5-0 out of 5 stars ...If You Traveled West in a Covered Wagon
We are homeschoolers, and are studying U.S. History. We used this book to compliment our studies of the Reconstruction and Reform Period. My children enjoyed the layout, as well as the information. They liked it so well, they usually read ahead of the scheduled assignments!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Teaching Book!
This book was wonderful to use in the classroom with my Fourth Graders! It is written so that they can easily read and understand it and provided realistic illustrations to support the text. While it is not a book thatcan be easily read in one sitting it goes along well with our study of theWestward Movement and was enjoyed by all the students. It was conducive togroup discussion and covered all the aspects of the topic that the studentswished to know from the question "What was a covered wagon?" to"Could they recieve mail along the way?". It lent itself toprojects and assignments for the students. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good reading for children!
My 9 year-old son recently lost his father and he was not talking to me or any family members about his feelings. This book was very thorough for a young person and it helped him to open dialogue with me and start his grieving process. I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for Basic Questions of A Child Experiencing A Death
This book provides brief and blunt answers to questions many children may have and adults may not consider - it touches on 'What is a Memorial Service', 'Where does the person go', 'Am I Going To Die Too?', 'Is the Death My Fault' as well as common feelings experienced while grieving. Each topic is brief and written for a child.
1-0 out of 5 stars Childish illustration paired with Blunt realism.
I bought this for my 4 1/2 year old, she has never seen it. I found it too clinical, and not at all what I had imagined having read the other reviews. The cartoons seemed aimed at my daughters age group, yet the writing is in my opinion, not for little ones. I showed this book to my twelve year old niece, thinking maybe the target was more in her age range. Her response was an incredulous "isnt this supposed to make you feel better!?"... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for toddlers
I read this book to my toddler when he started hitting and then reinforcing it by saying hands are not for hitting when ever he would hit.It really worked - he loved doing some of the fun things that hands are good for as we read along.I liked it that it focused on positive things to do with your hands while still enforcing that hitting is not what hands are for.Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
shows many ideas of what hands can be used for and they are not for hitting.

2-0 out of 5 stars It depend on what you are looking for .....
This is a great book, if you want your child to think of all kinds of great things you can do with your hands.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and joyful
This is a very interesting book, with wonderful pictures and lots of joy. It's a book that makes you happy. Many of the celebrations were unknown to me, and it was fun to see that the Swedish celebration of St. Lucia is described correctly in the book (I'm Swedish).
4-0 out of 5 stars Get your kids involved!
Avisually-rich companion peice to this wonderful kid-friendly introduction to world politics and cultures is "For a Better World: Posters from the United Nations" by EdwardMarks. More than half the posters feature the worlds' children and the plights they face, each in an artistic creation that inspires hope. What better way to educate children that "no human is an island"?

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous full-color large photos
I love this book and I use it all the time to teach children about other faiths and cultures. The beautiful, realistic photos make it great for sharing. When I am not using it, it makes a nice coffee table book.My only criticism is that it always makes me want to research more (not a lot of text, but the photos and illustrations make it worth having). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
Absolutely the best work of fiction EVER. Indeed, I too wish, that there were 1001 stories or even 1.000.001 ones inside this lovely book but all good things must come to an end.5-0 out of 5 stars text by Geraldine McCaughrean;illustrations by Stephen Lavis
Oxford University Press, 1993.Stories (meant for children) include fables, romances, narrative jokes, and fairy tales, linked to one another by the King and Queen's own love story.Shahrazad's attempts to stave off execution by telling just one more story have been expanded to fuller effect than in many versions. The book is written in a style that is clear, gripping, and poetic, conveying the flavor of the original and preserving the context of a magic, jinni-ridden desert world. 12 color plates and many b/w illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine!
This is one of the most famous classic fictions. I have just read some of the stories but I find them very interesting. For example ' Princess Lila and the three brothers' is one of the most fanastic stories. This story is about three princes in order to marry the beautiful Princess Lila, They went far far away to find the moset wonderful things on earth. The one with the most wonderful things can marry the princess. I think their ' wonderful thing' is really wonderful. Do you want to know what's the wonderful thing? Do buy one and find out the answer! You will be surprised! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings back an almost forgotten era
When my niece (from L.A.) first came to New York, she was seven years old. I took her to the rehabilitated Ellis Island, and she was (for a seven year old) fascinated to learn that her great grandparents along with millions of other immigrants had stepped across that pier and became Americans. For Christmas, I sent her this brilliant book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good retelling of the Robin Hood stories
Roger Green, a member of the famed Inklings, retells the stories of Robin Hood in a very cohesive and enjoyable manner. He combines the stories of Tennyson, Noyes, Munday, Peacocke, Scott, and a number of other medieval (some anonymous) authors. His retelling nearly seamlessly ties them together, and you would not even guess that the stories were from different sources if you did not already know in advance.
1-0 out of 5 stars Aww!
I never want to read this book again! There is way to much violence for 12 and plus.I had to read it for school and I was horified!I hope they switcth books next year!

