5-0 out of 5 stars Great for adults too that think fishing is yucky!
This book talks about the fact that fish have no pain and it explains why.I always wondered about that, but you don't want to appear too dumb and ask. This book is great explaining hooks and types of hooks. How to clean the fish and it also tells you how to make lures.A cute book for any beginner. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Golf's never been so interesting
Boy or girl, young or old, readers will love reading about Tiger Woods' inspiring rise to the top of the golf world. Overcoming racism, economic hardship, and personal limitations, Tiger leads the pack at an incredibly young age. My 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter and I read this together, and we were all equally enthralled and inspired by Tiger's story. It was accessible without being overly simple. We're looking forward to reading more entries in Matt Christopher's biography series.

5-0 out of 5 stars By My Brother's Side
By My Brother's Side is about two boys that love sports but their favorite is football.Their names are Ronde and Tiki Barber.WHen Tiki was little he fell down a dirt hill on his bike and cut his knee open and the doctor said he may never be able to play sports again. Now Tiki Barberis on the New York Giants (number 21) and his brother Ronde Barber is on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (number 20).They now are professional football players.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Character-Building Book
Children who have followed the careers of football greats Tiki and Ronde Barber may not know that one of the twins was almost sidelined permanently from playing while still a boy. That story is told in By My Brother's Side.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Tony Hawk: Professional SkateBoarder"
I injoyed this book alot because it has influenced my life. The book has influenced my life by not judging people for the things they do.Another aspect is that he has showen is Intellectual Perserverance in his every day life. He has done this by not giving up on his Skateboarding company when times were rough. He has reminded me of my own family and how we all have overcome hard times and how we still keep positive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Same as other book
I felt like this book was pretty much the same as Occupation Skateboarder. Lots of the same pics and stories, but okay.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Tony Hawk : Professional Skateboarder" A Skater's Point of View
Tony Hawk: Professional Skateboarder was a great autobiography. Tony Hawk is the main person. He talks about his life from when he was a baby through his adult hood with ups and downs of his skateboarding career.

5-0 out of 5 stars E is for Educational
This is a great book for younger children - jam packed with soccer facts and information about the history of the game. While some of the words may be difficult for elementary-aged kids, it will certainly "kick start" their desire to learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars An alphabet book for fans of soccer, both young and old
I have to think the idea reader for "K is for Kick: A Soccer Alphabet" is going to be the parent who is having trouble waiting for their kid to be old enough to go out on the soccer field and kick the ball around, let along trying to help the kid learn to read.Author Brad Herzog admittedly creates a two-tier format that has one part targeted on young readers learning the alphabet and the other for more advanced readers who are clearly soccer fans. But I have to think that if a kid is learning his alphabet than the idea that "C is for clubs everywhere" and gives examples of Italy's A.C. Milan and Santos in Brazil, that they probably have little idea as to where to find Italy and Brazil on the map. There are references to age appropriate aspects of the game, such as kicking and youth soccer, but then "N" stands for not only the University of North Carolina's dynasty in women's soccer but number 19, the number that UNC retired in honor of Mia Hamm.Read more

Editorial Review

One fine morning Mr. Gumpy decides it's a perfect day for an outing inhis little boat. Apparently, plenty of others think so, too. First some children ask to join him, then a rabbit, a cat, a dog, a pig, a sheep... Soon,Mr. Gumpy's boat is precariously full, and there's nowhere for anyone else to go--but overboard! This mild mariner takes everything in stride, though, and his guests are soon bellying up to a nice tea.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite
Truly a classic, this one is a joy to read and kids just love it. The accumulative tale combined with glowing illustrations elicits preschool giggles every time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pip pip!
This book falls firmly into a very specific genre of picture book literature. The old, if-one-more-person-gets-into-this-boat/mitten/car/etc.-bad-things-will-happen genre.Jan Brett's "The Mitten" does it.The more recent "One Dog Canoe" does it.But one of the first stories to have done it (and have a moral to boot) is the 1970 story "Mr. Gumpy's Outing".5-0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite is "everything."
This is a thoroughly delightful book. The simple story engages small children, and the illustrations are first-rate.I have read this book countless times to my two pre-schoolers, and have enjoyed the experience very much. This book is an excellent way to get children interested in books. Finally, I recommend the hardback over the paperback because of the higher quality of the illustrations in the hardback. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great book - lousy binding
My son loves this book, but after about 4 readings it started to fall apart and about 5 pages are now floating around somewhere in my house.Great book, just get the hardcover copy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book falls apart
This is my grandson's favorite Froggy story. However, the quality of the paper back book is abysmal. Both copies fell apart within 24 hours, with the middle pages detaching almost at once. Children's books must be durable and these are not. Don't waste your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best basketball book
This excellent and appealing story deals with cultural differences, moving, and basketball. An eight grader,Lincoln mendoza and his mother have just moved from barriot to sycamore, due to a robberie.Lincoln misses his old neighborhood and old dirty freinds. He also misses the fights that would occur in barriot. The reason i gave this book four stars was becuase it had good parts. My favorite part in this book was the part when he played against the other team because it was all his freinds. The arthur desribed this book so great. At his new school he is playing on there basketball team which happens to play against his old school franklin he is very nervous and why does his coach dislike him?????

