5-0 out of 5 stars READ IT NOW
This book changed my life our forth grade teacher read it to the class after we'd been having troble with cliques. evrything the book talks about is true now we solve our clique problems with out using names or using examples from the book to put the bullys in the bullyed shoes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Friend or Clique?
As an educator (elementary principal), I see students faced daily with decisions that place them to either leave someone out, or they themselves, are left out. Trevor does a fabulous job of explaining how/why a "clique" can be hurtful. Students learn how to spot "a fake", how to make and keep friends, popularity truths/myths, and tips for cliques/friendships. The book is "kid friendly" and an easy-read. At the end of 2006, this book should be made into a dvd and we can't wait! If you are not familar with Trevor's other books/dvds, make sure you check them out. They are a great resource for students - whether you are an educator or a parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars nice
i'd say is mostly for little kids because of the tone and because is a very small book (i read it in 10 minutes) and because it assumes the reader is a kid :)

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for Kids!
Chicken Soup for the Kids Soul
1-0 out of 5 stars Parents beware
I have not read this book, but my nine year old daughter has read and enjoyed most of it. Last night though, she cried herself to sleep after reading graphic stories (near the end of the book) by an incest victim whose father was sent to jail and the daughter of an injection drug user who woke up one night with police pointing guns at her. I'm sure the inclusion of these stories was well-intentioned, but there's no way they are "chicken soup" for the average kid's soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
Chicken Soup grabs everything that a kid experiences, expertly juggles all of them, weaves a wonderful book, and prints it. Voila! You get Chicken Soup for the Kid's Soul.

Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul 2 is a great book for teens because it is something we can relate to. 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must-use for any middle school classroom!
This true story written from the perspective of an 11-year-old immigrant, truly sums up the immigrant perspective. My 4th grade students, journaled each day as if he or she were the central character, and begged for each of the five chapters. This book alone, replaced a 4-week unit that I had used previously to emphasize the impact of immigration on our state.Written by the author's daughter, with photos showing then and now, it is wonderful.FYI: We used, as the final journal entry, an account written by Yehuda when he finds his journal 70 years later and recounts the years since arriving in America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Character traits nicely parallel our school's program.
The story reads well for any student needing to understand the trials and tribulations of people immigrating to the U.S.Important character traits are developed and their importance in reaching a goal are emphasized. Theartwork makes a dramatic statement to anyone who opens the book. Elementarystudents should be attracted by this outstanding feature. As a schooldirector and recently retired teacher, I purchased a copy for each of ourelementary libraries because of the qualiy of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all ages!
This review is from Debbie,Paul,Ryan and Melissa. We all modelled for the illustrator,Laurie McGaw, of this book. It was a wonderful experience since some of our grandparents left Russia and Poland because of the war and wefelt we could relate to the people in the book. The book has been presentedto the our childrens' school in conjunction with the Holocaust unit.Teachers and kids alike found the book to be very interesting andbeautifully illustrated. We recommend it to all nationalities and ages.Itis not only a book about Jewish people, but also a book about what anyimmigrants coming to North America might have experienced. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars kids at work
This is a nonfiction photographic essay book that will touch any reader's heart. Mr. Freedman seems to know the facts and life of Mr. Hine very well. There is an extensive bibliography at the end of the book as wee. The information at the end seemed hard to believe but true. The book is only 11 years old so the facts aren't that dated. There are many saddening facts in this book. It reveals the truths about child labor in the text and photos.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hate school? Your life could be so much worse...
Freedman has collected dozens of black and white photographs taken by Lewis Hine during the first decades of the twentieth century. Hine worked as an investigational photographer for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). The NCLC wanted the United States government to pass laws concerning child labor, and thought that photos of the work children did would be more effective persuaders than mere speeches and statistics. Hine traveled the nation with his camera taking photographs, sometimes despite risk to his person.5-0 out of 5 stars The meaning of tough

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good reading for children!
My 9 year-old son recently lost his father and he was not talking to me or any family members about his feelings. This book was very thorough for a young person and it helped him to open dialogue with me and start his grieving process. I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for Basic Questions of A Child Experiencing A Death
This book provides brief and blunt answers to questions many children may have and adults may not consider - it touches on 'What is a Memorial Service', 'Where does the person go', 'Am I Going To Die Too?', 'Is the Death My Fault' as well as common feelings experienced while grieving. Each topic is brief and written for a child.
1-0 out of 5 stars Childish illustration paired with Blunt realism.
I bought this for my 4 1/2 year old, she has never seen it. I found it too clinical, and not at all what I had imagined having read the other reviews. The cartoons seemed aimed at my daughters age group, yet the writing is in my opinion, not for little ones. I showed this book to my twelve year old niece, thinking maybe the target was more in her age range. Her response was an incredulous "isnt this supposed to make you feel better!?"... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a glorious book!
This book is beautiful! It presents children at all stages in their livesand shows that we are all ONE.No matter the country,no matter the race, religion, creed ,or whatever, we all share similar feelings, emotions.Children are our hope for the future and the Steckels show us that we do indeed have a future-as long as children are allowed to be children and emote in their inimitable and beautiful expressive ways.
5-0 out of 5 stars Share this book with the children in your life
You don't have to have children of your own to buy and share this book.It stops you in your tracks because it's fresh and different. It's now my number one Christmas gift this year. Thank you Richard and Michele Steckel for bringing this important message into our homes and schools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Joyous memories of childhood
This book eloquently speaks of the naive and childish belief that tolerance of others can contribute to world peace. The beauty of this simple notion is the lasting contribution of this masterful work. I highly recommend it for those with children, those who have been children, and those who believe that this world can be a better place to live.

