5-0 out of 5 stars Words Are Weapons
This is an excellent book using age appropriate language to send out the message of just how hurtful and harmful words can be.We all know the doggerel bravado verse of sticks and stones is just a crock.I never bought it because words are infinitely more painful than any stick or stone.I think that deceptive verse should be changed to:
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful message
This book does a great job reinforcing how powerful words are.The book sends out a great message in a child centered and creative way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Designed especially for children ages 4 to 7
Written by parenting columnist Elizabeth Verdick with an age-appropriate vocabulary, and illustrated by Marieka Heinlen, Words Are Not For Hurting was designed especially for children ages 4 to 7, a time of growing vocabularies and increasing social interaction with peers and others. The simple, positive message is think before speaking, and choosing not only what to say but how to say it. Young readers will also learn of the power in saying "I'm sorry" when the speak words that hurt the feelings of others. Enhanced with a special section at the end that includes activities and discussion starters, Words Are Not For Hurting is confidently recommended for home, school, and childcare center early childhood library resources and character education reading lists.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Favorite
Very sweet book.I got this for my husband for Father's Day and it's a great addition to our library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, sweet, and touching
I just love these books.Anne Gutman's very, very simple tale is sweet and touching. The illustrations are by Georg Hallensleben, the same illustrator who did Gutman's Lisa and Gaspard series, and his slightly crude, yet charming use of color and quick seeming acrylic sketches are just brilliant. It's a vibrant book.Perfect for a toddler.I bought both of these for a friend's baby and I do hope the parents will enjoy them as much as the little girl will--Iknow I'd keep them if I could somehow justify having a book for babies in my library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful little book
A wonder little book for fathers and sons, just right for a toddler's attention span and with beautiful artwork. My son picked up on the "game" in this book rather quickly, and enjoys it very much. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reinforcement for young girls
My 10 year old neice couldn't put this book down.It allows girls to read about common problems and solutions before they actually happen.Good food for thought for girls between the ages of 9 and 12.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Kids
The book called What Would You Do? is a great book for kids aged 8 to 11 because it helps people to have a better life. For example, if you have a sister or a brother and you do not want them to come into your room you can look at the book What Would You Do? and get good advice. On the first page the book says to make a rule for your sister or brother. If your rule says your siblings have to pay five cents when they enter your room, that will solve the problem. That's why I say you should read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Molly's Pilgrim is a great book.
I really enjoyed reading Molly's Pilgrim. It was just the right reading level for me.It was not too hard and not too long, but it was interesting. It is about a girl who comes to a new school and is different from everyone else.It is hard for her to adjust. One of the parts that made an impression is when the teacher likes Molly's pilgrim doll best and appreciated it.I would recommend this book to girls who might get discouraged with books that are long, because even though it is not a hard book, it's really interesting.By HG.

3-0 out of 5 stars Molly's Pilgrim
The book "Molly's Pilgrim" by Barbara Cohen is about a girl named Molly. It is her first Thanksgiving and she founds out that she really doesn't have anything to be thankful for.Her classmates really make fun of her because of her unfamiliarity with American ways.
5-0 out of 5 stars Molly:a classic for ESL classes everywhere!
Barbara Cohen understands ESL students like no other author ever has!In "Molly's Pilgrim" she describes the pain of a Russian Jewish immigrant in her American school in Winter Hill.Molly is mocked and ridiculed by the most popular girl in Miss Stickley's class, and Molly's "limitations" are made even more evident because Molly and her mother don't understand Thanksgiving from the viewpoint of American culture. The assignment is to design a clothespin doll to look like a pilgrim woman, but Molly's mother designs the doll to look like a Russian immigrant girl.In the process, the class learns that pilgrims did not stop coming to America for religious freedom in the 1600s. Molly's family are pilgrims too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous, multi-dimensional book!