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book by Chris Crutcher
This book Running Loose by Chris Crutcher was a very good book.It took a short while to get into it but once you did it was hard to put down.In the book, a kid named Louie Banks has everything going his way so far in his life.Chris does a great job of bringing Louie to life in this book.Louie is a senior attending Trout High School in Trout, Idaho. He has a beautiful girlfriend that no one expected him to have; even himself, and a great spot on the eight-man football team.During one of the games, Louie explodes because one of his teammates, Boomer Cowans, purposely hits a kid and puts him out of the game.He has to put up with Boomer, the big bully of the school, constantly after that.Louie gets into a big fight with the coach and gets kicked off of the team.Carter Sampson, the quarterback of the team and Louie's best friend, helps him through his problems.Things start to go downhill from there.Louie has other big problems to face but you will have to find out for yourself what they are.I really liked the fact that this was a very realistic book and could happen to anybody in high school.Louie goes through problems that anybody could face in the real world today.I really enjoyed this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Running Loose
Louie quits the football team and has to deal with it.Louie a senior in High School has it made.Until, everything goes bad.He quits the football team because of foul play. The coach of the football team wants the players to hurt the opposing team's best player (a black player).Louie one of the best players has some good friends and some bad friends.Becky his girlfriend is killed in a car wreck.Louie makes a real big deal about this.He even stands up at her funeral to say his opinions. He even goes further when he takes the plaque for her and throws it into the river.Louie must try to live on after everything he had is gone.He must survive his senior year with only one friend and many others making fun of him.See how Louie runs into conclusions at the end of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Running Loose
Louie Bank's life is great, but all that changes with a blink of an eye.Louie has great friends, a fabulous girlfriend and football. He has some bad things though like a messed up football coach and a bully that wants to beat him up.Louie has been training hard all off season of football. He just wants a starting position. He trains with his best friend Carter.Carter is a big, strong, and smart guy.Louie makes a starting position on the eight man football team with Carter at quarter back. There is one more guy for mention Boomer Cowans. He is the starting running back.Boomer is big and strong, but as dumb as a log.Louie has the most popular girlfriend in the whole school. Her name is Becky Sanders. She means the world to Louie. Then something happens that will turn his life around. Will Louie ever survive what happened?

5-0 out of 5 stars Captures the Interest of Every Age
Bright colorful pictures and down home language make this picture book a favorite with both younger and older children.Based on a true story, this book has a lesson to teach - persevere with those who are unkind.Stick with your goals.Continue to be kind despite opposition. This picture book is pulled out again and again in our home.

5-0 out of 5 stars John Vonhof (a runner at heart)
The Pumpkin Runner is a great book for parents to read to their children, especially those parents who are runners. Few are the books that spin a tale about the sports we love. Children need to be exposed to the challenges and rewards of participating in sports. Taken from a true story of ultramarathoner Cliff Young, The Pumpkin Runner has fantastic colors in vivid artwork to hold a child's attention. Adults will smile as Joshua runs the race of his life in a carefree way that shows children of all ages that sometimes we just need to have fun--and the rewards will come.

4-0 out of 5 stars What spinach was to Popeye, pumpkins are to Joshua...
This story has my six year old pretending to eat slices of pumpkin before he zooms off into the distance! It is a compelling tale of an old bloke who beats the odds by just doing what works for him. What I like best about this story, besides it being based on reality, is that it makes folks think about what elders can do, or indeed what people can accomplish, just by being utterly themselves. It's an updated 'tortoise and the hare' fable, really. Incidentally, I found the laconic, modest character of Joshua to be distinctly Australian, having lived there for four years. It's great! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner youth coaches book
I purchased about 5 books on coaching soccer, particularly youth soccer (13 and under). This was by far the best of the lot, most covered only rules and strategy and not teaching basic skills. This is the first coaches book I found that actually explained how to kick a ball!It does a great job in explaining how to teach the basic skills, which is what most of the young players need. The drills were helpful and made a definite improvement in the play of the team.

