5-0 out of 5 stars A great read-aloud book!
This is an excellent book for reading aloud, especially to a group of toddlers! It's light and easy to hold. The text is large and clear. There is a nice rhythm to the simple and concise sentences. The colorful collage illustrations are almost all double-page vertical, easy to see from a distance, and consist of objects children will be anxious to point out and identify. At the end of this simple story about building a snowman there is a section that pictures and identifies the items used in the collages: buttons, fabrics, fruits, buttons, etc. It's perfect for a game of: "where can you find this [bell] in the story?" "How many of these [seeds] can you find?", and perfect as a springboard for a snowman craft using items from your own sack of 'good stuff'.There is also an explanation of snow with photographs of real snowmen, and directions for making popcorn balls. This book is fun to read and look at, well worth reading over and over.

4-0 out of 5 stars Snowball o' fun
You walk into your first encounter with "Snowballs" with the vague sense that this is going to be yet another winter picture book containing figures made out of cut paper. And though you are well aware of Ezra Jack Keats's "The Snowy Day", you decide to give Lois Ehlert's book a go anyway. You're hoping you'll end up pleasantly surprised by what you may find. And you're in luck. You are.5-0 out of 5 stars gherring
My 4 year old son loves this book.We first learned of the book in his preschool. He came home one day and talked about this book all afternoon. The next day we checked it out at the library and liked it a lot. The book is very creative and colorful which captures a young child's attention. There are so many different items that we could identify and learn. My sonwants me to read this book many times throughout the day and frequentlyasks when it is going to snow. This is a great book by Lois Ehlert. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars george is wonderful
George is good to read after an exasperating day with your toddler or preschooler. It reminds you that it could be worse, you could REALLY have a monkey to care for, and your monkeys don't really mean to get into mischief, they are just very very curiouus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just as good as the original stories
To date my daughter has been reading the "Curious George" books that belonged to my husband when he was a child. I was a little skeptical that the newly written stories would capture the same spirit as thosewritten more than 30 years ago. However, my daughter absolutely loved itespecially as both the storyline and the illustrations were more detailedthan usual and made it fun for her to point out different things and extendinto a discussion with us about beaches, lifesaving etc. Like her other"George" books she has reread this one over and over. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a great novel about the passions, dreams, and aspirations of a young boy

4-0 out of 5 stars Mickey and Me
Mickey and me is about a boy named Joe Stoshack that can travel through time using baseball cards. His father gets in a car accident and asks Joe to go back in time to keep Mickey Mantle from an injury that ended his career as a great player. He travels back in time with a Mickey Mantle card(or so he thinks). He does meet Mickey, but is it the right one? Read this book to find out.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is the best ever
What I like about this book is how Joe Stoshack's dad has been hiding a Mickey Mantle baseball card for years under a floor board! I hate how they threw trash at people back then if something totally bad happened in baseball. I like when Joe was dressed up in a chicken suit as the team mascot and he had to throw a ball through Hitler's tooth. If he did it, then everyone in the ball park would receive a free movie pass to see Judy Garland's "Meet Me in St. Louis."He missed, so they threw trash at him! Later on in the story he had a chance to do it again and he did it. My most favorite part of all is when he's sitting next to 13 year old Mickey Mantle on a train and he never even realized it! I never thought Joe would be bullied in the story. In the story the girls from the past called him Josephine.Joe is supposed to go back in time to Mickey Mantle, but instead he meets a different Mickey. So the question is where is Joe Stoshack?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Chinese Jackie Robinson?
I loved this book. As a teacher, there is nothing better than a multicultural children's chapter book, with American history and a plethora of vicarious experiences. This is a great book to teach children about immigration and traditional Chinese customs. It wasn't until college that I learned some of these customs and it was also then that I learned that all I had to do was read Lord's book and I would've had the knowledge that it took me 20 years to get. The young girl in the story, Shirley, takes children through a whirlwind of adventures and experiences that children can relate to and learn from. This is a great multi-cultural book to add to your collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm 8 and loved this book
It was definitely a book to read over a period of time (say one chapter per night). It was very well written and I loved the chants!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent children's story!
I read this one when I was ten, and recently bought a copy for my three daughters to enjoy. I read this one at least 7 or 8 times myself.... Lord creates a wonderful character in Shirley who has to adapt to a whole new culture on her way to becoming an American. I recommend this one for all kids, not just those interested in sports.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cultural tension of Canada told through hockey
The Hockey Sweater is a book that I grew up loving and when I entered Teacher's College (Primary) I made it priority to have it in my library. I have found the book is excellent to read to students of all ages. The religious connotation is not a problem for public schools as long as a pre-intro is given to tell children that the Quebe education system was for the majority made up of Catholic schools. 2-0 out of 5 stars blah ending
what i thought would be a great book for my 2 hockey players ( ages 6 + 9), we were all dissapointed in the ending.the story builds as the boy is the only one with a different sweater from everyone else.Instead of something great happening to him, it ends with him in church praying that moths eat the sweater.period , thats the end. not very inspirational for your kids.want a great hockey book?get "The Magical Hockey Stick" its great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Canuck Childrens Book Hits Home with American Dude
The Hockey Sweater is such a nice little childrens book that can melt the heart of any hockey fan no matter how old. The book is great for young people, the illustrations are adorable and there is some hockey history laid in the book as well. It is a nice look back on a semi-forgotten time and it is nice to introduce old-school hockey to the youngsters. I am going to read this book to my nephew once he is old enough and if that is not recommendation enough to get your hands on this book yourself, then I am lost for words. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ABC and Hockey Book!
My 5 year old son loved this book. It is a great way for young hockey fans to learn their ABCs. It has some really nice art work. It also has more in depth hockey information for older kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hard-Hitting Winner!
This book hit me hard. It is an absolute joy to read. I originally bought it as an afterthought to add to a display of Canadian themed books for my students to read in their spare time, but once I actually picked it up and read it, I realized its full potential. This is a great book to add to all collections regardless of age or gender. While hockey buffs will immediately be drawn to this book, others will fall in love with it, too. Also, it would make a great gift for so many people I know. An awesome find!

