5-0 out of 5 stars ATeachers Point of View
I love using this book with my students (I remember reading Curious George as a child). There are a number of issues that my students and I talk about. We talk about responsibility (it was the newsboys job to deliver the papers...not George's), bicycle safty (George should be wearing a helmet), and stranger danger (George should not have gotten into the truck with the two men.I always make the paper boat with my students.Curious George books have held up for many, many years...I am sure that they will be around for many, many more.

3-0 out of 5 stars George on the move
In this outing, the Man in the Yellow Hat gets George a bicycle to celebrate their third-year anniversary of living together. Riding the bike in front of their home leads George into a series of adventures that take him further and further from home. He starts off by helping the newspaper boy to deliver papers, and then becomes involved in floating paper boats down a little stream. After his bicycle is damaged in an accident, a traveling circus meets George and allows him to participate in their show for the night. While at the circus, he accidentally feeds an ostrich a bugle, and then redeems himself by tracking down and retrieving an escaped bear cub.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaches good sportsmanship...
The story is a favorite in our house. It's got cute pictures and a great message about being a good sport. When Mia quits she is made to sit out the next time and she realizes that it's more fun to play then to get upset about the game. It's nice that you don't know if she makes a goal at the end because it doesn't really matter if she does. What matters is that she's being a good sport.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great message for little ones!
My four year old twins boys love this book and really got the message of the book. They just started playing soccer and were having a difficult time enjoying themselves and didn't want to see it through. After reading them this book, they see that it's just for fun and it's just a game.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Froggy fans!
What can I say......the Froggy book series are fantastic! Jonathon London writes so well that children can help but enjoy the book. And Frank Remkiewicz is a wonderful illustrator - he makes the books come alive with his drawings of Froggy and the rest of the gang!4-0 out of 5 stars The Kids really enjoy it
I and my children found this book helpful whendiscussing fears and swimming lessons. Not only is the book fun to read (neat sounds, etc.), ithas the added bonus of providing two useful teaching tools for beginning swimmers.I have to say that the part where Froggy loses his bathing suit is over done, and really is not necessary to the storey. It conveys embarrasment about nudity when it really isn't necessary. A little skillful editing while reading can minimize this.Thebottom line is that I and my son found the book helpful, it is wellwritten, and has enjoyable illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Froggy & skills mastery
I agree with the other reviews that this book is especially splendid in it's illustrations, text and message.Like many young children, Froggy is fearful of the water (and, presumably, other new experiences). However, bytaking it at his own pace, and with the encouragement of his mother, hesoon masters his skills at swimming (anyone who has or works with youngchildren will empathize with a tired mom & dad frog who are stillwaiting patiently on into the night as Froggy practices his new learning). While very cute, age appropriate and fun, I have only one criticism:atone point, no doubt for humorous effect, Froggy looses his bathing suit and"turns more red than green."Demanding his parents NOT to look,he skedaddles into the bushes and re-suits.Perhaps I'm reading into thistoo much, but I would hope that children don't come to devolop negativebody issues re: being nude, especially around their own parents (no oneelse is at the beach with Froggy, Mom & Dad).My only concern is thatthis might reinforce the unnecessary shameful aspect of nudity that peoplein this country embrace and that, IMHO, is often one of the issues thatlead to negative body image in children in America (why do you think wehave so many anorexic/bulimic children here??) ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Double Dutch
I am a middle school Language Arts teacher who teaches high-level eighth grade students (in other words, VERY smart, motivated, and voracious readers). I suspect that when Sharon Draper was a teacher, she taught some lower-level students because this book seems to be clearly geared towards those students.
3-0 out of 5 stars not my fave
this book was ok but it was missing something. the thing that got me the most was the way the kids talked. i'm in 8th grade and i don't talk like that. i mean who says peace out anymore? overall i thought it was a good book, but i have other books i'd rather read.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book!
The book I have read was Double Dutch by Sharron M.Daper. I chose this book because it looked interesting. The main characters are; Delia, Randy, Yolanda, Toliver Twins, Cherline, and Narrator. Girls will most likely like this book because of the drama, and double dutching (ages:12-15).The main events are, Delia has a secret she can't read, and the finials of the Double Dutch competion. The theme of this book is friends are there for you no mater what.

The Team That Couldn't Lose by Matt Christopher is a very interesting book. The characters are Coach Kash, Chip Chase, and the rest of the Cayugans football team. 4-0 out of 5 stars great read!
I really enjoyed Dairy Queen. It did drag a bit, perhaps, in the first half, but I stayed up late to finish it.Much more compelling and enjoyable than other YA's I've read lately.D.J.'s voice is what makes this story come alive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dairy Queen a surprise read
I never would have believed Catherine Gilbert Murdock's debut teen novel, Dairy Queen, about a fifteen-year-old Wisconsin farm girl whose family is steeped in football would keep me up all night reading, but that is what happened. I refused to stop reading the perfect-pitched voice of her protagonist, D.J. (Dorrie) Schwenk. Second, Murdoch's book is definitely against type when it comes to characters and subject matter.
3-0 out of 5 stars Half of a Good Story
I'm going to disagree with what everyone else here has written.I thought the first half of this book dragged and I didn't see what all the praise was about. Ms. Murdock needed a stronger editor, in my opinion.I'm not entirely sure why I read that far except that I was stuck on a plane.I don't know if my students, would give the book to page 130 or so to pick up.

