5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for both parent & child to read.
This book should be a requirement in every home.It is wriiten for a teen but shoul dbe read by both parent and child. The concept of the 40 assets is fundamentally simple. The book defines the assets and then gives adviceon how the adolescent, parent(s), community, school, and congregation canhelp to ensure that a child is brought up with all of the assets they needto be a successful person. It has examples of the successes thatcommunities across the country have had setting the concepts of the assetsinto into motion. The excellence of the book is reinforced by a lecture Iattended by Dr. Benson 2 months ago.The concept of the developmentalassets being the framework for a successful, well-rounded person makesperfect sense. It should be adopted as a National standard.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for teens and their parents!
We like the book so much that we are adopting the asset building concepts featured!Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Anxious Billy-Bully.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Dear god please think of the Children" or "Falafel."
Amazon truly did you all a favor by mercifully offering you an excerpt of ten whole pages of Mr. O'Reilly's book. This was a luxury I was not given, and now I can't help but feel it's too late for my poor soul. I stomached the whole enchilada, and I warn you this is one Mexican (or wet-back, as Mr. O'Reilly ocassionally refers to people of Mexican origin) dish you do NOT wish to tackle. The first ten pages alone tell you exactly what kind of person Bill O'Reilly is. It is obvious that this iteration of this children's edition of his wildlyasinine "The O'Reilly Factor" is just another attempt to gouge his enamored viewers for more money. This book offers no real advice that cannot be already garnored by the occasional disney channel blurb or the elusive "common sense." It takes him two precious pages to explain to his obviously mentally ill readers that "real friends" are not anything like those on the show "Friends." Being a fan of the show I have to agree with O'Reilly, but then I'd be forced to ask "What the hell Bill?!" He recently settled a lawsuit pressed against him for a rumored $10 million by a Ms. Mackris for sexual harassment. He attempts to teach our children about sex, but is himself a barely disguised chauvenist and borderline deviant. His previous "The O'Reilly Factor" has it's own section on sex. Here he shows just how little respect for woman and boastfully describes many of his "sexual conquests." In his fiction novel "Those Who Tresspass" he self inserts himself as an irresistable and dangerous womanizer. Feel free to use the main character in this novel as a personality guide for O'Reilly himself. He is desperately and consistently seeking admiration from his audience. It's both sad and sickening. He barely alludes to his "rambunctious" childhood misadventures with his friends, trying to pass by his readers what he "learned" from those experiences. However, both his massively (depressingly) popular cable "news" show and his series of near toxic books reveal a man borderline insane. He's rediculously angry at the most obnoxiously inane things, a chronic liar, and has the memory span of an 80 year old hamster with alzheimers. He will literally make points in this book and provide evidence that counters his own argument. His show is no different. He will make wildly offensive comments. When his callers call him up on it, he has his chronies "replay the tape." Of course, in the year 2006 we are completely unable to actually replay this tape on modern television for viewers, as you can see when his chronies shout back off camera a completely different statement. He has never apologized for his actions, only grunting with simian aggression and angrily moving on to the next segment. This man cannot hold multiple marriages, yet he attempts to teach children about relationships. Mr. O'Reilley is to televised journalism what pornography is professional photography. Any person who truly consider themselves a conservative should be horrified by how he represents the demographic. A recent example is of a jewish man who called into his show to make his case that having Christmas during school as he grew up made him feel uncomfortable because he felt constantly pressured to be more Christian. O'Reilly responded by telling the man that if he didn't want to live in a Christian nation he should move to Israel. Any truly religious person whether Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or Buddhist should find a comment like this wildly offensive. Well, perhaps the Buddhists will let that one go. In a country where religious freedom is one of it's main tenets, perhaps O'Reilly would be advised to know that a marginal amount of secularism in public and government institution is necessary for religious freedom. The founding fathers considered religion a largely personal matter, as did Jesus. "Render unto Caesar's what is Caesar's."
5-0 out of 5 stars During breaks in bingo....
...I read this book.I find it a pleasant diversion (like Mr. O'Reilly himself) as well during those all-too-frequent shuffleboard lulls. If he'd been born a century or so earlier, Bill would've been one of those "shoot from the hip" type of fellows; pity then that he wasn't.I like Bill. That's a clear as I can make it.So I figured I'd turn my kids on to him -- sounds innocent enough, right?Wrong. See, my kids hated this book.Mocked it.Made it an ongoing joke at every dinner table since."But Bill has some good advice," I pleaded with them over chips and salsa one leathery afternoon, "he's a real shoot from the hip guy, kids".Doh! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Interesting Story
This book is what I've come to expect from Shannon Hale: good story, good characters, good writing, and a good ending.I've loved the previous books in this series The Goose Girl and Enna Burning and was not let down by this story.Rizo is a great character who undergoes a lot of changes as he discovers himself in this book.My favorite part of Shannon Hale's books is that they are prefect faire tales without being overly fantastical or magical. There is just a sprinkle of magic and good common sense. While I think her previous book would be good for boys and girls this book is the first with a male lead and may bring her books to the attention of more young men.Overall, I think this is a great story for both kids and adults.I highly recommend it, but if your new to the series you may want to start at the beging so nothing is given away.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still good, But not Shannon's best
River secrets was very good, about Razo, who you may remember if you read the other bayern books. This is still a good book, but i suggest you read the others first. Enna Burning is the best and The goose girl is also good, but river secrets is no where as good as those.

