This is a wonderful young adult novel by Ms. Martin.Belle Teal is a thought-provoking and beautifully told story of one child's experience with desegregation.Belle is a strong female character who gracefully stands up for herself and her beliefs; a terrific role model for girls (and boys) learning to navigate a larger world in which people don't always agree. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A load of crock.
This book takes heartfelt letters written by girls trusting their most private experiences to a complete stranger (the author) -- and dissects them like a dead frog, telling the girls what they did "wrong" and how they "should" be acting, feeling, behaving if they want to a get a good grade, because this book GRADES every girl in their "First Person" segments.

Editorial Review

Richard Carlson has written numerous books encouraging folks not to"sweat the small stuff", and his title for teens is as warm, wise, and witty ashis previous works. His tone is one of an older family friend who manages toadvise while still maintaining the minimum level of coolness that teens requirefrom those who intend to guide them into adulthood. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars better than i thought
When my grandma first gave me this book, I thought it was gonna be another useless book saying "just be yourself" and all that [...]. But this book actually has substance and I was surprised that I actually got something out of it. Recommended to any teen on the "emotional roller coaster" who needs some guidance in their life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I always read books I get for my daughter first to confirm that I got her something right/good for her. This one is no doubt a winner. The titles of each chapter were catching enough to make you curious as to what you were about to read and then the story you read were a great explanation to the sometimes funny and odd titles. The story in each chapter was absolutely great. They were short enough to keep any kids attention, make a good lesson and walk away feeling good that you learned something new and were inspired. The really great thing is, my 13 year old who usually complains about sitting still and reading because she'd rather be actively playing sports, isn't complaining a bit about winding down and reading this book. She loves that most chapters are only 2-3 pages each, but even better, she is mimicking what they are teaching and I'm loving it, too, as a mom. This is a great read, a great inspiration and a lot of the stories are what these kids can relate to.I plan to buy it as a gift to others, but I'm not sure if I should get it for the parents or the kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read!
This book definently helped me to chill out with certain struggles and people in my life. This book is a wonderful read for teenagers, because it suggests, not tells, how teenagers take things, and how they should act in certain situations. I would definently recommend this book to any teenager, or parents of their teenagers, who are struggling to find themselves, and also who are struggling in dealing with life. ... Read more

Let me start by saying that I get goose bumps at the end of this book EVERY time I read it to my daughter, who is now 4.The illustrations and the rhymes are so wonderful. This was the first of the Bear books that I had read, and I ran right out to get the others, which are all equally fantastic. You won't be disappointed with this one.I am anxiously awaiting the release of Karma's next Bear book...

