"She was homeschooling gone amok." "She was an alien." "Her parents werecircus acrobats." These are only a few of the theories concocted to explainStargirl Caraway, a new 10th grader at Arizona's Mica Area High School who wearspioneer dresses and kimonos to school, strums a ukulele in the cafeteria, laughswhen there are no jokes, and dances when there is no music. The whole school, not exactly a"hotbed of nonconformity," is stunned by her, including our 16-year-old narratorLeo Borlock: "She was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. She was thefaintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl."Read more

Editorial Review

Maniac Magee is a folk story about a boy, a very excitable boy. One that can outrun dogs, hit a home run off the best pitcher in the neighborhood, tie a knot no one can undo. "Kid's gotta be a maniac," is what the folks in Two Mills say. It's also the story of how this boy, Jeffrey Lionel "Maniac" Magee, confronts racism in a small town, tries to find a home where there is none and attempts to soothe tensions between rival factions on the tough side of town. Presented as a folk tale, it's the stuff of storytelling. "The history of a kid," says Jerry Spinelli, "is one part fact, two parts legend, and three parts snowball." And for this kid, four parts of fun. Read more

Donald Zinkoff is one of the greatest kids you could ever hope to meet.He laughs easily, he likes people, he loves school, he tries to rescue lostgirls in blizzards, he talks to old ladies. The only problem is, he's a loser.Until fourth grade, Zinkoff's uncontrollable giggling in class, sloppyhandwriting, horrible flute playing, bad grades, clumsiness, and ineptitude atsports go largely unnoticed. When he blows a race for his team, however, histransition to loserdom is complete: "[Loser] is the word. It is Zinkoff's newname. It is not in the roll book." Fortunately, he doesn't really notice. 4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books i've ever read!!
In this book there is a boy named Donald Zinkoff. He has just now started the first grade. He is not fitting in very well he does everything that he is told to do by the teacher and he is always getting picked on and teased so school was not his favorite part of the day. He has a big problem where he has no friends and is not fitting in he is being made fun of and teased very much. I think that his book is a good book and i recomend that you should read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loser
The title of my book is Loser by Jerry Spinelli. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. The theme is to not bully. This book addresses bullying in a new way for me. I have always known that bullying someone can really hurt their self esteem, but Zinkoff was unaware of his treatment. Sometimes Zinkoff knew that other kids thought he was weird but it didn't ruin his life. He is more interested in the Nine Hundred Block of Willow. This street is where he met Claudia, a little girl who wears a leash. This street is also where the waiting Man lives. He sits and just waits for his brother to come back from the war that was 35 years ago. Jerry Spinelli has also written the book Stargirl in addition to Loser. These books are similar. Both main characters are the outcasts. Zinkoff is the main character of Loser. He has a sister named Polly. His best friend in 2nd grade was Andrew. Then, when Andrew moved, Zinkoff asked Hector to be his new best friend. They were only friends for a little bit. Hector just never answered the phone when Zinkoff called and never wanted to play. Their relationship was over pretty fast. Hobin was also a character in this book. He told Zinkoff he wasn't good at anything and this was the 1st time everyone, including Zinkoff, realized that he was a loser. The main conflict in the story was that Zinkoff needed to be accepted, not for himself or his self esteem, but to prove to others that he is just the same as they are. Zinkoff is naturally bad at everything. He never wins anything. He had only ever received one A in his life, and when he did all his classmates called him "Z man" the whole day. He then realized that they were blowing it way out of proportion and mocking him. His team also lost on field day because Zinkoff was the last person to finish the race in the relay and came in last. All these little things Zinkoff did made the conflict so much worse. The climax is when Zinkoff goes to middle school and isn't just a loser He is a nobody. No one even thought he was worth making fun of any more. I can't tell you the rest, but I can say it's worth reading to the end. I completely recommend this book. It gave me a better understanding of the best and right way to handle bullies. I give it 4 out of 5 stars!

Milkweed is a good book for people that like history and survival. It has enough action to keep you interested in it, and makes you feel this is happening to you. I really liked that it wasn't in the war, but it tells what happening to the other people. I really recommend this book to people who are into these kinds of stories that make you feel all the good and bad stuff is happening to you.