I bought this for my 11 year old because it was one of 5 books on his required reading list for summer vacation. He actually read it and told me what a great book it was. He recommended it to one of his friends and told him that it was a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars S.O.R. LOSER REVIEW
This book S.O.R. Losers by Avi was about a school that is really big on sports and famous for not losing a single game all season. That all changes when some seventh grader non-jocks form a soccer team. Their new team is terrible. Their parents and the school cheer them on and insist that they do better. The crowd's cheers really helped them do a lot better than they were doing. 4-0 out of 5 stars SOR Review

Small simple story, excellent art work, funny...the kids love this one to the read to them and they do enjoy the rather good illustrations.I like reading this one to the class myself and probably enjoy it as much as the kids do.It is a rather off beat story featuring a rather off beat penguin - it is different.Overall, highly recommend this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars review of Teddy Bear's Picnic by Megan Fleming
The Teddy Bear's Picnic was a fairly good book. I needed to read it two times to really understand it. It would be confusing for kids under 8 years old. The way the author and illustrator showed the humans dressed in teddy bear costumes was a clever contrast to the teddy bears wearing human masks. It kept this reader guessing as to who the real teddy bears were. The illustrations were vibrant in color and followed with the authors text. Overall it was a fun and playfyul book beautifully illustrated, but hard to follow.

This book is HILARIOUS! (I sure hope I spelled that right) Anyway, my teacher read the ORIGINAL version to us and then I read the revised version. The original is a lot better. I don't know if they sell it anymore but you should get that one. And, he put voices in. (It's a lot more fun that way)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nonstop Laugh Riot
I recall vividly reading this book for the first time in the 4th grade after I'd finished the first part of one of our state's standardized tests while waiting for everyone else to finish, and drawing nasty glares (and eventually an ominous note) from my teacher who informed me that she was glad the book was so funny, but that I would need to continue reading it outside of class when I wouldn't be such a distraction to the other students!

The book, Skinnybones, was about a boy that gets in trouble by telling lies.I think the book was actually very funny because the boy makes very funny jokes.I wish the author had Alex win the game because it would be good for Alex to be cocky and TJ to lose.I would recommend this book to people who like comedy because it is funny. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Interaction at its Best
Great book. What an easy way to get children involved with writing associated with literature. Not only does The Best Part of Me expose children to engaging prose, which they can relate to, it also gets them thinking about what they might say about their own bodies. This is an easy and instant writing project for any classroom, K-12, and the end project creates a terrific bulletin board. The book is worth every cent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review - Pucky Quijano
I gave the story 4 out of 5 stars because the beginning, middle and end were very good.I loved the end the most because Jake did something that he believed would help the coach get better after being shot.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Warriors
This book wasn't the best book I've ever read, and it wasn't the worst either. This book was mostly about a kid named Jake who tells you about his lacrosse games.

1-0 out of 5 stars OK Book
I found this book to be a little on the "mystical" side of Native culture. As a Indigenous woman on this continent I found the first few chapters a little stereotypcial and disheartening. I know this author is suppose to be of the Abenaki people but I just can not tell. I feel it is written for the intention of a Non-Native audience so that they can understand it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You can actually feel the sun
Recently I've been shying away from reviewing picture books. Not out of any particular dislike of them, of course.I just hadn't run across one recently that really whet my whistle.Earlier in the year I heard some librarians commenting on the various picture books of 2006 that struck them as particularly fine. One title that cropped up was Elisha Cooper's, "Beach".I'd seen the cover before and there wasn't much there to lead me to think of it as a strong contender for awards.Pretty cover, yes.Oh, the same author as created "Magic Thinks Big"?Nice, nice.Big format, so that's enjoyable. With all these thoughts sloshing about in my head, it wasn't really until I was on my lunch break one day that I thought to go ahead and, oh I don't know, pick it up and read it.I found myself charmed.Utterly and wholly charmed.I'm not saying "Beach" is gonna totally blow away all your conceptions of what a beach picture book constitutes.I'm just saying that alongside David Wiesner's, "Flotsam", and Chris Gall's, "Dear Fish", there has never been a better time for shore-related picture book fare.
5-0 out of 5 stars a superb bookwith rare appeal for grown-ups as well as children
With its large format, keenly observed, beautifully rendered, marvelous images, that manage to be at once acute, pared down, witty, and satisfyingly accurate--and many acute appreciations of what goes on at a day at the beach--from calm to crashing waves, a woman struggling to change her clothes under a towel, to the small marine creatures to be seen, this book is a joy and old-fashioned in the sense that the excellence of its watercolor and pencil drawings may be studied repeatedly and pored over by sophisticated adult and thoughtful child alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful and evocative
I think my favorite thing about this book is the way it evokes, rather than dictates, a mood.It does this through its spare prose, sure.(The author is a very precise writer).More, though, it conveys mood through the watercolors. Some are complex, some are simple. Some are enormous (even bigger, it seems, than the pages of this already big book).Neither the pictures nor the prose push me around, they just let me be--soaking in the colors, the forms, the mood.Cooper really does have a great sense of color, by the way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Summerland falls short of exceptional...
Perhaps part of my opinion might come from the fact that I had to read this for school, but overall I found Summerland an okay book. The basis of its plot is not bad at all - a boy lacking confidence, self-esteem, and motivation. It was definitely a storyline that could use some great development. However, the way Michael Chabon put the entire book together was awkward for me.
4-0 out of 5 stars How in the world can this be packaged as Mainstream?
An awkward boy forced to play baseball on a team where he's regarded as the weakest link discovers a path to a faerie world. Of course, there's a crisis and he's the champion and the commonality between all the worlds is baseball - - something he's determined to do poorly. His father is captured by demons and forced to create a substance which will poison the tree whose branches allow travel between the worlds, pixies are raided by were-creatures, and giants are tricked into a game where the stakes are human flesh.
5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to the unabridged audio
I highly recommend the audio book format, read by the author.Chabon's voicing of the dialogue provides further texture to the story that would be absent in print alone.