I don't know if I love the prose by Wilson or the incredible illustrations by Chapman more! The combination of the 2 has made another Bear book much requested in my home.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique Format Elevates this Book to a New Level
Julia and Patrick are best friends in this book set in Plainfield, IL.The two are working together on a silkworm project that they hope will be displayed at the state fair.Unfortunately, Julia, whose parents came to the United States from South Korea, is less then enthusiastic about the project because she feels that silkworms are too "Korean" and so she attempts to sabotage their project. What makes this book unique is not only Julia's voice, but also the discussions between Julia and the author in between chapters.Any aspiring writer would do well to read this book as Park offers excellent insight into the writing process, while those who just enjoy a good story will also be satisfied.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for readers and writers!
I purchased this book due to the fact that I would be attending a conference at which Ms. Park is speaking (I like to get an idea of the presentors background).I knew that Ms. Park is talented, but never did I expect to enjoy it so very very much.As an author I found the entries between the chapters to be facinating. What a great idea. And the story itself was amazing as well.I can not say enough about the whole package other than READ IT!Can't wait to meet you Ms. Park!Julia (not Julia Song, but still Julia)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Julia and Patrick have to do a project for the Wiggle club.Wiggle is the pet name for the WGGL (work grow give live) club, an extra curricular organization similar to 4H. The two kids partner up to do a project that can go to the state fair as both an animal husbandry and domesticarts entry. When Julia's mother suggests raising silkworms, Patrick is excited because such a project was unheard of. Julia is anxious because it is too Korean. Linda Sue Park meets all expectations as an author and writes a wonderfully entertaining story. Park does a great job in staying focusedon the life of one girl, yet touching on tangents of other issues. Julia Song is a well-developed character that grows beyond her personal limitations to understand herself, hermother, little brother, and friend. In the character of Julie, readers experience the life of a young girl who learns to reconcile being Korean and American. It is refreshing to read about an experience with a world that in many ways is not Black and White. In less drastic, yet by no means less dramatic ways, one is confronted with the issue of animal husbandry and cruelty. Julie learns that to get the silk, she must kill the pupae, which she has grown to love. Unlike other popular examples of Asian American literature, Project Mulberry is not riddled with flashbacks; it stays in one single narrative that is direct and still charming. Project Mulberry is a good read for third to fifth grade students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Educational for Children
A change of seasons is in the air. Fletcher the fox doesn't understand and now he's worried.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful language and art--highly, highly recommended
It's rare that a children's book comes along where both the artwork and the language reach the heights offered up by Fletcher and the Falling Leaves. The story's premise--a young fox attempts to protect his favorite tree from the encroachment of autumn, trying in vain to keep it leaved, literally to the last leaf--could have easily become overly sentimental and cloying.Instead, there is a true sense of sadness and empathy leavened by some wonderfully quirky moments all of which lead to a close that is as satisfying as it is moving. As it is, the story could certainly have stood on its own for plot alone, regardless of language or art.But the artwork is simply sensational, the impressionistic watercolors perfectly matching each page's tone and sentiment, matching the movement of time through day and night, from fall to winter, culminating in perfect pace with the plot in a final illustration of the tree that is simply beautiful. It's a good book for the story, an excellent book for the story plus the art. What makes it a great book, truly a beautiful book, is the language, which never fails to please, to startle, to jostle. The words are sharp and vivid, the rhythm carries you along, and the rhymes and slant rhymes sneak up on you in singular moments of sheer joy in language. The book is a pure clinic in children's picture books as all three elements--plot, art, and language--each alone a superior example, come together to create a whole even greater than its impressive parts.A great book, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, beautiful illustrations
This is a beautiful book.Fletcher is a young fox that has noticed the forest is changing as the summer comes to an end.He has a favorite tree. When he sees the way the leaves are changing he thinks that the tree is sick.He does everything he can think of to help the tree keep it's leaves.Of course in the end he can't save the leaves and he goes home very sad with the last leave that was on the tree. The next day he wakes up and goes to his tree and is mesmarized by the sight of the tree. It's beautiful it's covered in icicles and shining in the morning sunlight. He asks the tree if it is okay and the tree in a sense answers him. The wind blows and the tree shakes and the icicles tingle. To Fletcher it sounds like the tree is laughing and he takes this to mean that the tree is alright. The illustrations are wonderful and the last one of the tree with the icicles is fabulous it is done with a type of glitter.Very pretty effect.I very much recommend this book ... Read more

Editorial Review

"Going all the way" is still a taboo subject in young adult literature. Judy Blume was the first author to write candidly about a sexually active teen, and she's been defending teenagers' rights to read about such subjects ever since. Here, Blume tells a convincing tale of first love--a love that seems strong and true enough to last forever. Katherine loves Michael so much, in fact, that she's willing to lose her virginity to him, and, as the months go by, it gets harder and harder for her to imagine living without him. However, something happens when they are separated for the summer: Katherine begins to have feelings for another guy. What does this mean about her love for Michael? What does this mean about love in general? What does "forever" mean, anyway? As always, Blume writes as if she's never forgotten a moment of what it's like to be a teenager. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still a Great Read!
I managed to miss this one when I was reading Blume as a pre-teen...and since it's around that time of the year (banned book week), I decided to find out why it is that this book gets challenged so often...and yep, I can see why! It's a realistic look at young love, about how teens feel about love and sex and how emotionally crippling a romance can feel at that age...it doesn't pull any punches and presents a realistic and compelling story of young love that could have happened to any of us.I do see why some parents might not want this in libraries...but I personally would LOVE to see teens reading this...it presents an honest, open, and responsible look at teenage love and sex.I love that this goes one step further than that "forever" feeling and examines what happens when those same teenagers who pin their whole emotional future on one other person go away to college or for summer jobs (or both)...what happens when they are exposed to new people and experiences and how that changes what they thought would be forever!
5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
I just read it for the fifth or sixth time. Not sure what else to say that hasn't already been said.Basically it was entertaining, honest, enlightening, touching, and the break-up scene made me cry.Who hasn't gone through that?It reads so realistically, and quickly!I was so disappointed it was so short, I really wanted to see what happened after.Maybe Blume will write a sequel about Katherine in college called "Theo called."

