5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for toddlers
I read this book to my toddler when he started hitting and then reinforcing it by saying hands are not for hitting when ever he would hit.It really worked - he loved doing some of the fun things that hands are good for as we read along.I liked it that it focused on positive things to do with your hands while still enforcing that hitting is not what hands are for.Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
shows many ideas of what hands can be used for and they are not for hitting.

2-0 out of 5 stars It depend on what you are looking for .....
This is a great book, if you want your child to think of all kinds of great things you can do with your hands.

5-0 out of 5 stars PRETTIES
This book is just as exceptional as its predecessor, with thought-stirring ideas and perfectly placed plot twists to keep you reading until the last page is done. Now that Tally Youngblood is a pretty, she is living the high life with an avalanche of parties to attend; the hardest decision on her mind is what to wear to a costume party. Then a mysteriously familiar person gives her directions to a pouch containing something seemingly important. It takes all the wit her fuzzily pretty mind can manage to get it. When she does, she finds a letter written to herself from back when she was ugly. Along with it, she finds the cure described to her while with Maddy and David. In a last second decision, she and her newly-found boyfriend Zane split the pills. They both seem pretty much clear minded, even when Zane gets some headaches every few mornings. But when they escape to the New Smoke, Tally learns that something went terribly wrong. Another must-read with a cliff-hanger ending. Left me waiting in suspence for the final part in the trilogy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretties School Review
When a random boy comes up to Tally Youngblood and hands her a note, she thinks that he is crazy. Tally Youngblood is your average pretty, going to parties, getting drunk, and not thinking more ahead than the next form of entertainment. See, in Tally's town when you turn sixteen you receive an operation that turns you from an ugly(normal person) to a mindless pretty. While Tally was still an Ugly, she was at a rebel camp called New Smoke that had figured out the operation ad was trying to spread the word about brain lesions you develop after the pretty cosmetic surgery. Tally volunteered herself to try the pills that the New Smoke made to see if they got rid of the lesions, but after she became pretty, she forgot everything about her life as an ugly and the pills. So whenthe random boy comes up to Tally and gives her the note she wrote giving permission to take the pills, she is bewildered. With her boyfriend Zane, she goes to take the pills, but splits them with him so that they each get one. Slowly things start to become clearer and clearer to them, but Zane starts getting huge headaches and Special Circumstances Doctor Cable is on their trail to find out about the pills. Suddenly Shay, Tally's best friend, stops talking to Tally and is found cutting herself on the arm with a group of friends. When Zane's headaches get so bad that he can barely get out of bed, Tally plans a hot air balloon escape to find the New Smoke to cure him. When they reach the New Smoke doctor, she says that Zane took the pill that eats away the lesions and your brain, and Tally took the pill that gets rid of the things that eat away the lesions, so Zane has had things eating away at his brain for a month or two, and Tally has had nothing happen to her brain. On their way back, their hot air balloon is overtaken by Special Circumstances hoverboards flown by the Cutters, a new brand of Specials led by none other than Shay, who takes Tally to Doctor Cable where she too becomes a Cutter. This is a swift and exiting read that has a predictable but exiting plot and a futuristic setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Feel Like I Like This Book!
This is our second encounter with Jamie Lee Curtis as an author and like the first (Where do Balloons Go?) they loved it!In this book we join a little girl as she takes a whirlwind tour of 13 different emotions, each told in that same sing-song rhyme that appears to be a staple of Curtis' writing. The rhymes are brought to life with the same riot of color illustrations that really seem to appeal to young readers! The kids especially liked how the colors used changed with the moods while maintaining their vivid shades (there is nothing gloomy or lackluster about this book). At the very end, there is a large picture of the girl in the story with a set of wheels that the kids can turn to see a selection of moods which was quite humorous and led to much discussion between the kids about how they were feeling right then and what types of things that have happened before made them feel angry or silly...or whatever...so it was a light, fun read, but also a good way to get more in depth discussion of moods, how they just happen sometimes and what types of activities/events make you feel certain ways...you know...like what makes you angry or sad...what makes you happy or what do you do when you just feeling silly or blue?I think Today I Feel Silly is best as a read aloud book...and the larger the group of kids you're reading to the more interesting the conversation after can get!I'd recommend this in a heart beat! We loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for boys and girls
This book teaches a wonderful lesson about moods and how they vary every day.You can tell its written by an actress, who likely has more dramatic moods than you and I, but the message is wonderful.I love reading this book to my six-month-old son.

