4-0 out of 5 stars "Beware of this book!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Breath of Fresh Air
I've never laughed so much reading a book to my kids. The words are witty and the pictures are hilarious. Oh and the kids like it, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your average PiggieWiggies.
Not all adults are vegans, not all of us are patient, not all of us believe in angels. Kids know this. So why not vary their diet of Polar Expresses, Flopsy Bunnies and Flower Fairies with an amusing tale about life's darker facets. If you and your 5 year-old liked Walter the Farting Dog, which tells us that not all cuddly young puppies grow up to be loveable old dogs, you should pick up Meet Wild Boars. This quirkily illustrated book puts paid to any idea that animals in gingham dresses are automatically cute; Doris the Wild Boar and her pals are sly, spiteful, rude, malodorous and bent on destruction. Meg Rosoff has created a quartet of little monsters that kids will love to laugh at . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Illustrations!
I spotted this book on the shelf of a bookstore in Greenwich, England largely due to the illustrations rather than just the content. I bought it for my then two-year-old son while we were living in London.Of course I suspected what others have confirmed in their reviews, namely that it initially taught him about some dirty habits rather than moving him away from them. But that was short-term and with repeated reading he soon learned not to______, or ______, or eat _____ and ______.
1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Taste, and lost my appetite :-(
I too, purchased this book as a bargain and was quickly offended by the illustrations and word usuage. These are the sorts of things I want my children to understand ARE NOT FUNNY! The author makes light of some pretty terrible habits. I'm sure some families may feel it is appropriate, but my purchase was intended as a donation to our elementary school library. NO CAN DO! The theme is important, but I'm really not sure that the message here is a positive one. Unless of course, you consider teaching kids the worst manners a worthwhile lesson. This book should have been advertised with a message suggesting that some may be offended by the rawness of the language and naked illustrations.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea
I purchased this book because it was a bargain book (only $5.99) and I thought it might have a lesson for my daughter about not eating or touching yucky things. For me, I think some of the references (picking "boogers" and "eating boogers") and illustrations (Bertie and the cat "peeing" in the flower bed) are inappropriate. The book basically gives kids new ideas. When I was finished reading the book to my daughter, she proceeded to stick her finger in her nose and say "Look mom!"I would have returned the book but my daughter ripped one of the pages shortly after we read it.I also thought about donating it to the library but would have to do so anonymously because I wouldn't want my name associated with it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy!
I purchased this book for my nephew's first New Year's Day gift last year. The subject matter was perfect. In our family (ex-southerners) we always serve up a BIG, traditional Southern meal on New Year's Day. All of the foods depicted in this book are familiar to us. From okra and hush puppies to cornbread and 'nana pudding. What a great idea for a toddler book, and the paper collage/fiber art is pretty good too. A great way to introduce your little one to Southern cuisine and culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars great addition to the series
After being a little disappointed with Yum Yum Dim Sum, I was so happy to read through A Little Bit of Soul Food.My kids love it too.We just moved to the South from California....the sushi and Mexican food depicted in Sanger's earlier books were familiar to us and we enjoyed reading about our favorite foods. Now we have another book of familiar yummy foods to read about!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars not stereotypic
This book seems to be a wonderful portrayal of a Native American family and community and their culture and history. One point that I appreciate is that the author tried to stay true to the Choctaw cultural activities, arts and lifestyle in the beautiful drawings and text. The author did not meld several different tribal cultures together as a homogenous "Native American culture."The message of the book also helps young readers to respect the sacrifices and values of the tribe, as well as to question the way Euro-Americans treated them in the past.A treasured book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A profound look at history & community
In 1847 an impoverished displaced group of Choctaw Indians collected from their meager resources the sum of $170 to send toward food relief for the Irish Potato Famine. 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a moving and beautiful book with awesome drawings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not only for kids
As a grown-up student of teism I have shared this book with many adults to help them understand the basic steps for preparing powdered green tea (usucha). It describes the first thin tea practice (temae) using a try, and requires very few utentsils. Dr. Sato, the author, has received the highest honors in Japan, and has a very long teaching career in the US. This is evident in the book's beautiful photos and clear instructions. Highly recommended for kids, their parents and grandparents. Enjoy a cup of tea the Japanese style. Elsa Statzner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable (and fun!) Tool for Parents and Educators
When I wrote a book about Berkeley High School (Class Dismissed, October 2000), I was captivated and inspired by Rick Ayers' and Amy Crawford's dedicated, innovative and intelligent teaching methods--that's why they were two of the four teachers profiled in the book. This book is the text version of their dedication, innovation, and intelligence, and no high school teacher--or parent--should be without it. Brilliant and necessary! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent math and budget book for all kids!
