4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review: The Million Dollar Strike

1-0 out of 5 stars TRASH
My 9 year old came home from school with this book one day and, man, was I glad that I read through it a little before giving it back to him to read.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Million Dollar Strike
Dan Gutman, the author of The Million Dollar Shot, comes back with a new book called The Million Dollar Strike. This book is hilarious. Ouchie, one of the main characters is in a Bowl-A-Rama with Squishy, another character. They have to get through the Bowl-A-Rama together. It was a bowling experience for the both of them.

This book helped me learn to read when i was 3 years old. As long as you know the alphabet you can read this book, which makes it perfect for children who are learning to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the most fun book!
I remembered this book from my elementary school library, and was delighted to find that it had been reprinted. This book is meant to be read out loud and deciphered - our children ages 16 down to 6 were entertained, as were the adults in the house too. This book is just plain fun. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great easy to read football book!!!
I came across an old copy of this book at a thrift shop. After reading this book to my 4 year old son it became a favorite of his.
5-0 out of 5 stars Special
This was one of the first books I ever read by myself, and I frequently used to go look for it in the library to re-read it. One of the more endearing books in my memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for little football fans
Both of our sons love sports. And both have loved this book. It's simple, easy to understand and easy to enjoy. I, and my boys, like it because the stars are the animals, and the little boys that play football. The picturesare simple and descriptive enough to convey the message and the story movesalong quickly enough to keep short attention spans occupied. We've readKick pass and Run hundreds of times in the last 4 years, and now that weown a copy of it ourselves, we'll probably read it twice as often. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I want a red canoe!
In first grade my daughter's school had a "Blue Book Bag" program: each week the students brought home a different book and a journal in a blue book bag. This was my favorite book of the year (I am a kindergarten teacher and was an English major, if that holds any weight). There is something charming and dreamy about Three Days on a River in a Red Canoe, which is a child's journal of a canoe trip.It was so easy to slip into the joyous adventure of the journey--feeling the heat of the afternoon, the beauty of the jumping fish, the quiet damp of the mist. The relationships between the adults and children implied a long history of love and confidence in each other. In addition, the book has text in unexpected places, so it is visually fun. There are a couple of recipes as part of the narrative and directions on how to tie a Two-Half Hitch knot, so you if you and your children really love the book, you can extend the experience. In the Accelerated Reader program, this book is third grade level, but my preschool daughter also liked it very much, so it can appeal to a wide range of ages (maybe 4-9?)Mother's Day is this Sunday, and I have told my girls that for Mother's Day I want a red canoe--or at least a hardback copy of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for primary age kids while studying rivers.
We used this book as a spring board for an environmental unit. We planned mapping, canoe safety, first aide safety, camping and landforms. We also planned a field trip to a local park with a creek and set up stations thatinvolved the different aspects of the book. We used newspaper ads and hadthe children decide what would be needed for a canoe trip and tied it inwith math, teaching money. This was a great book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Sixteen Years in Sixteen Seconds documents the story of Sammy Lee. Lee was the first Asian American to win Olympic gold. This truly inspiring tale captures the American dream as a young person who overcame discrimination to bring Olympic recognition for a country that rejected him. Lee is the son of Korean immigrants who faced challenges just because of his skin color. Unable to practice in a whites only pool, Lee perfected his abilities in spite of discrimination. Yoo acknowleges the moment in an Olymipan's experience in which life-long training culminates in just a brief sliver of time. Paula Yoo really connects the reader to the subject. Dom Lee's sepia toned illustrations carry a nostalgic feel. This is a strong work and should be a good addition to the library collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sammy Lee:American Hero
Sammy Lee, the son of Korean immigrants, had many firsts. He was the first nonwhite student body president of his high school, the first Asian American to win an Olympic medal, and the first male diver to win consecutive gold medals. He also studied to become a medical doctor in the Army during WWII and served in the Korean War. Sammy over came many prejudices. As a youth, he was only allowed to use the public pool one day a week, when it was open to people of color. Dom Lee's realistic illustrations look like old photographs. Karen Woodworth Roman, East Asian Children's Books