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby & Parents Smile Every Time We Read TUMBLE BUMBLE!
TUMBLE BUMBLE is an awesomely fun book. We have a board book printing, which seems to be currently unavailable new. My 14 month old has been asking us to read it over and over for 2 months now, and none of us is tired of it. The singsong rhyme feels natural and unforced. The pictures and story are charming without being sticky sweet. This is a great early story book -- enough story to keep parents happy but never too much text on one page. My baby is getting interested in the growing parade of animals and calls out the name of his favorite ("beeeeeeee!") when we meet it, and then finds the bee again on each page. There's a chance to name things (9 animals + a boy) and to count things.

My family is a huge fan of this book & we have bought it several times for others.Once you've read it a couple of times, it is easy to memorize as it has a sing-song quality about it.By the time our daughter was 2, she was able to recite parts of each page.I highly recommend it!

Editorial Review

Gaily tied up with two red ribbons, Lucy Cousins's unusual, delightful, virtually wordless "book" is in fact a triple pop-up. When you open the covers (vertically, like a door, rather than horizontally), you are introduced to this endearing rodent's kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, like three little dollhouses. In the boldly colorful kitchen is a pop-up table and chairs, and a pop-out-from-the-wall set of cabinets, complete with a range that opens to reveal a baking pie, and many other distractions. Turn the "page" and you come to a bathroom complete with a mirror on the wall, a liftable toilet seat, and a little figure of Maisy to stand in the shower stall. Each room comes with a sheet containing cut-out objects like clothing and small furnishings, to be arranged at will. In the bedroom, a tab turns a window scene from day to night and back again, and a clothes chest has real sliding drawers. Maisy is a character small children can fall in love with. Ingenious. 5-0 out of 5 stars Maisy's Big Flap Book
Allthe children I work with love this book(pre-school age). They are engaged for extended periods of time in pretend play. Also a wonderful educational tool in which to elicit important vocabulary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!
I bought this because my daughter LOVES Maisy.I thought she was too young for it (2 years old), but one rainy day I pulled it out because I was deperate for something to do.She loved it immediately and played with it for hours! My only suggestion is to laminate or tape up (with clear packing tape) the Maisy and Panda since they get worn out very easily.I know Maisy's arms don't move then, but my daughter didn't seem to mind.Otherwise, this will provide hours of fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I purchased this book and the Maisy Farm book to take on vacation with us. They traveled well and when we opened the book we loved the playhouse. My 3 year old laughed with joy when she say Maisy and all the wonderful things in her house. Best yet - when we left vacation we folded the book and packed it. This is one of her favorite toys now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A story, a little history and a treat to the readers eyes!
I like that this book starts as soon as you open the book.. not 3 pages later! On the inside cover with items one might use to make a kite. The next page shows the narrator and her family at the store picking out these items on a beautiful windy day made for kite flying!
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, colorful, and like a kite.. surprising in direction
Grace Lin's pages are filled with spirograph-like swirls, bright patterns, bold colors, and even more colors. The inside cover is filled with drawings of the tools needed to make a kite (paper, scissors, paint, glue, etc), while the back inside cover is filled with the meanings attributed to the types of kites you fly (dragons for wisdom, dragonflies for Summer, butterflies for love, fish for abundance, taods for long life, etc). The whole family is involved in making the feng zheng kite, and then they ascend a hill to fly it with other families. She closes the book by asking the reader to imagine what people's kites are saying about their wishes and desires.

