5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful Woman, a Beautiful Book
Samantha herself gave me a copy of this book, and I cannot tell you what a true gift it was.As a woman who has struggled with my own anxiety disorder for almost 10 years, the honesty and reality of her story moved me often to the point of tears.Everyone who feels alone with their anxiety, or who knows someone who suffers from an anxiety disorder, should read this book, if only to know that THEY ARE NOT ALONE.Knowing Samantha and seeing firsthand what a lovely, sane, compassionate, accomplished woman she has become, in spite of her disorder, makes her book all the more powerful for me, because it shows me that there is hope!I recommend this book to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars A window into somewhere you never want to go
Reading this book is almost like reading somebody else's diary.Samantha Schutz is open and honest with the most intimate details of her life during a nightmarish four year period from the end of high school through college graduation.
5-0 out of 5 stars A true gem!
Samantha Schutz's book,'I don't want to be crazy' is an amazing and vivid portrayel of a young woman's struggle with panic/anxiety disorder.I am positive this book will help many young women who are experiencing similar struggle.Further, I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a fascinating and impressive read!A wonderful first book for this author; I look forward to more publications. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars It's your misfortune, ain't none of my own
Cowboys are cool. They always have been and they always will be.It's just a fact of life, really.Like pirates, they capture the childish imagination (though we've yet to host an International Talk Like a Cowboy Day as of yet).Who wouldn't want to be able to say they could rope a buck, tame a steer, or ride a bull? It's kind of funny, then, that there aren't that many cowboy books out there for kids. You get the regular smattering of picture books, of course, and there's usually at least one non-fiction title published every year for the true fans.Chapter books, however, are less common than you might think. Thanks goodness for "A Small White Scar", then, eh?Part cowboy drama, part tale of brotherly love and hate, first-time novelist (and east Colorado native) K.A. Nazum gives this book her all. It's a nice voice and a nice book and I think that that's all there is to say about that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book of ASL for kids
I read the other reviews and I will clarify.I looked at the book and it is in ASL, no "initialized" signs as seen in signed english. It is one of the best books of it's type.A couple of the signs are hard to read the direction or orientation of the movement, that is the case with ANY of these books. There are always going to be a couple that are hard to put down on two dimentional paper, because it is a 3-D language.I noticed the sign for "Drive" is really "car", common mistake, and a "classifier" was used for "ship". Overall, a very good source.

Editorial Review

Lola is a very fussy eater. Carrots are for rabbits and peas are "toosmall and too green." One day, after rattling off her long list of despisedfoods, she ends with the vehement pronouncement, "And I absolutely will nevernot ever eat a tomato." Not convinced, Lola's older sister Charlie has an idea. She tells Lola that the orange things on the table are not carrots, but "orangetwiglets from Jupiter" and peas are in fact "green drops from Greenland." Mashedpotatoes, when pitched as "cloud fluff from the pointiest peak of Mount Fuji"suddenly seem appealing to Lola. And in the end, might she even eat a tomato?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Charlie & Lola are a great team
My 6 month old son loves to looks at these books as I read them to him, infact he's enjoyed them from about the age of 3 1/2 months. We have yet to come across the dilemma of a fussy eater, however as a former fussy eater myself, I find this book a great way to ignite your childs imagination when it comes to unpleasant foods. Lauren Childs does a wonderful job as usual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely delightful!
I just love Charlie & Lola! This is a great book!Charlie is such a lovely big brother and reminds me so much of several of the children I cared for when I lived in England.Lola is also delightful, and 'full of beans' as they say on that side of the pond. There's no need for Supernanny with these two, they are sweet, respectful, charming, imaginative and delightful.

I think this memoir was so well written I dont know what to say. The way she describes everything- I can see myself in a few chapters as she struggles with those panic attacks. I suffer the same ones, day and night worrying, and how she described them, its perfect. That book really had an impact on me. It gives people that are at their lowest, hope to keep going to find the light in the dark, whether they have a learning disorder or an anxiety one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Many Ways to Learn: Young People's Guide to Learning Disabil
My 10 year old son and I read this book together because he was resistant initially. He immediately connected with the mountain climbing analogy that the author uses to explain the challenges of a learning disability.Hesmiled and acknowledged his strengths and weaknesses when the textchallenged him to do so. The book also has a very helpful and clearexplanation of different learning disabilities, the nature of intelligenceand intelligence testing, and methods of intervention. While I am apsychologist, and have explained a fair amount to my son, it is alwayshelpful for him to hear it in another way and from another source. We planto return to some of the tips for school when school begins.I think wewill return to the mountain climbing analogy often. ... Read more

I met Marlee when this book came out. She was an absolute sweetheart. Her parents are darling as well.I just finished reading this book for a second time and was about to email and ask where is the sequal? I can't wait to read it.I am a mother of an 8 year old hearing impaired son, so Megan's loudness was very familar to me...I had many laughs with this book.It really does bring you close to home if you are a parent of a deaf or hard of hearing child.I am sure I will read this book many more times. Thanks Marlee for showing everyone what it is like to grow up deaf in Chicago!