Tough Boris a story about a pirate...but the pictures tell a much different story than the words convey. In the end, it seems Boris isn't all that tough after all. I think it's a fabulous book that can really stimulate a child's powers of observation and ability to communicate what they see. It also illustrates different emotions, shows children that things aren't always what they first seem to be, and that people have many different facets and layers to who they are. It shows that we should take the time to look deeper into a person's heart before coming to a conclusion about them.A great social "study"! I use it in my preschool classroom.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
My three year old, who loves pirates, adores this book. The text is very simple, and poignant. The pictures allow the reader to create his or her own story about a stolen violin. The predictability of the text ("He was tough! All pirates are tough. He was massive! All pirates are massive . . . ") makes it fun for the child to follow along, and introduces some vocabulary as well. A great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars So you think you're a tough guy huh?!
This is a wonderful story about a pirate who's rough and tough on the outside, but has a soft side too.Death is treated matter-of-factly with no philosophical overtones (you fill in the blanks when they ask, "why did the parrot die", or "what happened when the parrot died?") and children identify with Boris about their self-concepts and reactions to conflict and fears in their life. In the end, Boris teaches children that it's okay to be a nice guy and still be tough, and that it's okay to be sad and cry sometimes.I recommend this book to children over the age of 4 (mainly because of the slightly scary pirate scenes involving angry faces, swords and scuffling-nothing gorry)- all the way through adulthood!

5-0 out of 5 stars Differences are what make the world so great
Charlie and Isabelle are the same age but they have some differences. For example, Charlie is tall and Isabelle is short, and whereas Charlie runs fast, Isabelle likes to take her time. The last difference that Charlie explains is when he tells us: "I know a lot of words.Isabelle's words are sometimes hard for me to understand."In the text of "My Friend Isabelle," author Eliza Woloson never comes out and says that Isabelle has Down syndrome and I was thinking that any indication of her condition in Bryan Gough's illustrations might well be too subtle for young children to pick up.But then it occurred to me that if a parent was reading this book to young children, or let them read it on their own, and then there was probably already a child with Down syndrome in the family or in the neighborhood.
5-0 out of 5 stars "My Friend Isabelle"
"My Friend Isabelle" is a book that ALL parents should have on their bookshelf. It celebrates the relationship between two children who are different from one another. It is an important book because today's classrooms are becoming more and more diverse. This book is a great tool to introduce these differences.I have been waiting for a book like "My Friend Isabelle".Thank you Ms. Woloson for being so insightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars The World Has Needed This Book for Some Time.
I can't praise this book enough. The illustrations and straightforward story line appeal to children while the message is one all aldults need to see.As the mother of a Down Syndrome child, I was overjoyed at how clearly the message came through that Down Syndrome kids are kids first. They enjoy all the usual childhood activities and enjoy friendships with thier non-Downs peers as well.I plan on purchasing this book for our local public library and our elementary school library as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting for all
I really enjoyed reading this book being a teenager myself. It was very inspirational and touching. It is a good book for teenagers in any situation. I think it would be good for parents to read this book also because they could have a better understanding of what their teenager might be going through. This book talked about issues that are harder to talk about. It provides anonymous help lines for teenagers in need. The tops range from life to death. It is a very uplifting book for all.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW! This book was soo amazing, I couldn't stop reading it! This book made me realize that I should be greatful to have such a awesome life and there are others out there that have hard times. 5-0 out of 5 stars Funny! Great! I LOVE it!
Okay, I just turned thirteen. So for my birthday, I get to go to B&N. (I'm a book worm) As I'm looking through the teens area, I notice this book. Ah, what the heck, couldn't hurt to take a peek, Right? Wrong. Hurt very much. That is to say that I was Laughing so hard, I was sure my sides were going to split. My dad is a major Worry Wort. I understand why he worrys, though. This book is just like my dad, only much funnier. And my dad is pretty funny. So this book is great. I highly recomend this for teen girls. No I'm not saying you have probs, but if for nothing else, It's a funny book. The things he talks about in the book ARE important, and it is important to wipe the tears out of your eyes so you could read it. My mom was busting up and nodding her head at the same time. My dad aproves of it as well. My sis is eight, and I'll give it to her when I'm done with it. So it's good for every one. I don't think boys will like it very much, though...

