5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book-
When my son was approaching his 12th birthday, he was forgetting the good manners he had before - everything was a "joke" for him, however, I was afraid he could be offending people, friends, with his behavior.I gave him this book for his birthday. When he read the title "How Rude" he got mad.Later, I saw him taking this book to his room and saw him reading it.Since then, every night he was reading a part.A week later he confessed that this was a great book and he thanked me for it.Any guidance from parents sounds like "nagging" - this book guides teenegers (and pre-teens)giving them good tips.Needless to say, my son improved a lot - he's back to "normal" and we all read this book because is very funny.I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious But A Bit Immoral
At 465 pages, this nonfiction book is longer than many fiction books. Who knew there was so much to say about manners? But apparently, there is, and Dr. Packer deals with it in a light, amusing way that had me laughing so hard I actually fell on the floor. It also includes some valuable information known to few -i.e. "don't floss your teeth before having sex".
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Most teenagers will love this book but not all. One grandson and one granddaughter thought it was very helpful, a third grandchild did not like it. It deals with real kids' issues and problems and gives then actual things they can say, as well as what not to say.It even has some very good advice for how teenagers can talk to their parents.Best of all, it has lots of humor in it.We read parts of it aloud with a teenage grandson and we were all laughing. It has good advice for non-teenagers too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting personal library book
This is a nice book that compliments the Quiltmaker's Gift. The illustrations are wonderful, the story is okay.It has a great beginning, but then it seems to rush through to explain why the woman chose to live the way she did, which is the most important lesson in the book.Still, it is a nice story with excellent illustrations.I think I enjoyed it more than my child, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This is a beautifully illustrated and wonderfully well written story of the transformation that occurred in the girl who became the Quiltmaker. This is a prequel to The Quiltmaker's Gift, another outstanding book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Quiltmaker Story
Jeff Brumbeau has another potential award winner with The Quiltmaker's Journey.A great story about how the Quiltmaker came to be, he continues the theme of the original book that giving of oneself and caring for others illuminates our lives with love.Gail de Marken's illustrations are, again, timeless and her familiarity with the art of quilting lends authenticity to the quilt blocks dotting the pages of this wonderfult story. The Quiltmaker's Journey will win the hearts of young and old alike and if you happen to be a quilter, too, that just sweetens the deal. ... I loved this book so much it teaches alot in 1 book!!!!! This book is 2 much 4 words...i just loved it!

4-0 out of 5 stars A-List 4: Tall Cool One
This book was very interesting, but not the best. First, I thought that Danny and Anna were gonna get together but he's in the beginning, and then he just disappears. Where did he go? I was also confused because this used to be kinda like a teenage soap opera and now this book was... a mystery in mexico. Different, but I should give Zoey Dean some credit for not writing the same old thing every book. But it was a great read, even though it was kinda different. The series is still awesome, and I still read the next book. So all is well, I'll just say it wasn't as great as the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, No Ben!
I was so happy! Finally obnixous Ben was gone! I loved when Sam and Anna got lost in the desert and found that house, but i also reallly wanted to know whos house it was. I loved how it wasn't all set in Beverly Hills and i loved all the descripiton. My favorite charcter was Lloyd because he was so werid. That drink that Sam and Anna drank that made them high is kind of like potscheen. ( Though i sure have never tried it.) I loved this book and you will too! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Profound, but profane
Looking for Alaska is a page turner. Did Alaska commit suicide or was her death a tragic accident? Why did she become so upset and drive off drunk in the middle of the night? The biggest question of all was Alaska's: "How will we ever get out of this labyrinth of suffering?" Pudge's answer to this question in his essay at the end of the book is profoundly true. For its mystery and truth, I loved this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Pay itforward"
There is a movement in the land that emphasizes "random acts of kindness". Much like the proverbial pebble thrown into still water, creating a series of ripples, any thoughtful gesture can have an effect on those around us. This is exactly what happens in One Smile, as a joyful little girl smiles at a discouraged young man sitting on a park bench. Little does the child know that her beatific smile will inspire the young man to start looking for a job.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous New Children's Book
Katie is a happy young girl who is skipping through the park one morning with her Mother, when she meets up with an unhappy young man. She gives him a bright smile, and soon the young man is smiling as well. As the day goes on, the young man fixes a woman's flat tire, and she smiles, then leaves an extra big tip for the waitress at a restaurant, and she smiles, and so on and so on. Proving that ONE SMILE can go a very long way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Educator Favorite
What can one smile do? Quite a lot as we find out in this noteworthy tale. The story begins with Katie walking with her mother through the park. She thoughtfully bestows a bright smile on a forlorn, out-of-work young man sitting on a park bench. It inspires the young man to begin looking for a new job. While doing so, he sees a woman whose car has a flat tire. He changes the tire for her. She, in turn, leaves a large tip for a waitress. This continues on until, eventually, the good feelings inspired by Katie's smile comes back to her and her mother. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiuly written story...but
I Just finished this book after a 3 day marathon read. I bought it on a whim after readng the jacket, which had no synopsis. I found that I was slightly put off by the fact that this was a Holocaust novel written from the perspective of a child. I eventually got over that and got sucked into the story. It is a very easy read, sometimes TOO easy considering the subject matter. Overall this book was very well written. It approaches a very difficult subject with compassion and sensitivity. My only caution... do not read this book if you're looking for an in depth Holocaust story.