5-0 out of 5 stars Through the Eyes of A Deaf Child
Nine-year-old Megan has always wanted a best friend. So when she hears that a new family - with a little girl the same age as her - is moving into the Bregenzer's old place, she couldn't be more ecstatic. Megan spends her days and nights sitting on her father's SUV, awaiting the arrival of a moving truck. When, on the first Saturday of summer vacation, something happens. The family arrives, complete with a little girl named Cindy, who is the owner of two large brown eyes, and a shy smile. Megan instantly decides that Cindy will be her new, and first, best friend, for she is one of the only girls in town who doesn't make fun of Megan's voice, or the fact that she's deaf. However, after learning sign language in order to communicate with Megan, the relationship begins to fall apart between the two girls. At summer camp, Megan begins hanging around with another deaf girl named Lizzie, and abandons Cindy. Now, it's back to school time, and the two girls don't know if they'll ever be able to repair their friendship.

5-0 out of 5 stars American Sign Language
I purchased this book for my six year old granddaughter because she has been showing an interest in sign. It is one of the most beautifully illustrated books I have seen and the picture associated with each letter is something she can identify with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Luminous illustrations and a different kind of ABC book
Laura Rankin's The Handmade Alphabet portrays the letters of the alphabet along with their manual alphabet counterparts in American Sign Language. Each letter receives one page on which the uppercase letter appears in a black, serif font in the upper-left corner of the page and is accompanied by a realistic illustration of a hand demonstrating the manual alphabet of American Sign Language as well as an object cleverly representing the letter."G" is demonstrated by a gloved hand; "K" is demonstrated by a baby's hand holding a key ring; "X" shows an x-ray of the hand demonstrating the sign. The illustrations of the hands are done in softly luminous colored pencil on charcoal paper, with exquisite detail. The hands are of different races, sexes, and ages. This book focuses solely on letters, but does offer a key that lists the words for the objects portrayed with each letter.Of course this book will be useful for deaf children or children with deaf parents or friends who are learning the alphabet, but may be useful for other children as well to drive home the concept of abstract symbol systems and the different ways sounds and meaning can be represented.

5-0 out of 5 stars A work of art
The beautiful illustrations - simple yet exquisite, worthy of framing.I first framed some of the pictures and presented them as gifts to some young deaf children with self esteem problems, but it was when I taught hearing adults and did the same thing that I really saw the great impact her illustrations had. It then became a "work of art" ... Read more

this book was an ok book for me. i have lost interest a lot in harry potter books and i had to push my way through this one to finish. it starts out just like every other harry potter book where harry is at it aunt's and uncle's house. he goes to hogwarts school witches and wizards. while he is there they have a tri-wizard tournament. they have a goblet where all the names are put in for 5th year students. the goblet is only suposed to pick 3 names but when the 4th one comes out of the goblet harry gets blamed for putting his name in, but he is still allowed to participate in the tournament. the first event is the is where they have to get one of a dragons egg. harry does this with little problems. the get an unexpected task and have to save thier most important person from drowning. harry does this and also saves other people friends too because he didnt want them to drown. the last task is a maze where the first one to finish wins. harry is going through it when he sees another contestantbeing killed by voldmort. he goes to save him and has to fight off voldmort. by the time he stops voldmort he is almost dead. he is healed, finishes out the year at hogwarts, and heads back to the dursleys.

3/24/04author David A Adler biography of Louis Braille is written and illustrated in a way that it will appeal more to children around 6 or 7 ,due to the illustrations(the illustrations are very warm and very colorful and a little less reflective of realism).. The book also concludes with "an important dates" page as well as a full "braille page" with embossed dots.

4-0 out of 5 stars provides a respectable understanding for visual impairment
This illustrated children's book gives children an idea of how Braille was first invented.A story of Louis Braille is told, and it shows his triumphs. The book itself doesn't use braille, buta sample alphabet isgiven in the back to show children who have no experience with it what it'slike. For educators, this book would be an asset to the elementaryclassroom because young children need to be informed and aware of blindnessas an exceptionality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from an author for A Blessed Heritage Educational Resources
I was interested in this book as a part of an upcoming curriculum on Christian character development, and I must say that I was well pleased. It tells a story that many of us in the Western world have seen only through the news media, but television cannot completely portray the plight of those caught in the middle of the resource-depleted and war-torn Ethiopia. This tale brings that story to the forefront through the lives of two young ladies, one a Christian and one an Ethiopian Jew.This story addresses stereotypes and predjudice and the fact that, at the root of all our biases, we all have far more similarities than differences.

