5-0 out of 5 stars What a great ride.....
This book was one of the most entertaining I have picked up an a long while. From the beginning, I was drawn into the story of the young man, who in my opinion, had an old soul. His constant struggles and his continual attempts to overcome them had me feeling what he was feeling.I was so angry at one point in the book, I wanted to rewrite what was happening. It is not often that I am so drawn into a book written for chidren. This is a wonderful text that I plan on integrating into 4th and 5th grade classrooms, as I feel that students, especially young males, can identify with the struggles the young man went through.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves to be drawn into a fantastic adventure story adn who likes to see good conquer all.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Young Man and the Sea
After reading this book almost a year ago (and rating it a 4 star book), then discussing it in my classes and letting it ferment a while in my noggin, I am moving my rating to 5 stars. This book resonates.
5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT! 5 STARS!
I definitely loved this book and who wouldn't? I read it and was hooked! After the part where he's getting the fish, I glued my eyes to the pages. The book was so fantastic the I recommended it to my best friend. She loved it too. This is, of course, me favorite book of all time! Rodman Philbrick is awesome!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best shortstop in New York history
I am a huge fan of Derek Jeter's. That's why I chose this book. I gave it five stars because Matt Christopher described every part of Derek's life accurately. I had already read Derek's autobiography and in that book I learned that his Dad made him sign contracts. In these contracts with his father, Derek had to promise to get good grades -- or else he didn't get to play in any All Star games or anything. Later, dude!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read at the Plate with Derek Jeter
The book I'm reviewing is At the Plate with Derek Jeter by Matt Christopher. I think this book deserves five stars. This book is a Derek Jeter biography. A problem that occurs in this story is when he's in high school. He almost gets cut from the team. This tells you how Derek Jeter became a pro baseball player. I would recommend this book to anybody.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to read with a young baseball fan
This series in general, and the Jeter book in particular, are great for a 5-10 year old sports nut.I read this with our 6 year old, a chapter a night for a couple weeks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ball Don't Lie
I liked his book because it was about basketball and I have played basketball for the last nine years. I felt like I understood the book because I know a lot about basketball. It also told of a story about a boy growing up in the foster carte system.
4-0 out of 5 stars Ball Don't Lie
I loved the book. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened to the main character, "Sticky." It's not the kind of book you have to use a dictionary all the time. It's written in plain simple language.
5-0 out of 5 stars West Coast Baller Shows Heart
I'm not usually a big book guy, but I knew I had to read my boy "Cali's" first book. We play ball together at the Prospect YMCA. So I went and bought a copy to show my support. Then I didn;t read it for about six months. Well I just finished it last night. I couldn't believe how good it was. This dude can really write. And I love the story. It's sad, but in the end you feel like the main character is going to be alright. Speaking of the main character. He's from the west coast which usually means he'd be soft, but this kid has got some heart. so get get a copy of this book and support my boy Cali. You'll be happy you did. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Follow-Up!
Millicent Min has become one of my favorite kid books (I've recommended it MANY times), and this is a very fine follow-up. It's a completely different voice (which is an impressive thing!), but it's got the humor and heart of the first book too.
4-0 out of 5 stars Stanford's Story!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stanford Wong Gets an A
This is a really fun, fast-paced, moving novel about Stanford Wong's summer. Instead of going to basketball camp like he had planned, his parents make him attend summer school. By the end of the book, Stanford opens up his mind and heart to different types of friends, the joy of reading, and a strong belief in himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preschool class loves this book
I checked this book out of our local library when I was teaching a unit on "oceans" to my preschool class. The children listened closely as the suspense built in this story and the surprise ending was wonderful. The children understood the food chain concept and have asked me several times to "Read it again!" It has also triggered a renewed interest in the children for using their own imaginations to create stories of their own creation. I am ordering a copy for our own personal library. This one is a keeper!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Elementary Teacher
This is a great book to use to introduce children to the concept of food chains and food webs...And the pictures are gorgeous!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Beautiful Book!
I bought this book for my six year old son.He and his brother have always loved Jerry Pallotta's alphabet books, so I thought we'd give this book atry! Boy, are we glad that I did! The illustrations are beautiful, and asalways Mr. Pallotta gives children information in a way that they canunderstand - but without talking down to them. My son really loved thetwist at the end of the story. He was relieved that Danny wasn't out thereinthe ocean all by himself! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood dream
As a little girl growing up, I lived my life through the pages of this book and wished that I was as lucky as young Vivi Malloy.I would check this book out of the library as much as I could because it was the closest that I got to owning a horse (until my dream came true when I was 13).Despite being out of print, I was so happy when I found a copy of this book on eBay.For those who are still searching for this book, have no worry because it is finally back in print with an update on Vivi, Penny, and a few other people that are mentioned.George Morris lends a hand by writing a foreword to the newest edition. One statement he makes is so true when it comes to today's horse owners:"We also see Vivi grooming and exercising her pony Ready Penny, mucking out Penny's stall, and observing and learning from the pony's veterinarian and farrier.Such hands-on participation was all part of a rider's life in those days (but unfortunately less so today), and this bookreminds us that it takes more than winning blue ribbons to become a complete horseman or horsewoman."

