5-0 out of 5 stars KY Craft is an artistic genious
I have long been a fan of ms. Crafts illustrations. They are breathtakingly beautiful from a distance, and full of interesting and fantastic details upon closer examination. This book is no exception, and takes the classic story of the enchanted Princess Aurora, setting the tale in a romantic fantasy kingdom, with the artwork combining rennaisance, high baroque and modern artistic styles.5-0 out of 5 stars The most beautifully illustrated childrens' book ever
I have four children and a large collection of childrens' books, including some wonderfully illustrated classics. However, this book has the most beautiful illustrations I've ever seen.I am a fan of Kinuko Craft's other books, but this one truly oudoes them all.Sleeping Beauty is a wonderful treat for kids, and anyone who appreciates truly beautiful art.Its classic story line and amazing illustrations make it the best bedtime story book I've seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars The exquisite oil and watercolor art of K. Y. Craft
The beginning of Sleeping Beauty reminds me of the classical myths of ancient Greece regarding prophecy: told that their daughter will prick her finger upon a spindle and die when she reaches the age of sixteen, the King and Queen order even spinning wheel in the land to be destroyed. In a classical myth trying to thwart a prophecy never works and sometimes, as in the case of Jocasta, can actually make things much worse. But in this fairy tale the Princess Aurora's fate has already been changed by the wish of the final fairy, so that she will not die, but rather sleep 100 years.Read more

Editorial Review

The story of the beautiful princess who sleeps for a hundred years has captured the imaginations of children for an even longer period of time. How could everyone in a castle--even the flies on the walls--sleep for a century and then wake up? This magical, beautifully illustrated tale begins when the king excludes the most difficult fairy of the kingdom from a feast celebrating the birth of his beautiful daughter Briar Rose. Furious, the fairy storms in and curses the baby, pronouncing that on her fifteenth birthday she will be pricked by a distaff (from a spinning wheel) and fall down dead. The youngest fairy softens the curse to a century-long sleep. Despite the fact that the king burns all the spinning wheels in the kingdom, 15-year-old Briar Rose finds herself in the tower where the evil fairy and her fate await her. The drama of the spell unfurls as she and the other inhabitants of the castle fall instantly asleep, from courtiers to kitchen maids. Thorny briars--moodily captured by Trina Schart Hyman's masterful paintbrush--grow up around the castle. Hyman depicts those who died attempting to break through the maze of thorns to reach the legendary sleeping beauty in a nightmarish illustration. But goodness and true love prevail when the perfect prince does finally find his way through the thick vines.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Illustrations
I had never heard of Trina Schart Hyman, let alone seen any of her illustrations as a child. When I saw the cover of this book however I was just drawn right in, there was no resisting her spell.Based on the traditional Grimms telling of the fairy tale there's nothing new in the plot, the illustrations is what really makes this special though is the illustrations, they're a little dark, but you can tell hours of painstaking detail was put into each picture. So if for no other reason buy this for the illustrations and nothing else, I promise it'll elicit hours of enjoyment looking through each one and seeing a new detail every time you look at each picture.

4-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful yet dark version of the classic fairy tale.
This is a very traditional telling of the Sleeping Beauty story, based on the fairy tale originally written down by the Brothers Grimm. There is no real innovation where the plot is concerned. What makes the book special is its beautiful illustrations. Trina Schart Hyman is a talented artist, and her drawings are a treat to look at. Each page is very nicely laid out, with the text set within the pictures (as opposed to having the text on blank pages and the pictures opposite, as is common). My only reservation is that some of the illustrations are quite dark and oppressive, and may bother very young children. The one that is most disturbing is the picture showing the dead and decaying bodies of Princess Briar Rose's many failed suitors caught in the thorny brambles around the castle. So I'd advise caution with the extremely young, but the book would be great for slightly older children. It is suitable either to be read aloud, or for the kids to read themselves. All in all, a beautiful telling of this classic story.

