5-0 out of 5 stars Breaking the Barrier
Jackie & Me by Dan Gutman is a very good book. It tells the story of a kid, Joe Stoshack, who can use baseball cards to travel through time. One day, Joe decides he wants to go back to 1947 when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball. He wants to know what it was like for Jackie and his family to go through this hard time of racism and prejudice. But little does Joe know he going to learn, first hand, what its like to be a black person in the 1940s. He goes through the tough times of people calling him nasty racial slurs, to people who could care less if he was black or white, to being chased by a crazy kid with a bat through the busy streets of Brooklyn. Learn what happens to Joe and Jackie in this great and exilarting book: Jackie & Me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Honus and Me
The novel, Honus and Me was an exciting book to read. I enjoyed this book because it was based on sports. (Baseball) this was cool cause I could make a lot of connections.

This is a great chapter book for kids that love baseball, baseball history and baseball card collecting.Recommend this book and authors other books

3-0 out of 5 stars Average Joe
The book i read was Honus and Me by Dan Gutman. I thought that this book was an ok book because some parts of the book were not very clear and boring. The good things about this book is that it is a baseball series and and they have very good baseball player in it [Honus Wagner] and thats what makes this book good and interesting. If I had to rate this book i on a five star scale i would give it a 3 1/2 stars for this book because it was an average book cause of the weak parts. So I think that that you should read this book but you don't have too.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Book For All Sports Fans
One of the books I read this summer was "The Million Dollar Shot" by Dan Gutman. I chose this book because it sounded really interesting and because I like basketball.
5-0 out of 5 stars [...] book selection for June 2006
Boys love reading books by Dan Gutman because so many of his books are about sports (I especially enjoyed his book on Satchel Paige). I think this one is one of my favorites because there are so many subplots taking place. When 11-year-old Eddie Ball gets the chance to sink a halftime free throw during the NBA finals worth a million dollars, all sorts of interesting twists ensue.[...]Make sure to read more about the impact of The Lazy Readers' Book Club on boys who are reluctant readers on the June 2006 blog.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps boys become interested in reading
As an elementary educator, I often find it difficult to engage boys in reading, particularly chapter books. The Million Dollar Shot is a great book to suggest to boys who find reading "boring."My students, boys and girls alike, love the story, relate to the characters and enjoy the author's style. The questions and activities at the end are terrific for literature circles. ... Read more

Very good review of a current sports star.Easy for my 7 year old daughter to understand and keep her interested.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mia Hamm and How She Started
I would recommend this book not only to people who love soccer, but to everyone who enjoys a true story about a great athlete and role model. The story of Mia Hamm is basically about how she was introduced to soccer and how she follows her dream to be the best women's soccer player in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is really better than it looks like!
On teh field with Mia Hamm by Matt Christopher was a very goodbook.I didn't have a very good idea who Mia Hamm really was though. The only thing I know is a professional soccer player.I aw the book and it looked pretty interesting.I'm about a quarter of the way through the book and I'm liking it so far.Usually I don't read books , let alone a whole book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for toddlers
My two year old loves this book and quickly learned all the poses. The book has a few basic poses which are renamed for the animal they mimic. For example, "standing forward bend" is renamed "monkey" because the pose resembles a monkey bending over. The illustrations and text are simple and the back of the book has photos of actual children doing the poses along with some parental tips. It's a great book and I highly recommend it. It's also a great gift idea for a young child whose mom practices yoga.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for active toddler
My 2 yr. old loves this book. The pictures are fun and easy to copy. It's a great way to keep her active when we have limited space.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intorduction to Yoga for little ones!
My daughter got this for Christmas and loves it.At 17 months old and she and her cousin, who is 2, do all the poses. Not always correctly but, they practice all the time. They always look for the book in the book shelf and have memorized the easy words and poses. It's adorable to see them becoming little Yogis!A fun book even for those that know nothing about Yoga as it relates the poses to well known animals and includes photos of toddlers doing the poses in the back as well as tips and an explanation for parents for teaching the poses correctly. As a former Yoga teacher, I highly recomend this book. ... Editorial Review