5-0 out of 5 stars River Secrets
Shannon Hale is the perfect author; her writing is funny, exciting, suspenseful, and original.

I never cared for that Mutts comic strip in the newspapers.Too cute and not funny.Maybe it's because I'm an adult. And maybe I have no excuse for reading the comics at all at this point.I don't know. But McDonnell's characters and light touch work well in this context, in a kid's book.
5-0 out of 5 stars *** simply enchanting ***
Recommended for anyone, any age, i.e., everyone ~~ Patrick Mc'Donnell's comic-book is a gift that I imagine anyone would want to receive. The Gift of Nothing is warm, crystal clear and gently instructive. It's a little story about giving a very big gift, of the self.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living Lessons! Student from North Bay, NY
Every Living Thing, by Cynthia Rylant, is a wonderful read for any middle school student. This book is full of many short stories, each story taught me a great deal of respect and responsibility, which added to my maturity. This book includes 12 stories. The 1st story is called "Slower Than The Rest." In this story a boy wins an award for the first time ever! The 2nd story is called "Retired." Retired is about a retired 4th grade teacher who becomes very mean and cruel and does not like kids after a couple years of retirement. Well, that is until one of her friends end up having to move to France and they can not take their dog with them, so they give the dog to the teacher and then she becomes very kind, friendly, and loving to children again. "Papa's Parrot" is the 3rd story. This story is about a father and a son who become closer than ever when papa ends up in the hospital. This event brought father and son closer together. "Boar out There" is the 4th story. This story is about a young little girl named Jenny, who gets injured badly by a wild boar. But after getting injured the boar tour his nose really bad and he is still running free today. "A Pet" is the 5th story. This story is about a little girl named Emma. One day Emma asked her mom and dad if she can have a pet but they said no. Well one day Emma came home from school and she found a surprise in her room, it was a fish. Emma was so happy she jumped for joy and was happy her parents listened to her about giving her a pet. These are just a few of the tales in this wonderful collection of short stories.Cynthia Rylant is also the author of Henry and Mudge books.Be sure to pick up any book by this fine author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Touching stories about people and animals
"Every Living Thing," by Cynthia Rylant, is a collection of 12 short stories. Although different characters appear in each tale, the collection as a whole is unified by style and by theme. Each story deals with an encounter or ongoing relationship between a human being and one or more non-human animals. Since the book is only 81 pages long, each tale is quite brief.5-0 out of 5 stars For lovers of animals and people!!`
Wonderful stories!!Life as it is!! Having read these stories aloud to adults in nursing homes on numerous occassionandfound them to satisfy our need to hear good resolves, we can all recommend this good read. "A Bad Road for Cats", one of the favorites, that hits the hardrealities of human relationships and good resolves in our dealing withothers when things aren't right.Stories of people finding there waythrough realationships with others and the place that animals play in ourlives to make bridges.Read them! This book is an excellent way to show and discuss anger with a child.
2-0 out of 5 stars Mixed messages
I bought this book for my daughter who shares the same name as the girl in the book, thinking it would be neat for her to read a book with her name in it. Anyhow, the story starts out with Sophie's mother allowing her sister to be inexplicably unfair to her, and this is why Sophie gets "Really, Really Angry."
5-0 out of 5 stars Fifteen riveted 4-year-olds
I watched this book being presented to a class of behaviorally challenged 4-year olds. Circle time is never quiet with this group but this book had them so silent after about 3/4 of the book one boy asked "why is everyone so quiet?" I think this book is great for kids with high stress levels and emotional problems; the kids really internalized it. They came up with ways they deal with anger with essentialy no prompting. It's rare to find a book that really accesses kids emotions like this one. If you have a child who is high strung or has anger issues, this book seems to be a great access point. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"My father, without the slightest doubt, was the most marvelous and exciting father any boy ever had." Danny feels very lucky. He adores his life with his father, living in a gypsy caravan, listening to his stories, tending their gas station, puttering around the workshop, and occasionally taking off to fly home-built gas balloons and kites. His father has raised him on his own, ever since Danny's mother died when he was four months old. Life is peaceful and wonderful... until he turns 9 and discovers his father's one vice. Soon Danny finds himself the mastermind behind the most incredible plot ever attempted against nasty Victor Hazell, a wealthy landowner with a bad attitude. Can they pull it off? "Danny Champion of the world" was a great book. If you like Rold Dahl, you will like this a lot. This book is about a boy and his father who live in a gas station in England, with their land bordering Mr.Victor Hazel's, a mean rich man who owns a beer brewery and is a rotton mean old man. Danny finds out about his father's deepest secret-he is a poacher. He does this to get back at Victor Hazel. Danny discovers the spectacular world of poaching, and he and his father have a blast together. You should read this book!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Danny the Champion of the World is a great book. Of all the Roald Dahl books, I think this is one of the best. This book is about Danny a nine year old boy and his father. Danny thinks he knows everything about his wonderful dad until one night when Danny's dad isn't in his bunk. Danny starts to panic and waits on the caravan steps. He sees his father coming and is so happy that he is back. Danny is about to be let on the bigest secret that his father has. He is a poacher. This is a great book for all ages. Have fun reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good start in addressing bullying and social skills problems
I use this book as a read-aloud with my first grade students. The illustrations are great, and the book is right at their level. It is a fun way to show good and poor social behavior, and my students ask me to read it again and again. It helps them internalize what it takes to make friends.

