for those of us who read the book and have reread it ever since, the book indeed "stays" with you (as a previous reviewer stated), and will forever be enmeshed in my memory! Stay away from the naysayer's review, and enjoy the book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wicked Wicked Ladies in the Haunted House
I first read this book in 1968 when I purchased it at school through Weekly Reader Book Club. I must have read the book twenty times or more. It was my favorite. Over the years I have forgotten the title but never the story, the mean little girl that climbed in the boarded up house and saw the seven pictures of seven sisters. I found this book by doing an inside book search and am so happy to have found it still in print. Now I can buy copies for my grand-daughters to read when they get older!

3-0 out of 5 stars A chilling tale of ... pigeons
In 1988, when I was attending the fourth grade, our teacher (name long since forgotten) began reading us a story that has stuck in my mind ever since.Over the years I remembered odd snippets of the story. The old abandoned house. The portraits of beautiful women that moved. The shoe repairing leprechaun in the garden. It was only recently that I decided to track down this story and reread it for myself. You see, my fourth grade teacher never finished "The Wicked Pigeon Ladies In the Garden" (since renamed "The Wicked Wicked Ladies In the Haunted House") and, when last heard from, the heroine of the story was in dire straights.Read more

The story of Galileo is at once inspiring and troubling. The brilliant astronomer was a celebrated scientist who was showered with honors and patronage until his greatest discovery--that the earth circled the sun rather than the other way around--proved to be too much of a threat to prevailing orthodoxy. 3-0 out of 5 stars Would you like to swing on a star?Carry a moonbeam home in a jar?
I've reviewed a fair amount of Peter Sis books in my day on Amazon.com, but this is the first book by Sis that I've come across that has so many negative/tepid reviews. Now, before I review a book I give its Amazon.com page a once-over to get a feel for what the public at large thinks about the story.Peter Sis is one of those authors who can write extraordinarily simple books for little children (like "Komodo", "Madlenka", or "Fire Truck") then turn around and do mind-bendingly complex picture books in the same breath (like, "Tibet: Through the Red Box", and "Tree of Life")."Starry Messenger" was one of Sis' first forays into this combination of complex and simplistic together. As you can see, it wasn't wholly successful.Though still a visually eye-popping wonder and a tale that makes equal concessions to both young and old readers, the story sacrifices fact for simplification in ways that not everyone will enjoy.I believe that while this book is a necessary addition to any Galileo collection, it should certainly not be the ONLY book on that starry-eyed scientist available to your children. 3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Innaccurate
This absolutely stunning book is simple, difficult and innaccurate.Sounds contradictory? It is.
1-0 out of 5 stars Over simplified
The story of Galileo is much more complicated than just being a "heretic".In order to understand the full complications of the story, one would have to understand that the problem was not Galileo against the Bible, but Galileo against Hellenized Christianity-- Aristotle and Plato; the creeds of the church fathers, i.e. the Apologists, etc.; in other words orthodox Christianity which had come under the domination of Greek Philosophy. What Galileo was arguing against was NOT in the Bible, it was Catholic Church doctrine mixed with Greek Philosophy (the metaphysics of Aristotle and Plato) which is still prevalent in some fundamentalist Protestant sects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and exciting book!
I read this to my third grade class and it really helps their critical thinking skills. The stories are so fun and sometimes I am stumped!

5-0 out of 5 stars Logic outside the box - pure fun
This sequel is worthy of its predecessor; it too consists of folktales, very concisely told, that in some sense are a riddle, a puzzle, a play onwords ...These stories are presented as problems to solve.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mystery, Action, and Magic all in one story
I read this book for a college class I am taking.Overall, this is a good book. The action moves at a quick enough pace to hold the reader's attention.I think the combination of a young orphan over coming greatodds and outwitting adults, a mystery to be solved, and a mysteriousmagician will appeal to young readers.I would recommend this book to any8 to 12 year old boy or girl. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kids love to hear these poems!
These poems are clever and fun to hear. The illustrations bring the words to life.My kids ask me to read these over and over again.(Fun for parents too.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry of the grotesque
This is a very handsome book in which the author and the illustrator have collaborated with remarkable skill. The verse is always amusing but cangive a young reader some pleasant shivers. The array of grotesquecreatures - gremlins, goblins, basilisks, gargoyles, headless ghosts - ispresented most fascinatingly by the very brilliant artist, while the authorgives the faintly sinister but always poetic nature of the pictures afrequent dimension of humour. My seven-year-old granddaughter fellimmediately in love with the book which I greatly enjoyed reading out toher, but her ten-year-old brother and twelve-year-old sister were just astaken with it. In fact her elder brother and sister could appreciate rathermore than she did how witty some of the verse is. Certainly a book I canrecommend unreservedly to all lovers of books - young and old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Monsters have feelings too!
I purchased this book for my almost-three-year old whom adores a gargoyle statue I own.On first reading, the monsters frightened her. However, she quickly picked up on the humor and emotions in the poems. She delights inthe poems now and is less afraid of monsters.I would suggest that parentsuse a lot of goofy humor & voice fluctuations when reading the stories.Young children with a fear of monsters or an undeveloped sense of humor mayneed to grow into this book. Also, there are only 3 gargoyle poems, thebalance are werewolf, vampire, gobblins, and boogeyman poems. This is nowmy daughter's favorite goodnight book..and no nightmares! ... Read more

This board book opens the door to imagination and to the learning of colors as it progresses from simple line drawings to more colorful presentations of ballerinas in elaborate costumes. A girl in a white leotard dances swan lake, etc. A last fold-out page presents all the colors and the positive idea that the young girl is the best ballerina. Sweet and simple. ... Read more