5-0 out of 5 stars Boys will put you on a pedastal
I would recommend this book because I believe it is something that all girls should read. This book has advice for everyone, except for boys, and it is enjoyable at the same time. For example the chapters are on important topics in life. These topics should be read by the people meant to read them, girls.

Cameron, Carla, and Len were fascinated (for different reasons) with guns and target shooting at the Patriots' club range until the day Len brought his Kalashnikov rifle, his AR-18, and his Ruger pistol to school, and shot and killed football jock Brad Williams, and then himself. Here is yet another school shooting story that begins with bullying and ends with disaster--a type that is becoming almost a sub-genre of YA fiction. Yet Walter Dean Myers, winner of many awards for his young adult novels, brings freshness and new anguish to this familiar tale (and growing social problem) of unstable victim tormented by bullies to homicidal rage. It's a great book with suspense in every page! However it is not for kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great demonstration of Mr. Myers's craft
I am waiting for Walter Dean Myers to wring a play or screenplay. I am an actor and a playwright and when I read "Shooter" just like "Monster" he crafts dialogue so effectively that it carries the story even without the narrative. Each character has a specific and active voice. Even the psychologists and reporters who merely record or probe information. But it's the diary of the Shooter at the end where you will be blown away by how Myers is able to get inside the mind of a disturbed, misunderstood and lonely teenager. This book is so incredible that whenever I lend it to one of my students, I don't get it back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gun
This book Shooter is about Carmeron Porter. Carmeron is a seventeen year old African American. He goes to school at Madison High School in Harrison County. In the book Carmeron is being interviewed. He gets interviewed five times with five different people. The reason he is being interviewed is because his friend Len killed himself in school. The statement fact is: a seventeen-year-old White male found dead in the aftermath of a shooting incident at Madison High School in Harrison County. The conclusion: Death by self- inflicted wound.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Teenage Guy's Survival Guide
This book is about dating, dumping and being dumped also how to deal with it. It is about puberty changes and how to deal with them and what to do. This book is about all you need to know to be a teenager. My favorite part of the book was the part the author talked about dating. This part of thee book informed me about how to approach a girl and how not to approach a girl. It also told me never to send a friend to ask someone out for you. It told me how to act when you dump someone or if you get dumped. It told me how to act on a date and what to do and what not to do. It also said what to do on a date and what not do on a date. This part of the book told me that a little cologne goes a long way so don't over does. I recommend this book because it was a great help. Now I know how to approach a girl the right way. I know how to have a good date and what to do on a date. Another reason I recommend this book is because I know how everything works puberty wise and that it happens to everybody. The last reason I recommend this book is because it tells you everything you need to know about being a teenager.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I'm a thirteen year old boy and I reserved this book at the library to read some time ago. I found it answers a lot of questions about growing up and puberty, although the part about sex was pretty short.
5-0 out of 5 stars More! More! More!
I am a boy at age 12, and when i read this book i was amazed. I learned a lot. The stuff you cant talk about with your parents is in here. The truth is embarassing, but i loved it. The book is really funny, too. This book covers everything from your first date to masturbation. Not too much about sex, only one page. I reccomend this book for 11-16 year olds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is an excellent book for girls who don't have an older sibling that could tell them about their experience through puberty. It is also great for teens entering middle school. During elementary school, there arent many cliques around but in middle school, you'll see cliques EVERYWHERE,and I mean everywhere. this book will teache the child how to deal with the attitudes of the people in the clique, and not to be ashamed of who they are.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute for those under 15
This book is extremely cute-for those under the age of 15. I bought this book when I was 12 and I'm 17 now. Some of the things have stuck with me. Like how to find your power stance and how to plunge a toliet (don't ask). But as I look through it now there's alot of things that seem like they will be good advice but are just obvious. Almost ever section and topic is very blunt and striaght forward. Like the "Be in Charge of Your Financial Life" is quite obvious with the five steps as 1. Earn More 2. Spend Less 3. Save Sufficiently 4. Invest Wisely and 5. Give Generously. And that was as about as indebth as you get. So overall it really didn't grab my attention and bored me.

