5-0 out of 5 stars Dreamy!
I love books that combine beautiful artwork with rich text. This is a winner in my mind! The words and pictures in this book make you feel like you're right there in the canoe, feeling and seeing all that the author describes. A dreamy little ride I'll enjoy taking again and again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Canoe Days is entrancing!
Opening this book is like getting into a canoe, taking up a paddle & gliding out into the beauty of a small lake for a day of peace & pleasure where the water & sky are one. Where neighborly deer, heron, mallards, foxes & raccoons come down to the water. A wonderful gift!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey Star Book for Young Ones
This is a fantastic book for the younger hockey fan.My son eats, sleeps and breathes hockey and wanted a hockey book that he could read himself. Most beginning reader hockey books are "childish" in nature (ex. Franklin the turtle, Arthur from PBS) and he wanted one that was really about non-fiction hockey, but for his reading level. This book is just perfect for that!Great story, inspiring for little hockey stars in the making.

5-0 out of 5 stars Astounding Children's Book
I recently purchased this book and I absolutely love it.It caught my eye with the striking illustration of the young boy's face on the cover.Throughout the book, the author takes you on an adventure thru the dreams of a young boy.Working at a daycare, this book is a favorite and always requested.I would definitely recommend this book to enhance your children's dreams and imagination.
5-0 out of 5 stars WOW a hatrick in the making!!
Wow, this inspiring book is a great learning tool for all youngsters who dream of playing hockey. Usually, Benny my little guy, has no interest in any kind of books, but since the day Benny found this book wrapped up for his birthday he hasn't been able to put it down. Benny has brought this book to school for show and tell and can even recite the lines by heart. Beautiful illustrations and captions youngsters can relate to. Five stars by far!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars hopeful
this book is hopeful because of the fact that he wanted to make sure everything was alright and so he traveled just to do so and they all thanked him in the end of his journey because he saved his owner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for a travel story
I bought this book on cassette for my 21/2 yr old son to listen to on the airplane, since it was about a vacation. He watches Clifford every day and loves the book.Although, I don't like the part about Emily Elizabeth playing with bear cubs and the mama bear comes along and Clifford saves the day and they are all friends.I think they could have written something different.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovable Clifford!
In this Clifford book, Clifford is left behind when Emily Elizabeth and her family go on vacation (too far for Clifford to walk). While my toddler would love any Clifford book right now, this is one of his favorites since it has a bus on the cover, and bears and a semi-truck inside.Plus, we both love the ending! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Center Court Sting Review
We give this book a five. One reason is because the characters play basketball. For example, Daren the main character doesn't know how to play basketball very well. Also, Daren's team name is the Rangers. Another reason is because it is exciting. Specifically, the Rangers keep scoring every time. Also, thatthe Rangers won most of the games. In conclusion, we recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chinese Handcuffs
The purpose of the author was to show the consequences of communicating and not communicating in life and death situation. For example, Dillon had a secret with his frind Jen, who was the girlfriend of his death brother and he wanted to be more than friends with her but he couldn't tell her because he knew that it was hard because she had been his brother girlfriend.I rate this book with a letter A because it is interresting how a young boy has kept the secret of his death brother by himself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Chinese Handcuffs
Looking at the title Chinese Handcuffs, I never would have expected such an ongoing book of every day, life-threatening events.I would have to say that the main idea I got from this book was communication.Communication is a key to life and in this book you find out the consequences of communicating and not communicating in life and death situations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Must Read
Chinese Handcuffs consists of content that is meant for ages 14 and up. Dillon and Jen are juniors in high school and only friends. 3-0 out of 5 stars Should help most Little League coaches
Most of the Little League coaches I have come across could probably find something to learn from this book.If you have a player who is stuggling with some part of his game, chances are some of what he or she is doing wrong is talked about in this book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Only for novices
If you are a baseball novice, or if you never played ball above the Little League level, this book may be of value to you as a coach. Otherwise, there is little here that will strike an experienced coach or player as new or insightful.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent!
I have read several books and watched several video/DVD's on baseball instruction for Little Leaguers. So far, this is my favorite. Don't let the title fool you, this book isn't just about fixing specific problems, in the process it teaches the proper methods from start to finish, whether it be hitting, throwing/catching, pitching or fielding. Other books, DVD's, videos etc., teach proper methods, but they don't teach you how to recognize problems. This book does. This book points them out for you, like recognizing a tired pitcher. No Little League pitcher will tell the coach he's tired and needs to come out of the game, after reading this book, the coach will know. I compare all other books to this one. I constantly refer to this book for a reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids!
This is a great book that empowers kids to deal with children who tease them.So often adults tell children to walk away...that is a difficult thing to do...especially for children who are learning so many life skills."that's not fair they said that", "They are so mean".So often the kids want to tell on them to get them in trouble...to find justice in the "wrong" behavior. This focuses on what the child can control and not what they can't control.
5-0 out of 5 stars Grandma Rose to the Rescue
When Simon is teased by his friends, Grandma rose compares teasing to fishing hooks and shows Simon how he doesn't have to get caught up in the mean game his friends are playing. Simon's Hook is an excellent way to teach children to be more resilient. 5-0 out of 5 stars daughter and mom both loved it