Jerry Spinelli manages to describe the experience of surviving in War ravaged Warsaw as a young Jewish boy, who does not even remember his own name. It is a tale of the triumph of human kindness and love over fear. The horrors of the second world war are seen through the innocent eyes of a little boy, who interprets the situations in his own, often surprising way. I highly recommend this book for adults as well as children. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Cobra vs. The Mongoose
Growing up in a family with five kids, I am very familiar with the topic of sibling rivalry- the constant squabbles, the nasty name-calling, and the occasional all-out brawl. However, the occasional fights between my siblings seem minor when compared to the non-stop warfare between the brother and sister characters in Jerry Spinelli's "Who Put That Hair in My Toothbrush?"
5-0 out of 5 stars Really funny, great book for adolescents
I remember reading this book when I was 13 or so, and how it made me laugh. The brother and sister in the story squabble just like I did with my own brother growing up.The best part of the story for me was definitely Zoe, the girl from the exotic land of.. California.Being from California myself I just found that hilarious.Great book for kids who like comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The funniest book I have ever read!
"Who Put That Hair in my Toothbrush" is a funny book. Megin calls her brother Greg, Grosso and he calls her Megamouth. They fight with doughnuts and hair. Megin met an old lady named Emilie. It was nice how Megin gave her a Number One Best Grandma award. I think that made Emilie feel happy.

Palmer is a 9 year old boy who dreads his 10th birthday. In this small town, pigeon shooting day is the big event. All the men get to shoot down the pigeons. Then any pigeons that are still alive are then killed by the 10 year old boys. For most boys this is a privilege, however, to Palmer it is the worst birthday ever. Spinelli writes about peer pressure and moral problems through Palmer's different experiences. Spinelli does an excellent job showing how a young boy learns that it's alright to be different from his peers. Sometimes parents are the hardest people to address, and Spinelli does a great job showing that although parents do not seem to understand or know what is going on, they do actually. Wringer is a wonderful coming of age story. Spinelli shows Palmer finding his own voice and expressing it to the people he is afraid of most.

5-0 out of 5 stars You're in for a Treat
This book, "Fourth Grade Rats," is about a boy having problems in the fourth grade. The main characters are Suds, Joey, Judy, Mom, and Dad.
4-0 out of 5 stars Has A Nice Lesson
Fourth Grade Rats is a story about two buddies named Suds and Joey. Suds is getting forced by Joey to become a mean rat. A rat for Joey is a person who is smelly, sloppy, bossy, fearless, and will never cry! Well.... I don't want to give the whole story away, so I won't get to far in detail. This book has a great lesson, but I'm leaving you to figure out what that lesson is. It is not the best book, but out of 10 I'd rate it 8. Jerry Spenelli did a nice job with this book, but I think he should add more humor. I hope you read this book!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Major Life Lesson, Beautifully Told
Jerry Spinelli unfolds a basic story and sprinkles humor, love, detail, and a major life lesson. Fourth Grade Rats is a book about a ten-year-old named Suds who is in fourth grade. According to the rhyme, "First grade babies, second grade cats, third grade angels, fourth grade rats", he is now supposed to be a rat. However, it isn't like him that he should steal first and second graders Twinkies, throw them off the swings, say "no" to his mom, and mess up his room, but his best friend, Joey Peterson, thinks otherwise. He tells him to get rid of his flying elephant lunchbox, eat bologna sandwiches instead of peanut butter and jelly, and to steal Twinkies and kick little kids off swings. His love, Judy Billings, goes after Joey when a bee lands on his arm and stings him--and he doesn't even cry. The major life lesson is don't let anybody pressure you into doing anything you don't want to do. I loved this book because of its major life lesson, and its detail. I would recommend this book to anybody and everybody.