Can you imagine for someone to travel to an extended journey from Ethiopia to Jerusalem? In the novel, The Storyteller's Beads by Jane Kurtz is the exact similar event that happened to the main characters Sahay and Rahel. The genre of the novel is fiction. The setting of the story is generally Ethiopia and Sudan, in 1980, (during the political strife and famine). It illustrates that since most Ethiopian people wanted to seek for safety, they struggle to escape to Sudan. Therefore, the novel is a refugee story.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dated, but one could abstract the plot lessons to modern times
This novella is told from the point of view of teenaged Lisa's quiet, unassuming friend Betsy.Lisa believes she is going crazy with visions, nightmares, and wild mood swings. Her parents diagnose their daughter as a drama queen and no teachers want to get involved, so a trio of Lisa's friends set out to provide talk therapy and ensure that she is never alone.
4-0 out of 5 stars Dated, but still wonderful...
I read this book several times as a teenager, and recently acquired a new copy at a yard sale. Thought I'd give it another go.
5-0 out of 5 stars a realistic look into mental illness
I read this book as a pre-teen, as I was beginning to deal with severe juvenile depression. The dark feelings and fear described in the book are real and impossibly unbearable, especially for a child. Some may believe that the material is dated (the terminology is less than PC), however, adults are still reluctant to acknowledge that children/teens experience mental illness. The book helped me to realize that I was neither "crazy" nor alone at a time when my teachers and parents labeled me as shy and typically moody. This book has stayed with me all these years, and I would recommend it to anyone who is dealing with childhood emotional issues or a child with emotional issues. As a current mental health professional, I keep several copies on hand for at-risk children and families. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps introduce complicated subject
This book is helpful as a tool for introducing bipolar disorder to young children.I read the story to my six year old and we discussed the child's life, the good and the bad. I explained that the mother had a mental illness which affected her behavior in negative ways. The book clearly states that the mother refuses treatment and how it affects the lives of her loved ones. This presents an opportunity to clarify the difference between a person seeking treatment versus one who refuses trestment. It also does a good job of describing a back-up plan for the child when mom is not well. This plan gives the little girl a sense of control and security whenher mother's behavior is chaotic or frightening.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bipolar Disorder simplified for young children
I am the mother of an adult bipolar daughter and have read this book to my grandson who is seven years old. It's right on the money. Mental illness is difficult for most adults to truly understnd let alone a child. It's vital for children to understand that their mentally ill parent still loves them even though they do "strange" things. This book provided a path for my grandson to talk about his mother and for me to try (again and again) to help him understand her illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching and effective.
An encouraging book for young children who have a mother prone to angry outbursts. This book was created to be read by children whose mother's have some sort of emotional disability, dependence or life circumstance, which can affect their children. It is gently encouraging and could easily be incorporated into any classroom or crises center. It has a very touching ending. ... Read more

I really liked this book, but I think it would have been interesting had Annie been older, with more experience instead of being so curious. But it's still worth reading. :) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Firehouse fun!
As an educator, I absolutely adore the inclusiveness portrayed in this book. So many books today which include characters with a disability, spend so much time trying to teach about a specific disability, or trying to impart a message of acceptance, that they forget the storyline. This certainly cant be said about Russ books. If it werent for the pictures, we wouldnt even know that Russ has Down syndrome and thats exactly how I like it- disability naturally.

1-0 out of 5 stars A dissppointment
Our neighbor across the street has a little girl with downs syndrome and my daugther who is 4 has started to notice that she is different from her. I wanted to get her a book that showed someone with downs syndrome doing real things so that I could use it as an example.Unfortuntately the pictures are so far away that you don't really get to see Russ.It would have been better if there were some closer photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE RUSS!
This is a terrific book about a little boy with DS who visits his uncle's firehouse in Chicago. The story is simple and clear. The photos are lovely. The actual story never mentions Russ' DS which I think is just the way it should be.He's just a little boy visiting a fire house, however, kids with DS will be excited to just see him in the photos and other kids will benefit from what I can only describe as his "normalcy".I purchased this book initially because my own son, who is almost 3, has DS.He really loves this book and it has become one of our regular story books.Which puts it in the ranks of classics like Brown Bear, and Goodnight Moon at our house.Russ is just a little boy who gets to help out around fire engines one day. What kid wouldn't want to do that! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sad but good (from an 8-year-old)
I like this book because it's a true story that happened 100 years ago. It's a sad story because Helen Keller was blind and deaf. It's a good story because after a while she understood what she was doing and she learned how to write on a typewriter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice way to first hear the Helen Keller story
This is an easy to read book (grades 1 & 2) and a wonderful tool for introducing children to Helen Keller. It tells about her struggles after becoming deaf and blind, and of her eventual triumph of learning words with the help of her teacher, Anne Sullivan. It also gives a very brief summary of her accomplishments as an adult.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Instructive/Full of Lessons and Magic
In reading Birdwing I was so captured by the quest for completeness and inclusion we all seek. This is a continuation of a Grimm brother's tale of six boys turned into swans. Here, their sister breaks the evil spell and rescues them all except for Ardwin who returns to human form with a swan's left wing.
5-0 out of 5 stars A New Classic Tale
I have been meaning to write this review for a few months now.I am afraid some of the details I wanted to comment on are now lost in the mists of memory, but I will do mybest.I read Birdwing soon after it came out, and was totally wrapped up in the story.