4-0 out of 5 stars Today I Feel Silly and Other Moods That Make My Day
Joyful, confused, angry and happy are just some of the many moods that can make or break your day. Today I feel silly and other moods that make my dayby Jamie Lee Curtis is a hysterical story about a spunky little red head girl whose moods changes everyday with each flip of the page. The elaborate pictures change with each mood of the girl when she goes through her ups and downs. The Author does a brilliant job at adding detail to support how she is feeling and why she is feeling that way. Young and old would get a laugh out of this comical and entertaining book. I personally I love this book because it reminds me when I was little and my own random moods. Everyday you wake up new mood that changes you and the people around you in a good or bad way. After reading this book you might ask yourself, what's my mood today? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fight for Freedom
This book has a very powerful message to it.This made me think about all the things that I take for granted. With Amari beingfifteen, I can relate to her.Usually you can not find books like this now a days. This book makes me think more about how lucky I am and how there are kids in the world that aren't as fortunate as I am.Sharon knows how to grab the readers attention. My friends and I are not big readers and we thought this book was good, and it is one of the very few books that we can stand to read.Drapers knows how to catch your wondering eye because whenIsaw this book on the amazon website I wanted to read it and I was not really interested in reading any other books.
5-0 out of 5 stars VEEEEEEEEEEERY Good!
Copper Sun was an exceptional book.I completely fell in love with it.The characters were well developed, the plot wasn't very predictable, and it gave me a sense of awe and wonder when I finished it. The book is under the genre of historical fiction and is about a 15 year old slave girl who was captured and sold into slavery from her native home in Africa. However, this isn't your typical fly-away-to-freedom slavery book.Amari, the maincharacter, was raped and brutally beaten before she escaped to freedom with her white friend and a young boy.Sharon Draper offers two perspectives-that of Amari and of her white comrad Polly.Ironically instead of escaping to the North, they escape to the South where a non-discriminatory fort exists. There all are free and equal which is extremely uncommon during the year 1738.I won't tell anymore-you have to read it for yourself!

4-0 out of 5 stars Use your judgement, and pick and choose
As a new elementary guidance counselor, I haven't found a kids' book on divorce yet that I LOVE. Meanwhile, this is useful. It covers several aspects of divorce. It is too long to use the whole thing in one sitting with young children, and not all of it applies in every situation or is appropriate with every age group. However, it's fairly easy to select what you think is helpful and appropriate for your child(ren) because of the comic-book format and different chapters on different topics (ie. Having Two Homes, Telling Your Friends, Meeting Parents' New Friends).
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible book with negative spin
In trying to explain divorce, I read this to my son and paraphrased what the book said because I found myself surprised at the way it was written (especially since it was written by Arthur's creator, Marc Brown.) The book is negative in tone, language and illustrations. I'm not a parent trying to candy-coat divorce, but there have to be better books out there than this!
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful in school counseling groups
I use this routinely in elementary school divorce adjustment groups, particularly for grades Kinder through 3rd. The pictures are engaging and the situations are realistic. Students open up with information that helps me identify needs. Some parents have used this book with their children, and kids are always pleased to find that I have it, too. ... Read more

Small Steps is a book about a boy named Thedore(Armpit) who tries to turn his life around. While doing so, his friend X-Ray gets him into this scheme to sell tickets to the biggest popstar sensation, Kaira DeLeon. Miraculously, through his disabled nieghbor he develops a relationship with Kaira.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Awsome book
The book small steps is Awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have all ready recomended it to my whole class. I think this book was very adventueres but still could have happend. Pleeeeeeease make a sequel to this book

3-0 out of 5 stars A Little Boring
Small Steps is too predictable in the first half. You can tell what is going to happen with X-ray and Armpit trying to sell the scalped tickets but it takes too long to get there. The second half is where it gets exciting and unpredictable. In the first half you see the puzzle pieces before they're in, in the second half puzzle pieces come flying in from all different directions. Will X-ray and Armpit sell the scalped tickets? Is Armpit in love with Tatiana, a girl at school, or the famous singer Kaira DeLeon? I think it has too much bad language and in a competition Holes would win 24-7. Others may disagree but this is what I think. ... Read more