1-0 out of 5 stars My Mistake
I was hoping, without going to a bookstore and completely looking through it, that this would be a benficial book for my 13 year old.Instead it put her in tears.Instead of accepting themselves as who they are and how they look, they bring kids to the conclusion that they cannot be OK if they break out.My daughter was very upset and all I could do was apologize. If you are looking for a book that wants to compress your daughter into the current fashions and mainstream, maybe this is for you, then again, I strongly believe that my daughter is special and that this has not helped her self-confidence or her understanding of all the changes happening.Personally, I do not want my daughter caught up in all of the latest makeup and dress, I want her to be able to wear what she is comfortable in and feel comfortable in her own skin.Next time I will review any books I get for her much closer. ... This account of a young girl in India sold into the sex trade by best-selling author Patricia McCormick is extraordinary. I am an adult and after reading this book I was stunned by what is occurring to thousands of unsuspecting 13-year old girls in this part of the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stuck In Nuetral
Stuck In Neutral is a must read for anyone in any age group. The story is about a boy named Shawn who is 14-years old. Shawn was born with Cerebral Palsy. His dad, Sydney E. McDaniel, left him when he was just a baby. Sidney E. McDaniel wrote a poem about his son a while after he left.He then won a Pulitzer Prize and got really famous. In the beginning of the book Shawn stated that because his dad didn't like that his son has a disorder, that he was going to "end his pain."
3-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
I woudn't recommend this book to anyone because it gets a little redundent. The story is about a boy wh was born with a busted blood vessel in his brain that affected his abiliy to move a single muscle, which takes a real toll on his family. They live in a small tow in seattle, with practicly no father because he is to busy on TV shows and adio shows because of his poetry about his son.So his dad can't take it anymore and he decides to end the boys suffering by killing him.The story is told in the boys eyes and we soon realize that the boy is not really suffering but he cant tell his dad that because of his problem with his brain. And we are the only people who get to see this side, the only peple who get to hear him speak.Read the book to ind out the ending.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stuck in neutral
Stuck in Neutral, by Terry Trueman, is a book about a kid named Shawn McDaniel. Shawn is a 14-year old kid who is fully paralyzed. Although he can't move or talk, Shawn is intelligent. He can remember anything he hears without meaning to remember it.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Rocky Tale
Armand is a hobo and hates children. One day, he arrives back under the bridge (his home) only to find kids and their mother. He becomes attached to them and gives them life experiences but can he give them there Christmas wish?
5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Book Ever By Immanuel GutierrezCCMS
I thought this book was great.Right from the start A gypsy tells Armand that he would have an adventure that day. That day he meet the Calcet family and his life was not the same.Even though he tried to guard his heart, the kids got through to him.It is a great book to read with your family because it offers hope and takes you though on an adventure through Paris, including Notre Dame Cathedral, and The Court of Miracles.Armand said "you should never give up hope," when the fisherman wound up the fishing pole and found the missing pair of his shoe.It it a great book for families that are homeless or having a hard time in life and for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars A heartwarming story
Natalie Savage Carlson perfectly illustrates what it means to be a family in this heartwarming book. The book is set in Paris in the early 1900's.It explores the world of hoboes and homeless people, a topic which children usually have little experience with.Armand is a homeless man who lives a solitary life under a bridge over the Seine River. He faithfully avoids children, calling them starlings, and saying they will steal your heart if you aren't careful. One day he arrives back home under the bridge, only to find a group of starlings sleeping in his spot.He tries his best to keep them out of his heart, but they work their way in and call Armand their grandpa. The importance of family is the main theme of this book.Armand finds a family and in the end couldn't be happier about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth exploring by students & freshmen...to help face a multitude of real-world challenges
From the standpoint of intent, scope & substance, this wonderful book is exactly similar to 'The Power of Focus for College Students' by Andrew Hewitt & Luc D'Adabie. I have reviewed this latter book earlier.