A young girl Ashley shares her pleasure with her friend and a wise bumblebee named Ruby Lee who, much to Ashley's surprise, talks to her. Mrs. Wagner asks Ashley to help her by potting some flowers for her patio, but Ashley is afraid she will do it wrong. I purchased this CD prior to a family roadtrip last spring, having no prior exposure to Arnold Lobel, or Frog & Toad. My 6-year old son and 4-year old daughter were quick converts. They easily follow the stories, laugh at the absurdities of the characters' sweet friendship. They constantly requested it to be played in the car whenever we were out and about. Since then, we have also purchased "Mouse Tales" on CD, which they also adore. Intelligent, engaging, & fun.

Editorial Review

Frog and Toad agreed: it was a perfect day for a swim. And Frog was kind enough not to look at Toad in his bathing suit, per Toad's request. But when the swimming was over, a crowd had gathered to see Toad in his funny-looking suit, and neither Frog nor Toad could make them leave. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the beginning of a beautiful friendship.....
this book came out in 1970......it truly showed me what a really great childrens book should be.......the five stories are about friendship as it should be in real life but it's not......this will truly enlighten anyone who reads it...adult or child.......

4-0 out of 5 stars Endearing
This is a very sweet book. Some of the stories seem to not have point at the end, but that's probably because I'm looking at them from an adult female point of view.Other stories are endearing.A sweet, sweet book that teaches what it is to be a good friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars The simple but true-to-human-life stories and the drawings are a delight.
It's so wonderful to have a book that a very young child can read himself, and then ask the adult, or other reader, with whom he is sitting, for help with difficult words. When I was a kid, 65 years ago, we only read the simplest of books, with no real relationships, because we were expected to read them without help. Frog and Toad have it all over Dick and Jane!

5-0 out of 5 stars good for kids and grownups
This picture book addresses and validates the many ways a person might grieve. It talks about loss of all kinds, but I find it an apt gift for people who have lost a loved one.It does not explain death to a very young child. It does describe the process of grieving to anyone old enough to understand that something profound has happened. It's hard to gush over a book on this topic, but when it's needed this is a wonderful gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of TEAR SOUP
Excellent book for all ages! The illustrations are beautiful, very detailed and yet soft, depicting the depth and gravity of the content. The subject matter is one to which even very young children can relate. The book validates feelings of loss and sorrow, showing that sad experiences and emotions are part of the human condition. And yet the message is not one of utter devastation, but one of kindness and ultimate hope in the continuing process of living.A Must-Have book for everyone!

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware - Not for Young Children
This book has been read to my child who is 3 years old.Because of this book my chold has not been able to attend daycare for 2 weeks. This book has made him scared of everything. My son has always been very independent and now he won't do anything without someone there with him.Because of this book it has turned our very relaxed independent child into a very scared and paranoid child.

T. J. Jones is black, Japanese, and white; his given name is The Tao(honest!), and he's the son of a woman who abandoned him when she got heavilyinto crack and crank. As a child he was full of rage, but now as a senior inhigh school he's pretty much overcome all that. With the help of a goodtherapist and his decent, loving, ex-hippie adoptive parents, he's not onlyfairly even-keeled, he has turned out to be smart and funny. Read more

Chris Crutcher, Whale Talk (Dell, 2001)
3-0 out of 5 stars The best book
Whale Talk is a very interesting book, even though it is boring in the beginning and I almost brought the book back and almost picked another book to read but I decided not to and I'm glad I didn't because this is a great book. Its about a colored boy named T.J who was adopted because his mother did drugs and he was adopted to a mother who is a lawyer and he also has a dad and they are both very nice and they always wanted a kid but never could have one. T.J likes to swim, so he gets people together to make a swim team and a reason why he is doing this is because he wants him and the other people on his team to have there own letter jackets, because in there school you cant where a letter jacket unless you earned it by doing a sport or activity. So T.J gets a swim team together and the people on his swim team are people who dot really fit in with other people at school but they all get to know each other and become friends.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book.
Whale Talk is about a teenager named T.J. Jones. He has a very hard and unhappy childhood, his mother leaves him and someone adopts him. The parents that adopted him are very nice and kind. His dad looks like a crazy biker, but is actually a soft-hearted man, especially when it comes to kids. His mom is a lawyer and helps T.J. alot. The storyline is basically T.J. trying to start a swimming team. He tries to gain more members and it the end he gets a swim team filled with misfits. They work hard and get to know each other good. The book ends with a surprising chapter, and it teaches T.J. a big lesson.
