5-0 out of 5 stars Well done manners book
When I opened Marc Brown's D.W.'s Guide to Perfect Manners, 2006, I was expecting the same "say please and thank you" drill. The book does cover familiar ground as D.W. strives to be perfect for one day, at home and at school, following a dare from her brother, Arthur.
5-0 out of 5 stars D.W.'s Guide is Spot-On
In "D.W.'s Guide to Perfect Manners" (also known as "D.W.'s Guide to Being Perfect"), D.W.'s brother, Arthur, challenges her to be perfect for just one day. Of course, D.W. already knows how to be perfect --- she just doesn't always act that way.
4-0 out of 5 stars Families will benefit from this book
Marc Brown is the bestselling author and illustrator of the Arthur Adventure book series. His newest series introduces Arthur's little sister D.W. in D.W.'s Guide to Preschool and D.W.'s Guide to Perfect Manners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Next time won't you sing with me
Alphabet books remain the bane of children's librarians worldwide.Tons of these puppies come out every year.Sometimes they appeal to only certain demographics (like the racecar alphabet books, for example).Sometimes they're incredibly hip and modern and hold zippo interest for the children that they are (supposedly) intended for.Sometimes they're deathly dull affairs that offer nothing new or brilliant and sometimes they're so packed with brilliance that it's difficult to remember what the book's initial importance was in the first place.Step back in time then and view the 1960 creation, "Bruno Munari's ABC".Created by an author/illustrator that, "began his career by exhibiting with the second Futurist movement" in Italy (or so his bookflap says), Munari was an excellent graphic designer in his day.And he gave the world this ABC book, one that remains so incredibly popular that it has appeared on the New York Public Library's "100 Pictur Books Everyone Should Know" for 2004.It's a thick sturdy affair, with pages that would take more than the mere strength of toddlers to tear.More importantly, in spite of its very basic design and concept (showing objects that begin with each letter presented) it remains beautiful to look at and interesting to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for all young readers with listening troubles
Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns To Listen by Howard Binkow combines an original and entertaining story with engaging and colorful illustrations from Susan F. Cornelison to provide children 5 through 8 with the tale of Howard Wigglebottom, a young bunny who has poor listening skills. Following Howard through his day at school and the consequences of his continuing failure to listen to his teachers and other authorities, Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns To Listen not only entertains but educates children on what might happen if they decide not to listen, what might happen if they do, and how to best approach good listening. Funny and effective, Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns To Listen is a welcome addition to school and community library picturebook collections, and is especially recommended for all young readers with listening troubles, as well as their parents hoping to find an encouraging and supportive story their children might relate to and learn from.

4-0 out of 5 stars A dated, but instructive book on a difficult subject
This book was written by a group of 14 children, ages 11 to 14 in Cambridge, MA.These children visited funeral homes, interviewed the elderly, and shared their own personal experiences with death and dying. The book speaks frankly about topics ranging from the cost of funerals to assisted suicide and from burial customs to ideas about life after death. The coverage of the book is comprehensive and will likely answer most questions adolescent readers have about death.Since this book is nearly 20 years old, some of the material is outdated. There will be more recent statistics on common causes of death and the percentage of Americans choosing cremation, medical information about diseases and brain death, and data on funeral expenses. In addition, children today will not remember, nor relate to the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lennon.Nevertheless, the tone is straightforward and easy to read and the voices of the child authors ring through. The text is helpfully divided into chapters which might be given to a young person who is confronting a particular situation, such as "When Your Pet Dies," "The Death of Older Relatives and Parents," "The Death of Children," and "Violent Deaths."The text is also readable from beginning to end for those children thinking or worrying about mortality in general.Sensitive subjects such as suicide and euthanasia are handled in a candid, even-handed fashion, though parents with strong religious beliefs may wish to read these sections together with their children.Adult readers will find the book useful in thinking about ways to approach the subject of death with their children and will find especially helpful the children's recommendations for "How Kids Should Be Told" about death. The book begins with an introduction explaining how the children came to write the book and concludes with a brief annotated bibliography of children's fiction and non-fiction addressing the subject of death.Unfortunately, the book does not include an index, which would be helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of straight talk about tough issues.
The Kids' Book about Death and Dying covers a wide range of subtopics including: learning to talk about death, death of a pet, death of children, and "is there life after death?" (This last question is dicussedin an open-minded manner, describing many different beliefs.)Even toughsubjects like euthanasia are defined and discussed, with a look atdiffering opinions on the issue.Due to the conversational style of thebook, filled with words and opinions of other children, kids who read thisbook will feel less alone. ... Inside her shoes." No manners. So off she goes to look for them---with wagon in tow.5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Read to your Class