4-0 out of 5 stars Breaking bread together.
I disagree with the reviewer here who complained about this book not showing cultural unity. How much more unified can you get than a boy sharing meals at his friends houses? If we want to promote understanding others cultures, you could hardly start at a better place than breaking bread together. Food is one of the ways we show love to our families and others. My children and I thought the book was great, and will be exploring other, similar titles.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice attempt to address multiracial issues to youth, but...
...the book fails to address our multicultural society as a whole contingent. The story follows a young white girl while she explores the diversity of her society, but does not work towards unifying the groups she meets together.
5-0 out of 5 stars Its True!
This book shows children that we may all be from different cultures, but in the simplest ways we are very much the same.It is a good first day of school book, or good multicultural education book! ... Read more

This is a fun book and I would recommend it to anyone interested in Christmas. The book looks at 12 countries around the world where Christmas is celebrated on a national scale. One reads brief, but detailed, summaries of the Christmas events and traditions of those countries. From religious celebrations to marketplace customs, and from tasty foods to fun crafts, one is presented with a vivid and enlightening picture of how poeple around the world celebrate the holiday.5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Appropriate for all ages!
As a third grade teacher, this book was a useful tool in teaching about Christmas Around the World. There are so few good books on this topic, and my students enjoyed the one page synopsis of Christmas for each of thecountries discussed (about 10).The illustrations for each country arewonderful and vivid. We were able to learn about customs from thesecountries not usually presented in other books. I would recommend this bookto any teacher, parent, or child seeking information about Christmascustoms in countries around the world in this enjoyable and fact-filledbook. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Anti-Christian Zealotry at its worst
Apparently Christianity is at the root of all evil and the cause of most misfortune that occurred in the middle ages.If it weren't for those darned Christians, it seems the world would be a much better place. St. Frances of Assis was ok, (he loved animals), but all the rest of the Christians were closed-minded, violent and supersititous.I wasn't aware that the church wouldn't let people read because it might confuse them and that many people became monks because they didn't want to go to war.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Modern-Day Thought and Practice
Ignore the obvious religious zealots who feel they have a right to shove their beliefs down the throats of everyone else in this country and the world in general:there is absolutely nothing wrong with a child learning about the realities of the middle ages, which was an era heavily influenced by the Catholic church. An adult subject matter, albeit an opportunity for quality parenting, this era was dominated by the church and many superstitious and malinformed beliefs we hold true today stem from this era of intolerance and brutality against human kind and religious freedom.
3-0 out of 5 stars Knights & Castles - what a great book!
We are studying the Medieval period; this book has been invaluable with lots of great reading, wonderful ideas and awesome crafts!!Well worth the money and enjoyed by both Mom and child!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Book
As a child, I unfortunately encountered problems with addiction in my family. I was given this book by a ffriend of my mother's. Together, my mom and I would read it, and it ultimately helped me cope with understanding "daddy's problem." I believe this is an excellent choice for children who are seeing the effects of addiction in their families. It is also a very informative books for those fortunate children who do not have to deal with addiction. It was definitely a huge help for me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great guideline for increasing communication
This title is a valuable tool in dealing with addiction issues within a family. It assists a family member or other mentor in opening the lines of communication about virtually any tough topic. The children's book givesthe child an item to take ownership in. Meanwhile, obtaining the leadersguide that accompanies the children's book will assist adults inunderstanding the developmental stages and reactions that the child isexperiencing. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Eye-Opening Experience
I knew this book delt with matters of oppression, but to see that people would actually harm children simply because they were poor, that breaks my heart. This book has many breath taking pictures of children suffering from oppression for some reason or another. The chapter on Iqbal Masih really brings it home. A HIGHLY recommended book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart
When I first read this book I didn't exactly know what it meant. After I finished I did. It is really sad that kids my age or older or younger have to do more work than I could do intwo years. It's not fair that they are being denied a childhood. They never will have the chance to fall out of a tree, or get grass stains on the new pair of jeans that they will never have. If you don't find this sad you need to find a heart, picutre yourself doing all the work. I don't think we could do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational and entertaining
A great book for kids who want to learn more about America's native cultures, or for children (like mine) who are of mixed race and want to learn more about their people and heritage. How would you have grown up in your tribe two hundred years ago? Fascinating view of early Cherokee dress, marriage customs, games, family relationships, religion and the heartbreak of The Place Where They Cried (Trail of Tears)

