5-0 out of 5 stars A homeschoolers review
This is a true and exciting story that will make you never want to give up on your dreams.I really liked this book and recommend that you read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classroom Book
I have used Wilman Unlimited in my classroom for the past few years. It is a fantastic book to use any time during the year, but good for Black History Month also.I use it with fourth graders to teach sequencing and analyzing character.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Running just as fast as she can
Inspirational stories fill hundreds of picture books every year. Most are simply awful. They either tell tales that are loose plots barely supported by facts or they paste together a slapdash concoction of truth and fiction with as little thought as possible. The truly beautiful bio-picture books out there are as rare as hummingbirds in autumn. So it was with great joy that I located "Wilma Unlimited" and found it to be not only inspirational but also a darned good read. Written by Kathleen Krull (the woman who could make long dead musicians fascinating in "Lives of the Musicians" and bring Cesar Chavez to life in the recent "Harvesting Hope") and illustrated by David Diaz the book is the best possible way to introduce kids to one of the world's greatest athletes.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nazi Olymics
The book I read on the Holocaust was called The Nazi Olympics: Berlin 1936 by Susan D. Bachrach. This book is about the Olympics held by the Nazis. In this book, it tells about the steps Nazis took to hold the Olympics. It also tells you where exactly the Olympics were held. This book is not a book that actually tells a story, it is a factual book that tells facts and gives you images to describe the facts.Adolf Hitler was head of Germany's Government. In 1931, Berlin was chosen as the site of the 1936 Summer Games. After World War I, Hitler and the Nazi promised a "new Germany" that would give to those many Germans who were fearful to the future.Soon Germany was turned into a police state for "Aryans only".As the year of 1936 came closer and closer with the Olympics, people questioned whether the Olympics should be held in a country whose ideology ran counter to the ideals that inspired to the Games. Many participants questioned the same thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful!
This large and attractive book tells the story of the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin. Many Americans have heard of them, though their knowledge is limited to the fact that Jesse Owens, an African-American, won four gold medals, humiliating Adolf Hitler. This book tells the story of those Olympics from the choice of venue in 1931, through the rise of Hitler and National Socialism, the Nazi racial policies, the movement to boycott the games, the Olympics themselves, and finally on to the aftermath of the games and the Holocaust. Following the texts are some wonderful appendices on the chronology of the games, statistics on the 1896-1936 Olympics, and a list of nations participating in the 1936 Olympics. But don't stop there! After the index is collection of in-color reproductions of posters and artwork connected with the 1936 Olympics.
5-0 out of 5 stars High quality writing, graphics and layout
The most striking feature about The Nazi Olypmics is the layout. Photos from the Library of Congress, National Holocaust museum, and a variety of personal and corporate collections are nicely arranged. The illustrations emphasize that Nazi propaganda convinced participating countries that the 1936 Olympic Games were going to adhere to the Olympic code and be inclusive of all peoples and faiths.Magazine covers, newspaper headlines, political cartoons, and pictures of segregated Nazi and Jewish sports clubs reinforce the point that Nazi ideology was (and still is) directly opposite the Olympic code, in spite of Hilter's assurances to the contrary. 3-0 out of 5 stars g-daddy's review
i thought it was a pretty good book because i like football. but but i think there should of been some more action and a little bit longer.i like the fact that boots didnt get to play quarterback and instead he had to play linemen and he ended up likeing the position. but i didnt like it that just because he wasnt quarterback he was gonna quit and if your gonna play a sport and you dont get your position then just dont quit cuz you could be better at that position.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tough to Tackle by Matt Christopher
The main characters of this book are Boots Raymond,Coach Higgins, Coach Dekay, and Tony Alo. Boots is a big kid,14 years old, and loves to play football.Coach Higgins and Coach Dekay are tough coaches who really expect alot from the players.Tony is a thin, wiry boy who loves to aggravate Boots.
5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal book
Boots Raymond is a boy that want to play quarterback for his team - there's just one problem - the coach says he's too heavy to play that position. The coach assigns him to right tackle. His brother, Tom, is actually the one that encourages him to play football because he wants to quit. His brother explains that it's good to play the line because you help the quarterback make the plays.I like this book because it's very exciting, and I understand how it feels to play a position that you don't like.I would recommend this book to anyone who loves sports or who plays tackle football! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT READING AND PICTURES
I enjoyed reading this book.It was easy to read and interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining look at the sport as well as an honest bio
Fans of Ms. Cohen's career will not be disappointed at her frank autobiography and a career still very much in progress. A favorite for the gold medal in Torino, Sasha spoke openly about the pressures and gained my respect when she maintained her dignity despite cutting observances and outright rudeness from the international press. Despite two falls in her long program and her own inner belief that all chance of any medal at all was gone, she got up off the ice and gave the program her all. Her perseverance rewarded her with a silver medal and inspired a generation of skaters to never give up. Great book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.