4-0 out of 5 stars Robin Hood; not just for children
This imaginative medieval tale of an old-fashioned super-hero was delightfully written in old English.Green writes of a time when wickedness ruled the land, and the common folk needed an advocate. In this story the hero, Robin Hood, ruled Sherwood Forest with his band of men stealing from the evil rich and giving to the poor. This collection of stories was a great example of morality and integrity, showing how Robin Hood never gave up in fighting for what he believed was right. It is a well written book, interesting and appealing to mostly younger people. As much as I am probably older than the target audience of these stories, I truly enjoyed reading the collection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just Pharaohs--but all of Egypt!
This book is another Landmark Books success!
5-0 out of 5 stars Pharaohs!
The mythology of Egypt can be fun, but the history is what really draws your attention. A clear part of Egyptian history is her pharaohs, and this book follows the line of ancient pharaohs with adequately-sized sections for each.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Effective Introduction to Ancient Egypt for Children
Written for children who are independent readers, Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt was, nevertheless, a fascinating introduction to Ancient Egypt for all my children. My younger daughter was in first grade at the time and needed some help with the reading, but the stories themselves were of great interest to her. It was fun for me to see all three of them learn about the Rosetta Stone and other archaeological discoveries, most of which I hadn't learned about until I was well past childhood. It's amazing what the children will find interesting when it comes wrapped in a story. Although some may regard the story-telling as somewhat fanciful (obviously we don't really know what most of these people really thought or felt), the author has succeeded in her quest to bring the attention of the reader into the context of the history she describes.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sophomore AP History Student
I honestly do not think that I am very good at United States History (still got an A+) and being that it is now two months before the May AP Season, I can tell you with confidence that after reading the 1070 pages, my knowledge of US History is flimy. Of course, I plan on going back and reading teh book again and buying the Princeton Review's prep book, but I cannot tell yet for sure how well the book has done for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for Study of Ancient Egypt
This is a book of short stories translated from Egyptian hieroglyphics. Some of the oldest stories in the world are told in the three different sections: Gods, Magic, and Adventures. The subject matter may be too confusing for grade school children; Egyptian stories either follow a different patter of plot development than we are used to or else some of it is lost in translation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great source on Egypt Mythology
This book is a translation into English of many Egyptian myths. It is a great learning tool for kids of any age, and especially great for homeschoolers who are using Story of the World for History.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terribly one sided account of the Revolution.
According the the Author's note, the purpose of this book is to show what America lost by winning the Revolution. She portrays the loyalists having been treated unfairly by the patriots, to the point of not being able to send their children to school, not being able to speak freely, and being in fear of being attacked and having their homes burned down. She fails to mention any dangers faced by the Patriots. This book is horribly one sided.I bought this for my neice, but would be ashamed to actually give it to her as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars History from different perspectives!
I thought that this book was a great example of how all of our history books should be written: from multiple perspectives! All we ever hear about our history is the positive patriotic version that is sugar coated and mostly false. For once, someone has written a story for children that shares both sides of the story: Loyalist and Patriot. This book beautifully compares and contrasts the viewpoints of both sides, the impact the war had on both sides, and some of the important figures, both Loyalist and Patriot. Excellent book to get your children thinking critically about the American Revolution!

1-0 out of 5 stars Anti-American, politically correct garbage
When I read this book I was so disappointed at the author's attempt to paint Patriots as the bad guys! She has written a "politically correct" story of the Revolutionary War.Is there anyone out there who actually believes the British should have won, or retained control of the colonies? When I pointed out to my son's teacher the not-so-subtle message in the book, she removed it from the classroom. My advice:READ THESE BOOKS BEFORE YOU BUY THEM. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Obbsessed and Loving It!
First off, I love ancient Egypt! It's my life! I want to be an Egyptologist when I grow up!! I love it, love it, love it! I admit, I have never gottne this product, but from the reviews I've read, it sounds GREAT!!! I want myself, but being a kid, I'm broke....... But, you should deffitnitly get this if you love egypt! Even if you don't, it's a great way to start to love egypt! I love it and I don't even have it!! It sounds like so much fun! So go ahead, if you have money go out there and get it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all ages
I bought this treasure chest as a "treat" (for my daughter or myself, I am still not sure) to finish off our study of ancient Egypt. We couldn't wait, so we opened it right away and were thrilled.I expected most of the activities to be too hard for my 6yo, but she has enjoyed them thoroughly. The lock can be a bit hard for small fingers to open, but the key is easy to work and that can be fun enough in itself. There are 2 board games, both of which she could play. One is very, very simple (think Chutes and Ladders) while the other requires more strategy.Depending on your child's interests/abilities in games you might find that you only play one of the two, but we have been happy playing both. The playing pieces are made rather flimsy light cardboard, but they are functional enough if your child is careful. The stamping set is about average, and suffers from all the little problems child's stamping kits are heir to, but overall produces legible hieroglyphs. You'll need an extra pair of hands or weights to hold the papyrus unrolled, but it looks great when you're finished. The hieroglyph "decoder" wheel has been great fun for my daughter who thinks codes are exciting. The necklace was a little disappointing, only because the string provided came apart when I tried to disentangle it.We replaced it with our own string/wire and made our lovely necklace just fine. The beads had holes large enough for my child to thread them herself, although a needle proved helpful. The posters (one of deities reverses to one of regents and another one with a map) are attractive and informative without being overwhelming and my daughter enjoyed placing the approppriate stickers on the spaces provided on the map.The only piece of this chest w ehave not used yet is the grid for reproducing an egyptian picture, but I'm sure many other children are more artistically inclined than mine and will find it fun.Overall, my daughter and I have enjoyed this kit immensely and highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great History tool
This is justthe sort of thing I would have loved when I was a kid. I'm an adult and I love it anyway. This is a great way to spark a child's interest in history. For someone who already loves studying ancient Egypt it will provide hours of fun. The package is beautiful and makes a wonderful gift. ... Read more