So what if he's legally blind? Even with his bottle-thick, bug-eyed glasses, Paul Fisher can see better than most people. He can see the lies his parents and brother live out, day after day. No one ever listens to Paul, though--until the family moves to Tangerine. In Tangerine, even a blind, geeky, alien freak can become cool. Who knows? Paul might even become a hero! Edward Bloor's debut novel sparkles with wit, authenticity, unexpected plot twists, and heart. The writing is so fine, the story so triumphant, that you just might stand up and shout when you get to the end. Hooray! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tangerine Book Review
This bookis outstanding.it talks about reletionships and tradgedy as well as disabilities and the truth. I gave this book a five star rating because of the apparent time, thought and effort put into the creative text. My absolute favorite part of this book is the very ending because it shows remembrance of a lost freind. I would recommend this book to people with interests such as soccer, and ages 11-14 because of the setting at a Tangerine Middle School and Lake Windsor Middle School.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ummm...Fantastic!
Tangerine was an "read catching" book. When my language arts class read it I couldn't help but pay attention.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Student's Review
I think kids from ages 10 and up could read this book. I think this because there is some swearing in it, and this book has kids of this age in it, so it will probly be easier for them to conect with the characters. The author made it clear that she likes to leave her readers on the edge of their chairs, because this book was very mystrious and suspensful. That was the one thing I liked about this book. Over all the book Tangerine was very good! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lyrical pictures of the Babe hitting a home run
When I first saw the cover painting by Mike Wimmer on "Home Run" I was not sure if it was supposed to be Babe Ruth.In his glory days the Bambino had a body like an inverted pyramid, with those broad shoulders tapering down to those thin little ankles and tiny feet, and there are some paintings in "Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth" that do not especially look like the Babe. However, those are few and far between.5-0 out of 5 stars For the child who loves baseball and has two left feet.
Purchased this for my nephew who is overweight, uncoordinated and loves playing baseball.Reading this to him increased his joy of the game and gave him confidence to keep trying to improve his own skills.Taught him to do best with the skills he had right now and even how to deal with successes in life. This level of understanding was terrific for children and adult alike.Excellent book for sharing special time with children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that lives in the moment
This books opens with the Great Bambino as a child. Remindingyou of your own innocent childhood. It then leaps to his professinalcareer where it slows down to one at bat. (the moment) It is written with a grace for detail that makes you feel like part of the story. You hear the crack of the bat, feel the dirt under your spikes, the "soft hardness of the base", and hear the defening sound of the crowd. This book brings tears to my eyes everytime I read it to my daughter and my son. Maybe one day they will read it to their children and know why.END ... Read more

Joey Pigza Loses Control by Jack Gantos was a great book. This book was very funny because of all the dumb things they did in the story. You will have to read the story to find what they did. During his summer, Joey Pigza goes to visit his dad who he hasn't visited in a very long time. His mother, no longer being married to him, does not trust Joey's father for he has had many addiction problems and was very childlike and immature. From his father, Joey inherited ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), which he has dealt with by using patches that supply him with his medications. When he visits his father though, his father doesn't believe in the patches and flushes them down the toilet. Here start the constant wacky events of Joey Pigza's summer with his father.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food for Thought, A Fast-Paced Plot, and Teen-Friendly Trappings: Masterful
Rash by Pete Hautman is a wry look at a possible 2070s United States, now called the USSA (United Safer States of America? United Socialist States of America?). In this dystopian society, Americans (as well as people in most other countries) have traded freedom and independence for safety. It's no longer legal to play football, or to run without wearing extensive padding a helmet. Alcohol, cigarettes, temper tantrums, hunting, large dogs - all illegal. Three quarters of people over the age of ten are on the drug Levulor, which slows their reflexes, and helps them to keep their tempers in check.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Great Quarter Back Switch
This book is about two twins that love the game of football, but one of the twins is handicaped. When his other brother plays in the football games, they switched their minds and the twin that was normal would be sitting in the wheelchair. I think that this book is very good. Its not the greatest, but its good for kids like in the middle school or junior high. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A father and son go to watch Jackie Robinson during his rookie season of 1947
You should know going into "Dad, Jackie, and Me" that this story is a work of fiction, but as Myron Uhlberg explains in his Author's Note at the back of the book parts of it are based in truth. That fact does not take away from the power of the story and when you understand the truth behind the story you will understand why Uhlberg comes up with the perfect ending that he does.Uhlberg was born in Brooklyn, New York, the hearing child of two deaf parents. This story begins on Opening Day in 1947, when Jackie Robinson became the first Negro player in Major League baseball with a young boy listening to the game on the radio and rooting for the Dodgers and Jackie Robinson (and against the New York Giants). Then one day the boy's father comes home early from work and announces that they are going to Ebbets Field to see the Dodgers play the Giants. The boy's father is deaf, and so he signed the words with his hand instead of saying them out loud.
5-0 out of 5 stars Myron rocks!
"Dad, Jackie, and Me" is a fabulous story about a father and a son, about prejudice and triumph.Myron Uhlberg subtly creates a parallel between the unfair discrimination against his father for being deaf and Jackie Robinson for being African-American.This is a touching book with lovely illustrations...not to mention so many dimensions for a classroom teacher to explore with students!Plus, I met Myron today, and he is one of THE most warm, friendly, wonderful authors I have ever met.I give him and his works my most glowing pr