1-0 out of 5 stars Love Story? No. Moral book? Not even.
I have heard people say that Blume was an amazing author. I read this book and was thouroughly let down. I thought it was going to be a love story but I was wrong. It is a sex book and is completely pointless. If Blume was trying to write a moral book then she was way off target.

Editorial Review

"Here is the book that Romeo would have given Juliet; Charlie Brown would have given Snoopy; and you can give to some very special friend" proclaims the back cover of this small, whimsical book. Written in 1965 by Sandol Stoddard Warburg, it still makes the perfect present for your best friend. Not just any run-of-the-mill best friend, though. This book is for the kind of friend who yells for you when you get lost in Grand Central Station or pretends to save you when you pretend to be drowning. Or, as Warburg puts it, "You know how to be silly / That's why I like you / Boy are you ever silly / I never met anybody sillier than me / till I met you." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I happened upon this little red book while searching for a birthday present for my little cousin.I read it through, and teared up because it so aptly describe how I feel about my husband.I bought it and gave it to him...I think this is book is wonderful for expressing how you feel about someone you really really love/like.

2-0 out of 5 stars Strange Little Book
This book definitely gives some unique and nice reasons for liking someone. I liked most of them. However, for some of them the author is so "real" about why people like other people that he lists not necessarily healthy reasons. For example, one page says that they like the other person because if they get mad at them, they also get mad back...when someone is nice to you when you're mad at them it makes you want to punch them in the nose. True? Sometimes. But not how I want to teach my child to be. Another example is they like the other person because when they say something funny the other person laughs. Does that mean when someone doesn't laugh you shouldn't like them?
5-0 out of 5 stars A great, funny look at friendship for mature kids and childish adults
I'm sure this is supposed to be a children's book, and kids will definitely enjoy it.But the fact of the matter is that "I Like You" is the warmest love note you could possibly give your spouse or best friend. It contains the reasons we like our friends -- the games we play, the fun we share, etc. -- and also the things that are so true about friendships that are often overlooked, like paying attention when the other person is throwing up ("you don't just pretend to be looking at the birdies") and engaging in a decent fight when the other person's mad ("it's awful when the other person isn't.They're just so nice and oo-hoo you could just about punch them in the nose.")Give this book to someone you love from age 4 to 144! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Influence in my life
The story of this book to me is being black. Most black people are darker then other and some are lighter then others. The characters in this book are;Maleeka,Char,Raise,Rain,Jo-Jo,Caleb.Basically this books is about a young black that lives in the ghetto who was always getting called names or had a bad song made up about her skin color because it was too dark and everyone just seemed light aourned her because her skin color was too dark. This book wasn't racist or anything like that but it shoes you just how someone your color or not can really hurt you and can make you have a very low self-esteem like maleeka had.She wasn't poor but her mother didn't have enough money to buy her clothes. So she wore what her mother made for her to school then when she got to school her friend (or who she thought was her friend)gave her better and up to date clothes to wore. This girl was Charlese, Charlese and Maleeka had there problems but Charlese's deal with Maleeka was for her to do her homework so that she can wear her clothes. Then there's Jo-Jo, and Maleeka's problemm with him was that he was the one to always make fun of her and made her feel that evryone noticed her dark skin color and made her self-esteem low.Next there was the twins Raise and Rain they also had Maleeka do there homework too to keep Maleeka's secrect on the down low. Then after all that trouble with all four of those people here came a boy named Caleb, who made Maleeka feel SO better about her skin color and that no one should ever make her feel so bad about her skin color and the peoms her late father helped her to realize that she is beatiful.Maleeka never thought a boy would like her as much as Caleb did.Caleb made Maleeka focus on one thing that changed Maleeka's thoughts about her skin color and that was;BALCK IS BEAUTIFUL.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Skin I'm In
The book The Skin I'm In by Sharon G. Flake is a wonderful book with a realistic plot. The main character Maleeka Madison has to make some important decisions that could affect the rest of her life.

