5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for new arrivals
I purchased this book for a new Mexican friend, who recently moved to the U.S. for two years and speaks practically no English, while I know a smattering of Spanish. We've found it to be invaluable in helping us communicate. When it's obvious that she isn't understanding me, I can turn to the appropriate page--the kitchen, for example--and point to the picture, and she can do the same. Then we work on her pronunciation of the English word. I will probably purchase another one for myself to help me strengthen my Spanish skills. I would also consider the other language titles to correspond with those my sons are studying in school. The format is user-friendly, the color illustrations are happy, and the categories of words are vast and extremely practical--especially helpful to someone struggling to get by in a new country. My friend showed the book to her ESL teacher and was very proud when the instructor recommended the book to the rest of the class!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture dictionary
What makes this dictionary so great is that it is not in alphabetical order and it is based on themes. For example, there is a classroom theme on a page and all of the words that have to do with what is in a classroom. Also, I like the fact that their are numbers next to the object and then all of the words in Spanish and English are at the bottom half of the page. This allows you to cover up all of the words and quiz yourself.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best ever...you can find it here!
I am buying 3 more copies of this book for fellow teachers in my building. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing edition
One has to wonder if the other reviewers either didn't actually use this book or if they work for Barron's because this book is a very sloppy effort and should be an embarrassment to Barron's, especially the chief editor, Nathan Quinones. To begin with, anyone using previous editions of this book will notice that almost all of the errors remain in the book. Misspelling, misplaced accents, they're all still exactly where they were in previous editions of this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars great format -- tons of typos
I have been using this book and find the format helpful. However, I have come across numerous errors/typos, which can be confusing for a beginning language student.Additionally, the CDs included with the book do not match the lessons. It is almost as if the CDs were made for an earlier edition and never updated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy the one with the CD
This is a good textbook for learning the basics of spanish...but I wish I would have bought the version with audio CD.So make sure you do that, and you will be all set. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too easy
This past school year I took Spanish I with this textbook.I was never so unchallenged and unmotivated in my life.I gave this book 2 stars for vocabulary building, but don't count on it for anything else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible. Just horrible.
I have no clue why my high school depends so much on these books. I show these textbooks to my family members (who happen to be from Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Spain) and we all just laughed at the sheer lunacy of these textbooks. We'd learn more Spanish in "America: The Book" than from the Holt books. The translations, dialogue, reviews, and examples were all trivial and laughably disorganized. How do they expect students to learn Spanish when 60% of the text is in English? There are much more efficient and easier ways to learn Spanish, the easiest language on Earth, than from an arbitrary slop of Holt publishing. I recommend Rosetta Stone, instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars A decent Spanish textbook for average-slow paced learners.
In my school they used this book for Spanish I.I found that although it was adequate, it went at a pretty slow pace.Throughout the entire book, as far as verbs go, it only teaches the present active verb conjugations, the simple concept of being going to do something, and at the very end, the present progressive, which translates to I am running (etc.).

5-0 out of 5 stars We love this book!
My daughter is only 20 months old now, but we began reading this book to her at about 14 months. She has learned the names of fruits in spanish and how to count to 5 within a couple of weeks of beginning to read it.It is one of her favorite books along with "Oso pardo, Oso pardo...".This is one of the required books for a spanish class that she will be beginning when she turns 2.As a spanish speaker it is a really easy book for me to read with fun pictures that my daughter enjoys. Even now she loves to put her fingers in the holes to count the fruit. For parents/caregivers who are not quite as experienced in reading spanish, it may be a little difficult to pronounce some of the words, but with some help you should be able to read the words effortlessly after a few times. My parents and in-laws don't speak much english and they love reading these spanish books to their granddaughter. It's a great way for them to bond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spanish version of a classic!
This Spanish version of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is just as cute as the English version.Children will love the pages of varying sizes with holes where the caterpillar has eaten up the food.
5-0 out of 5 stars So cool!
In case you aren't familiar with this book, it is about a caterpillar who eats and eats and eats. The board book version has holes in the pages so the reader can see what he has eaten. It is so cute! The illustrations are adorable and the kids love it!We are a bilingual family so my boys have the Spansih version. It's super and very durable! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for starting your kids on Spanish
The best way to teach your children Spanish is to speak it to them. And if you don't speak Spanish? Most Spanish books for kids teach individual words, which doesn't get you very far.I have yet to find a book or cd for preschool/elementary children that teaches anything beyond animals, numbers, greetings, colors, days of the week...Adult programs are similarly useless when teaching children. How often do you ask your child, "The plane to Puerto Vallarta leaves at 3pm".
5-0 out of 5 stars Play and Learn is the single best resource I have purchased
This book and CD has changed the way I think about teaching the Spanish language at home. The language presentation allows you to enter the child's world in the Spanish language in a simple yet meaningful way. By using a natural context within themes that are important and real to the child, the language comes alive. This is not the traditional drill or list method of teaching (which I have found does not work with young children), but rather a way to allow children to acquire the language in a natural way.
4-0 out of 5 stars A gentle introduction
As a non-Spanish speaker (French is my second language), I was looking for a gentle way to introduce Spanish to my 6yo daughter. In many ways, Play and Learn Spanish works for this.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst translation I've ever seen
This is a put-down to the Spanish language. It is literally translated- word-for-word, and obviously that does not work with any kind of translation. The translator has to use his/her disgression to transmit the message through whatever type of mediumthey are working with.In this case, Dr. Seuss's writing is playful and rhyming- this translation does not do this book any justice. They should really never have published this.Even as a non-native speaker of Spanish, I know that this translation is not well-done.My suggestion-- go read "Huevos verdes con jamon", which is wonderful.