5-0 out of 5 stars This brings back fond memories!
Trina Schart Hyman entranced me with her illustrations of Snow White when I was just a child. This book, with all its wonderful depictions, is equally as rich and magical.I have always loved the way her drawings looked and she was a direct inspiration for me to take up illustration when I got to college.I definitely reccomend it.It is a lovely, well-written tale and anyone, young or old, will love it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, Terrific Kid's Entertainment
This will keep your kids busy for so many hours.I run a small daycare center and have rarely seen kids so taken as they are with this coloring book.I am not trying to get myself into trouble with the copyright police, but I have to admit I have made copies of a few pages so several children could color on the same picture at once if they wanted to.Even the boys like coloring these pictures, especially the prince and beast characters. We have tied this activity in with watching the Disney DVDs and reading the longer versions of these stories.I would recommend this coloring book to any parent for any age child who likes to color, for hours and hours of fun. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Clever and funny
Sleeping Beauty was always one of my favorite Disney flicks, and my niece loves anything having to do with their princesses, so recently I picked up a copy of this book at Walt Disney World for her. However unlike the previous reviewer I actually have what is called "a sense of humor," and when I read this clever and funny version(s) of the story I had to keep the book for myself; the next day I bought the niece a Disney Princesses t-shirt instead.
1-0 out of 5 stars Just Awful!Sleeping Beauty's Nightmare!
Simply atrocious!!!Let me explain.First off, I'm a huge Disney Sleeping Beauty fan. This version of the tale and its sweet princess grabbed me at a very young age.I'm now an adult and often look back on this enchanting film with great fondness.I'm also an avid Sleeping Beauty collector and have been collecting memorabilia for 2 decades. So, when I saw this book on Amazon I thought "Hey, I don't have this version in my collection!"So I purchased it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful movie with gorgeous animation!
Sleeping Beauty was, of course a good movie for those Disney fans who love the great artist's works. The three good fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather offered a single gift to the newborn princess. But the evil Maleficent crashed the party and cursed Aurora by pricking her finger to the venomous spindle of a spinning wheel and die at her 16th birthday. As a Disney fan, I'm considering that this beautiful young princess will be saved at last by the third of the fairy trio, Merryweather, who had given to her this almost tiny gift: When Aurora pricks her finger into evil witch Maleficent's spinning wheel, she cannot die. Instead of death, the princess will sleeping into a deep slumber until a charming prince wake her with the true love's kiss. So Maleficent turns herself into an evil black fire-breathing dragon to stop Prince Phillip to rescue sleeping Aurora. But the good fairies combine their magic to the mighty Sword of Truth, chanting "Now, Sword of Truth, fly swift and sure. That evil die and good endure!", and the prince throw his magic sword straight as an arrow into the dragon's heart. I'm sure that's a nice movie and I strongly recommend it to all the children beginning from 5 to 12 years old.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nostalgic Classic
This is a beautiful book. It is reminiscent of the images and style of children's books published at the time when Disney originally released SLEEPING BEAUTY. This is a real tribute and a cherished edition to have from one of Disney's best and often overlooked fairy tale classics. It has a real place in my heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walk by faith, not by sight
This is a beautiful book. With Amazon not carrying a picture of it, I was a little afraid to order it, fearing what I might get. I am so pleased with it. The illustrations are very stylized, very 1950's era. The colors are brilliant, even to the endpaper. I love the angles of the characters' faces and shoulders. To get a general idea what the book looks like, check out "Walt Disney's Classic Storybook" and imagine a ten times more beautiful version. Enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a Coloring Book!
This is a nice little version of Disney's Sleeping Beauty, but be aware - it is a coloring book.I thought I was buying a regular paperback Golden Book. Was I surprised! As far as coloring books go, it is a nice one.The story of Sleeping Beauty is told from beginning to end. There is a wide variety of things to color - animals, fairies, people. It's also fun because of the "shape" feature; it's not your usual rectangular book.Unfortunately for me, I wanted a pre-colored book to read to my daughter, but if you are looking for a coloring book, this is a nice one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Exquisite Tale for All Ages
Arthur Rackham not only excelled at creating full color illustrations; he also was an unrivalled master at the art of the silhouette. In this reprinted children's classic, Rackham lavishly illustrates C.S. Evan's intricate retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story with one amazing silhouette after another. One of my favorite illustrations when I was a child was a fabulous two-page cross-section of Sleeping Beauty's palace, including such great details as slumbering cats, doves, scullery maids, the king and queen on their thrones, and of course the princess in her high tower. It never ceases to impress me how much a masterful artist like Rackham could communicate just with beautifully crafted graphic shapes alone- and remember, just because something's not in color, doesn't mean it's not good!Highly recommended! ... Editorial Review

Once upon a time, a princess was born. Her mother, the queen, invited 12fairies to be her godmothers; unfortunately, she forgot to invite the one wickedfairy. Enraged, the nasty little bat-winged fairy placed a curse on theprincess: at age 16 she would prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die.Luckily, the smallest fairy had yet to give the princess her gift, so shepromised that she would not die, but only sleep for 100 years. A century later, along would come the handsome prince to kiss the slumbering princess and wakeher up.Read more

Ms. Gili adapts the classic fairy tale by creating an exquisite book filled with doors to open, windows to peek through, and forests to hack through. The story is very short-which is great for my preschoolers but every page is a treat to explore. The strength of this book is its "very special" appearance. The illustrations are just so beautiful, very classic, very Dresden. We keep this book put on a high shelf to keep little fingers from exploring without parental supervision. It's an heirloom!Any little princess would treasure it. ...