My 20 month toddler LOVES this book. We bought it because he had bitten a couple of times. He wants to read it almost every night and since we introduced the book, he has stopped biting. I like it that he enjoys the book so much and asks to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ouch! Biting hurts!
My (nearly) 3 year old daughter and I love this book. In our family, it's important to us to show how our actions affect other people. It's important to us not to retaliate in kind when someone hurts us. I really like how "Teeth Are Not For Biting" shows that even though we may feel rotten, there are other things to do instead - Things that don't hurt ourselves or others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The 10 star book "Tears ofa Tiger"
This book is amazing. It really gets you to think about a lot of things. You always say well that will never happen to me, but niether did Andy. It is a story that so many kids can relate to . Sharon Draper really out did herself in this book. This is the kind of book i could read over and over and over and never get tired of reading it. It really touched me in a special place and thought me that tomorrow is not promised and never take what you have or the people in your life for granted. I give this book 10 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars beyond amazing.
words cant explain how good this book was. i had to read it for a school thing and i read it in an hour it was so good. and so meaningful. its one of the reasons i will never drink. im fourteen and all my friends do but i dont plan on drinking ever, and defiantly not getting drunk. i was balling my eyes out. crying SO hard over this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read for Middle School children
This book deals very well with controversial topics such as drunk driving and suicide. Draper tells the story in a matter of fact manner that students will read and learn from. As a teacher of middle school children, I found this book very helpful and moving and well researched. Though somewhat predictable and heavyhanded, the story achieves it purpose and would be welcome in any classroom library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick Read
I bought this for my 13 year old daughter. She opened the book, read what interested her and never touched the book again.Although she did state the advice was good and mostly common sense.I sat and read it cover to cover and did realize most everything is common sense placed in a cute format. It is a very quick and entertaining read (silly illustrations).I would purchase this for a pre-teen not a know-it-all teen.Suggested age 9-12.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, 5 stars, no doubt!
A Smart Girl's Guide To Sticky Situations is the best book I have ever owned. It actually talks about the things thatgirl pre-teens andgirl teenagers have to go through when they are becoming a "woman" over time. This book really helped me in all topics. It helped me with periods the most...which is about the most confusing thing once teenagers know about what it is, how it works, what to do, and most of all how to protect.

The Watsons Go To Birmingham was a story about real life things. In the beginning, Byron and Kenny are outside scraping ice off of the Brown Bomber a.k.a. the Watsons car. Then Kenny hears a noise coming from the other side of the car where Byron is. He doesn't go over there because he thinks Byron will trick him, because a few days before Byron and Buphead (Byron's best friend) played a trick on Kenny and hit him in the face with snowballs. When Kenny goes to the other side finally he sees Byron's lips stuck to the mirror. He then ran in to get the family. Daniel (their dad) started laughing because he had never seen anything like that. Daniel and Wilona (their mom) were trying to think of a way to get Byron's lips off of the mirror. Daniel decided to get water so he could pore it on Byron's lips but it just made it. Wilona tells the family to go inside then. When they were all inside Wilona pulled on Byron's lips until they came off. When Kenny was in school he got picked on by Larry Dunn because he had a lazy eye and he was a good reader. One day a new kid named Rufus came to school at Clark. Rufus started getting picked on more than Kenny because Rufus talked different (he had lived in Arkansas) and Rufus didn't have a lot of clothes. Kenny and Rufus became good friends but one day somebody said something about Rufus and Kenny laughed. Since Kenny laughed at him Rufus stopped hanging out with Kenny. They ended up fixing the problem and became friends again. When winter came, Kenny shared his gloves with Rufus for awhile but then decided to act like he had lost them so his mom gave him his other pair of leather gloves and Rufus got the old pair. Then one day, Kenny's gloves went missing and Larry Dunn had gotten a pair of leather gloves instead of cheap plastic ones. Kenny found out that Larry had stolen his gloves so Byron and Buphead beat Larry up. Kenny then got his gloves back. When Byron kept lighting matches in the house Wilona got mad at him and said if he would do it one more time she would do something to him. Then one day, Kenny saw that Byron went into the bathroom and locked the door so he went and looked through the key hole. He saw Byron in there making Kleenex's into parachutes and then lighting matches and burning the parachutes to where they would fall into the toilet. When Wilona came upstairs she smelled smoke and saw Kenny looking through the keyhole so she got Byron out of there and took him downstairs. Then Joey started crying because Mama had gotten out matches and Vaseline. She knew that Mama was going to burn some part of Byron. Joey then got scared and kept getting in front of Byron so Mama couldn't burn him. When she got Joey away she lit a match but Joey ran over and blew out every match that Mama lit. So Byron never got burned. Since their dad only paid for groceries at one time Byron and Kenny thought they were on welfare but then found out they weren't. A few days later Kenny found Byron in a tree behind the grocery store with a full bag and an empty bag of Swedish cream cookies. When Kenny realized what Byron had done it was too late because he couldn't tell on him since he had eaten some of the cookies. A few days later, Byron came home with his hair straightened and permanent red gunk in his hair. Wilona was in shock because she and Daniel had told Byron not to put that stuff in his hair. Wilona knew he had gotten the stuff from Buphead because he was the only other kid with hair like that. Daniel then shaved all Byron's hair off! A few weeks later the Watsons started packing for Birmingham. They were going to Alabama to see Wilona's family. They decided that Byron would stay with Grandma Sands for the whole summer and maybe the school year. The family drove straight through all the way to Alabama. While they were down south the kids went swimming and Kenny almost got pulled under but Byron saved him. Joey went to Sunday school with some friends she had made. Then there was a loud boom. A bomb had gone off at the church. Joey ended up being safe because she had followed Kenny home. Wilona and Daniel decided not to leave Byron in Alabama. When they went home Kenny decided to give his dinosaurs to Rufus and Cody (Rufus's little brother). The Watsons lived there lives like they had before they went to Birmingham. The bombs going off at church made them rethink about there lives and feel good that they had everyone still in their family. I thought that this book was really a good book and I would reccomend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars good for younger children
This is a lovely book that addresses the loss of a loved one in simple terms. It also explains that young people can die of tragic and sudden events and does not merely focus on grandparents (as many others do). I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book for kids
Two people on a Grief Care team at our church reviewed this book and believe it is a very good book for children.Information is presented in a way that is easy to understand, but that allows for questions.Good information in the back of the book for parents or loved ones to guide them as they work with their children.