5-0 out of 5 stars Nominated for TX Bluebonnet Award 2006-07
"Both text and sepia-toned illustrations capture the time period and struggles of Sammy Lee, the first Asian American to win an Olympic gold medal in 1948. This biography relates how one man overcame formidable odds in following his dream without disrespecting his father."(summary by Texas Library Association)

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book ever
I enjoyed this book because the Author did a great job in writing it. It was hard for me to put the book down. I would recommend it to anyone who likes dirt bikes such as I do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dirt Bike Racer Review by Ashton Bradford
Skill and luck, at least that's what Ron thinks.Dirt Bike Racer is about a kid named Ron who finds a mini bike at the bottom of a lake while scuba diving. He wants to replace all the parts, but he doesn't have any money. He gets a job working for Mr. Perkins. He finds out Mr. Perkins use to race. Ron finally makes it to a race, but wrecks. I think the theme of this book is sports. The author of this book is Matt Christopher and he always writes about sports. What inspired him to write books, was a piece, someone wrote in high school wrote. It inspired him because he wished he could write like that some day.Matt Christopher has written many books some of them are Peach Street, The Extreme Team, and Soccer Cats. A quote he has gone by is "Good judgment comes from experience, experience comes from bad judgment." I think the quote is good because when you do something bad you learn from it. I recommend this book because it's a good and exciting book. ... Read more

This book is for people that like sports. I recommend this for 4th to 5th graders and ages 9,10. I gave it three stars because it's not all about basketball. It is about kids playing tricks on each other and not enough about sports. It is deceptive from the title and the cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful & Adorable!
This book is pictoral in nature, and follows the progress of a group of young students during a series of gymnastics classes, ending with a competition. The photography is beautiful, and basic gymnastics skills (stretches, splits, cartwheels, etc.) are demonstrated by the students. The book is geared toward young girls, probably around ages 4-8.However, the photography is excellent and the storyline is not too terribly babyish for older fans to enjoy, too. This would be a great addition to a gymnastics library. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Neatly done
I wrote a book about teaching martial arts and run a kid's karate class so I believe that I can speak with authority when I say that Rielly's book is well-rounded, easy to read and very child appropriate. It covers all the basics including a brief history of karate, why students might be interested in studying this martial art, an explanation of the karate uniform, description of the dojo (practice hall), discussion of etiquette, overview of warm up routines, explanation of basic techniques, and description of advancement testing practices. If your child is thinking about taking karate this book can help set his/her expectations and increase his/her chance of success. There is a small caveat about the appropriate use of karate in the front but I wish he'd spent a little more time on that particular aspect. New practitioners, especially younger ones, have a tendency to get into trouble for inappropriately trying out their skills on classmates at school. The sensei (teacher) should cover this but it is always good to know ahead of time. All in all, this book is a great overview for kids.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-read" for children enrolled in a karate course
Knowledgeably written by Robin L. Rielly (an expert martial artist with decades of experience, a seventh-degree black belt in Shotokan karate as well as a second-degree black belt from Shin Kage Ryu jujutsu), Karate For Kids is a simple but complete introduction to the fitness, self-defense, movements, philosophies, and etiquette of karate for young people. Down-to-earth illustrated instructions and guidelines for proper decorum as well as appropriate physical form make Karate For Kids a "must-read" for children enrolled in a karate course -- or who are considering joining a karate class. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Let Baseball Teach The Alphabet!
With this book, you not only stroll through the alphabet, you also learn lots about baseball: history, technique, and players. This is a book that uses alliteration to teach the alphabet, baseball style. I am in awe that someone could pull together an A to Z for baseball. The poetry is good, but not nearly as awesome as the illustrations and the baseball history. There is great longevity for this book. Younger readers will enjoy the alliteration, older readers and parents will enjoythe more detailed descriptions of the game provided in sidebars. Aside from having fun learning the alphabet, you can share America's past time with your kids.
5-0 out of 5 stars The baseball alphabet from A for all-stars to Z for zeroes
Writer Brad Herzog and illustrator Melanie Rose, who brought you "K is for Kick: A Soccer Alphabet," now bring you "H is for Home Run: A Baseball Alphabet." This is not a simple alphabet book, by which I mean that they do more than say "A is for the all-stars." The accompanying text points out that A also stands for Abner Doubleday (who had nothing to do with the invention of baseball), Alexander Cartwright (who did), the All-Star game where the all-stars play, and Hank Aaron. Even more impressive is that in the painting for "A" the player shown signing baseballs for the fans is apparently Amos Otis. That is paying attention to details.
4-0 out of 5 stars A "Hit" For Young Baseball Fans
When I was recently looking for a book for a very young baseball hopeful, I came across H IS FOR HOME RUN. The book is more than an "alphabet book." It not only has an appropriate baseball term or tidbit of baseball for each letter, it also has an informative bit of baseball information. The text is well written and the illustrations are marvelous. It is the perfect book for any young slugger, but I can also see it being helpful for baseball illiterates like me-people who pretends to know something about the sport but are to embarrassed to ask. ... Editorial Review

