5-0 out of 5 stars Grandmum does it again
Grandmum was a children's librarian and always finds the great books for my daughter.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely, utterly, charming!
As a children's librarian I often read this book aloud to "my kids" and it was a hit every single time. It's all about cooperation and learning to accept your friends despite all their faults and foibles.I heartily recommend it for one of those chilly fall days--serve soup and crackers as a snack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisitely Crafted!
I agree that this book could become a classic. Its simple storyline will attract the young and its eternal truth--that every age has a purpose--will appeal to people of all ages.It is exquisitely crafted and the illustrations reflect the mood superbly.I read it to my two grandchildren ages 7 and 9 and they asked me to read it again.Than they took it off to their room to read again on their own.Highly Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-Help For Kids
As autumn is quickly turning to winter, a leaf reflects on his life as a vibrant green leaf. To his surprise, he discovers that he has worth in his "later days," too. This is an allegory about living life to its fullest ... and accepting the surprises along the way. This is a fun read, but will be particularly great come fall, when it will be easy to bring the book to life. It is a nice reminder that we are only limited by the perceptions we create for ourselves. The book offers several layers of learning, depending on the child's age: what happens in the fall, how life changes, and self-esteem. It wouldn't take much to draw lessons about aging parents/grandparents from the story, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A moving story about discovery and finding meaning
What could well become a classic children's picturebook for young readers ages 4 to 8, A Simple Brown Leaf is the collaborative effort of author L. J. Davis and illustrator Lisa Victoria. This is the story of an old autumn leaf caught by a squirrel preparing for winter's onslaught. The leaf's journey reveals that its life has more than one purpose. When it was young and green, it was part of the tree; when it turned brown and fell, the squirrel needed it to survive the bitter cold of winter. A moving story about discovery and finding meaning. "You are meant to do something wonderful! Someone loves you! Someone needs you... just like the squirrel needed the simple brown leaf."

5-0 out of 5 stars I Liked the Book
Scardey squirrel by Melanie Watt is funny and cheerful. This book teaches you not to stay home all the time.Scaredy squirrel is terrified of green martians and assorted other things. He never leaves his nut tree, like a tortoise never leaves its shell. On day he mistakenly launches out of his nut tree, playing dead for two hours on the thorn bush.Scardey squirrel, terrified, returns home and now is brave and strong.I would give it 5 stars for small children.By Tuck

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!!!
I laughed my head off when I read my 4 year old this book! She thought it was pretty funny too. I relate soooo much to Scaredy Squirrel as I worry about everything and try to be prepared for everything. The message in this story is fantastic. Because I'm over-the-top like Scaredy, I call the killer bees "Scarey Bees" and playing dead is "Playing Asleep" don't want to scare my 4 year old too much ;)This is a great book for children AND adults. That germaphobe, worrier, non-risk taker in your life can use this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A very cute book
I first saw a review of this book on CNN.com, reviewed by an 8-year-old in fact.He really liked it and the theme hit home for me so I picked it up.The story is very cute and shows kids how taking risks can lead to finding out new and exciting things about themselves. The art is uncluttered and inviting. I think anyone age 5-8 could enjoy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Granny Book
My husband grew up with Miss Suzy being read to him & his siblings by his mom. She reads it with a British accent and funny voices, which makes a delightful book even more so. My kids are just captivated, and will listen to it over and over and over--and now they can quote it!
5-0 out of 5 stars Miss Suzy.....