1-0 out of 5 stars Compare this book with "Emil and Karl" by Glatshteyn
If you are looking for a book for middle school to high school readers that challenges them to think about the real experiences of children in a brutal fascist state, I would skip this one and read instead "Emil and Karl", written by Yankev Glatschteyn in 1940 and only recently translated in English. It is also short, also features two naive 9-year-old boys, also gives multiple points of view, and also seems to be trying to send out a wake-up call to young people. The difference is that Emil and Karl is well-written, moving, accurate, and full of well-rounded characters across the spectrum of opinions and backgrounds, while "The boy in the striped pajamas" is maudlin, insulting, shallow, and inaccurate. It would be good for a literature teacher to assign both books, and let the students see for themselves the difference between quality literature and trash. Don't waste your money on Boyne's weak attempt.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book could have offered so much more
After reading a brief synopsis of the book, I was interested enough to purchase it.The Holocaust from the point of a child would have been a truly good story, but the character of this book is made into a downright idiot. His father was a Commandant, he was taught to salute Hitler, but somehow his parents never got around to telling him about Hitler, the Jews, the "master" race???I asked the six year old across the street and he knew more about the Holocaust than the main character did.The author is a wonderful storyteller, and that kept me reading to the end.The ending, however, felt far too contrived. It's as if by making the story end this way, the author somehow equalizes things out.I was disappointed that what could have been a truly excellent book was trivialized by the ending.I have mixed feelings about recommending this book.Yes, it is a good plot, but executed in such a way that I feel the author almost played it too safe for fear of upsetting anyone, and in the process, educating no one.For children today so removed from this part of history, the author could have done so much more to make them understand. If you are looking for a book for you or your child, this makes for a quick read, but not a thought-provoking one. ... Editorial Review

"Miss Fannie has lots of hats. And each one is her favorite." At age 99,Miss Fannie has much history--and even more hats. She was wearing her greenvelour hat when she witnessed a terrible flood in 1916. Her wide-brimmed felthat with the gleaming black feather reminds her of the hawk she caught to keepit from killing her hens and biddies. But her pink straw hat with silk rosestruly is her favorite. For 35 years she's worn this hat to church every EasterSunday, and "it always makes her feel brand-new, like Easter itself." She's notthe only one who thinks it's special. When her handsome young preacher asks herto donate a hat to the church auction, Miss Fannie knows what she has to do. Shetakes a deep breath, thinks of her favorite verse from the Bible, "With God, allthings are possible," and wraps up her pink straw hat. But she doesn't realizejust how much Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Miss Fannie's Hat
This enchanting story relays a simple yet most valuable message about sharing, being unselfish, and caring more for others than yourself. Fannie experiences, first-hand, the joy of giving and the often-unexpected pleasure you realize from it. In keeping with Jan Karon's other work, the text is finely crafted and carefully worded to create interest and hold the attention of the reader. The illustrations add to the charm and delight of the volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a gem!
This book tells a wonderful story and demonstrates great worth and value of senior citizens.Uses lots of descriptive terms and illustrates some of the main character's memories from a long-past time period. Excellent for use in a Sunday School or Christian school setting.