Most young girls' experiences never involve hunting bearded seals on the ice, even within the Alaskan Eskimo culture. In Scott O'Dell's gripping novel, Bright Dawn is an exception. In her father's eyes, she became his son's replacement ever since her brother drowned. When Bright Dawn is 18 years old, her father, recently injured, insists that she take his place in the Iditarod, the famous Alaskan dogsled race covering more than a thousand miles between Anchorage and Nome. Unflinching, yet trembling in her mukluks, she faces her challenge head-on.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Ramblings of an Egomaniac (Mien Kampf for kids)
I wouldn't waste any amount of money buying this book for a child unless I wanted them to grow up to become a Paris Hilton wannabe, who's probably an idol to the author of ths book. The author is one of the biggest egomaniacs on television today.I'm sure she'll be wasting the airtime of the 'Today' show to promote the pile of garbage to the viewing public as much as she likes to tout her 'Exclusive' interviews she manages to obtain. Why the network insists on keeping her as an anchor is beyond me.Her journalism skills are a joke. She needs to get a job with 'Entertainment Tonight' or 'Extra' because she's all about 'shock value' journalism. Just listening to her speak is like listening to a pack of hyenas or wolverines mate.

3-0 out of 5 stars Play Ball, Amelia Bedelia is the best book.
Play ball, Amelia Bedelia reminded me of when the my team the Yankaes almost got beat but we won. I really liked this book.

Themes: Sometimes the literal meaning of certain phrases is not what they are intended to mean.Even if you get confused, holding a positive attitude and trying hard will pay off in the end.
4-0 out of 5 stars Amelia Bedelia "literally" plays the game of baseball
Not since Abbot asked Costello "Who's on First?" has the national pastime been taken so literally.Taking things literally is precisedly what Amelia Bedelia has been doing ever since she first became a housekeeper.Tell her to "Dust the furniture" and she will dutifully find the Dusting Powder and do as she was told, even though at her house they undust the furniture. In Peggy Parish's "Play Ball, Amelia Bedelia," the Grizzlies baseball team is in trouble when one of their players gets sick and they need a replacement for their big game with the Tornadoes.Who steps up to the plate to save the day up the literal-minded Amelia Bedelia.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book for both your child and you
My son (age 3) and I are absolutely in LOVE w/this book, the illustrations are beautiful and the text is equally lovely, I can't believe there aren't more reviews on this book, maybe it's new? I don't know but if you are considering getting this book I very highly reccomend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Fantastic!!
"Red Rubber Boot Day" is a feast of color and poetry. This was my daughter's favorite book as a 3-year-old, and it is regularly read and enjoyed by us both several years later. The pictures are exuberant, and the text really does make you smell the rain! I have never seen this book in a bookstore so it would make a most delightful and surprising gift for a book lover.