5-0 out of 5 stars High-flying fun
In "Kite Flying," by Grace Lin, a family makes a dragon kite together and then takes it out for a flight. It's a simple story that effectively combines brightly colored illustrations with an easy-to-read text. Sample text: "It is a good day for kites." It's an enjoyable story that is also a positive portrayal of a family at work on a project together.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for hockey fans
I bought this book for my granddaughter who is hockey fan and loves the game. She really was interested in learning her numbers. We are a hockey family and anything that can help my granddaughter is a winner in my book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Napier's Law of Great Hockey Books
Thank goodness for "tag-up" offsides, because Matt Napier just tagged-up back into the writing zone and bagged himself a literary hat trick: reading, writing and the oft-misspelled 'rithmatic.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Shivers cousins have done it again!
The book is truthful, it doesn't cut any corners and shows each team-mate in his true colors. The ups and downs of the team are covered. How these trials are dealt with is what made the team, and this book, excel. Harriers is a must read for any athlete or coach.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jim Enright - author of Flagstaff Hill
Highly recommended for cross-country runners and their coaches.
4-0 out of 5 stars High School Cross-Country Breakout: Memiors of State Champions
This is a true account of cross-country seasons at Salem HS written by two gifted students on the team. This is a participant's view of a team that over the course of two years develops from a very competitive region team to a team that wins State. The book is well detailed on cross-country in the sense that the student authors appropriately make the point that no matter how good the top runners are on a team, and they have several excellent runners, winning a championship depends on where your 5th man finishes. The other nice emphasis, as the authors nicely describe, is how each individual develops in training and in actual races. You get a nice feel for cross-country racing as the authors give a personal perspective on what it is like to prepare for race day, how they determine their race plans (preference for pace or going out with the leaders), the effect of the course terrain and the weather and what it is like on those days that you feel great and those when you know you don't have it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teacher's Grade: B
Mike Lupica has written an enjoyable, but highly predictable, story that will entertain 9-13 year old boys as much as High School Musical did.The story is a familiar one to anyone that has ever seen "The Bad News Bears"-genre of movie.Like all the movies in that genre, this plot centers around an underdog team being coached by a washed up adult. The ultimate ending won't come as any surprise to intelligent readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars author short on talent
Big mouth who writes so amateurishly and predictably that I might as well have stopped on page 4. Sorry Mike, you may have been able to fashion a minor columnist and broadcaster career out of being a flamboyantly idiotic fop, but when you try to write fiction, I'm afraid you come up short ... like you are.

I really like this book because the book is about a very talented black man that was good at what he did so he as will played baseball player. And that he was a good home run hitter he lead the leauge for a couple of years back in the day.I think the characters was one of the most vived part of the book because when they were talking about Babe and the boy. I could pic ture myself meeting Babe. I think the setting was the second most vived part of the book because I could picture the year and everything. The year was most likely the late 1800's early 1900's

3-0 out of 5 stars Book Review: Babe& Me
WOW the book The Babe& Me by Dan Gutman was one of the greatest books I've ever read!!! The novel is historic because when Joe Stochak went back in time with his father to witness if Babe Ruth called his elusive home run shot in the 1932 World Series against the Chicago Cubs. At First the book didn't really catch my attention until the last couple of chapters. This book caught my attention by the genre because I'm really interested in historic fiction. I loved the way Dan Gutman was so descriptive about baseball fans at a game such as chanting, name-calling and rude slang. After reading this book I am really looking forward to reading some more Dan Gutman sports series. ... Read more
