5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for all ages.
Peace One Day is a colorful, enchanting and inspiring book.It is the story of a young man who believes that one person can make a difference in the world and has demonstrated it many times over.Sometimes the world seems too big, too complex and out of reach, particularly to kids.True changemakers appear larger than life or saints but here is a story about Jeremy Gilley who is just a man who loves children, loves life and loves peace. He set out to establish a single day of peace on the calendar when all countries and people observe a global ceasefire when food and medicine can get across borders and refugees can return to their families. He set out asking heads of state, dignitaries and engage children all over the globe.

5-0 out of 5 stars delightful story
witty and humorous tale of unintended consequences, which applies to lots of other areas!

4-0 out of 5 stars cute
Hithis is a cute parody of a Grimm brother's tale: here the princess who drops gems whenever she speaks finds it more of a curse than a blessing, and the one cursed with spitting disgusting bugs finds ways to turn that to her advantage. The humor is cute, if a bit forced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mistakes for Good Luck
This is a very funny book. It tells about two sisters and a step mother who liked the younger sister better than Rosella. Rosella was kind to an old lady who was actually a nice magic fairy. The fairy gave her an award by making jewels pop out of her mouth when she sang or spoke. The handsome prince liked what he saw when he met Rosella some time later. Eventually they get married and live happily ever after. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Zinsta
I've been zining off and on for about 9 years now, almost a decade. I've done so much thru zines and now even run a regular e-zine on my own website. It was natural for me to pick up this book when I saw it laying around at teh library. It was love at first sight. Some of the best known names are mentioned in or contributed to this volume. Zining = hardcore rad.
3-0 out of 5 stars This book could be so great, so why include the "f" word? Page 104.
As an art teacher I was thrilled to see the perfect zine manual for my students, until one of them spotted the "f" word on page 104. It's only included in the title of a referenced book, but Why?! Is that one book so important, that it MUST be included as a reference?... for 6-12th graders? Please tell me that the second edition of this wonderful resource will not include, "F***ed up and Photocopied" in the biblography... maybe then I can use it in my classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Zine Book EVER!
This is a BEAUTIFULLY put together manual for making a zine or mini-comic.It is clearly made with the love and care of true zine-makers.I have been making zines for over 10 years and still found tons of information within the pages of this wee treasure that I had not before known.I would recommend this for all.It is just a magnificently inspiring and helpful document for self-publication. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute book, first intro to discovering odd and even numbers
This book is quite cute from an entertainment perspective.Farmer Bill wakes up to a snowstorm one day to find that he is missing one of his mittens. When he goes to his barns, he discovers one by one, that each of his animals is missing a mitten (be prepared to explain what a cow's udder is for!).They finally see the goat at the top of the hill who is the culprit - he's munching on all the mittens! When they're all inside, the goat decides to make lunch on Farmer Bill's new coat.Very cute story and throughout the book, the illustrations indicate how many mittens the animals have (i.e. three for the cow) and "odd" is written under the three mittens, and the next picture is of four mittens with "even" written under them.Right now, my little one thinks that odd means just "weird" so that concept is coming a little slowly.Be prepared to go into a full explanation of numbers when you read this book.It definitely takes some time to do but the story makes it well worth it.Ours has to be read nightly.Highly recommend!

2-0 out of 5 stars Book intro's idea of even and odd numbers
We loved Murphy's "Henry the Fourth", but we didn't particularly like this book. While the artwork is delightful, the rhymes are clumsy, and worse, the premise just is not very interesting. At least, finding out what happened to the cow's utter-mittens did not engage my kids (almost 3 and 5).
3-0 out of 5 stars Awkward, but cute
By far, the illustrations are the best part of this book. The wonderful depictions of Farmer Bill, his farm and animals give the book much more depth than the forced rhymes. And frankly, they also do a better job of getting across the concepts of odd and even. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Historical info for kids
This is a history book that describes the lives of knights in the Middle Ages. The book describes how boys could become knights, what the rules of the code of honor for knights were, and what battles between knights were like. The book introduces a lot of factual material and vocabulary, but there is no plot or story line. At the end of the book, there is a short section describing some famous knights and their dragons.Personally, I found the book a bit dry, but kids who are fascinated with swords and armor may show some interest in it.The book has about 900 words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knights in Shining Armor
As an heraldic artist for over 40 years and with grandchildren becoming interested in ALL things, I found this book very helpful in passing on my interests. It has helped them to become intrigued with the Knights of the Roundtable and their play now includes slaying dragons and rescuing fair maidens. They also have started asking about the various insignia in all my books on heraldry. 5-0 out of 5 stars What an enjoyable book!
I've always been a fan of fairy tales, as well as all things celtic, and so this particular book was pretty much perfect for me. It contains eight different stories, and I enjoyed seeing the similarities between these stories, and the myths and legends of other cultures. The way language was used was also intriguing, as there were several times that the phrasing seemed backwards; I can see, though, where these stories would benefit from being passed down orally through the generations - they just seem to flow better when read aloud. (Yes, I did read some of the passages aloud to myself, and my puppy, a Scottish Terrier; he seemed to enjoy them. *grin*)