3-0 out of 5 stars I Miss You: A First Look At Death
This is a very good informative book; but I feel the language may be a little difficult for very young children.I think, as it is read to children, one would have to be careful to explain concepts in terms a very young child could better understand.Talk on their level. Overall.A good book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusion
I never quite understood why everyone seemed to love this book so much. I read it, along with my entire grade, in seventh grade, and found the book to be annoying. I was especially annoyed by flawed characters, and a not very impressive writing style.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed...
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred Taylor was a very disappointing book. There is no particular story; the book starts rising action here and there and down again here and there. There is no specific climax. Basically, it's like there's no story. What I also hated about this book was the ending and the fact that there was no moral in the story. The book was full of cliches from every chaper by chaper. Each chapter was too long( this is not a dumb complaint). Instead of just starting a new chapter, Taylor just skips a line to basically start a new chapter. I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take the scary out of ADHD for your kid
My [...] is a good reader so this book was at his level. However, we both sat down and read through it. It gave me some great hints as well as helping him to view his problem as managable. He especially liked the illustrations and puzzles scattered throughout the book - clearly with ADHD kids in mind! I am currently plowing through some adult books on ADHD and I keep referring back to this book for a more straight forward approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I got this book when my son was first diagnosed with ADHD and it is wonderful. It helped me understand what he was going through and him understand that he was just different. This book helped him to realize that he wasn't alone and that there are ways to help him help himself. My son feels that he has more control of things and is not afraid to ask questions or for help when needed. He not embarrased by ADHD it's just part of who he is.

1-0 out of 5 stars boring, plotles, dull
I, Like many other unfortunate youth, had to read this book for school and do journal responses for each chapter. I did the assingnment with little difficulty without finishing the book. It was that predictable! I only read the first two chapters before I could do the responses with little trouble.
5-0 out of 5 stars My brother sam is dead
Over the summer I read My brother sa is dead by James luneden Collier and Christopher Coliier. As one of my favorite books, there was many things i liked about I found interesting. When reading this book, you forget about reality and you start to feel as if you were in the story yourself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Spark an Early Interest in History
James Lincoln and Christopher Collier's story "my brother Sam is dead" begins at the dawn of the Revolution, a time when Loyalists felt much the same as Mr. Beach's remark to Sam in Chapter 1: "I think men of common sense will prevail. Nobody wants a rebellion except fools and hotheads." Doubtful or unaware of just how focused and set on independence from the Crown of England the Rebel militia actually were, the loyalists or tories of Colonial America were caught off guard when they realized "Live Free or Die" was more than a motto is was a commitment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid, well-done fiction -a teacher's review
'The Cay' is a wonderful little bit of fiction. It has action, is well-written and contains such themes as overcoming racism, sacrifice and resourcefulness. Its quick-moving plot and easy to read style should make it accessible to almost anyone.
4-0 out of 5 stars Why this book inspired me
This book inspired me by perservering. The young boy on the island never gave up after he became blind. For example, he asked the elderly man to show him how to survive on the island. This helped me in school because even though something might happen to me I shouldn't give up.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book
The Cay, by Theodore Taylor is an extremely exciting book, which could be read by ages 10 and up because it does not have very hard vocabulary, and it is easy to understand. This book takes place on the island of Curacao in the Caribbean, during World War Two. Philip, who is a preteen lives on Curacao is from Virginia, and lives on the island with his mother, and father. German submarines have surrounded the island and were destroying boats that were trying to get off the island. When Philips mother gets scared that the Germans will attack the island, she wants to get back to the United States with Philip. When their boat leaves, the Germans do not torpedo them...yet. Philip ends up on a raft with an old colored deckhand from the boat. He is old, and is named Timothy, who is from the U.S. Virgin Islands. They keep drifting for around a week and then end up on a, small remote island that is in an area called the "Devils Mouth." Timothy has excellent survival skills. I definitely would recommend this book to anyone who likes, suspenseful exciting books. I think both boys and girls would like this book. Overall a great book that many people would like. ...