5-0 out of 5 stars Susan Ashley, Ph.D. Author of The ADD and ADHD Answer Book
As a child psychologist who has been helping children with their social skills for over 20 years now, I use this very book in my social skills group therapy.Parents can read this with their child or give it to their child to read alone.Great for children with AD/HD, ODD and Asperger's....all of whom get teased and rejected by their peers. If your child needs this book he or she would probably benefit from a social skills group too.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST SELF-HELP BOOK FOR KIDS ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Again, please!
A children's book is different than adult books in that a 600 page novel can be read once and the reader can feel that the purchase price was a bargain. But a 32 page picture book must pass this test to be a bargain: a child must want to hear it again...and again. This book passes the test. The drawings delight. They are as playful as a child, as is the text. And the story nicely balances teaching and whimsy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comedic book on the importance of manners
"Excuse Me!" by Lisa Kopelke is a wonderfully creative book when trying to explain the importance of manners to children. This book explores the world of a frog and his friends. Frog is looked down upon for his constant burping, so they send him away. He finds a town full of other frogs that love to burp, but he realizes how discusting it can be. He ventures back home and is accepted because he has realized the importance of saying, "excuse me" after he burps. As a teacher to be, I would appreciate having this book in my classroom. It is good to always be reinforcing manners and appropriate behavior with the students. This book also has some wonderful illustrations that everyone will love. Buy it today!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hilarious Book for Everyone!
As a parent and teacher, I'm always on the lookout for quality children's books.Excuse Me by Lisa Kopelke has creatively textured and detailed illustrations, and the story keeps kids giggling the whole way through. When we finish reading this book, I hear a chorus of young voices say, "More Frog!"A successful lesson in manners and a hilarious read. This picture book a real winner! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Upside Down Kids - Helped Me!
I have three children with dyslexia and finding a book that helps them understand their problem without the scientific jargon is hard. This is an enjoyable read and helped me understand what the kids are going through. It also shows that an understanding teacher with a heart of gold can truly make a difference to their lives.More teachers should be taking the time to read books like these and they should be moreunderstanding of the "New" children entering their classrooms.3-0 out of 5 stars older kids
I purchased this book to help my 7 year old son understand his dyslexia.Although the book was written in a way that children would readily understand the text, I disagree that it is for children between the ages of 4 - 8.I believe children between the ages of 9 - 13 would benefit most from it.Finally, if the child relates to one of the kids described in the book, I believe that it would be frustrating to not find any helpful strategies at the end.Maybe they are in the next book?

An otherwise boisterous group of 12 and 13 year olds sit silently when I read the daily passage from this book to the 7th grade homeroom. Now I don't even have to tell them to listen.I just open the book and startreading, and they quiet each other down.We enjoy the quotes, reflect onthe explanations, and often refer back to a previously read page whensomeone needs encouragement or a fresh perspective. This is the sort ofbook that has the power to instil positive ethics and character in theyoung people of today, while building their self esteem and problem solvingstrategies. It fosters positive communication and acceptance of diversity. It came with the classroom I inherited mid-year, but I'll be buyingseveral copies to give as gifts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Schwartz has done it again!
If I could travel back in time 30 years and have a library of David Schwartz books, I'd be one happy kid! My kids love his work, and so do I!
4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT PEAK AT SCIENCE
An excellent peak at science for both children and adults. Although rather simplistic, it does a good job explaining basic science concepts. I specially liked the parts on T for Think, where the author explains how scientists use the Scientific Method as a tool for testing observations, making inferences and weed out erroneous beliefs; and O for Occam's Razor, again as of useful tool for reasoning. I sure hope there is a sequel. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Not Just A Movie
What a novel idea, that movies are more than just entertainment. The author points out that watching some of the traditional Christmas movies (It's a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol) makes us feel safe and comfortable. They relieve stress and give us a feeling of control.
