5-0 out of 5 stars short stories about tough issuses
This book is a great book about teens dealing with tough issues. It touches on many issuse that teens deal with every day, such as teen pregnancy, drug use and abuse, not knowing how to handle. The fact that it is written as a group of short stories makes it that much more appealing to a younger audience.5-0 out of 5 stars Great stories...there's at least one for everyone
I read this book in less than a day.The stories were really realistic, and they're things that real teenagers face in everyday life. All the stories are by different authors, and I liked how they put a mini-bio after each of the stories to tell about that author's most famous books that had won the most prizes, etc.It helped, because if there was a story I really liked, then I could get the book with the longer version (most of the stories came from a book the author had written). It was an awesome book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent discussion tool for character education . . .
Given the recent trend toward violence with teenagers, this book provides a powerful discussion piece in the middle school classroom. The stories in this collection all have characters who face difficult moral delimmas. This can spark many classroom activities where students determine the bestcourse of action. This gets young adults talking about character, takingresponsiblity, and choosing the right path. Furthermore, the high interestlevel of the stories hook even the most reluctant of readers! It was hardfor anyone in the room to put down. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book forthe spiritually-minded teen
I actually bought this book because I have been considering offering a yoga class for teens. Although this is not a yoga book, per se, it does cover yoga practices like meditation, mindfulness and compassion. The language and tone of the book is quite appropriate for kids 13-18.The goal of this work, I think, is to get teens to think of their lives as a whole; to begin to think outside the pressures of being adolescent and see their lives as a journey to which they have a great amount of control. This book encourages pro-activity, active listening, honesty and finding balance in their lives.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Say OM is perfect for teens!
I use this book to teach yoga to teenagers. I love it, the meditations are accessible, the writing is really teen friendly and it just hits the spot! I highly recommend this book for any teen interested in yoga, it's very clear and easy to understand, a must for anyone beginning their yogic path!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Teens
This is a pithy readable usable book for dabblers and practitioners of Buddhism.I've used some chapters of this book to teach in a class of college freshman. The intimate fresh style and deeply felt honesty makes the book accessible to the students (and the teacher). A fine gift. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Proud grandfather of budding author
I bought this book for my 10-year old granddaughter who, after a year, was still on page two of a story she was writing.A month after receiving this book, she completed a 20-page story about going to school with an alien friend on an alien planet. She said the book helped her with storyline, plot and other "stuff".The book made writing fun and showed her where to go next. She intends to use the book to help her write stories for pre-teen girls magazines.Good investment on my part.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great idea!

4-0 out of 5 stars For families seeking wholesome ways to celebrate seasons
Waldorf schooling is the fastest growing non-sectarian school movement in the United States. Based on the philosophy of Rudolph Steiner, Waldorf education seeks to engage the mind, body and heart of its' students. AChild's Seasonal Treasury is beautifully bound, with practical suggestions, recipes and ideas for helping children escape the commercialism of many ofholidays today, and return to simpler (yet no less FUN) times. As my ownchildren grow, we can always find something new here to enjoy, and toreflect on. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful - My 4 year old loves it!
I saw this book and didn't think anything of it, then I checked it out at the library and discovered that my daughter loved it (4 years old) and it brought up many discussions about herself and others. We love reading ittogether!I had to buy it because she kept wanting to check it out again, and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, kids and parents will like it!
This is an excellent book, it's not hokey and fake like many "self-esteem" books. The content is right on target, speaking exactly to kids' interests and parents' concerns. My first grader took itto school to read, the teacher loved it--wanted to know where I got it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly remarkable in affirmingchildren's self worth
When I inherited my now nine year old daughter after her mother died, this is a book I wish we had found right away. Before we finished the first page, Kim started saying things like, "This is excellent," and "This is my favorite book ever."All of the concerns of this young lady were addressed and affirmed: appearance, feelings, privacy, changes and more. Just Because I Am truly helped her understand that even with herexperiences, she really is a worthwhile person. Hearing it from the perspective of a stranger(the author)and accompanied by the brightlycolored illustrations of just the right complexity gave this much more weight than all the times I have expressed similar concepts in less lovely prose. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars We love this book!!
What a fun and wonderful book this is. My 3 1/2 year old son loves it and even reads aloud with me his favorite parts (THE COOKIE! THE COOKIE!). We really relate to how Sophie feels when she gets really angry and what it feels (and looks)like to have a tantrum. There are no judgements in this book, only real feelings and patience and understanding from a mom. And it has a peaceful loving ending too. Bravo! to Harvey Stevenson and Deborah Blumenthal.... encore! encore!

5-0 out of 5 stars At last, a parent allows their child to have feelings!
Sophie sees another child with a cookie, (and she's cranky and hungry and it's naptime) and she REALLY wants a cookie, but her mom says "no", they don't have one today, and Sophie has a tantrum, while her mom stands and listens and watches- she's there for her daughter without interfering, and when Sophie is done with her feelings, they go home, there is no judgement or shaming directed at Sophie for her "freak out", just matter-of-fact kindness. It's SO refreshing!I particularly like the message of the book which is that adults don't have to give children whatever they want or try to reason with them, distract them, etc.. They simply need to let children have their feelings about not getting what they want.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book for toddlers and their parents!
Deborah Blumenthal puts her finger on the frustrations experienced by two-year-olds who don't know how to stop their tantrums once they start. The colorful and charming illustrations keep kids' attention, and the textis simple enough for your toddler to follow and memorize. It's a"universal," captivating book that really struck a chord with myown young son.Anyone dealing with the so-called "terrible twos"should like this book! ... I have all the books from the Learning to Get Along series. They are wonderfully illustrated and written. These are great social story books to help kids. I use them for my son and for the kids I work with at school. My son (5) will just sit and read this books on his own. I absolutely recommend Cheri J Meiners books. 5-0 out of 5 stars A nice adaptation with gorgeous art work!
This is a children's rendition of the later portion of the Ramayana, pertaining specifically to Hanuman's role in freeing Sita from Ravana, her abductor. It has great moral lessons while still being an adventure. There is some violence that a very small child might find scary (we see soneone with a spear through him) and it's definitely a military motif, but given that Rama's identity is as a warrior that is appropriate. A great adventure with attractive illustrations!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This book has an amazing story and amazing pictures. It's great~