"The Skin I'm In" is a wonderful book. It is about a thirteen year old girl named Maleeka Madison. This book is a great book for teens and for the adults who are more hip than the common mom. It says so much about the world of today. The novel shows not only how we are racist by discriminating against those different from us, but also that people discriminate against us. The book tells the story of Maleeka and her discovering that there is always someone else out there who is worse off then she is. She also learns how to be strong and stick up for what is right.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great new addition to our book shelf!
As a mom of a pink princess obsessed 4yr. old, this book is right up her alley! The story is fun and well written. I love this Sassie character! The illustrations are bright and eye catching, such a fun and whimsical book that my daughter hasn't let out of her sight! (let alone, let her younger sister even touch!) We've even decided we're going to buy another copy to donate to her preschool so they can fall in love with it as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best children's book illustrations I have ever seen... BRAVO!!
I have been a fan of Dena's work for years. Sassafras's illustrations manage to capture the emotions of the spoiled pink poodle perfectly. The illustrations are colorful, whimsical, and utterly delightful. Some of the best children's book illustrations I have ever seen, and it is now my two children's absolutely favorite book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sassie is fabulous
I absolutely LOVED Sassafrass. It perfectly captures in a comedic way how success can change and warp a personality, and how when a person (or a dog) starts to believe her own publicity, she can lose track of who she really is.Staying true to yourself and keeping your head on straight in good times and in bad is a great message for children and adults. And this tale is told with such a light touch--that it's like eating a chocolate souffle!Brava Sassie! You are adorable! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Walter the Farting Dog
Walter the Farting Dog is a great fiction book. Its authors are William Katzwinkle and Glen Muarry. Its main characters are the man at the yard sale, Walter, Betty, Billy, and the dad.
4-0 out of 5 stars My son loved it
My son loves Walter. He is a typical boy and body noises and it just makes him laugh. He isn't a kid that likes to read, but with the Walter books he is willing sit down and read to me and actually enjoys it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't hold my interest like the first one did.
Walter is back but not with the same enthusiasm as the first book. I barely laughed at this book and was disappointed because I absolutely fell in love with William Kotzwinkle's original Farting Dog book. Same strange, yet intriguing illustrations but the story didn't hold my interest. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Crispin: The Cross of Lead
I read this book first in sixth grade, and now I read it again and I loved it more now than I did then. Crispin goes from being a thirteen year old boy growing up in historical England with no name, to being Crispin who can play the recorder, knows who he is, and has made a friend. This was great, and I got many good quotes from it. It has a lesson to be learned, and it is exciting and smart. Love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars I can see why this book won the Newbery
Crispin: The Cross of Lead is a historical novel set in 1377, during a time of great crisis in England. At the start of the story, the hero doesn't even know his own name. He's been raised in isolation in a small village, and has only ever heard himself referred to as "Asta's son". Even among the villagers, Asta's son has been isolated, never treated like one who belonged there. His own mother often seems to resent him. He thinks of himself as being "nothing".

I have a 3 year old daughter that LOVES this series. The art is very "old" -but in a good way.She likes the story "The Shivers" most of all.You can't beat this series for the price, or the lessons learned.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review by Alaisiah P.S. 39 and Michael P.S. 39
You should read Frog and Toad because they can teach kids a lot of lessons. For example, if you are a kid and you want to learn to be nice to a friend then Days with Frog and Toad is a really good book for you. You'll also learn that sometimes friends aren't nice to each other. So, if you're the kind of reader who wants to learn about relationships then this is a book for you to read.

I read about this book in EW and immediately went online to buy it.The topic sounded so refreshing.I tore through this book in about half the time it takes me to read a book of this length.I know this sounds cliche, but this was truely laugh out loud funny.I woke up my wife on numerous occasions laughing as I read long after she has fallen asleep in bed.