I picked this book up at a used book store when my grown sons were 4 and 2.They are now 26 and 24, and when I reminded them of Miss Suzy, they began to laugh. It was a bedtime favorite--for me as well as them--and still brings back a smile. It was one of those books that everyone enjoyed--including my husband. There was enough excitement to keep a everyone involved and waiting for the next page to be turned and read.I am glad to see it is still around to be enjoye again by another generation of children. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A two year old's favorite
I am a two and a half year old boy.I go to a parent-toddler class with my mommy, and my teacher read this story to the class. The pictures captured my interest immediately. The storyline is compelling. But the most fun part is the new vocabulary I've learned from it.I adore this book and I read it several times a day at home (I memorized the text after my teacher and my parents read it dozens of times for me).I'll never look at a squirrel the same way again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nuts for Everyone!
This book is great. It tells the story of a boy who has a squirrel come into his room through a hole in a window screen. The story isn't too wordy, and you can get extra info on plants and animals throughout the story in smaller print. The book is funny also, which parents and children should enjoy.Wonderful illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Native American legend of how Bear gave Chipmunk his stripes
There is an entire sub-genre of myth and folklore consisting of stories that explain the distinctive qualities of animals."How Chipmunk Got His Stripes" is a Native American story told along the East Coast, and in the Author's Notes for this volume we learn that while there are Cherokee, Abenaki and Mohawk versions, the earliest written one to be found is of Iroquois origin. What the father and son team of Joseph Bruchac and James Bruchac provide here is a longer and more detailed than what might be found elsewhere, the story having grown in the telling over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grandmother's review
This book has been a hit with each of my seven grandchildren. My youngest, now 3 and not crazy about books, just spent over an hour today getting the squirrel from the front to back of the book over and over.
5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute favorite in our house!
My 2 1/2 year old son absolutely LOVES this book! For the past three months he has wanted to read this book EVERY NIGHT at bed time.He loves moving the squirrel in and out through the slots and is becoming very familiar with the characters and sequence of the plot now that we have read it so much.I can't wait to get some of the other books like this one for him, and for all of my friends who have toddlers, and just know it will become a favorite in their house, too.I'm a school librarian and know this book is developing his joy of reading. While the plot of the book is weak, he certainly overlooks that and can't wait to read it again and again every night. This is a MUST HAVE for anyone with a toddler at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly motivating book for 3 year old w/ speech/motor delay
My son LOVES this book(and also the mouse about the house version). These books are GREAT for fine motor/motor planning...AND great for high affect speech and language therapy. "Oh, oh dear...what happened to his nuts?" "where could they be?" "who do you think hid them?" "what will happen next?" ...Highly recommended book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT FOR READING ALOUD....
With no intended offense to Mr. Lithgow, I've not watched many episodes of "Third Rock from the Sun". I've never seen him on Broadway. Chances are, I'll miss his new show that's slated for TV's fall season. But without a doubt, I am one of his biggest fans, and so are our twins.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures inspired by great paintings
As the daughter of an art teacher who spent lots of her childhood in art museums, I loved this book. My kids like it, too. The rhymes are fun and inspired, the illustrations are beautiful and witty, and the payoff -- Micawber's collection of works, featuring the eponymous squirrel in various classic paintings -- is a riot. This is one of the books I'll keep for the grandkids.

5-0 out of 5 stars My [...] recognizes Monet's work!
We were given "Micawber" as a baby gift. When I first read through it I wasn't sure that it would ever be a favorite, given the high-level vocabulary, so I stuck it on the shelf. When my son was about [...] he pulled it off the bookshelf at bedtime. We've now read it at least once a day for FOUR MONTHS.And my son and I still love it!Thanks to this book, my son loves to point out the various paintings in the illustrations (great illustrations, BTW), he yells "Micawber" every time he sees a squirrel, and he's fascinated with painting of any kind (fingerpainting, paint with water, even playing with my old eyeshadows).I had no idea that a 2 year old could develop an appreciation for fine art and GRE level vocabulary, but it's true.Yes, perhaps not all pre-pre-schoolers will love this book (and neither will all 4-8 year olds or parents), but those who do love it gain so much from it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The story of Earl, the most spoiled squirrel in the world
If there is something familiar about the way "Earl the Squirrel" is drawn, that is simply because he is the creation of Don Freeman, the writer-artist of the classic picture book "Corduroy." So inside you will find the familiar black & white scratchboard art of Freeman, with a touch of red here and there for Earl's scarf and for the eyes of a particularly large and unhappy animal that Earl encounters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reading for all ages
This book is from an incredibly well written series starting with the original "Redwall" book. The "formula" is good against evil, loyalty and honor with only the glory of a job well done and the genuine gratitude that goes to those who stand up for what good and right no matter what the bad guys promise. Another tale in a not to be missed series of books for all-age readers