This short, well put together story is for children of all ages. It's very different from Jan Karon's "Tale of an Honest Bunny" or "The Trellis Seed."I read this to my six year old son. When we finished, he actually sighed and said, "What a nice story."I then shared it with my mother who called me crying saying it was beautiful.I highly reccomend it. ... Shabanu enjoys the pleasures of her childhood with her playmate and camel, Gulaband.Shabanu draws alot of strength and encouragement from her Auntie Sharma, a single-parent, when it becomes a matter of survival for the family and the adults begin making decisions of major consequence.
4-0 out of 5 stars Shabanu: great read for some.
My son is 12 and had to read the book for a 7th grade project on diversity. He loved the book. It truly depends on the child, and his/her reading abilities if it is going to be a great experience or a boring one. I think it is a appropriate book for a middle school reading list.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jillian's review
Shabanu is the story of a girl named Shabanu and her sister Phulan, who lived in India. Both girls will be promised to marry a man when they are of age whether they like it or not. Shabanu was to marry Murad and Phulan was to marry Hamir, and both were happy. That's the end, right? Wrong! When tragedy strikes, Shabanu is forced to marry a 53 year old man named Rahim-Sahbib, who she does not want to marry. If she refuses to marry him, Nazir Mohammed, Rahim-Sahbib's brother, will make Shabanu and Phulan's lives miserable. Will Shabanu go against her families beliefs and follow her heart, or will she do what she is told? Read it to find out! I liked Shabanu a lot, because it has a great message. Also, I really liked the character of Shabanu, because she was a strong character and I like how she wanted to be herself. I would recommend this book to [...] and up, because of some hard to understand language and inappropriate content. ... Read more

The Birchbark House (originally published in 1999) is the story of a year in the life of a seven-year-old girl and her Ojibwa family, living on an island in Lake Superior in 1847. The book was written by Louise Erdrich, herself a member of the Turtle Band of Ojibwa (former name: Anishinabe). The Birchbark House takes place during the same time frame as Little House on the Prairie, and the two books share certain similarities. However, The Birchbark House illustrates that time frame from the perspective of the Native Americans, who fear being pushed ever Westward by white people. It includes many Ojibwa words and customs, and Ms. Erdrich does a wonderful job of conveying the sense of harmony that the Ojibwa share with their surroundings.

This is the story of an extraordinary little girl. Alexandra Scott was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a form of cancer, when she was one year old. When she was four, she decided to build a lemonade stand and donate the proceeds to the hospital where she was treated. News of Alex and her goals spread, so that others decided to help her raise money. Now there is a foundation (Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation) dedicated to continuing her work.

What a wonderful book. I read the reviews here before purchasing and my only reservation was with the "sarcastic" humor in the book. Actually, it is the humor that makes this book work. It was the bait that got my son hooked on the book.
3-0 out of 5 stars I Wanted To Like This More, But....
This book was difficult to use with elementary age children, especially those who are K-4th grade. Some of the sarchastic humor and tongue-in-cheek humor was very tough for younger children and/or kids with lower intellectual functioning. When I tried to use this several times with kids; the concepts did not engage them and seemed to go above their heads. I would also like this book more if it was sectioned off in short activities and lessons.