3-0 out of 5 stars No Rain Delay?
Apparently, the umpire knew nothing about a rain delay. In this most unlikely of tales, a player hits the ball in a downpour for the shortest homerun ever.Could this really happen? Not a chance. The game would have been at least delayed until the rain let up.But so what.Delightful illustrations accompany this story told for the fun of it.Wonder if the game was protested by the opposing club? They definitely would have a case.Rained enough to create huge mud puddles and the game continued?Hmmmmmm. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kirby Puckett's inspirational biography for kids
Kirby Puckett's "Be the Best You Can Be" combines his life story with his joyful philosophy of playing the game of baseball.Young readers will hear about how Kirby got grounded by his mom for getting his new suit torn playing baseball and how he went from being a high school third baseman with no power to a slugging centerfielder in the Major Leagues.Puckett talks about accepting his atypical build for a ballplayer, his joy over winning the batting title in 1989, and how great it was when the fan who caught the home run ball that won Game 6 of the 1981 World Series returned it to him.The book ends with "Kirby's Extra Innings," where he advises his young readers to "Keep on Plugging," "Remember to Have Fun," and to "Treat People Right."Greg Brown does a marvelous job of relating the story told to him because you really get the sense in this book that it is Kirby Puckett "speaking."The book is illustrated with both photographs of Puckett from grade school to the Minnesota Twins, along with watercolor paintings by Tim Houle. In terms of books where a sports star puts their name on the cover and really participates in its creation, this is a pretty classy book. But then, that is not surprising, given that we are talking about Kirby Puckett. ... I was very disappointed when I first looked at this book.It is very basic and hardly seems to provide enough information to be worthwhile. But when I read it to my four year old it solicited a string of questions. So it probably has the about the right amount of information for a very basic introduction to soccer, which is all the intended audience is ready for.Overall I would recommend it. ... Editorial Review

Imagine passing a summer drifting up and down a slow-moving river, watching as cranes, turtles, raccoons, otters, and ducks grow accustomed to your presence. Envision days spent poling the raft through lily pads and grasses, glimpsing foxes through the trees on shore. On hot, sticky nights, picture a tent set up on the raft, from which you have an unobstructed view of huge bucks drinking from the moonlit river. Nicky has no idea what he's getting into when his father drops him off for the summer at his grandmother's cottage in the woods. And he's not especially pleased at the prospect. "There's nobody to play with ... She doesn't even have a TV." But this "river rat" is not the normal kind of grandma. Without pushing, she quietly allows Nicky to discover for himself the wonders of river life. Gradually, Nicky's interest in drawing the wildlife he sees brings him closer to his artist grandmother, and to an inner peace that looks as though it will last for a lifetime. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids ages 6-100
It's a excellent book. You can imagine it really happening well you read it.It is a wonderful fast moving story.
2-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful images, flat story
As a native of Wisconsin, I had much interest in the story of a boy, his grandmother, and wildlife on a Wisconsin river. The illustrations, admittedly the author's strong suit, were strong indeed. The images were of such excellent quality that they almost made the book worthwhile. The beginning of the story held promise, but ended up spending beyond its means into imagination.Either a story of the boy visiting his grandmother for the summer and experiencing adventure on the river, or an imaginary tale of prolific so-close-you-could-touch-it wildlife would have been good.Neither was completed, and the resulting combination left me feeling flat. The experts, my two and five year-old grandchildren lost interest before the book was halfway through.Maybe for children a little bit older?I wish hope Mr. LaMarche to continue to illustrate, and a story-teller to author the books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Raft Revelation
The Raft is a book that captures the heart of the reader with its great illustrations and vivid details of na-ture. It is a story of a boy who travels to his grandmother's house for the summer but really does not want to go. Her house is by a river where Nicky discovers a raft and a love of nature. He soon realizes the raft attracts animals, encountering many he hadn't seen in real life. Animals that would normally be frightened by a human seem calmed by the raft Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Richie's Picks: BLACK AND WHITE
I know plenty of present and former middle school kids who are so totally over that racial division stuff that they study about in American history and in my wife's English classes, and that people of my generation witnessed and are always telling them about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Black and White
My Book is Black and White.I give this book 5 stars. This book is about 2 seventeen year olds Eddie and Marcus. They are the stars of the Long island High school. So Eddie and Marcus for graduation have to come up with $150.00 dollars to go to their field trip to Bear Mountain and to six flags, so they save the money and find out that Nike had come out with new b-ball shoes so they buy the shoes. They have no money left so they start to rob people and one night something bad happens. Eddie accidentally pulled the trigger on the gun and shot a man.I think that people that like basketball and how people's lives are changed in an instant.Plus I think that the author captured me because it starts a lot faster than most books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Reality Check For Two Young Stars
This is a magnificent story, it begin with Eddie Russo (White) and Marcus Brown (Black) running back to their house after they shot Sidney Parker a person they were trying to mug. They were mugging people with White's grandfather .38 caliber and they had robbed two people and accidentally shot the third guy. Then as the story progresses we find out that they had to pay their high school dues and they had their money saved up.However some new Nikes came out and everyone on the team was getting them, the two best stars couldn't be seen without them, could they? They weren't out of style, but they were out of money and desperately needed some money. So then White said "We could rob a few people to get the money and what we get we probably deserved."In the end Black is taking the heat for the chime and white seems like he's going to get off scot-free.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Biggest Enemy of Best is Good.
The Nearmont High School football season looks promising. The entire town expects great things from them --- Division, even State Championships --- and the team is on track for just such a season when they take off for preseason camp: two-a-day practices, morning wakeup calls, and Raider Pride Night, the traditional freshman initiation. Unfortunately, the ritual goes places it never should in ways that might compromise their entire season and ruin any chances they might have in college football and the pros.
5-0 out of 5 stars Richie's Picks: RAIDERS NIGHT
(Since writing this review, I have now read the book a second and a third time. This is definitely one of the best YA books of 2006 and unquestionably one of the best YA books relating to high school sports that I have ever read.)

Editorial Review

Sharon Draper has indeed forged a fiery name for herself in the field of young adult literature--that of a courageous writer, willing to tackle tough, real-life problems while developing honorable, streetwise role models for troubled teens. Her previous novel,
