5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great story--nothing to do with Halloween
This is a great story that can help people of all ages, even though geared to children, understand the message of the Gospel in a creative way. This doesn't have to be associated with the celebration of Halloween.I know that many people who profess to be Christians still like to celebrate Halloween and feel that this story helps to tie it to their faith. That shouldn't make this a bad book for those who don't think Halloween has a place in the lives of Christians.Putting a face on a pumpkin to do something fun during fall harvest is a spiritually neutral activity. It just doesn't have to be about Halloween.I am glad that people like Ms Higgs take the time to do something positive for this time of year--something that takes the focus OFF of Halloween.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just a thought on the book
I think it's wonderful book and I'm a christian. Everything was made by god including pumpkins and carving pumpkins is fun. It does not have to be evil and the fact that you can do it and teach your child about god is wonderful. Just wondering if the people who judge the book as trying to turn evil into good buy christmas trees and decorate them?? Did you know that is also a Pagan tradition with roots not honoring god?? How many Christians buy and decorate Christmas trees?? I would say step back and look more closely at yourself before judging others. In the Bible we are not bound by law but by grace. How can anything that teaches about god be sinful?? It does not matter what people did thousands of years ago but it does matter that we honor god in our words and actions today. I don't see the harm in this book. ... Read more

"She was homeschooling gone amok." "She was an alien." "Her parents werecircus acrobats." These are only a few of the theories concocted to explainStargirl Caraway, a new 10th grader at Arizona's Mica Area High School who wearspioneer dresses and kimonos to school, strums a ukulele in the cafeteria, laughswhen there are no jokes, and dances when there is no music. The whole school, not exactly a"hotbed of nonconformity," is stunned by her, including our 16-year-old narratorLeo Borlock: "She was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for Young Children
I bought this book two years ago when my husband and I separated. It was the perfect story to tell my 3 year old son while we transitioned to our new situation. After the first couple readings, it went back on the shelf for almost a year. Now that he's 5, it's regained popularity. I even heard HIM read it to his cousin to explain why he has two homes while his cousin only has one. It seems to be a good way for him to share his situation with his young friends. A true gift! Thank you Claire Masurel!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have for 3-5 year olds... and comes with a lasting title!
Of the several separated-parenting/divorce children's books I got, this one really stood out at least apologetic and most encouraging of stability and normalcy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Two of everything ~ including parents!
It is an excellent book! The biggest reason why I like it is that it is a neutral book ~ the child has two of everything ~ it doesn't convey the child lives with one parent and visits the other parent. I really like this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Susan Ashley, Ph.D. Author of The ADD and ADHD Answer Book
As a child psychologist who has been helping children with their social skills for over 20 years now, I use this very book in my social skills group therapy.Parents can read this with their child or give it to their child to read alone.Great for children with AD/HD, ODD and Asperger's....all of whom get teased and rejected by their peers. If your child needs this book he or she would probably benefit from a social skills group too.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST SELF-HELP BOOK FOR KIDS ...

Editorial Review

Wanda Petronski lives way up in shabby Boggins Heights, and she doesn't have any friends. Every day she wears a faded blue dress, which wouldn't be too much of a problem if she didn't tell her schoolmates that she had a hundred dresses at home--all silk, all colors, and velvet, too. This lie--albeit understandable in light of her dress-obsessed circle--precipitates peals of laughter from her peers, and she never hears the end of it. One day, after Wanda has been absent from school for a few days, the teacher receives a note from Wanda's father, a Polish immigrant: "Dear teacher: My Wanda will not come to your school any more. Jake also. Now we move away to big city. No more holler Polack. No more ask why funny name. Plenty of funny names in the big city. Yours truly, Jan Petronski." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good read for any young girl
I read this when I was really young and it had a serious impact on my life and the way I treated others. This is a short book meant for kids who are under 12 years old but it's equally powerful even for adults and carries a strong message. I have met a lot of catty, shallow women and girls in my life (no names here) who should read this book. It has a very good lesson about kindness, not judging others and standing up for what is right. It's a sad story with a bittersweet ending. Though I wished the ending had more closure, the message is still strong and I would not change the story. I think kids will learn a great deal from this story, things like: Don't judge others on how they look or what they have. Be kind to people because you never know when they will be gone. Don't say anything to anyone that you may regret later. Above all, never underestemate people's talent or brains. This story is old but timeless!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE HUNDRED DRESSES: What is it about?
First off, I want to start with saying that this book is not about lying but the hazards of peer pressure and teasing. Wanda Pertoniski was different and because of this she suffered the indignities of being teased and ostracized from any real normal life. She was an easy target for the more popular and socially acceptable girls of her school. Wanda was quite and reserved, never really stood up for herself. One day she announced to all that heard that she had a hundred of the most beautiful dresses in her closet at home. The reality of it was that while she did have dresses in her closet they were not in actuality real. They were pictures that she had created. To take this as a lie is not properly correct.