Editorial Review

If you read this very popular book just before bed, and the light is still on in the hallway, you can make the rainbow scales glitter on the page, and realize why the Rainbow Fish was so proud of his beautiful decoration. Sometimes, though, being too proud of outside beauty can blind a fish, or a child (or even, heaven forbid, a parent) to the beauty people hold inside. That's the lesson of this simple tale, imported from Switzerland. It's a useful one for future sneaker and designer clothing shoppers, for rainbow fish--and for quieter, plainer minnows, too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST books!!
My son (22 months) LOVES this book.I read this book at least once a week.Great for teaching sharing!
5-0 out of 5 stars An Adorable Book With An Outstanding Message!
This is an adorable book! It is fun and easy to read and it has a great message. This book teaches children to share their gifts and talents with others, and that material possessions are not everything in life. This book taught me that in general, people put too much emphasis on material possessions, when we really should be focusing most of our energy on relationships and more important issues that really matter in the world. This book teaches the importance of friendship and overall happiness in life. If children can understand these concepts it will only help them in life. This book shows a fish who starts out being selfish and is very unhappy because he does not have any friends. Eventually, after discussing his lonliness with someone wiser, he shares his rainbow scales with the other fish, who, in return, invite him to join their circle of friends. This simple plot line is easy for children to understand, yet so very important in life. The layout is also simple; there is one paragraph on every other page and it is written with simple language and simple dialogue. Even though this book typically attracts young readers, the message is universal and appropriate for all ages. This is a fantastic book! I highly recommend it to readers of all ages!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Colors Of Us
A great book describing differences in skin color in a positive and easy to understand way for a small child. My 3 1/2 year old loves this book and I've ordered 10 more to give as gifts. If only many of us adults had grown up thinking of people as "all the shades of us" (cinnamon, peach, french toast, cocoa, chocolate brown) instead of the labels of black, white, asian, etc.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rather one-sided
This books paints a rather one-sided picture of racial diversity and children may be misled to believe that racial differences are just a matter of skin colour.
5-0 out of 5 stars Creative book about each person's uniqueness
Karen Katz has succeeded in presenting a colorful and creative book that describes the many beautiful shades of skin tone in our society. She teaches her daughter, Lena, that there are many shades of brown. They walk through their neighborhood, using color tones and food items to make tasteful distinctions. After Lena mixes her paint colors to match the subtle hues and paint each person, she exclaims, "Look Mom, the colors of us!" This has been a wonderful book for my 2 year old son to explore the differences in races as we await the adoption of our baby from China. He has memorized the skin color descriptions and has noticed people in our community/church whose skin matches them. This incredible book has become one of our favorites. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very hesitant to buy but a wonderful book!
I was VERY hesitant to buy this book because I honestly didn't expect it to be that good.I looked in it (on the bargain rack at a local bookstore) and saw the beautiful illustrations and decided to try it out.I was very surprised when my 4 year old understood the story.I thought it was well written and conveyed its message without being boring or "preachy" (like other books with a moral). My daughter and I talked about it after and I know she got the point of the story.Bravo Madonna!I am excited to add the others to our collection. They are worth the full price!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really Good Book
This is a great story. You will love the illustrations. Not only is this book entertaining and enlighening for children but adults will love it also. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple Is Best
I enthusiastically applaud Madonna's book, Mr. Peabody's Apples.Having heard the tale before, I was curious as to how she would approach the story line.Madonna told a story and sent a very powerful message to children (and hopefully adults, as well) that the spoken word cannot be taken back.Gossip is harmful. She did not candy coat it nor did she patronize the reader. As for the illustrations, beautiful! All in all a book that should grace the shelf of one's library and be read on a regular basis for a good dose of common sense. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captures being a mama.......
This is such a sweet book. The words are lovely and succicently sum up what being a mommy is all about.Plus, the illustrations are soft and gentle and support the text beautifully.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Expression of the Loving Relationship Between Parent & Child
I received this book as a gift and fell in love with it on the first read. At the time, my son was about 18 months old and this book provides a simple, yet poignant perspective of the daily interaction between parent and child. The book offers poetic symbolism to which parents everywhere can relate. "I am your way home you are my new path. I am your dry towel, you are my wet bath. I am your favorite book, you are my new lines. I am your night light you are my star shine." Not only do I love the book, but my son frequently requests it at bed time (and has even learned to say "I luv you"). It seems that he is just as touched by the story's soft images and lovely expression of our relationship as I am. You won't be dissappointed by the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweetest book for new parents