From beginning to end, I found this book to be dreadful, and an utter waste of my time. Champion? Of what? She is the queen of making excuses, and really, isn't it too soon for an autobiography? Do yourself a favor, skip over this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Do as I say, not as I do
This book is a humorous account of the Bears on vacation. When the Bears arrive at their vacation house, Papa Bear points out all of the dangers and things to avoid. But he promptly ignores his own advice, with fearful consequences. The book has some tension, but it's not too scary. Some children may pick up on the message that when a parent advises against doing something, there is usually a good reason and that those who ignore the advice may get hurt. The text is presented in rhyme, and there are about 550 words.

3-0 out of 5 stars I feel so sorry for Papa Bear
Poor, poor Papa Bear... In THE BEARS' VACATION, by Stan and Jan Berenstain, Small Bear gets taught a few simple rules for when you're at the beach. And although this seems harmless, for every rule Papa Bear recites, something happens to him. For instance,Rule number six is to keep a sharp lookout whil you are out on a boat. Easy enough, right? Well, as Papa Bear 'keeps a look out' for Small Bear, a huge ocean liner comes up from the opposite direction than the way Papa Bear looks. All in all, I found this a fairly humoring story. I gave it a 3 out of 5.

4-0 out of 5 stars tree bears in a vacation
I give four stars to this book because it is very fun.I choose this book to tell you how good this book is.The most thing that i like is when the bears'family were going to a vacation. And I liked it when the dad of the little Bear was showing the little bear all the rules of the beach.I think other students would like to read this book and review this book it is very good and very fun I recommend you to read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's a hit!
Due to Alan Gratz's magnificent SAMURAI SHORTSTOP, I went to sleep long after my bedtime. I couldn't stop reading! This intriguing book mesmerized me. I lost all sense of time. I was engrossed in turn-of-the-century Japan.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Thought provoking page turner
Books that attract and hold the interest of boys are rare and in high demand. Alan Gratz's book, Samurai Shortstop, will do both. In his first 5 pages of text, the stage is set for this powerful, thought provoking YA novel. With well-chosen words Mr. Gratz promotes understanding of cultural differences in a fascinating, well-researched manner without once digressing from the thrill of his page-turning story.
5-0 out of 5 stars Grand Slam!
What an amazing debut! Toyo's story grabbed me from the first page with his uncle's preparation for ritual suicide. I couldn't wait to get to the end of the book to see if Toyo could successfully apply bushido principles to baseball, to see if he and his father could bridge just a little of the gap between them, if he could ever forgive his uncle for leaving him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sure to Be a Classic
This is simply a terrific book.Superb plot, colorful characters, beautifully written. It deserves to become a classic the likes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland. My nine-year-old son couldn't put it down and suggested I read it as well.I did and I loved it.In fact, as soon as school starts I will be sharing it with my 2nd grade class. To a casual reader, it is a highly entertaining pageturner. To a teacher, it is more than a great read.It is rich with examples of fiction writing the way it should be.Hurray for Mr. Haven ... and a plea -- please write more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Over The Wall Book Review
Hi my name is Max Mordini and I just got done reading Over the wall. One thing I have to say is that John H. Ritter is the bestauthor ever. I read The Boy Who Saved Baseball about 2 months ago and I loved that one so much that I went off and bought Over The Wall. Over The Wall is even better than the boy who saved baseball i just could not stop reading this book. Now I will tell you a brief summary of the book. It all starts off in California were a boy named Tyler Waltern lives. This summer Tyler is going to take a plane up to New York City and spend it there with his cousins and play baseball with Louie (his cousin). He arrives in New York and greets his cousins. Soon enough it was the day of there first baseball game. Tyler plays shortstop and is very good. The game is all tied up and Tyler is on second and he is the winning run. His teammate hit a clean single and Tyler thought he had a chance to be the hero and break for home so he did. He rounded third and was on his way home. He took a huge head first slide into home and he touched the plate just barely with his hand and was in front of the through. After he touched home he was tagged by the catcher Tyler was jumping and cheeringIve won the game he thought to himself but then he heard the umpire yell your out he never touched home. Tyler was astonished and he put up an argument right away. Eventually he was thrown out of the game and they lost. Then the same exact thing happened again in there 3rd game