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Fairy Tales

4-0 out of 5 stars Great way to get started!
My son in 6th grade had to write an essay regarding the 7th amendment, its history, impact today, legal cases regarding etc.I was unable to find sources for him to read that I didn't have to decipher legalese for him to understand frustrating him and me.My cousin, a librarian, recommended the book and once he read about his amendment he really began to enjoy his topic and easily wrote his paper without any more assistance from me.He even wanted to read about the 5th amendment which someone else in his class had to do.This book was a Great way to learn about a complicated amendment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vibrant writing makes a sometimes dull topic sparkle
In this well researched, well-written book, Krull describes the history of the Bill of Rights and remarks on its significance, historically and for our future. She begins by giving props to James Madison, the "100 pound giant" responsible for creating the Bill of Rights and goes on to relay the explanation behind each amendment, and weaving in recent issues to show how relevant the 462 words of the Bill of Rights still are today.3-0 out of 5 stars fairly readable, sometimes good, a bit biased.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide to Fairy Tales
A collection of fairy tales that have lasted throughout the years, "The Classic Fairy Tales" also offers many essays by the experts in fairy tale. The very best critics including Jack Zipes and Maria Tater, have written well-thought out essays varying from Disney's involvement in fairy tales to the sexuality of these tales. These essays along with the eight stories (Little Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Cinderella, Bluebeard, Hansel and Gretel, four short tales by Hans Christian Anderson, and three by Oscar Wilde) and you get a book which will help you understand not only the tales themselves, but the ideologies, social connections, and cultural importance. This book is definitely a good read.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Basis For Many Fairytales
An excellent book if you are struggling with the aquisition of variant sources for a particular fairy tale. A compendium of the well known, and the not so well know fairt tales, this book offers various incantations of 8 fary tales in their entirity. Following this, of particular interest to myself, are written criticisms and analysis of such tales by some of the most recognised names in fairy tale writing including Jack Zipes. Regardless of whether this book contains the tale you are looking for, the broader text that the book offers is certainly worth a look. A much more generalised idea is portrayed with regard to such topics as social origins, cultural resilience and the cultural implications and history of fairy tales as an independent genre. This book serves to bridge the gap between fairy tales that seem to bear no relationship to each other by looking at how these tales have come to be what they are.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent introduction to folklore
I was glad to find this volume, which offers different versions of popular fairy tales and shows their cultural variation. Commentary is helpful and to the point, with good bibliographical resources.I needed to find a guide to Cinderella stories and this gave me just what I needed and more. A good antidote to Bettelheim's overly Freudian interpretations of fairy tales. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good topics for further discussion with your teenage girl
I think this is a good present for most teenage girls because it opens the door to further thought and purposeful decisions. Even if one is not a feminist, one could appreciate the information on topics like why sports are important, how to stay safe at home/school/street, and why math & science equals a bright future.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!!A book to stop the dumbing down of young girls
How refreshing to read a book which helps to elevate, educate and emancipate young girls of the world. This book speaks to young girls in a very human and comprehensible way.It teaches them how to be strong, yet not overbearing, healthy not bulimic, educated, self-motivated and just all round good citzens of the world.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift idea for the girls in your life
I got this book for my niece for her birthday. She is an overachieving, talented pre-teen about to start middle school. I think this book will help prepare her for a lot of the challenges she is about to face.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bigoted, Biased Ballyhoo!
I would really like to know if Ms. Moore actually believes what she wrote, or simply did it for the money. Either way, the book is shameful and filled with inaccuracies, inuendo, half-truths and fabrications. If You Lived at the Time of the Civil War is a shining example of Political Correctness at its finest. Don't waste your money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
on this book, unless you wish to follow the mindless politically correct rewritten version of history that you find pretty much everywhere these days.I am a teacher, a historian, and a woman whose ancestors fought proudly for the Union Army. That said, I recognize this book for what it is.If you're really looking for something historically accurate, then you would better spend your money on books which detail - even for this age group - the War Between the States in much more realistic and honest terms. They are out there.Though I'm not quite as passionate as some of the reviewers below, I agree with their sentiment entirely. This book is simply fluff with almost no historical value - actually, it's worse than that, because it does perpetuate false stereotypes. It's especially bad because it's done in the guise of educational fiction.Shame on Scholastic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unrealistic book
While I will concede that the book is an easy read, it does talk down to the child and the book constantly contradicts itself.