5-0 out of 5 stars cookies are important
This is the kind of book that children of all ages should read, or have someone read to them.I love the way the book compares everyday words with cookies! The golden retriever on the front of the book is adorable, too. It's a very educational, creative and memorable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Way to Learn is While Enjoying a Cookie
I bought this book for my husband who is known for baking the best tasting cookies in the small town where we live. The book is a delight to read and a great way to teach kids lessons such as sharing, patience, respect, trustworthiness, cooperation, compassion, etc. The illustrations are warm additions and you can almost smell the cookies.
5-0 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful book
This is such a wonderful book.I was attracted to Jane Dyer's lovely illustrations and fell in love with the story.By using chocolate chip cookies, Rosenthal explains such things as envy, greed, cooperation, kindness, etc in a manner that helps children understand and gives adults a reason to smile.Today is my daughter's 6th birthday.Rather than take in treats that would be forgotten quickly, she gave her kindergarten teacher and class a copy of this book as a present. The teacher (and class) loved it.This book would be a wonderful present for a young child (say kindergarten to first grade) and a welcome addition to any libary.I cannot recommend it enough. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Silly and Most Importantly, Engaging for Young Readers!
I think every young child whose ever accidentally released a balloon into the wild blue yonder has wondered what happens to them...and this book gives kids some whimsical ideas about the secret life of balloons that should ease their minds about what happens...I suppose this is a better way for kids to think about it than just popping somewhere up there and plummeting to the ground. The words are written in silly rhymes and the illustrations are lush and whimsical...just plain silly and loads of fun for young readers.Younger kids (2-4) will like having the opportunity to explore each page and older kids (5-8) will enjoy reading all the additional text loaded onto each page (balloons writing post cards, signs for various things, ect...) that should help keep their interest when the simple rhyme is, well, too simple for them to enjoy. Each page feels rather like an explosion of art and whimsy...it is that chaotic splendor that kids can't help but love!!Where to Balloons Go? doesn't provide any scientific explanation...but it's not meant to, it's just plain fun!! Kids and adults alike will have fun reading this and diving right into the incredible illustrations...if you've got a kid 4-8, this is a must read!!

5-0 out of 5 stars artistic, creative, clever, addictive!!
my daughter absolutely loves this book. the age range says 4 and up but my daughter is two and loves it and is addicted to it. she wants me to read it to her before her nap and bedtime. i would say not to leave it down where a child under 4 could rip the pages. this books verbage and artwork is so clever. my daughter and i both get a kick out of it. there are reusable stickers included in the back of the book and you can use them on the pretty inside covers in the front or back (slick surface- either cloud or space background). she always sees them when we are done reading and can't wait until she can one day play with them. she loves stickers but tends to rip them and ruin them at this age- so i'm waiting to let her play with these! i would recommend this book to anyone, and i know i will buying this as gifts!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a child that has lost someone.
I don't know if this was the original message intended, but I've found this book to be a great tool for helping kids cope with loss. Whether it be a grandparent or a pet, this can open the lines of communication with a young child and help explain things that sometimes adults have difficulty putting into words. I'm a hospice nurse, and know that this book has been reccommended for children in our field for years - and it's darned cute to boot! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Molly Lou Melon may be tiny, clumsy, buck-toothed, and with a voice"like a bullfrog being squeezed by a boa constrictor," but she doesn't mind. Hergrandmother has utmost confidence in her, and tells her at every turn to believein herself. "Sing out clear and strong and the world will cry tears of joy,"Grandma says. But Molly Lou's self-assurance is put to the test when she movesto a new town, away from her friends and beloved grandmother. During her firstweek of school, Ronald Durkin taunts Molly Lou Melon in the dull-witted butsharp-edged manner of career bullies, calling her "shrimpo" and "bucky-toothedbeaver." Our heroine barely flinches as she systematically sets out to proveherself, and Ronald Durkin ends up feeling pretty foolish.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WELL DONE QUIRKY LITTLE BOOK - I LIKED IT
I like this one.It is just enough over the edge, illustration wise, to make it quite interesting.More importantly than my likeing it, is that all the kids seem to love this one.For some reason it appeals to them. The story is certainly good and teaches a wonderful lesson on a subject that bothers most kids, self-image.The author has hit this subject head on and has done a very good job of it in quite understandable style.I like the art work in this one, and feels it makes the point of the story stick.Recommend this one highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon
Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon was written by, Patty Lovell and illustrated by, David Catrow.Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon is a fiction book. The main characters are Molly Lou Melon, Grandma, and Ronald Durkin.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Illustrations are beautiful art!!
I have to say I favor a book for its illustrations over its story, as long as the story is still good!I was so impressed with David Catrow's gorgeous illustrations that I searched through all of the books he illustrated intent on buying more."King Bidgood..." is an example of my taste if that helps.