and out of anger tyler yelled I quit. He couldn't believe what he just said but he couldnt take it back now. After this Tyler is miserable and doesn't know what to do but he had to play so he went back to the ball fields and found the commissioner of the baseball league. He begged to be letback in. He said "Only if I can see that your behavior and sportsmanship have changed" and tyler was let back in the league. Believe it or not baseball is only one half of the book. Now I will tell you about the other half of the book (Vietnam War). Tyler's grandpa fought in the Vietnam war as a pilot and was shot down and killed. This is another reason that tyler went to New York, so he could see the wall with his grandpas name on it in Washington D.C. Before he went to see the wall he read a couple booksabout vietnam. After reading and looking at the books it made tyler think a little and it made him feel bad about the vietnamese people who died that weren't even in the war like little kids and grandparents. it also made him sad thinking about that there were 3 million people who died on the other side and there was no wall mentioning any of them so Tyler decides to make a monument for the vietmanese. This is my summary of the book and I hope you will read it. I would recommend this book to boys because you have to be a boy to understand and feel like your in the book ( this is why i loved it so much.) I would recomend the book to ages 10 through 14. It would be a good book for older kids to read during the summer for fun. Anyway This book was a great book and you should read it whenever you get the chance. Also this book was the first book I ever laughed at or got butterflies in my stomach when I was reading. The book is AWESOME!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Henry & Mudge book.
The winsome, colorful illustrations in the Henry and Mudge books are delightful. I used to read the series when I was in elementary school. This one, for whatever reason, has remained my favorite and is actually the only one I owned personally. Any fellow dog-loving children should enjoy learning to read and explore with Henry and Mudge, as well as other book series like 'Nate the Great,' a detective. Recommended.

I picked this book out at our local library for my two year old daughter because she loves dogs and the beach. It turned out to be such a big hit that I am buying it!She of course can't read, but enjoyed the story andpictures very much. She loves Mudges playfullness and had just been to thebeach recently so she could relate to Henry and his father playing in thewater. The length of the story is just right also for her. It's awonderful book and we are buying two more from the series besides this one! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Mirette and the "Great Bellini" traverse the Paris skyline on high wire in the climactic scene of this picture book about conquering fear. The two meet at Mirette's mother's boarding house, where Bellini is staying with a troupe of traveling performers. Mirette persuades Bellini to teach her his art, and soon enough the two are performing above the rooftops of Paris. While Mirette gets to step outside her daily routine of peeling potatoes and scrubbing floors, Bellini manages to reaffirm his mastery. The story affords a spunky, down-to-earth role model for readers who like to dream big dreams. It also offers rich, scenic portraits of 19th century Paris. The book won the 1993 Caldecott Medal. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mirette on the High Wire
I enjoyed reading this children's novel very much.I liked the unique subject and the author's creative and innovative ideas. The author did an extremely good job illustrating some of the difficulties with walking on a high wire.In addition, the novel had an important morale, never give up.A must read for everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Many valuable lessons for children
Confidence in yourself is everything when your occupation is a dangerous one. Generally, once you lose it, getting it back is impossible. In this book, a retired tightrope walker named Bellini has lost his courage and is staying at a boarding house. Mirette is a young girl who works at the boarding house and she watches him walk on a rope that is only a few feet off the ground. She begs him to teach her how to walk the tightrope, but Bellini refuses. Not to be denied, she learns on her own and so he agrees to teach her. They become friends and she learns of his incredible feats. When she asks him why he retired, he tells her of his lost courage. Bellini is eventually persuaded to walk again but his courage fails after he begins. Mirette then comes to his aid, showing him that he can still perform as the Great Bellini.

This book is about how a young girls caretaker owns a hotel and a famous tightroper comes there to stay for a while. The young girl asked him if he could teach her how to walk on a tight rope. After months of pratice she learned how to walk on the tightrope with her teacher. One day Mirette's town was having a celebration and Mirette and her teacher showed the town what they could do. I kind of like this book because it taught me how to never give up on what you're learning. ... Read more