4-0 out of 5 stars great coaching skills for beginner coaches
goes in detail of coaching young kids [fantastic

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent book for beginners and intermediates
This is an okay book for beginner and intermediate level youth soccer coaching. There are two main problems with this book. One is that the illustrations are extremely crude, often reduced to literally stick figures. The other problem is that, having collected several other youth soccer coaching books and videos, I'm not sure that I actually learned anything new from this book, and so in retrospect, I don't think I would have gotten this book. For beginner coaches learning how to coach very young kids (i.e., ages 4-8), Karl Dewazien's "FUNdamental Soccer" is a better book in terms of the illustrations, and in its emphasis on how to handle these very young children. For a more detailed explanation of tactics and intermediate to advanced skills for older children (ages 8+), Alan Hargreaves' book "Skills and Strategies for Coaching Soccer" treats essentially the same topics in a much more thorough fashion. For teaching soccer dribbling "moves", Wiel Coerver's "SCORE!" is the ultimate book (although, as I noted in my review of that book, the companion videos, viewed in slow motion, are more useful). However, if you haven't gotten any soccer coaching books yet, and are looking for your first ever youth soccer coaching book for slightly older kids (ages 8+), this book might be useful. It does have a cookbook set of week-by-week soccer drills that will get you through your first soccer season, if you don't want to have to think too hard about what it is that you're going to have to do. ... Editorial Review

Junie B. Jones's kindergarten teacher has some strange ideas about fieldday: "Field Day is a day to run around in the fresh air and enjoy the sunshine. We came out here to have fun and get some exercise. And we're not going to careone little bit about who wins or who loses." Only what's so fun about losing? That's what Junie B. wants to know. In the great contest between room 8 and room9, somehow, room 8 keeps winning all the events. As Captain Field Day of room 9,Junie B. is feeling her superpowers--and her good sportsmanship--slipping away. Can Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Five young, orphaned monks specializes in a different style of kung-fu reflecting his personality
Book 2 of Jeff Stone's 'Five Ancestors' series, Monkey really deserves a reading of Book 1 for a smooth transition - and be aware, this is a projected seven-book series - but the action- packed martial-arts story set in 17th century China will win fans wherever they begin. Five young, orphaned monks specializes in a different style of kung-fu reflecting his personality: here Malao faces his temple's destruction and an encounter with a band of wood monkeys who save him and introduce him to a wilder side of his soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars Monkey ( 5 Ancestors)
I think the book was better than hope for. You need to read the frist book first than you will get the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Monkey
The Five Ancestors series by Jeff Stone is an exciting series about five young monks from an ancient Chinese temple called Canghzen, or, literally, Hidden Temple. The books are the same story, but from different views, because they split up. I think these books are a great adventure, and I also liked Tiger. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
I bought this book for my 3 kids, ages 7, 5 and 3, and we really enjoyed it. I heard about the author in my Literature Course, and wanted to read a book from her. I loved the drawings and the rhyming, which made a perfect book for a group reading. My kids enjoyed it too, specially with all those animals in the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a wonderful book. It is very unique, featuring animals of the Northwoods such as moose and bear. It is a joy to read with an memorable cadence. Your child will enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to wind down with on a summer night
This is a wonderful book with FABULOUS nighttime illustrations. It is recommended for 4-8, but my 22-month old loves it and loves to count along with it. She asks for it again and again and even recites bits of it! It is about 2 children catching fireflies, and you also see a host of nocturnal animals as they appear as the dusk fades to dark.At the end the children release them and count them as they fly away. Very simple poetry, but read slow (!) or you will easily become tongue tied.4-0 out of 5 stars Great Summer Time Book
In this book two children catch flashing fireflies in the night. This is a counting book from one to ten. After they catch all ten, they marvel attheir beauty. Then, the best part of the book is that the children let thefireflies go.The watch them leave by counting backwards from ten to one,and then none. This is a captivating book that teaches not only counting, but kindness to animals. It is a great bedtime story book, just watch outfor the tongue twisters! ... Read more