Written over 20 years ago, "Space Station Seventh Grade" was author Jerry Spinelli's first published book.Oddly, he had not originally envisioned it as being written for juveniles, but instead submitted it to publishers as being written for adults.(The remnants of its adult's oriented writing can still be seen by the rather harsh language used throughout the book). It was rejected by all adult publishers, however, almost by chance juvenile publishers embraced it.Thus started the career of one finest authors of children's/young adult fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Book
Knots in my yo-yo string is a great book. This novel is about the one and only Jerry Spinelli and his childhood. The most interesting chapter to me was, When I Was King. The reason that chapter was interesting to me was that,it fun to hear about a great author being elected for class president.I give this book 4 stars out of 5 because, first when i was reading the book, i didn't like it.But as i kept reading the book, i started to like it more when i got to the middle of the book. I recormmend this book to children and adults who likes to biographies. This is a great book about a childhood of the marvelous Jerry Spinelli.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Recollection of a Writer's Life
Knots in My Yo-Yo String is an autobiography of the childhood of the writer Jerry Spinnelli. It was an excellent book.He did not hold anything back as this book showed the ups, downs, hopes, and sadness as a kid.It goes through his childhood and his many houses to his high school graduation.I have enjoyed it very much and I would recommend it to any child or child at heart.

4-0 out of 5 stars Knots in My Yo-yo String
Jerry Spinelli's autobiography is interesting and funny. He takes the reader back to the magical days of his childhood. He was a runner and a sports player. He was the perfectionist who colored inside the lines. He didn't like to read regular books but loved comic books and the sports section in the newspaper. He holds the reader's attention with his attention to detail. While reading about his neighborhood and life, the reader becomes well aware that many of these details are what he uses when he writes his books. If you're lucky, his descriptions remind you of that time in your life when you were young and the most important thing at the moment was watching a turtle cross the road. A well-written, engaging account that middle grade students will be able to relate to. Students should find interest in the fact that much of Spinelli's writing success comes from using the memories of his childhood. The only criticism is with the book's title and cover. Students might need to look beyond these two unexciting items to get started. ... Read more

A library card is a kind of magic ticket: a passport to places distant--unknown--even forbidden. In his latest offering, Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli takes that idea and spins it until the story, its characters, and all of us are dizzy, and offers it as a prize to young readers up for the ride. 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Check This Out With YOUR Library Card
Here is what I have to say about this book. I had to read it for school. And it was TERRIBLE!!! This book is plotless, useless, boring, weird, and most of all, tacky. How many books have you read that constantly mention libraries? I just did. It mentions it in every story, which gets QUITE repititive after a while. Plus, also some of the characters in this book have the weirdest names in history. For example, there is a guy in this book named Mongoose! That sounds odder than most names, (no offense to the people with unique names out there.) My advice, there is an invisible warning label on this book saying "THIS IS ONE OF JERRY SPINELLI'S FLOPS!" If you think this book is useless, great. But if you want to read it anyway, don't say the guy with the one-star review didn't warn you! So be careful. Until next time....

5-0 out of 5 stars Picklemania a review by Robert
Have you ever wanted big muscles because you are scrawny? In the book Picklemania by Jerry Spinelli, Eddie will do anything to be bigger and have muscles. First, Pickles finds a drink mix in the mall, that will give you muscles. It's called Moocho Malt and you put some of it in water. The container says it is just like a chocolate shake. Then later in school Eddie goes in the bathroom so he can try this drink. But two of the nickelheads are right there. One of the nickelheads is hanging up-side down from the stall. The other nickelhead investigates the drink and then makes Eddie drink it. That nickelhead makes Eddie drink about the rest of the container after the first drink. I don't think you are supposed to drink the whole big container right away, but Eddie is forced to. Since he drank the whole thing, is this drink going to make Eddie sick and make his hopes disappear, or is it going to give Eddie what he has wanted forever? Truly this book is hilarious, you will feel like Eddie when he is sick.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's out of print???? The world just lost a great book
I rediscovered this book in my basement and the moment I put my hands on it I had to sit down and read it. School Daze is such an incredibly funny and touching 4 book series by Jerry Spinelli. It's about these 4 sixth-graders and their adventures. There's grouchy Sunny, a cheerleader who beats up those who won't cheer; Eddie, an almost neurotic boy with a sensitive heart and a scrawny build who constantly encounters trouble with the eighth-grade Nickleheads; Salem, the aspiring writer and over-reacter whose intellect is similar to an adult but her emotions are very appropriate for her age; and my favorite, Pickles, a.k.a. Dennis Johnson, who is so cool he's almost larger than life. Jerry Spinelli writes these books so well that he makes these 4 different characters seem very natural together. This specific book, Picklemania, has several plots going on at the same time. Eddie tries to bulk up to 90 pounds, Salem tries to find her secret admirer (all in her head), Pickles prays for snow, the bus driver yells a lot, and Sunny wreaks havoc with her martial arts wannabe attitude. I wish Jerry Spinelli had written more than 4 books in this 1991-1993 series because I enjoyed them so much. Regarding anyone who is a fan of Gordon Korman, these are must-reads. Anyone who wants to forget their own problems for a while must read this. And any parent who wants their kid to read must hunt down a copy of this book, or the other 3 in the School Daze series: "Report To The Principle's Office", "Who Ran My Underware Up The Flagpole?" and "Do The Funky Pickle". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars just well done.
VERY good book, parts of it are a bit dated, not really the language, particularly, but the high school dynamic is a bit different than my was, at least. (cheerleaders, hayrides, etc, don't have the same connotation, if that makes sense).
1-0 out of 5 stars A worthless waist of time.
This book was perfectly awful. If it was possible I would have givin it zero stars. I am in the eighth grade and none of the people in my school act like this.People might be thinking this but don't actually say it out loud. This book was also degrading towards both boys and girls. The one charactor in this book who I actually liked was Marcaline.I don't recomend this book for people of of any age and anyone under 15 should absolutly not read it!Save yourself the time and put this book where it belongs. In the trash can!