1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL TRANSLATION!!!
We first bought "Huevos Verdes con Jamon" an excellent translation of "Green Eggs and Ham."The translator, Aida E. Marcuse, managed to play with the wording to retain the "Seussian" rhyme, rhythm, and whimsy.Based on that, we bought this bilingual edition without inspecting it first--big mistake!
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible, useless
Not only does this lose all the wit and charm of the original, it's not even very good as a Spanish primer.I can't imagine a real Spanish speaker using this kind of convoluted syntax. If you're looking for a fun Spanish children's book to read, then "Huevos Verdes con Jamon" (Green Eggs and Ham) is a much better choice, as well as many of the other Aida Marcuse translations. If what you want is a good vocabulary-builder transliteration, try the Spanish versions of P.D. Eastman's Books ("Corre, Perro Corre!" or "Eres tu Mi Mama?").Anything but this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and great theme
This CD has a wonderful theme. The children on the CD go to Mexico with Senora Magica. My kids ask for Senora Magica every time they get into the car.The CD very cleverly introduces and then reviews vocabulary as part of the story. We have Beth Manners' other CD Fun Spanish and just received her new CD Playtime Spanish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our boys love it!
I bought this CD a couple years ago and our kids still love to listen to it in the car. There's alot of everyday use type words (toys, alphabet, body parts) etc while using a creative story to introduce them. I'm buying the other Beth Manner's CD and I hope it's just as good as this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to any Spanish Curriculum
Many of the parents of my Spanish students are looking for ways to give their children listening practice at home. This CD is wonderful for that - they can listen, respond, learn the music and phrases, and get an ear for Spanish that isn't mine (their teacher - most of the parents don't know Spanish). I'm hoping our local bookstore will put this on their shelves soon.

A mi hija le encanta este libro.Hace que se lo lea una y otra vez.La traduccin es bastante buena.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great dual language book to help teach opposites
I like this book, because when I read it aloud to my Spanish classes, I know the students sitting closest to me are most likely following the English with their eyes, and learning new vocabulary words because of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fred and Ted are tops in any language.
This is a whimsical book that kids really 'get'. P.D. Eastman's illustrations are wonderful as always, and each page has subtle fun touches that you might not catch the first time; rereading the book is not a chore for adults. 4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Book
I was looking for a spanish book that talked about something other than just objects. I also like the drawings and that the book is very simple. My 1 year old can really enjoy it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
We're trying to teach our daughter Spanish from an early age (she's 8 months), and reading stories to her each night. This book is pretty simplistic with two - four words per page ("sad, con triste") so it's over pretty fast. Perhaps for an older toddler who can interact a bit more and understand the meaning it would be suitable but it's not helpful right now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to any Spanish lesson
I use this book in my classes for students ages 4 all the way to 18. It's a great, and SIMPLE way to help them express themselves in Spanish! The older teens crack up as they use the phrases, but it's great because they're communicating in their target language, and the younger students all identify with the bright pictures and sturdy pages. They LOVE using the phrases from Como me siento!

My Master's thesis was a review and rating of large Spanish-English dictionaries. I find this dictionary, like all the other Larousse dictionaries, to be a good choice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mis animales
Los animales que aparecen son muy pocos y los más conocidos, como el gato, perro, caballo, etc.Esta demasiado aburrido para niños de 1-2 años.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great review or word introduction
If you know how to pronounce the Spanish words correctly, this is a great book for toddlers. I've used it with my Toddler Spanish classes, and even my 4-7 year olds as they are learning to form their own opinions and original sentences in Spanish. I love the simplistic, yet BRIGHT pictures and how wonderfully sturdy the slick pages are.
5-0 out of 5 stars I'm know about goats
I like goats. They are good people, I mean pets. I mean that they are americans, like sheep. I like to refresh my memory about goats, that is why I bought this book. It helped me remember my fun visit with some little boys and girls where I told them about my pet who was a goat. I liked the story, especially the pictures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Sweet
My son loves this book as a must read every morning when he wakes up and every night before he goes to bed. We love searching for the mouse and the flea and seeing the movement of the characters before they end up on the bed or off of it. The colors and the change from night to day are so smooth you almost dont notice it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Spanish is our native language and we speak Spanish at home so that our kids learn both Spanish and English. This book is a simple story with rather rich language, my daughter got 3 or 4 words she had never heard before. Besides, my daughter loves the story and the pictures; she likes to look for the mouse and the pulga in all of the pages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book, but not as advertised.
Unlike what the editorial review states, this book is not about 2 young men from New York. Rather, this is the Spanish translation of The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton's first and most popular book. It's about 3 teenagers and their gang from the wrong side of the tracks in 1960s Tulsa, Okla. It's a great book about friendship and growing up and I would encourage anyone to read it. If you can read the English edition, do - it flows a lot better and is more realistic.
