4-0 out of 5 stars Good for 8-11 year olds
I think this book has a good amount of information in it for kids in the 8 - 11 year old age bracket. They introduce skills and strategies that many novice coaches may not be providing.I wish that some of the skills were illustrated in more detail. For example, just mentioning that you should keep your toe pointed down for an instep kick is not sufficient; it is critical to have the heel locked down.A better illustration would help emphasize points like this.Overall I would very much recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars a GREAT way to kick-off a love of SOCCER.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Shivers cousins have done it again!
The book is truthful, it doesn't cut any corners and shows each team-mate in his true colors. The ups and downs of the team are covered. How these trials are dealt with is what made the team, and this book, excel. Harriers is a must read for any athlete or coach.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jim Enright - author of Flagstaff Hill
Highly recommended for cross-country runners and their coaches.
4-0 out of 5 stars High School Cross-Country Breakout: Memiors of State Champions
This is a true account of cross-country seasons at Salem HS written by two gifted students on the team. This is a participant's view of a team that over the course of two years develops from a very competitive region team to a team that wins State. The book is well detailed on cross-country in the sense that the student authors appropriately make the point that no matter how good the top runners are on a team, and they have several excellent runners, winning a championship depends on where your 5th man finishes. The other nice emphasis, as the authors nicely describe, is how each individual develops in training and in actual races. You get a nice feel for cross-country racing as the authors give a personal perspective on what it is like to prepare for race day, how they determine their race plans (preference for pace or going out with the leaders), the effect of the course terrain and the weather and what it is like on those days that you feel great and those when you know you don't have it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mia Hamm and How She Started
I would recommend this book not only to people who love soccer, but to everyone who enjoys a true story about a great athlete and role model. The story of Mia Hamm is basically about how she was introduced to soccer and how she follows her dream to be the best women's soccer player in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is really better than it looks like!
On teh field with Mia Hamm by Matt Christopher was a very goodbook.I didn't have a very good idea who Mia Hamm really was though. The only thing I know is a professional soccer player.I aw the book and it looked pretty interesting.I'm about a quarter of the way through the book and I'm liking it so far.Usually I don't read books , let alone a whole book. ... Editorial Review

So what if he's legally blind? Even with his bottle-thick, bug-eyed glasses, Paul Fisher can see better than most people. He can see the lies his parents and brother live out, day after day. No one ever listens to Paul, though--until the family moves to Tangerine. In Tangerine, even a blind, geeky, alien freak can become cool. Who knows? Paul might even become a hero! Edward Bloor's debut novel sparkles with wit, authenticity, unexpected plot twists, and heart. The writing is so fine, the story so triumphant, that you just might stand up and shout when you get to the end. Hooray! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tangerine Book Review
This bookis outstanding.it talks about reletionships and tradgedy as well as disabilities and the truth. I gave this book a five star rating because of the apparent time, thought and effort put into the creative text. My absolute favorite part of this book is the very ending because it shows remembrance of a lost freind. I would recommend this book to people with interests such as soccer, and ages 11-14 because of the setting at a Tangerine Middle School and Lake Windsor Middle School.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Ummm...Fantastic!
Tangerine was an "read catching" book. When my language arts class read it I couldn't help but pay attention.
    4-0 out of 5 stars A Student's Review
I think kids from ages 10 and up could read this book. I think this because there is some swearing in it, and this book has kids of this age in it, so it will probly be easier for them to conect with the characters. The author made it clear that she likes to leave her readers on the edge of their chairs, because this book was very mystrious and suspensful. That was the one thing I liked about this book. Over all the book Tangerine was very good! ... Read more

I bought this for my 11 year old because it was one of 5 books on his required reading list for summer vacation. He actually read it and told me what a great book it was. He recommended it to one of his friends and told him that it was a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars S.O.R. LOSER REVIEW
This book S.O.R. Losers by Avi was about a school that is really big on sports and famous for not losing a single game all season. That all changes when some seventh grader non-jocks form a soccer team. Their new team is terrible. Their parents and the school cheer them on and insist that they do better. The crowd's cheers really helped them do a lot better than they were doing. 4-0 out of 5 stars SOR Review