Again, Brother and Sister are in a fix and this time, they've got the galloping greedy gimmies. They want everything is sight when they go to the store and throw tantrums whenever mama and papa protest. One thing particularly interesting here is at one point, mama says no and then papa interrupts her and give the cubs what they were whining for.He just taught them to not pay any attention to their mother and that they can have anything they want or do what they please. How many adults can see themselves in that picture? However, mama is patient and tells papa that they are to blame for the cubs' greedy behavior and he finally sees the error of his ways. When grandma and grandpa come over, they offer a plan which is to have the cubs decide what they want before going to the store.I heartily disagree with the other reviewers which indicate that the child will get something each time they go to the store. That's not what they're teaching here in this book at all. What the Berenstain's are saying is to get the kids to think about what they actually need and buy that if they are allowed an item and nothing else. Not only does this get rid of the gimmies, but it also teaches them how to manage their money and not just grab everything they see off the shelf. In our house, we take it a step further and look for the best price on the item and if it is too expensive, we leave that store without the item and go to another one that is close by and purchase the item if we are going there anyway.Great lesson plan in spending here in this book, don't pass it by!
2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing resolution
The underlying message is one parents and kids can relate to: being tempted by all the goodies at the store. However, the way the authors dealt with this issue is disappointing. Their solution is to have the parents buy something for each child at every trip to the grocery store. Bribery, essentially.
3-0 out of 5 stars Just OK
Cute but not as good as other Bearenstain Bear books. It doesn't really teach about controlling the gimmies. Instead of teaching kids that it's simply not acceptable to get a treat every single time they go somewhere, the solution is to let them get just one treat each time. Not very practicle in my opinon. Also, like another reviewer stated, it would have been nice if at the end Brother and Sister bear hadn't been so condesending to another little cub with the gimmies. Still, it's not a completely bad book to add to your little cubs book collection! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not the real book
I am writing this review to urge other fathers to be more careful than I was when ordering this book.I read the description and the glowing reviews and was convinced that this would help me in my relationship with my daughter.Had I paid attention, I would have noticed the small box with other editions listed (I thought it was just if you wanted hardback) or I would have "looked inside" and noticed that the front cover was not the same.If you order this book with the little girl on the cover, you will get 157 pages of quips and quotes that could be interesting had I actually already read the real book. That is why I am only giving this one star.I am sure that Amazon is responsible for this descrepancy and I will merely write this review to alert others rather than go through the hassle of returning a $7 book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for EVERY father of a girl...
I thought this book was great.I can't wait to implement Roberts ideas for raising my girl.I may even start using some of his ideas with my two sons.Easy to read, and enjoyable to read as well.Every father should read this book, whether first child or not, male or female.I promise you will learn something very valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Concepts
As most self-help style books are written with no real end, this one at least gives some very practical advice.I read this one two months ago, immediately started with some of Robert's suggestions, and the immediate change in my 4 year old daughter was amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever
This book is so incredible. I can't believe the one other review of this book is +negative because my daughter is not even two and has memorized every single picture in this book. She started out before she was even a year old recognizing things like a ball and reciting the word with the picture and now she sits down and "reads" the pages and makes a different action or movement to coincide with each picture. For instance, she pretends to eat popcorn off of the popcorn page. I recommend this book to EVERYONE who wants their child to advance with motor skills and cognitive learning. She loves to read books in general and I attribute it to reading this book and similar ones for her in the very beginning. As far as manipulating the pages goes, my daughter has never had a problem doing so and she has had this book since before she was a year old. I can't imagine why it would be difficult.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good for Toddlers...
While I can certainly appreciate the sketches and the broad choice of words the author chose to include in this book, I don't think it is at all appropriate for toddlers who are just learning to speak.First of all, my child has a much easier time manipulating board book pages than he does these thin, glossy ones.Second of all, the renderings take some slight artistic license...making it very difficult for my child to recognize the objects and associate them with things in the "real world."In my opinion, this book is better suited for the higher end of toddlers and preschoolers only...and young toddlers should stick to books that use actual photographs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help
My son really enjoyed this book.It helped him see that he was not alone. It also seems to have helped with the soiling.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Complicated for Young Children
I was VERY disapointed in this book. My 3 year old just started holding her poops in, and this was the only book I could find to try to help her. It covers things like trauma to the child, as where I just need to get the basics across to her. This is more for a 2nd grader, not a little one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tender and uplifting, but aimed at much younger children
This little book is short and simple. The main problem is that it is clearly aimed at children who may not even be old enough to read it for themselves. Not that there's anything wrong with a grown-up reading to them, but encopresis affects many children that are over the first-grade reading level.(The little boy in the book appears to be approximately first or second grade.)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Seeing a play therapist the first time
This book helps you understand simple facts about play therapy, the therapist and the parents' first experience of this in a gentle way. Children and parents can read this together and prepare themselves for their first therapy moment. The illustrations and language make therapy an approachable and meaningful journey- a non-threatening one by any yard stick. Play therapists will find this useful in their work with children.