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Redwalls's best!
I loved this book from start to finish, it had a twist having a hero that didn't come from redwall,(Most of them do). It had me on the edge of my seat during the final battle between Tam and Gulo, the characters were great; as always, and it was just, in general a good book. My favorite creatures are squirrels so i loved it,i cant wait to read the next redwall book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Merely average for a Redwall book, but still an enjoyable read with great characters. Recommended.
One of the more recent books in the long Redwall series (book 17), Rakkety Tam is the story of a highland warrior squirrel from the North and a flesh-eating wolverine from the icy lands across the sea. Rakkety Tam McBurl is a fierce fighter, garbed in a kilt and carrying a claymore. He goes after Gulo the Savage when he and his army of 100 vermin attack and slaughter a group of squirrels. Along the way, Tam joins forces with the Long Patrol and is given the Sword of Martin. Battles are waged throughout Mossflower, culminating in a one on one battle between Rakkety Tam and Gulo outside the gates of Redwall. Rakkety Tam is merely average as far as the Redwall series goes, but still a good read: the characters are enjoyable, the storytelling fast-paced and gripping, but the plot largely unmemorable. I recommend it if you like and read the Redwall books, but if the series is new to you I suggest you pick up some of the classics (Redwall, Mossflower, Salamandastron) instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher recomends the "Animal Ark" series
I am thrilled to finally find a book that both boys and girls enjoy equally well. The "Animal Ark" books have the "aaw" factor of cuddly animals that the girls love and the suspense factor to hold the fleeting attention of the boys. These books NEVER sit on the shelf! Although the target audience and reading level are younger students, the 12-14 set like them just as much. A lovely respite from Harry Potter, too.

This is an excellent choice. Paul McCartney is one of the best. The illustrations and writing was just awesome. His animation collection video for kids was especially good and should go along with the book. It's one of the best kids books that I've come across.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encouraged "reading" in our toddler
It's a five-star book for us because its simplicity allowed our two-year-old daughter to turn the pages and tell the story word-for-word even though she wasn't yet able to read the text.We observed her reading it on her own, out loud, at a really young age.The illustrations are really appealing and the book didn't get old after repeated bedtime readings. We picked up the other Kitamura books after finding this one, and felt the same way about the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book!
We bought this book for our daughter 2 months ago and she never gets tired of hearing it!She is now 11 months and shakes her head "no" in response to each question. ("Here? No, that's fox's hole!")This is a perfect book for small children- short story & great illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big hit with 10 month old AND his Papi
I could recite every word of this book to you. My 10 month old son loves it more than any other book. I'm not sure what it is, but it may be the repetition of the word "No" e.g., "No! Bird's nest is full" and "No! That's foxes hole!" I love the pictures of the squirrel who looks really dense. It's fun to read, and since it takes about 60 seconds to do the book I don't mind doing it 3-4 times a day. Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Oaken Throne
After being seriously disappointed by The Alchemist's Cat, the first book in the Deptford Histories, I was hesitant to pick up The Oaken Throne, the longest of all the Deptford books. But I wasn't disappointed this time, and The Oaken Throne brings back a lot of the charm that many readers enjoyed in previous Deptford books.

My 10 month old loves this book, and so do I.The illustrations are beautiful, and the simple text is perfect for very young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely, gentle bedtime poem
This is the perfect book for lulling your small children off to sleep -- particularly in the summertime! It's a gentle and sweet story that's also a counting book, so the kid on your lap can count up to ten and then back down with the story. Warm, funny pictures, too. Excellent! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mom of two
My Kindergartener loves this series, and I love all the little messages and opportunities for discussions that the book affords. The story is all about animals and life in Central Park from their perspective. The tidbits we learned about Guinea Pigs are right on (we own one) and the opportunity for perspective taking is very good for kids this age (developmental psych is my area of expertise professionally). Enjoyable read for the whole family. ... Read more