this book is kind of like my live because, in my soccer games i always play left striker but there is one thing that is different that my parent's aren't diborsed so i am cool with that5-0 out of 5 stars Soccer Duel Masterpiece!
This book helps me really relate to my life.I am the left striker, my parents are divorced, but unlike the story it's my mom who usually can't make it to the games because she is blind so she can't drive. It's hard because when I move fromhouse-to-house I have to move equipment too. This situation makes me feel bad because at my dad's house I have two stepsisters and a stepmom and my dad has to drive them everywhere and it sometimes make him feel like a taxi driver! This book is a real situation story and it is probably my favorite book in the series, though I also suggest Soccer Scoop! Ned Donovan. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaches good sportsmanship...
The story is a favorite in our house. It's got cute pictures and a great message about being a good sport. When Mia quits she is made to sit out the next time and she realizes that it's more fun to play then to get upset about the game. It's nice that you don't know if she makes a goal at the end because it doesn't really matter if she does. What matters is that she's being a good sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Running just as fast as she can
Inspirational stories fill hundreds of picture books every year. Most are simply awful. They either tell tales that are loose plots barely supported by facts or they paste together a slapdash concoction of truth and fiction with as little thought as possible. The truly beautiful bio-picture books out there are as rare as hummingbirds in autumn. So it was with great joy that I located "Wilma Unlimited" and found it to be not only inspirational but also a darned good read. Written by Kathleen Krull (the woman who could make long dead musicians fascinating in "Lives of the Musicians" and bring Cesar Chavez to life in the recent "Harvesting Hope") and illustrated by David Diaz the book is the best possible way to introduce kids to one of the world's greatest athletes.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars E is for Educational
This is a great book for younger children - jam packed with soccer facts and information about the history of the game. While some of the words may be difficult for elementary-aged kids, it will certainly "kick start" their desire to learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars An alphabet book for fans of soccer, both young and old
I have to think the idea reader for "K is for Kick: A Soccer Alphabet" is going to be the parent who is having trouble waiting for their kid to be old enough to go out on the soccer field and kick the ball around, let along trying to help the kid learn to read.Author Brad Herzog admittedly creates a two-tier format that has one part targeted on young readers learning the alphabet and the other for more advanced readers who are clearly soccer fans. But I have to think that if a kid is learning his alphabet than the idea that "C is for clubs everywhere" and gives examples of Italy's A.C. Milan and Santos in Brazil, that they probably have little idea as to where to find Italy and Brazil on the map. There are references to age appropriate aspects of the game, such as kicking and youth soccer, but then "N" stands for not only the University of North Carolina's dynasty in women's soccer but number 19, the number that UNC retired in honor of Mia Hamm.Read more

    Editorial Review

As the world watched Brandi Chastain set up for her penalty kick, Michelle Akers lay on a training table beneath the Rose Bowl recovering from her efforts in the Women's World Cup final. She had been given two liters of fluid intravenously but was still woozy and it didn't register, at first, that Chastain had scored and the U.S. team had won. At her insistence, the doctor removed her IVs and she staggered out onto the field to join the celebration. As she stood in the center of the field, the capacity crowd began chanting "Aaa-kers! Aaa-kers! Aaa-kers!"Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars the best athletic bio I ever read!!!!
Michelle Akers is the example of what persitence can do for you in any area of your life. We are taken into her world and shown what the career of an athlete entails. I was presently surprise to not be hit over the head with a sermon of why I should be Christian. In this book metaphors can be drawn and you can take her inspiriation to apply it to your daily life. 5-0 out of 5 stars You're A Good Human, Miss Malarkey!
I bought this book on impulse without expecting much and so was very pleasantly surprised. I've yet to see another picture book that introduces the notion of adult fallibility with such sweetness and humor. Miss Malarkey, stepping in as soccer coach, endures some rather poor behavior from parents, and boy, does she show them!

I have bought all of the Miss Malarkey books for my six year old grandson. We think they're hillereous. This book is the funniest. The soccer parents remind me of my grandson's soccer games and the adults at those games. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Ramblings of an Egomaniac (Mien Kampf for kids)
I wouldn't waste any amount of money buying this book for a child unless I wanted them to grow up to become a Paris Hilton wannabe, who's probably an idol to the author of ths book. The author is one of the biggest egomaniacs on television today.I'm sure she'll be wasting the airtime of the 'Today' show to promote the pile of garbage to the viewing public as much as she likes to tout her 'Exclusive' interviews she manages to obtain. Why the network insists on keeping her as an anchor is beyond me.Her journalism skills are a joke. She needs to get a job with 'Entertainment Tonight' or 'Extra' because she's all about 'shock value' journalism. Just listening to her speak is like listening to a pack of hyenas or wolverines mate.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Million Dollar Kick
Wandering through the library, searching to find an interesting book, one caught my eye. It was the, The Million Dollar Kick. The book starts out in Oklahoma City. Whisper is an ordinary kid who is haunted by a mental picture of a soccer game. One afternoon Whisper took her little sister, who is an athlete, to the mall. Where her sister enters her in a contest. Where if you win you get the chance to win a million dollars by kicking a soccer ball past a famous soccer goalie. She wins, but now she has to learn how to kick a soccer ball. She thought she was toast until Ellie decided to coach her. I thought it was a great book full of action, surprise, and pure interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for four year olds!
My two love this book.It breaks the principles of the game into simplistic steps and basic explanations which are perfect for preschoolers. The bold pictures make the book enjoyable for the boys to "read" to themselves sometimes, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for 4 or 5 year olds.
I was very disappointed when I first looked at this book.It is very basic and hardly seems to provide enough information to be worthwhile. But when I read it to my four year old it solicited a string of questions. So it probably has the about the right amount of information for a very basic introduction to soccer, which is all the intended audience is ready for.Overall I would recommend it. ...