4-0 out of 5 stars Jason and Marceline
Have you ever wondered if you and your friend could be more than just friends?Jason Herkimer and Marceline McAllister have only been friends for almost two years and their relationship is just starting. This relationship is filled with humor and heartbreak up against hormones. They only good thing that seems to be coming out of this new relationship is that Marceline and Jason know when to tell each other off.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Spinelli classic
Big fan of the man, really. Out of all of the School Daze series books, this is favorite. Why? Well, the first book, Report to the Princeple's Office is just not interesting, and the others ive only seen a little bit of. The book is about four friends, Sunny, Salom, Eddie, and Pickles. Eddie wants to prove to the world he is grown up despite his superman undies (wich he later burns. Sunny is a cheerleder who hates boys and always frowns. Salom is a aspiering writer who also maneges the football team. Pickles is a famus 6th grader driving the one and only pickle bus. All in all, this book is the best in the school daze series, and is a must buy for all preteens.

4-0 out of 5 stars my reveiew
this book is about four friends and some underware. their names are Sunny , Pickles, Salem and Eddie. Eddie still wares superman underware and he wants to grow up. so he burns his under ware! you'll have to read the book to find out more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Book
I like this book because it is funny. It was kind of fantasy to me. The underpants was rolled up the flagpole with 5 of somebody's friends. They were riding a skateboard together and threw their homework out the street. This book is about 5 students in the same class that didn't like school. Many times they didn't do their homework. They also got in trouble by doing wrong things. One of them ran somebody's underpants up the flagpole. But at last they didn't get in trouble. This book is likely a troublesome school. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Wrestling Book
My review on this book is a pretty good review. This book wouldn't exactly be my first choice, but it was a good book. If you were into wrestling I would highly recomend this book. It has a lot of wrestling moves and some terms listed. There are some funny parts as well. I would not recomend this book to children under 5th grade and would strongly suggest that you would at least be 10 or 11. This is a good book and I highly suggest it.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow!!!

Maisie trys out for the wrestling team and makes it, but no matter how hard she tries she always gets into trouble by her coach. Being the only girl on the the team isn't easy either. No one wants to wrestle with her. But then she meets a friend on the wrestling team his name is George Bamberger, when the team would do warm-ups they were always partners. All through the summer Maisie has has a crush an a guy named Eric Delong, who also happened to be on the wrestling team. Meanwhile, the matches had started . When the other teams realized that their 105 pounder would be wrestling a girl they would forfiet. She went through matches undefeated by forfiets. which was great in a way but on the other hand she was very upset because no one supported her for wrestling because she was a girl, but then finally there was a team that their wrestler wasn't afraid to wrestle her. Even though she lost she was still very happy that she actually got to wrestle. I loved the book it was very awesome Spinelli is a very skilled writer and his book was great.