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, exciting artwork and a bold tale
This telling of the Hanuman myth is fascinating for kids and adults alike. The tale of a monkey who battles the ultimate evil is vividly illustrated, and unlike many children's versions of myths, doesn't pull any punches. My 4-year-old son absolutely loves it, and I enjoy reading it to him. The pictures are dramatic and colorful, in kind of a Frank Frazzeta kinda way, and they fit the story perfectly. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GreatBook
This book is a favorite in my classroom. The children enjoy the content as well as the illustrations. Last year I tied this book into the theme of my classroom, which was: "Philosophy - Love of Wisdom."

5-0 out of 5 stars a remarkable book
This book is for anyone who likes to ask questions, questions, questions and more questions. It taps into the childlike love of questioning that we are all born with but that so many of us lose (or lose touch with) as we get older and have answers crammed down us.[Some adults have] lost the ability to understand what it's like to cultivate your sense of wonder. But children (and all those adults who still love to question and explore) will take to this book quickly and cherish it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Profound thoughts for young minds
I am eager to try this book with some of my classes, but I haven't used it yet.I like the format - first he takes you through a discussion of a particular question and then he asks a lot of related questions.I have been looking for a book that would help children explore significant questions about their world. This may help. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent gift for a Jewish baby
We received this book as a gift after our daughter was born. At first, only we understood the cute rhymes. Now our daughter is old enough to recognize many of the foods and understand the book. It's so nice to see our family's traditional foods reflected in a children's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another good one!
My kids have all of Amy Wilson Sanger's books. This one is probably their least favorite, though it's still good. Part of it may be my fault - I am not at all familiar with this food and so hesitate a little more over the words and don't get a good rhythm going. If you know your Jewish food, you probably would enjoy this just as much as the others. The pictures are still wonderful!Read more

Editorial Review

Sure, a swell girl can bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan, but that's just the beginning. She can also turn a last-minute dinner party into a cabaret, create a push-up bra out of electrical tape, and fix a flat in pumps and a pencil skirt. Move over, Miss Manners, this is advice for the girl on the go.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Swell? Definitely!
I own this book and it is true that some of these tips of advice are for glamourous "Manhattanians" but it is still all fun in the same.To be truthful I carried out a lot of these things and I have children and live a somewhat surburban life. However, myself and the women around me are not cookie cutter versions of desperate housewives so to say.We all soaked it up and became more fabulous than we were before. So all you non-boring people that want to laugh and willing to take a few risks even in your small town this one is for you. It's fun and it will make you feel fabulous!

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy Life But Give It Some Excitement With Zaniness!
A swell isn't perfect; the main thing is not to be bored.Put a little action in your life.SWELL is a guide to 'navigating the world with a little swagger and a lot of grace.'It doesn't hurt to use a little flash, too, in your own little world.I have a web site, "Welcome to My World."It is for all races, and the pictures are all of young women, so keep your cool and you will learn how to 'be cool.'
2-0 out of 5 stars Eh.Cute -- amusing even but a little light on useful info.
The book's authors keep their sassy _sex_in_the_city_ tone throughout, but unless you're a denizon on manhatten, I'm not sure how useful this book can actually be.Maybe I'm not glamourous enough for this book.I suppose it did make me strive for more glamour in my life, but when I set the book down and realized my fully suburban existence, the book came up short with truly translatable wisdom. A cute gift for a gal just leaving college. At 28, I was far too aged for this one. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Rosemary Wells' tales of animals with very human problems make her a favorite from the board-book years on. Now one old Wells friend, Nora, that noisy mouse, returns with all her middle-child problems still on display. What's a mouse to do when little brother and big sister take up all mom and dad's time? Yup. Plenty of noise. Look at these new pictures and you can almost hear the racket. With all that clatter, it might be better to read this one before dinner, not before bed! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Classic
"Noisy Nora" is the story of a young mouse girl, a middle child who just can't seem to get any attention. Ignored because her younger brother needs constant care and her parents play games with her older sister, she resorts to acting out --- making all sorts of noise. The rhymes are simple but catchy.
5-0 out of 5 stars favorite children's book
I loved this book as a child, and had it memorized before I could read.Fifteen years later I found myself searching for a copy of it to give to my younger half sister so that she could also enjoy it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fondly remembered from childhood
I borrowed this book from the library so often as a child, that I knew exactly where to find it on the shelf well before I was able to read the cover. Now that I have a daughter of my own, this was one of the first books we added to our collection of children's stories. Not only are the prose and illustrations totally charming, but the book offers several "teachable moments" (including opportunities to talk about name-calling, which earned the book a dressing-down by another reviewer). This is a two-generation favorite! ... Read more