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreaming of Horses
Never owned a horse, but got very intersted in horses in my early 20's and read TONS of books.'A Very Young Rider' was one of my favorites.I own the book and several of the other 'very young' ones.Am amazed these books are out of print! :(Got curious reading these reviews about what happend to Vivi and did an internet search. Here is a wonderful story:
5-0 out of 5 stars A Piece of my Childhood...
I am 38 years old and got this book for Christmas at about 10 years old. I, too, had a pony that I showed and loved dearly. I even started to wear my long, blonde hair in braids with lucky polkadot ribbons when I showed English. I ran home from school every day, waiting to get close enough to hear her whinny for me...I cried along with Vivi as I outgrew my precious pony, Boots, and moved on to a bigger horse. It still brings bittersweet tears to my eyes when I thumb through it! My dust cover is torn and worn and I was looking for a replacement book when I came upon this thread. This book, and all in the series, were wonderful stories of real-life people with real stories and experiences. With so much garbage thrown at our kids these days, it would be a shame to see this series disappear. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2 year old's favorite!
This is amongst my 2 year old son's favorite books, many of which are Spot books. He can recite the entire thing. It's a cute story about Spot meeting his friends, playing with them, losing his ball in the park, and encountering a new friend who is able to retrieve the ball. We love it! Five Stars!

3-0 out of 5 stars Spot Goes to the Park
The Book is about Spot the dog. In the book he goes to the park and meets some of his friends there. Spot and his friends play with a ball, and while playing with the ball it hits someone, and it also goes into the water. The ball got them into a little trouble, but they now need to get the ball out of the water.3-0 out of 5 stars not much park vocabulary

4-0 out of 5 stars Night Golf
A young boy wants to play golf but can't because he is black. The author tastefully takes us back to a time when segretation was a relevant part of life. The story follows a young boy's dream of playing golf after discovering a rusty club and basket of balls in a garbage can.He practices and decides he wants to play at a real golf course. When he gets to the course he sees that he can't play, but he can caddy. While caddying he meets George, another caddy.George teaches him how to play golf in the dark. The author does an excellent job of displaying the young boy's drive and determination. The illustrator also displays beautiful illustrations that highlight the author's text. The author has told such a rich story, there is no doubt it will lead to wonderful and insightful discussions among children. This book would be a delight to read aloud to all children.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Realities of the Sport
It's very refreshing to read about a golfer, especially a young African-American, who is not on the grand scale of the top-ranked players. This story illustrates beautifully how this wonderful game can beaccessible to anyone who cares to play. The illustrations are very welldone. The story seems a bit long for the age category, however.

5-0 out of 5 stars A young man breaking barriers on his path to success.
I really enjoyed this story about the secret world of Night Golf.It is touching to hear about such an important social issue through the story of one young man. People don't think about how change is achieved in Americansociety. This story makes you think about the world of African-Americangolfers, the barriers they faced to play a simple game, and their eventualacceptance into the world of golf excellence. ... I read this book based on a student recommendation. What a welcome surprise. This author deserves much more recognition for her talent.I look at and read Young Adult books all the time, but I knew nothing of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved this book so much! I dont see how anyone couldn't. i read it for fun and it turned out to teach me a lot about love and about law. I can understand things more clearly by relating experiences to experiences of the characters. their lives are magnificently changing and understandable. i would reccomend this book to people who love teen murder mysteries and amazing pieces of writing that touch your heart. this book made me feel, it made me cry, it made me laugh. this book is about life and understanding the situation. the characters' struggles are real and exciting. this book is amazing.

4-0 out of 5 stars The changing of friends
This is a fast pace mystery. This book starts off really slow but as you get into it ,it becomes the most exciting book you have ever read.