5-0 out of 5 stars awsome book
great book for anyone feeling lost as far as what they want to do with their lives. It makes it really easy to understand all the financial stuff in today's world. I used some of the people skills they have written about and noticed improvemnt.

I picked up this book this week-end TO "BROWSE" and found myself into the book one hour later, still reading. WOW!!! I sure wish there would have been a book like this for my age group. But, I'm learning a thing or two even now with reading Kent and Kyle's book. This book is a must for any family with teens, pre-teens or adults still wanting to grow. I'm going to buy a copy for our church library, too. What an inspiration this book is-----for everyone! Thanks for writing it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Joey Pigza has problems. Big problems. He was emotionally abused by his grandmother. He has never met his dad. He can't get along in his elementary school classroom because of his mood swings and his "dud meds." We gradually see that Joey must have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), which is not being effectively controlled with his current medication. Joey's life is a terrifying roller-coaster ride, andJack Gantos, author of the Rotten Ralph books, drags the reader along to see what life is like with ADD. The story is written from the boy's point of view in a sharp, worried style that veers out of control when Joey does. Joey's control of his own behavior slips away as we read, horrified to see this boy trying to get a grip on his life and failing. He disrupts the class field trip; he puts his finger in a pencil sharpener and injures himself; he swallows his house key. Then he runs through the classroom holding open sharp scissors. When he trips and falls, seriously injuring a classmate, he is transferred to a special-education program in another school. Here, thankfully, he encounters a caring teacher who recommends further medical evaluation, and Joey is eventually able to return to his former school. There is hope for Joey on the last page--he sits in the Big Quiet Chair to read. Gantos has achieved an unusual feat with this book. We want to turn away from Joey's shifting prison of emotions. But for those who stick with him, he shows us what his life is like. We walk a mile in his shoes, our feet hurting all the way. For young readers touched by ADD--and for their teachers and parents--Joey gives us the key to his world. (Ages 10 and older) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tigers, Family and Friendship Conquer All
Do you like big cats? How about discovering secrets? If you do, I have a book for you! It's called, The Tiger Rising by Kate diCamillo. The book begins when a lonely and unhappy boy, Rob, discovers a tiger in the woods behind the motel where he and his father live. Rob has to figure out whose tiger it is. When he discovers the tiger belongs to the mean, grouchy and greedy motel owner, Rob concocts a plan. What will he do? You have to read the book to find out. I'm Laura, and I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, family and making difficult decisions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb but somber
This is an extremely well-written story in every regard, and would appeal to even adult readers. It is, however, a serious and downright sad story, and is not as magical as the author's latest works, a fact which may disappoint some.

1-0 out of 5 stars The exception to the Dicamillo rule
This book is really a departure from the fantastic writing I'm used to from Kate Dicamillo. While it's similar in some ways to "Because of Winn Dixie", it fails to create a bond between the reader and the book's characters. I kept thinking the story would take a turn and grab my attention, or sympathy, or anything to make me care about what is happening to these characters, but it never happened. Fabulous author, bad book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A 1-day read!
I was at my usual trip to the library, shuffling through the books, and this book caught my eye. I picked it up, and read the inside, which honestly, I think was lamely put. Well, I took the book home and started to read it. By the third chapter, I was hooked. It was interesting, and what really was neat to me, was how it sounded like an actual 13 year old was telling the story!
1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of time
I read this book for school a while ago, and from the moment I started I knew that it was going to be a long, long, long read. The characters in the book were a bunch of annoying brats that seemed far too full of themselves to actually exist. The plot was also terriable for the fact that it was almost as if there wasn't one. A girl goes looking for her mother (which the outcome is clearly easy to spot since the book puts too much of it's time on the buildup of"Whats going to happen?")