Editorial Review

Until Chrysanthemum started kindergarten, she believed her parents when they said her namewas perfect. But on the first day of school, Chrysanthemum begins to suspect that her name is far less thanperfect, especially when her class dissolves into giggles upon hearing her name read aloud. That evening,Chrysanthemum's parents try to piece her self-esteem back together again with comfort food and a nightfilled "with hugs, kisses, and Parcheesi." But the next day Victoria, a particularly observant and mean-spirited classmate, announces that Chrysanthemum's name takes up 13 letters. "That's half the letters in thealphabet!" she adds. Chrysanthemum wilts. Pretty soon the girls are making playground threats to "pluck" Chrysanthemum and "smell her."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU REALLY CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS ONE
What a wonderful, sensitive and timely book.School is hard for kids.It is harder for some than others, but all children go through some sort of ordeal similar to our little heroine mouse. If not, then they are the kids that are dishing out the grief and need the lesson this book teaches even more than the child that is taking all the teasing.Eather way, this is a good work, excellent to read to the class as a whole or excellent to read with your child one on one.The illustrations are great and very much go with the text. This is one of my favorites, but more importantly, it seems to be the favorite of many of the children at the school.Recommend this one highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to start a new school year
This story is sweet and a great way to start off a new school year talking about names of our new friends and classmates.Story lends itself to discussions about feelings, friendships, as well as activities in math and language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mercedes
My daughter Mercedes had a very similar experience. She loved her name until children started teasing her about having a "car" for a name. She was also frequently disturbed by the fact that she could never find anything with her name printed on it. This story helped her remember how special her name is. Just like her! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book about real life
This book is a very good book that puts you inside of 11 year old Parvana's shoes. It depicts the horrors of life under the taliban rule well. While it is grusome, the auther shows the horrors without too much detail, so it is safe for younger readers, though i wound not recemend it to anyone younger than 10. You see life in this war torn land from the eyes of a girl worring about her father in jail, while forced to hide her true identity so her family can survive.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Egypt Game
This book The Egypt Game is really interesting. At the beginning you get bored, but don't stop reading because later this book will get really good. April is a girl who moved with her grandma for some reasons. She meets a girl and her brother and they discover a very funny game. One day something occurs and they cannot go out to play out for a long time. It wasn't a day or two it was more than a week. Before they were three members who are in the game and at the end they are six. During the time they were in Egypt strange things begin to happen when they get back to play.
3-0 out of 5 stars highly recommended
I think this is a good book because there is alot of adventure. The book would be diffucult if you are a lower level reader. This book was challenging to me because I don't know much about Egypt yet.It is a good book becuase it makes the kids look like they are going to get in alot of troble but they really dont because the old man is so nice. That is why I recommend The Egypt Game.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book is terrific. I think that the best books for kids, are the ones that are filled with interesting characters, magic and imaginative play. In this book, six children come together and begin the fascinating game of Egypt, where the ordinary becomes extrordinary, where the kids become high priests and priestesses who guard the secrets of egypt! Interwoven are the kid's individual struggles, and how they overcome them. This book is wonderful because it encourages kids to explore the amazing world of creative play themselves, and also (in opposition to one of the reviews) can enrich a class that is learning about Egypt, because who cares about the facts of Egypt, its all about the magic, which these kids are so fascinated with. A must read for kids and anyone who enjoys great kids literature. ... Read more

I really loved this book as I do her others as well including: The Truth About Forever, This Lullaby, Dreamland, Someone Like You, and That Summer. She is a truly amazing writer that indulges so deeply into the subconscience of the main character and shows you the journey that they have to go through to grow, learn, develope, and share. Each book always reminds me something in my own life and is therefore easy to relate to.Her books are not only for young adults but for adults especially women who have children or don't because anyone can relate to these stories of growing up.She is a truly inspirational writer and this was a great book.I couldn't put it down and read it in 4 and a half hours. ... Editorial Review

Author Wilson Rawls spent his boyhood much like the character of this book, Billy Colman, roaming the Ozarks of northeastern Oklahoma with his bluetick hound. A straightforward, shoot-from-the-hip storyteller with a searingly honest voice, Rawls is well-loved for this powerful 1961 classic and the award-winning novel Read more

I really liked the book and it is a very fun interesting book to read. I really liked that it had to do with some sort of sport. I also liked it because it was book were there was all source of action. There was a little boy that lived in the hills and dream of having two coon hounds. He finally worked and saved enough money to buy himself two. He was so excited to get them that he trained them to hunt. The characters were very believable and never doubted that they were making them up. The plot was very interesting because it was about the kid entering a big coon hunt. He won the competition by treeing four coons with his dogs. The major themes of the story were when on of the Prichard brothers accidentally stabbed himself. The author used a very special way of imagery. He made everything be visual in my head. I was all into the story that I didn't want to stop reading. I didn't like by were sometimes they didn't talk about when the dogs killed the coons and how they treed them. They would sometimes leave you think what would happen next or what could of happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Geez!
I adore this book. I wrote a reviw on what I think of it a while ago, so you could find it later. But I'm sick of all these people saing there was no action or adventure. What's up with that? And to the people who say there are lost of grammer mistakes in the book, you should check your grammer.