4-0 out of 5 stars Golf's never been so interesting
Boy or girl, young or old, readers will love reading about Tiger Woods' inspiring rise to the top of the golf world. Overcoming racism, economic hardship, and personal limitations, Tiger leads the pack at an incredibly young age. My 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter and I read this together, and we were all equally enthralled and inspired by Tiger's story. It was accessible without being overly simple. We're looking forward to reading more entries in Matt Christopher's biography series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ditch your "Biscuit's First Thanksgiving" for this.
This puts that first Thanksgiving meal in context: it's a fascinating story of the Pilgrims, their voyage to what would be Plymouth, MA, and the first hard years there. My five and six year olds sat rapt and silent for the whole thing, and it's a long book. Early American Pilgrim life was cold, buggy, stinky, and the kids had to keep wolves away from the precious planted corn hills, using a pile of rocks to defend themselves and the corn. Great, great book. I'm so sick of the usual twaddle: this one earns its stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating reading...
I couldn't put this book down until I was done. Although it was a mere 107 pages long, it was full of fascinating tidbits. My 3 children (ages 3 to 9) begged me to read more from the book as a reward for getting ready for bed in record time! This will be a book that will be in our collection from now on! Never before have I had such a healthy respect for the brave Pilgrims of Plymouth. Eating the Plates will add a special dimension to our study of the Pilgrims.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real "taste" of Pilgrim life!
If you are a teacher, if you home school your children or even if you're just a mom like me that loves history and wants to share it with her children---Eating The Plates is a great place to get started.I loved this book!Young and old alike will learn what it might have actually been like to have come across the ocean on the Mayflower.I have shared it with children from kindergarten age through junior high(and I myself as well as other adults have enjoyed it). They were all held spellbound and came away having learned a great deal of respectfor the people who settled our country and whomwe often take for granted--the Pilgrims. They were real people with hopes and dreams!Lucille Recht Penner makes them and their struggles come alive. The recipes at the end of the book were especially fun to try.I highly recommend this book ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy read, yet sad
I write that as a title because if you look into these children's eyes there is hope and sadness. It bothers me to see how these children and their families are forced to live. I live in the N CA wine country and I see the same thing going on here. Exploitation of the workers, inadequite housing, awful pay.5-0 out of 5 stars Review Of Voices From The Fields
Voices From The Fields is about nine different children all of which are Mexican/Spanish.Each tells a different story about their life. All of these children have one thing in common, they work in the fields or they have a close relative that works in a field.Their stories range from being involved with gangs to the difficulty of moving up in society. As different as these nine children may be, they all care very much for their families and believe nothing is more important. Throughout the book there are photographs of the children and their families.Photographs aid the text in describing conditions and emotions of the people being discussed.Through this mix of text and photographs emotions can be amplified.Children most importantly can aid from photographs being provided since they may not understand certain things they read; yet photographs may open the doors for them. The can better see different feelings such as joy or anger as well as people of different cultures in their own environment. It can also become apparent to children who read the book just how important family is to each of the nine children. They are all care for each other very deeply and this is obvious through the photographs.Julia Hirsch says "A far more complex and elusive relationship between text and image occurs in those books which use snapshots, or other similarly dramatic image:pictures which contain some emotional charge, such as a gesture caught in midstride, an object viewed from an unusual angle, an enigmatic facial expression, a blurred background, or deep shadows and diffuse lighting."(Hirsch, 142)Manuel Araiza talks about his home in the book and such details such as the home being comprised of one room with a kitchen.Next to the text where he is discussing these conditions is a picture of the house.Immediately we feel more sympathetic towards Manuel since we are able to see with our own eyes what he is describing to us. The photographs in this book allow children readers to "experience" a minority culture that most children otherwise would never be exposed to.Hirsch later goes on to say, "Photography in recent years has also given "visibility" to yet other aspects of the human condition which have formerly been kept from most children."(Hirsch 150)One example of these "human conditions" is presented in the book for children to learn about. This condition is the life of migrant farm workers and their families. The photographs in this book depicting ethnic minorities, which also happen to be largely immigrants, provide for an excellent learning experience for children. Books focusing on different cultures and ways of life especially ones with such rich and detailed photography are good for children. These books help to educate on material that is beyond the classroom.Emotions, feelings, and different situations are better understood. It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words, so by supplementing photographs with the text of the book children take with them a great deal more than would have been without photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Picking into migrant families lives
I have recommended this book to teachers, counselors, therapists, social workers, politicians and law enforcement officials. It takes you insidemigrant families lives and lets you share with them their success, sacrifice, and nostalgia.Beth Atkins captures morethan images in herphotographs. She captures pride, hard work, and nostalgic happy lives awayfrom home (Mexico).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful
My copy of "The Storm" came today, and it's stunning.Everyone in my office stood around in the hallway as we looked through the kids' memories and drawings, utterly absorbed. At least five people immediately said they were going to order copies -- both for themselves, and for their schools.