4-0 out of 5 stars a spectacular book

5-0 out of 5 stars Realizing their impact
I purchased several copies of this book, a copy for my children and one for each of their classrooms as a gift. This book is easily read by children and to children. It clearly explains the impact of their actions on others and to THEMSELVES and then gives them the choice of what they want to occur in their world.A very basic introduction to the "ripple effect" on world peace.I would also recommend similar books by this same author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids!
This is a fabulous book on autism acceptance. This is great for teachers or parents that want their kids to better understand someone that is "different" than the others. It is well written and really presents a creative way of introducing Autism and other spectrum disorders to kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have.
I purchased this book after reading the reviews. Our seven year old son is on the Autism Spectrum and his daycare friends had lots of questions about his behaviors and his limited language skills.I brought this book in for the teacher to read. The comment from the teacher was "They got it."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best book for Kids to Understand
I bought this book for my sons K-1 class. The book explains what autism is on a level for young children to understand and the kids loved the coloring aspect of it. His teacher loved the adult explainations of each page. My 8 year old borrowed the book to read to his 2nd grade class so that they could understand his brother! I read this book to my Introdution to Early Childhood class and my teacher agreed, this book should be purchased. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone whose child is going into a different learning environment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stress Relief
This book is great for any child whether you think they are stressed or not.Ask any teacher if the children in their class are stressed out and you'll hear "yes".My 2nd grader was showing signs of stress and anxiety about school by Sunday night. This book is helping both of us understand how to manage stress.I have supplemented this book with a wonderful stress management CD called "Indigo Dreams".My daughter loves following the muscular relaxation and breathing techniques with the characters in the stories. These are both a must have for any child.

Based on the reviews, I expected something much better. This is not a book that as a professional, I found to be very useful.

Editorial Review

Parents will be quick to jump to the conclusion that there can benothing appealing in a tale of an ugly kid who breaks things. And certainly--from that adult perspective--there's something off-putting about the illustrations of David, with his potato head, feral eyes, and a maniacal grin that exposes ferociously pointed teeth. But 3- and 4-year-olds see things differently, and will find his relentless badness both funny and liberating."No, David," wails the off-stage mother, as David reaches for the cookie jar. "No! No! No!" as he makes a swamp out of the bathroom. "Come back here, David!" as he runs naked down the street. Each vivid double-page illustration is devoted to a different youthful indiscretion and a different vain parental plea. Readers will be amused to know that the protagonist's name is no accident: award-winning writer-illustrator David Shannon wrote the book after discovering a similar effort that he had made, again with himself at the center of each drawing, at the age of 5. 5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, David, I love you
I don't know why my sixteen-month old daugter loves this book.Perhaps it's the repetition, or illustrations, or the emphasis with which the phrases are read.I DO know that she now has an insatiable interest in books, uses the word 'no' appropriately, and anticipates the resolution at the end of this and "David Gets in Trouble."
5-0 out of 5 stars It makes my kids laugh with delight, that makes it a five for me
Some reviewers take this stuff way too seriously! The book is hilarious, my kids giggle everytime they read it.And, my three year old can read it, which makes her feel great.David isn't evil, I don't see him portrayed as evil, and if he is, my kids are evil also because lord knows they have done almost everything in there themselves, the lesson is that we love and adore our kids even if they are misbehaving!

5-0 out of 5 stars kids LOVE it
I didn't really get this book at first since there is little writing and just these big, somewhat scary illustrations.Just goes to show you that children's books are FOR CHILDREN, because my kids, 4 and 2, LOVE David. They scream and giggle when they see the bad things he's doing, and throughout the day they will "remind" themselves not to do something "bad like David."They can look at the illustrations and create whole stories out of one page.I think that is what the beauty of the book is truly about. As I started reading it with them, I became charmed by the crude, simple drawings, and just how expressive David is, even though he's not more than a stick figure. The first time we read it, I just read the words on each page.I had to explain one or two pictures, but they completely got the ending themselves. The very next time, I asked them what they thought was going on in each picture and they went crazy telling me all about the things David was doing, and why that's not allowed and what he should be doing instead! They truly never tire of this story, and I wouldn't have guessed that at all when I first picked this title up.Contrary to what some other reviewers said, David doesn't inspire bad behavior or copycat actions. That's the whole point of reading it with them.I don't think some of the other books in the series are as inspired as this first one, but that may just be because I was spoiled by how much we all love this one. ...
